I’m a Six Figure Blogger

Posted By Darren Rowse 1st of September 2005 ProBlogger Site News 0 Comments

It just hit me – like a truck – that I’ve just become six figure blogger.

When Andy and I selected that name for our course on entrepreneurial blogging – earning over $100k from blogging in a 12 month period was more of a catchy name and a dream than an achievable thing – but sometime in the last month or so it actually became a reality.

August is over and my monthly Adsense figures were a new record – the daily average was $511.27 with the monthly total coming in at just a stones throw from $16,000 (USD). The following picture is a screen capture (with my personal details blocked out) of the monthly total. It actually ended up being 0.36 cents higher than the total you see there (it all counts I guess).

Earnings-August

As you’d expect, I’m pretty happy with that total – but what made me even happier (and made my heart skip a beat) was to look at the total for the past 12 month period and realize that this month’s total took me over the magical $100,000 since 1 September last year. In fact it took me over that mark considerably.

I wasn’t planning on an announcement of earnings this month – but I guess in the lead up to a course on six figure blogging it might be a good thing to actually let people know that it’s possible for a one person show to hit that kind of mark with enough time, luck and honest hard work.

  1. Congratulations Darren on your successes! And thanks for taking the time to teach us all so much!

  2. Congrats, gives me something to aim for. What I think is cool about you Darren, is that you have made it and still retain integrity and of course that you have chosen to share so much.

    Well done!

  3. Congratulations and thanks to give us all this great stuff.
    regards from France

  4. I am so excited! I cannot wait for our preview call! Whee!

  5. wow good job. i am continuously amazed by the figures people (independent people that is) are posting via adsense.I think $50 a day (a piece) is my goal from my three blogs.

  6. Well done mate. I am aiming for a six figure annual income including the two digits after the decimal point!

  7. Congratulations, Darren! You’ve clearly worked for it, you deserve it, and I hope you keep it up. :)

  8. Congratulations. That’s a fantastic achievement you should be proud of.

  9. I did some maths to prove that blogging is a legitimate business to be in.

    1. Take US$100,000 = GBP £54,688 (at current exchange rate)
    2. This is £149.83 earning every single day of the year.
    3. Broken down into a ‘normal’ working week (5 days p/w, 48 weeks per year), Darren would either have to earn about £32 an hour, for a 35-hour week, or else work an 18 hour day for about £12.65 an hour.

£12.65 per hour is a low-end professional wage in Britain. Even £32 per hour is not an extortionate wage for the sort of work that is involved in pro-blogging.

So anyone who sneers at pro-blogging as some sort of walk in the park, or get-rich-quick scheme, ought to check out the raw figures, when broken down. Damn hard work for fair remuneration.

Of course, the earnings could yet go far higher, and deservedly so.

The maths may not be great, but you get the idea.

    Great news Darren!

Have you already set a new goal? Like $1,000,000? ;-)

  11. wow! that’s an unbelievable figure! congratulations, man!

  12. That is amazing. Congratulations on this accomplishment; I never made six figures even when I had a full-time job. And I suspect, that even if I revert from freelancer to full-time jobber again, I still won’t make that kind of dinero. So, the Urban Kvetch wishes you a mazal tov (as my people say).

I’m fairly new to your site; any shortcuts to particularly relevant posts that might help me figure out where to start with GoogleSense, BlogAds, etc?

  13. Wow, those are fantastic figures Darren, well done! And thanks for the continued advice as to how we all may aim for such success.

  14. Darren — I am just thrilled for you! You’re living proof that what you give comes back to you. Thanks much!

  15. Amazing feat Darren, congragulations. You are an inspiration to all of us.

  16. Braggart! LOL. I am quite pleased with my $3.72 cents last month, thank you very much! Seriously though, good work! You seem a decent fellow and I hope that you’ll continue to be so and to be successful.

  17. Hell I would like to make a 1.00 a day

  18. Wow, congrats Darren … again!

  19. You’re awesome! I agree with Andy Merrett and was just telling another friend who’s interested in starting a professional blog – problogging is much more work than it seems on the surface. I doubt there are many people who work as hard as you do, Darren. Way to go.

  20. Congratulations!!!

  21. Even 37 cents a day is hard to maintain! That’s a great figure Darren.. and I am sure it has something to do with all of your living room blogs including the original living room, the digital camera, the chopper airplanes… and SEO.. Gee..You got a lot of expertise and interests… You defintely deserve the 6 figure income! Eager to take your course!!!

  22. Congratulations Darren! This really is an achievement. You are an inspiration and I hope things just get better and better. Well done – you deserve it!!!

  23. ~ Oh sure .. $100,000 this year, maybe $200,000 next year .. but .. the real question is … Are you happy?

Just kidding! Another Congrats from Canada, eh? way-to-go.

And it’s a trickle down theory .. your good success is rubbing off on all of us, by learning from all your great posts in this blog and by all others. In fact, I’m up from $0.03 per day to about $0.28 per day now… and my August 2005 was the highest ever in HART’s history … $5.96! July was only $1.88 and that was AT LEAST an increase by 300% (am I violating any TOS by saying that outloud?)

    I have to reread /31-days/ now. G’day.

  24. Congrats.

  25. Re: Andy #9
well based on US averages of 2000 working hours we do per year (40 a week 50 weeks a year) Darren is doing quite well (remember this assumption is based on US figures). figure 166 hours per month worked (2000/12), then divide his monthly rake of $15,850 by 166, and you get $95.50 per hour roughly as his wage.
that would put him at close to $190,000 USD per year. The average or median US income is something like $35,000 per year. so he’d be making well over 5x the average income. not a bad line of work if you ask me ;-)

  26. Great work Darren! I’ve been following your site daily for the past couple of months. Some of your tips and techniques have taken my Adsense totals up by over 300% in the last two months. I was making a decent profit before, but with these increases life has become so much easier and fun. Thanks!

  27. Wow! Congratulations Darren!

It’s amazing how little I make from Adsense… I guess I need to spend some time putting all of your advice to work.

  28. Congratulations! I am so glad I found your site. I love the way you freely share information and I’m looking forward to the course so that I can learn to do what you did.

BTW, I’m at about .75c per day, gunning for $1/day next month. I’ll probably blow that away thanks to you.

  29. What gets to me is now he is going to sell all the poor people a course to bring in more money. What these people don’t realize is that 99% of the blogs out there don’t make any money. Also most folks use free bloggers and adsense doesn’t work in the article and can only put in the sidebar thus you cannot get targeted traffic to that particular statement. Also you have to pay for a .com name and a hosting service lets add that in,all these folks think by buying his class they will become rich.Traffic is another issue these blogs trade traffic to other blogs that get huge traffic 100,00 plus hits a day,no small or free blog will ever get that kind of traffic but lets pay for a class and hope for the traffic .I could go on but hopefully these people that sign up for this kind of classs realize that they are making somebody else rich.

  30. Wow! Congrats Darren!

  31. not bad, but you should to work on your adsense for search figure :-)

  32. congrats darren!!!

  33. […] Also im Vergleich zum bekannten ProBlogger stehe ich schon richtig schlecht da. Der verdient mit den Google Anzeigen über 500 Dollar am Tag. Total irre, aber o-k … macht wahrscheinlich nichts anderes mehr […]

  34. That’s fantastic! Good on you Darren.

  35. Congrats! Now I get to talk to a real Six figure blogger! I can hardly wait!

  36. Dale it’s not a question of paying for a course and then hoping – it’s a course about how to maximise the success of a blog. Of course not everyone will make large amounts of money but that doesn’t make the course illegitimate.

If you can’t afford some basic web hostiing then it would probably be best not to do the course. A domain name, basic hosting and some blogging software is a very small investment to anyone who wants to blog – considering that the main outlay, the computer, is probably already available.

Anyhow, blogs on free sites can be successful. And when I looked at your site, Dale, the AdSense ads seemed reasonably well targeted – well they mentioned R Kelly anyway.

If you think the only reason this course exists is to line the pockets of Darren and Andy, well then I really don’t think you’ve been paying much attention at all.

Why do you even bother coming here (or do you just always expect free advice?) – from your tone I can assume you’ve been reading for some time – or are you just a /. robot with a downer on anyone using some initiative and earning a living from it?

  37. WOW! Very good work. I just had my biggest month also. $233.00 which is far more than expected. The next goal is to hit $300/month.

Keep up the hard work everyone and you will reach your goals.

  38. Congratulations Darren, Thanks for being an inspiration to us all. Enjoy your break.

But I do have a question. Can you explain why you made $15,000 from Adsense Content but only $65 from Adsense Search?

Does this mean Adsense Search isn’t worth having? Or don’t you use it?

    Thanks

  39. Way to go dude! Congrats on such a lofty goal! I hope all of us bloggers can learn a few tricks from you.

    >But I do have a question. Can you explain why you made $15,000 from Adsense Content but only $65 from Adsense Search?

How many times do you use the site search on a website? Most people don’t use it a lot so it’s quite normal that AdSense Search revenue is lagging behind.

  41. Congratucations! Darren you are my Idol! You give more hope to those probloggers wannabe out there. Only sky is the limit! Can’t wait to see you break the record!

  42. That’s really unbelievable! Great work!

  43. […] Darren Rowse over at Problogger has announced that based on Adsense revenue alone he is now officially a Six Figure blogger. I’d note that like most people though that Darren also has advertising agreements in addition to this so I’m guessing next stop might be 7 figure blogger. […]

  44. Well done, Darren. You deserve it, cause I know how hard you work.

I cringed when I saw this post as I know that some flak will come your way (exchange flak with envy/jealousy if you like ;-)

Dale (#29) – you have to pay for a .com name you say … (GoDaddy – $8.95); hosting (many, many hosts from $5 per month) … geez, you want to earn 100K and not spend a little money to get there!!!

And most bloggers won’t make any money – welcome to the world of small business. It’s hard work, and if you want to learn you can get there -might not be 100K+ but anyting is possible.

And finally, you make it sound like it’s bad for Darren & Andy to offer up this course and to make money from it … how dare they try to make some money from offering up their experiences … this is nothing different than a business going to a consultant for specific advice – they’re the experts (a proven fact) and you pay for top advice. That’s business!

What do you expect … everything to be handed to you on a plate ???

  45. The $100,000 Blogger.

There’s a lot of us trying to make a living blogging, but very few of us have hopes as high as Darren Rowse over at Problogging. He topped $100,000 in the last 12 months from…guess…c’mon, you’ll never guess……

  48. looks like a scam to me,
the link to 6 figure blogging is all about enroling in a ‘seminar’ about blogging that costs $270 bux. Are they going to seel you condo’s in Florida as well?
Also I suspect the comments section is Censored so I expect this post to disappear shortly

  49. narf … how wrong you are, on many fronts. Comments section is censored: wrong! You must feel real stupid now – seeing that you were too gutless to provide us a link … now that speaks louder than words!!!

Once again, what’s wrong with running a seminar for profit – it’s business. No one’s forcing you to sign up. So, rather than defame Darren (which is what you did by calling it a scam) why don’t you do your research first.

  50. I mean what else is there to say?

Whoa….some of us like myself are still struggling to attain that ever eluding $1.00 a day….I’m half way there.

But on the real…congrats….Some of us don’t even make half of that at work…..
