Introducing 12 Year Old ProBlogger – David Wilkinson

Posted By Darren Rowse 4th of January 2007 Case Studies 97

I love hearing stories of of young entrepreneurs and so today when I came across 12 year old ProBlogger David Wilkinson whose Web 2.0 blog is Techzi I was over the moon.

Here’s a young guy who has recruited a couple of friends (one is 12, the other is 11) to help him write his blog and who in a recent interview at Repliqa answered the question of ‘Are you making any money blogging?‘ with:

“Yes, quite a bit actually. I could definitely live off $500 a month until I turn 14, by which time I aim to be earning more, by experimenting in Internet Marketing.”

David and his co-bloggers are currently running a fundraiser to raise enough money to transfer his blog from Blogspot to a hosted WordPress blog and he’s already over the $1200 mark (make a donation below).

David was recently featured on the BBC and sounds like he’s becoming quite the local celebrity.

What I love about his blog is his style of writing. He’s actually a great writer (you’d never know he was 12 most of the time) and that he writes with an authentic voice, humor and having done some good research. While he’s only been blogging for 6 months he does at a standard that is as good (if not better) than a lot of more experienced bloggers twice (or thrice) his age.

I’m looking forward to watching David’s blogging in 2007.

  1. After the domain Techzi.com was snapped up by someone else hours after this post at ProBlogger went live, I needed to find a new domain.

I was really hoping to go for a .com domain, but if .net is good enough for ProBlogger, then it certainly is for me.

Techzi.net – Coming soon! (We’ve already paid for it and everything! Now just waiting for hosting details to arrive.)

  2. Hey David,
Don’t let them get you down. On hosting, I heard great things about Blue Host and I have been with them for about 6 months now and haven’t been disappointed. They Recently went to 200gig of space and 2000Gb of transfers a month as limits. You can find them
    here.
    (Aff).
Hope this helps and best of luck for the future!
    Molly

  3. Molly.

I think I’ve decided on hosting now.Though I’m pretty excited already. I’ve got my very own domain name! I’m sure most of you guys have had a 101 before, but this is my first time.

Of course, turns out you need a credit card to purchase a domain through Google. Hope my Dad doesn’t mind… ;)

  5. Wow, talk about SLEAZY! Someone grabbed Techzi.com on this kid? They’ve done it as a private registrant so we can’t see who it is. Now, THAT’S a really sad person…

  6. They’ll probably just park the thing… not cool, either way.

David–hosting options would vary depending on what your needs were. I didn’t see them anywhere in the comments, so it’s hard to suggest anything. Media Temple has some really good offerings, but if you don’t need that level of quality, there might be lower cost options that would suit you better. Then again, with all the attention you’re getting maybe it pays to plan for the future…

  7. I’m start blogging at 21..He start at 12.it’s backward…I wish i start at 12 too but that time internet just start..I’m start blogging with blogspot at first, only on 2006 with WP blog.I just paid about $15 per year for domain and hosting. It’s per year not per month..

  8. I think it is awesome!

My only question is concerning that rule with Adsense that you must be over 18 to have Google Ads. Is that correct?

  9. The kid got sleazed on wanting to use the .com address for his blog, but instead fought back with a .net domain! David, good luck on your blog as you continue to grow!

  10. Thanks everybody!

The really odd thing is, where does the domain Techzi.com redirect to?

My very own Techzi.net! I’m not sure if they plan to pretend they are my blog and stick AdSense at the top or something… O_O

And no, you don’t need to be 18 to have AdSense. Not if you’re not the one who signs up at any rate. ;)

The new website on WP will be ad-free. I think I prefer the domain ‘Techzi.net’ too! Thanks you guys, you rock!

  11. […] Introducing 12 Year Old ProBlogger 12 year old boy becomes a problogger that is what has been said on problogger, which is really good for a 12 year old, but when i read his website techzi they way the writing, which made it seemed like it was a lot older then 12 but i guees yous will have to figure it out for yourself. […]

  12. […] What I love about his blog is his style of writing. He’s actually a great writer (you’d never know he was 12 most of the time) and that he writes with an authentic voice, humor and having done some good research”. For all I know, his dad could be running the site in his name”. […]

  13. I think adsense wants the payee to be 18 but I suppose any SSN would work. I don’t know, I didn’t put myself down for it, though I did for amazon affiliates.

  14. Sam,

AdSense is being ditched on the new site anyway. We’re taking up Amazon and Text-Link-Ads instead. It will be interesting to see how profits compare.

  15. […] This story was first found in problogger.net where it’s mentioned that an interview of this new problogger had taken place at Repliqua (see the interview here). I just finished flipping through his blog, well he’s a good writer and he did some homework on the things he wrote. […]

  16. […] That’s the beauty of the internet and tools for publishing i guess, when i was 12 i was still coming to terms with hair that i spotted in perculiar places, but not this boy because he is already making a healthy $500 a month from his tech blog – Techzi which is powered by Blogspot. […]

  17. TLA is nice… I want to be in the program but they keep rejecting me because they don’t like my inbound, apparently. Now that they have their blog-thing I’m hoping maybe they’ll take better note (my T-rati isn’t bad) but it’s obnoxious because, for reasons I fail to understand and which TLA hasn’t been able to enunciate, other sites started after mine with less traffic were admitted but mine was not. Not fun!

I do worry about those rumors that the naked referral links to the advertising sites could impact rankings negatively, though?

  18. George says: 01/07/2007 at 6:08 am

This child is awesome. Even with a income of $500 from various freelancing he is requesting $5,000 in donation to create his new wordpress powered blog site. What a genius, use other people’s money to build something. Compare to him I am a fool for not thinking of this, how can I use my own money to finance my blogs, when I could have ask for donation.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but this kid is going to be big in the future. I can see it now, he is going to take financing for his blogging empire and than eventually sell it to some media company.

In all sarcasm aside, very nice word David Wilkinson, I will be following your site and maybe ChipIn something with my upcoming Adsense check.

  19. when i was 12, i was playing with dolls!
    no wait, not dolls

  20. […] 7th, 2007 · No Comments Via ProBlogger, I read the news that a chap, David Wilkinson is a blogger @ ProBlogger and he isonly 12 years old. I can only shake my head in wonderment. At 12 years old, the only thing I know about computers are Windows 3.1, Double Dragon and Alleycats. Forget about the Internet or the World Wide Web — I have no idea how either works at the time and in 1992, both are virtually non-existent in the country. Perhaps I would have gone down that path much, much earlier were I a 12 year old kid today, but of course we are never told what would happen. […]

  22. […] Friday, January 5th, 2007 in Technology, Life, Work, Web, Blog, Career Darren introduced a young ProBlogger (I must find out the meaning of ProBlogger and blogger) who mainly blogs about gadgets and other technological stuff in coherent IT-speak. He is only 12 and the sentences are coherent. You understand him straight away. Bravo, I say. […]

  23. […] Inte nu längre. […]

  25. […] I was just reading a post on ProBlogger, about a blogger who’s only 12, and gets $500/mth from his blog. Oh god am I envious. […]

  27. David is an incredibly smart 12-year old. I have spoken to him several times and he is wise beyond his years. I can see him becoming the next Mark Zuckerberg.

  29. […] And I owe it all to just a few people… Darren Rowse particularly! Cheers mate! It just goes to show what can happen when one big blog mentions you. A hundred and one others pick up on it, with more picking up on that. I’m pretty sure that if I was on my own servers when this ProBlogger Effect had kicked in, they would have crashed. Heck, let’s hope they hold up once they go live. For those of you who said I wouldn’t need to buy a server, if I get traffic anything close to what I got yesterday and today (TONNES!), then trust me. I will! […]

  30. Thanks for the kind words Nate! Also, Techzi.net has sorta gone live now. You can check it out. Just need to implement the template now!

  31. […] Good grief… This guy’s smart. He’s brought so much into blogging aswell. From the ‘AdSense Pinging’ that he started with Darren Rowse of ProBlogger.net, (You know that guy who brought me fame and fortune?) to his spiffy bribary competitions. What’s that you say? Well every couple of weeks, John sticks up a challenge, or a competition on his webpage, asking you guys, his loyal readers (as of now, here ye, here ye), to help out his blog in the rankings. Whether it’s adding JohnChow.com to your MyBlogLog community list or to your Technorati Favorites, John possesses an uncanny marketing ability, and is using it to squeeze the living daylights out of the blogosphere. 44. It’s amazing how young kids can do these days compare to the old times.

  45. I am really admired of your talent in this young age.

  46. Hmmm. Daivd’s site appears to be no longer in existence. I found it’s cached site, but otherwise, he’s either experiencing technical difficulties or he’s now turned his interest to girl and/or sports.
