Take the 7 Link Challenge Today #7links

Posted By Darren Rowse 16th of July 2010 Writing Content 0 Comments

Today I thought it might be fun to do a bit of a fun challenge together that draws on a number of things that I’ve previously taught here on ProBlogger (see below for what these teachings are).

The idea is to publish a post that is a list of 7 links to posts that you and others have written that respond to the following 7 categories. Your links should be to:

  • Your first post
  • A post you enjoyed writing the most
  • A post which had a great discussion
  • A post on someone else’s blog that you wish you’d written
  • Your most helpful post
  • A post with a title that you are proud of
  • A post that you wish more people had read

You might like to add a few explanations to different links – for example to talk a little about why you enjoyed writing a post or what you like about the post on another blog that you link to or why you regret the post you regret.

The main aim of doing this challenge is to create a list post that highlights some of the posts in your archives to new readers (a sneeze page), that links out to another blog and that hopefully is a little fun (and not too much work) to do.

If you tag your posts or are going to tweet a link to it – use #7links as a tag to help the meme continue.

I’ll post my own 7 links tomorrow here on ProBlogger – stay tuned!

PS: once you’ve written your 7 link challenge post – link to it in comments below so we can take a look!

  1. Darren I am so happy to have discovered your brilliant blog and loved taking the 7Links challenge.
    Here’s my list:

    Hope you enjoy.

  2. Thanks, Darren. This was really fun. It actually took me quite a lot of time to go through my posts and pick the best one for each link. It’s really great to post something different once in a while.

    Here’s the post itself:

  4. @ Dawn…Did you figure out how to do your 7 link post?

If not try clicking on any one of the links people have given for an example; if you’re still having difficulty figuring it out, feel free to send me an email.

  5. Great idea! It really got me thinking, especially about other blog posts which I admire.

  6. Here’s my entry. This was harder than I thought it would be, and I’m not used to submitting posts without images or photos so it looks so plain to me!

  7. I’m doing this for my personal blog, but it’s probably an exercise I will do for all my blogs. Great content idea!

I can’t wait to check out what other bloggers did with this.

  10. What a great idea, Darren! I’m playing along, with this post: 7 Links for Sweepstakes Fans http://contests.about.com/b/2010/07/19/7-links-for-sweepstakes-fans-7links.htm

  11. I’m a little late to the party, but here we go.

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at my first post, but I guess I’ve come a long way!

  12. Darren, I enjoyed writing this post and found it great way to look at and analyze my content.

However, I do find it odd that most people called their post some variation of the “7 Link Challenge.” I tried to align my title for my site and content.

  13. I wasn’t going to do this initially based on the subject matter of the blog (Managing Bipolar Relationships), but after giving it some thought and actually going through with the exercise, I’m glad I did it.

  14. Thanks much for the suggestion, Darren.

In creating this post, I had to face up to how much work I still need to do to drive more traffic to my blog. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course.

  15. Darren Rowse, you were certainly a genius blogger before this post hit the blogosphere on July 16th, 2010. Having inspired many others to do it, I thought I’d follow suit.

But, before I did, I said to my self, “you show me yours, then I’ll show you mine.” And, he did on the 17th. So, here are mine.

  16. Just posted my seven-link-challenge entry at the URL I entered above. It was actually kind of difficult for some of the questions, as I do have quite a few readers and a good Alexa ranking, but most of them show their love with tweets @girlpluscamera and not with comments. Quite possibly I’m doing something wrong.

  17. This is the first time I have participated in a blogging assignment. It was challenging to decide which 7 posts to use. I have only been blogging for 7 months. I started the blog to help promote my business. But now I enjoy writing the posts and would like to have more interaction with my readers

Thanks for this opportunity to improve my blogging. Here is my post: http://mypersonalvalet.wordpress.com/2010/07/19/7-things-you-s…personal-valet/

Let me know what you think.

  18. This was a great exercise. Thanks for initiating it. My #7links post is at:

  19. I found this really helpful. Here’s mine (it’s a book blog, just fyi): http://thereadingape.blogspot.com/2010/07/little-stock-taking.html

  20. Wow, this is actually a pretty simple exercise. It brings about a couple of things:

    – internal linking
    – more personal thoughts on your blog
    – what readers might be missing

Will get on it and post my links soon. Thanks for the idea!

  24. I’ve been searching via the internet looking to get ideas on the way to get my personal blog site coded, your current design and style together with style are great. Did you actually code it your self or did you get a programmer to get it done for you personally?

  25. Today we posted our 7 link challenge. Thanks for this opportunity – it was actually a great exercise for us to see what our blog has to offer from a different perspective. We’re so glad to have discovered your blog and look forward to how we can learn to grow our own blog. Blessings!

  26. That’s a great idea for a post. Here’s my 7 Links:

  28. Darren, thanks for creating this exercise—not only did it give us opportunities to share our stuff, but it also made us think about which stuff might be best for sharing. And it was a nice break from a “typical” post for me! Here’s how I answered the challenge: http://lifelinespublishing.net/2010/07/21/the-problogger-7-link-challenge/

  34. It took me a while to write the blog post, but finally it came.
I’ve to say that I broke the “one category, one post” a few times but at the end it turned out to be a nice exercise which also showed me some interesting facts about my blog.

    Here it is:

  40. I did the challenge for my Blogiversary (today) so it’s finally posted. What a great way to wrap up the past year.

  41. Hey Darren!!

It’ a great idea, but I suggest two variations on it:

    * I do it a top level page, in order to new visitors could have a general idea of the blog, and get convinced to subscribe on RSS or e-mail to it.
    * I do it as a “report of the month”, centering not in all the blog, but in the last month history. So, it keep changing and also as an index for previous month writing.
    * As I’m changing from a two languages blog to a multilingual one, I need time to verify my numbers and to get more comments, so I announced it to august 1st.

Of course, it’s a little different on my case, because I do the blog bilingual (English and spanish), so some titles that are great word-games are lost on translation; or some post will be most commented in one language than another. My “7links” will had different results than “7ligas” option.

Thanks again and I hope you and the readers visit my blog to see how I adopted the idea!!

    Saludos,

    Gonzalo.
