What would I do different if I had to start my blog over? – Jeremy Schoemaker

Posted By Darren Rowse 21st of July 2006 Miscellaneous Blog Tips 8

200606222142-1The following is an answer from Jeremy Schoemaker from ShoeMoney and Webmaster Radio’s Net Income Show responding to my one question interview question of what he’d do differently if he had to start his blog over again.

First off – Great question! If I could go back to last summer when I started blogging I would have redone my url structure. Right now its / %year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/ but I would have liked to just have done /%postname%/ I could always change it now but the redirecting urls and all that is such a pain in the butt. There are really so many things that come to mine that I would like to do different but then maybe my blog would not be what it is if it was different? Maybe my bad grammar and bad web design makes it what it is ?

  1. I don’t see why a simple permalink structure would be better. Do search engines favour shallow sites?

While Shoe is brilliant at making money, and has quite a following, I would not take his comments as free license to slack on spellchecking! Jeremy’s blog is popular because many people already knew him and wanted his insights.

While that’s great, remember that your mileage will vary, unless you already have a great rep and something people are clamoring to learn.

  3. I just blogged about why I actually PREFER having the date in the structure:

  4. I wish I’d done that too with the permalinks, but I (who knows why) have it as archive/postid which is even worse. Ah well.

  5. I’ve had this disucssion many time before, and I still prefer having the date structure in there, my understanding is that is isn’t negative in terms of SERP’s, + it’s required if you want WP to catalog by date. Also it helps incase you even duplicate your heading for two different posts….it can happen!

  6. Jeremy doesn’t even care about his blog; lol. There’s a great semi-in-depth interview with him at SEO Buzz Box, just go there and do a search on Shoemoney. I’d give the link to it, but getting filtered out as spam makes for sad pandas.

  8. Can’t belive one of the monsters of forums unSEOed his blogs url :)
