Speedlinking – 11 March 2007

Posted By Darren Rowse 11th of March 2007 Miscellaneous Blog Tips 14

Three links for you today.

  • Alex writes Technorati 100: What’s Hot in the Blogosphere – a detailed analysis of what type of blogs are dominating Technorati’s top 100.
  • natnit shares 5 steps to spice up your free blog
  • Shoemoney posts an email from someone trying to extort money from him as an AdSense publisher by threatening to close down his AdSense account. I got the same email asking me for $250 a month (woohooo – I beat Shoemoney by $50 a month). I guess I need to watch out for ‘special robots’….

  1. Mock my special robots at your will, brief mortal. Bwahahahahah!!!

  2. TECHNORATI’s basic method of ranking, is based on authority and not content (always). Meaning, its based on the number of blogs that link (subscribe) to your website, no matter if the same is utter crap (e.g.: exaggerated celebrity gossip) or does have authentic, genuine content (good readership).

  3. The daft thing is if you read the forums there are loads of people who claim to have had their adsense accounts ruined by other people over clicking their ads. Just shows how fragile adsense profits are.

  4. […] A reader asked me about my monetization plan for chrisg.com and was surprised that I didn’t feature Adsense. My answer? Adsense is too fragile for me. Then I read Darrens Speedlinking post Shoemoney posts an email from someone trying to extort money from him as an AdSense publisher by threatening to close down his AdSense account. I got the same email asking me for $250 a month (woohooo – I beat Shoemoney by $50 a month). I guess I need to watch out for ’special robots’…. […]

  5. Special robots! LOL Sorry, I know it’s a serious subject, but the email reads as though it was written by someone with a Dr. Evil complex – I wonder if he has a Mini-Me.

  6. Congratulations on getting the higher extortion bid..

  7. Here’s the thing: the letter is literate. The person who sent it knows the difference between your and you’re. Real extortion letters are not so well written. My sense is that this letter is a viral ad for a new blog. And/or this letter is an effort to thwart actual extortion.

  8. When I get big traffic spikes, Google never pays me for the extra clicks I get that day anyway! I guess I could only be happy to have the problem of worrying about my AdSense account being taken away from me! :)

  9. This is so bizarre it must be true. Surely he must realize that Google will just negate his special robot activity.

I’m sorry I just can’t get the Dr Evil images out of my head now.

I got you beat, he sent a second email asking for $10,000 a month.

  11. Congratulations are also in order for Markus!! That’s excellent news for you..

Unfortunately, I only get the usual lame, wrong-grammar, wrong sentence structure, wrong spelling, wrong everything… kinda scam letter…

  12. […] Shoemoney and Darren both got threatened to have their Adsense accounts robbed by super awesome money-stealing robots if they didn’t pay a monthly stipend. I personally think this is a viral marketing campaign for the new Transformers movie. […]

  13. Allan,

For every geek like you and me, there are hundreds that love what looks like crap to you.

  14. […] Sometimes, an innocuous little e-mail can make all the difference in the world. Although I don’t have the e-mail saved, I told Darren about 5 Steps to Spice Up Your Free Blog, and he decided to include it in his Speedlinking post. Taking the time to write the e-mail made the difference of a few thousand page views. […]
