My Advertising and Affiliate Earnings Graph – August 29 to December 19

Posted By Darren Rowse 21st of December 2005 Pro Blogging News 0 Comments

A number of people have asked me recently how earnings have been for me in the lead up to Christmas. I’m not going to get into figures (I’ve done that enough this year) but I thought I’d show a graph to give an idea of how the past three or four months have gone.

The graph below (click to enlarge in a new window) shows my advertising and affiliate earnings by category from 29 August (the day I started using Chitika – reviewed here). I’ve made the categories AdSense, Chitika, Chitika Referrals, Amazon, Miscellaneous and Clickbank. I have not included other sources of income like Six Figure Blogging, consulting and b5media.

Here is the graph. I’ll make a few comments below it.

Earnings-Aug-Dec-1

Comments, Explanations and Observations

  • The Miscellaneous category includes BlogAds, Adbrite ads, a few text ads and sponsorships (I had one with Adobe and another with Ricoh over the past couple of months).
  • The Miscellaneous and Amazon numbers are averages spread across each month (ie in December you’ll notice all Amazon earnings are the same).
  • The Chitika figures are Unaudited numbers. My audits have been in the vicinity of 10% each month so far so you can visualize some decreases.
  • You’ll notice a decrease in Chitika earnings and Chitika Referal earnings in the past month. This coincides pretty closely with the 1st of December change in the way they filter ads. I’m expecting a lower audit this month as a result.
  • The peak days were just after thanksgiving from memory – days where online sales are traditionally strong.
  • Amazon sales have been particularly good in December – over triple normal figures.
  • You’ll notice a dip in AdSense earnings in the middle of the period. There is probably a number of reasons for this. It’s partly due to the introduction of Chitika (ie CTR went down as a result of there being competing ads). Also I noticed the Cost per Click went down a little with Adsense for me in the lull before Chrismas. It has returned in the past few weeks.
  • Traffic levels have increased in the past few weeks. This will account for some of the increases over the past few months. I’m expecting that this graph will have a downturn in the weeks after Christmas as traffic slows.
  • Traffic is not the only reason for the increases in Chitika. The first few weeks earnings were steady as I didn’t optimize them well and did not have them on all of my blogs. In September and October I expanded my use of them and got smarter with my optimization. You can see that they work well on the topics I cover – particularly my consumer electronic blogs.

It has obviously been an exceptional few months with over 100% growth (at it’s peak it was over triple). As I say – I’m expecting to see a downward slope in the coming weeks but am hopeful that it will maintain a healthy level once the holiday periods are over.

  1. My earnings’ graph would look a lot like yours, except that the numbers going down the left-hand axis probably wouldn’t have quite so many decimals :)

If I may ask, what software do you use to make the graphs you post on this site? I’ve been consistently impressed by them.

  2. I tried Chitika and only earned pennies. :(

Looks like most of the increase of your income came thanks to the launch of Chitika.

I’ve made some calculations and it looks like you’re close to 35k/month (or more), if my calculations are correct ;-) Nice!

  4. graphs are always constructed in Keynote – the Mac Presentation software. They do nice work don’t they!

  5. Hi Darren,

I’m not sure whether this is the best place for me to inform it you.

Still remember your Olympic site (http://www.livingroom.org.au/olympics/)?
Anyway I just visited this site for some info regarding sports, but there is something wrong with it. All the content was “screwed up”.
Maybe the code was missing somewhere.

ombak: Just guessing, but I’d bet he doesn’t really care. It’s still getting 700 hits a day and probably some ad money, I don’t think the point of leaving it up was for people to really read

  7. One of the thing that ticks me off about Chitika eMiniMalls is that the text display simply does not work (i.e. looks like sh*t), at least in Firefox. Sometimes I can only see half the text. So until they straighten this up, and since half my traffic comes from Firefox users anyway…

    Darren,

I like your graph, but it will help us a great deal if we can get an idea how your revenue has grown over the time period stated above. Plus, it really does give us a great deal of hope and encouragement to see that certain income levels are attainable for probloggers. If Thomas’ $35k estimate is right, then I must say that you have done tremendously well for yourself. Keep up the good work.

  9. I think Thomas has under estimated it. Putting together the data in the link in the first paragraph of this post with the graph I’d estimate it’s closer to $40,000 per month.

Add to that six figure blogging and B5 Media and it could be as much as $50,000 per month.

Someone told me he has a book deal coming also and has more courses on the way so it looks like Darren might be someone to chat with about a loan.

  10. The graph that would interest me would be, not income by advertising platform (adsense, chitika etc…) but by blog type. I think people always think you earn gazillions from problogger.net and forget you run many other consumer focused blogs. I’d say that problogger is your revenue source #1 for Chitika thanks to referrals, but it must be abysmally performing with adsense compared to your other sites.

  11. […] Everyone seems to be revealing there 4th quarter earnings, so we decided it was alright to release ours too. […]

  13. I tend to agree with Ozh that different types of blog have different earnings, with consumer-based being best and webmaster related the lowest. I say this from experience because out of almost 20 websites, http://www.larrylim.net has the lowest earnings.

It could be that because webmasters understand the mechanics of pay-per-click, they “subconciously” avoid clicking on the ads.

Nick: Chitika was doing fine until they started “filtering” and “auditing” clicks. Many webmasters have been pissed off but I personally like the fact that I could specify keywords. It makes building sites like http://www.techgiftguide.com possible.

  14. Darren,
I for one would love to know how you extracted your affiliate sales data from Amazon Associates, etc. and brought it into Keynote. I’m not a Mac owner, but the extraction part would be very interesting!
