Sitemeter Crashing Sites When Viewed with IE7

Posted By Darren Rowse 2nd of August 2008 Blogging Tools and Services 0 Comments

Twitter is aflutter with blog owners wondering why their sites can’t be viewed at the moment and it seems that the commonality between them all is that they are running Sitemeter stats on their blogs and that they only seem to crash when viewed with IE7.

I’ve put an email into Sitemeter to get clarification on the problem but until it’s fixed the only way to have your blog viewed by IE7 seems to be removing Sitemeter’s code from your blog (as I’ve done here). It means your stats will be disrupted and inaccurate for today – but at least you’ll have everyone able to view your blog.

Will update when I hear more.

Update – Sitemeter have posted about the problem and say that they have resolved it on their blog. Read here for details.

  1. Hi,

since I live in Istanbul and posts here are generally released when I’m asleep, I of course am not only one of the last ones to write a comment, but in this case didn’t noticed the glitch at Sitemeter.

But everything is working fine at the moment, just like you said in your update. I just hope that people are smart enough to try using a URL in Firefox if it doesn’t work with IE.

    Cheers,
    Max

  2. I reinstalled the Sitemeter code on my site this morning in the U.S. (8:00 am CST) and tested it on Internet Explorer 7.0. It still crashes my site. I am considering moving Sitemeter permanently. Perhaps I will then break my BAD habit of viewing my statistics every 30 minutes.

  3. I find it interesting that people are thanking Sitemeter for fixing the problem. A problem they never should have let happen in the first place. And then they say NOTHING about it until it’s finally resolved?

    Shame on Sitemeter.

I won’t be re-installing their code. Looking at GetClicky.com right now. Seems to offer all Sitemeter did, and more.

  4. Strange, I am using Sitemeter for quite some time now, but never noticed anything unusual. Of course, I prefer Firefox, but I do check the site in IE 7 and Opera every now and then to see if everything checks out.

I know people flame Internet Explorer, but in my stats IE returns a 84% useage amongst my readers, so I would not rule out IE.

(some people are still using IE5 would you believe!)

I hope this isn’t too far off topic.

I’m experiencing crashes when attempting to view Ustream and Mogulus vids in both IE7 and Firefox 2 and 3.

Viewing in Vista on the same machine is fine.

    Regards.

    Teddy
