Jason Calacanis Gives Advice

Posted By Darren Rowse 14th of February 2006 Miscellaneous Blog Tips 7

John Evans over at Syntagma has just posted a short Interview with Jason Calacanis of Weblogs Inc (well done John – Jason is a hard man to tie down for an interview of any length – I gave up a year ago :-) ).

John asked Jason ‘what’s the single most effective monetization step for a blog network?’ Jason answers:

‘Create world-class content every day for a year. Folks get one to three months into blogging and they’re like “I don’t have an audience.” Uhhh…. well, it’s only been three months.

If you’re going to make it in blogging today you have really be willing to invest a decent amount of time (or money).’

  1. Hi,

I completely agree. Creating a world class blog with substantial traffic takes time and/or money. I’ve create my blog ( about 9 months ago. If I look at the first 3 months, although I did get traffic, the real explosion started shortly after that. As you can see from this graph, blog traffic really is viral and grows exponential as Darren’s talked about before. So if it’s not working out the first few months, hang in there. Just like anything worth getting, it takes time and patience.

  2. He’s right. It takes a long, long time. That is, unless you really, really know your stuff, can write several totally amazing articles and get them heavily Digged and del.icio.used (or even Slashdotted). It’s a bit of a different strategy to most blogs, but it’s one I’m seeing ever increasingly.

The problem is, pulling this strategy is hard unless you have years of experience in blogging and driving and monetizing traffic.. so perhaps it takes a long time after all ;-)

  6. I believe the niche now is audio or video. Blog aggregating platforms also have a massive advantage in terms of community and collaboration. Third, interviews and guest posting drives relationships, variety, niche, and can capture authority and legitimacy. However, so many interviews I see these days in social media are soooo repetitive.

I see Calicanis pursuing the both video and interviews with Mahalo daily.

  7. May be Jason is very much correct. Writing a world class content is really an art. But only writing content will not make money if we do not know other tricks that no one will tell you free.. we need some great posts fro Jason.
