How to Make $30,000 a year Blogging

How to Make $30,000 a year Blogging - ProBlogger Darren Rowse gives his best tips.

If you’re anything like the overwhelmed blogger I spoke to a few years ago, who thought making a full time living from her blog was basically impossible, then this episode of the ProBlogger podcast is for you.

The truth is, making a full-time living from blogging means different things to different people – what is a full time income to you might not be enough for the next person, and vice versa. The first thing to do is figure out how much you need to live on (or indeed if you are only looking for a part time income, etc), and work toward earning that amount. The firmer the figure you have, the better chance you have of making it happen. Pie-in-the-sky ideas and vague language like “full-time income” aren’t as helpful.

This particular blogger I spoke to said $30,000 USD would be enough to allow them to quit their current job, but also had never made a dollar from her blog and had almost convinced herself it was impossible.

It’s not impossible, but nor is it a cakewalk. In today’s episode I give three pieces of advice for those of you wanting to change career directions and make a living blogging instead of traditional work. I also provide some of the ways I decided how much I wanted to make, and how I went about achieving those sums. I’ll give the income stream options I had, the ones I tried, and ultimately the ones I ended up using consistently.

I also break down the income models of three different types of blogs: fashion, photography, and food.

When I first reached my target of $50,000 AUD per year, I broke down my income into what percentage came from which income stream (which may very well be different to yours, and is actually different to my income streams as they are currently). I hope you find it useful.

  1. @Darren Rowse

The fact of the matter is, bringing home the bacon from blogging means diverse things to distinctive individuals – what is a full time wage to you won’t not be sufficient for the following individual, and the other way around..

    Darren,
I am a regular reader of your blog, i bought your ’30 day bbb’ book and it has changed my life. I thank you for your awesome books.

  4. this is really a big amount, i think its hard to earn this much, but if one needs to be fully dedicated to blogging to get this landmark

  5. I’m very new to the blogging world and in 4 months, I’ve only got about $2.75 in Adsense revenue. Kinda sad, but this podcast was a reminder to me to be patient, keep diversifying and look to the future. I plan on selling info products as well as continue with Adsense and affiliate marketing as well. But yeah, $30k sounds fantastic to me :)

  6. Hi Darren,

Power lead off tip during the podcast; asking bloggers to find clarity in what they wanted to do money wise leads them in the right direction. I like digging a bit deeper; why would someone want to make money blogging?

To some folks money means freedom. To others it’s a pain in the butt. To yet others money is something to help them just to get by. We want the invisible why in the visible what. The feeling we feel when having money is what we’re after and we can experience that feeling now. But most folks don’t go this route; they set a number goal which doesn’t quite carry the powerful punch, the inspiration, the driver, that would inspire them to do the freeing things WHILE trusting in the process.

Struggling bloggers are like dogs who follow their own tail in an endless circle; they set money goals and when they don’t reach their goals within 1 week or 5 months, they lose complete trust in the monetizing process and quit a sound, proven system, like you’re sharing today. They don’t trust, because their driver sucked…..they wished to devote their lives to numbers on a screen instead of an over powering feeling.

A few bloggers set the money goal with a freeing intent; they make things pop, over time. Good deal.

A few bloggers make freedom the goal; these guys and gals manifest some neat blogging accomplishments but don’t get all that caught up in the money and recognition and stuff.

There is no right or wrong way to do the money goal thing but if you wish to smooth out your journey just a bit, get super clear on a freeing driver/intent, because the motivator moves you into freeing actions – which you trust – and once you begin to full trust in these systems, strategies and techniques, you’ll follow these plan to manifest whatever would free you the most, blogging-wise.

Just beware – many of you excited new bloggers – the paper chase, because it leads to disappointment, failure, or a pretty unsavory taste in one’s mouth. Learned from personal experience of course.

Make freedom the goal and gets super clear on your most freeing dream life to set the foundation for a successful blogging campaign. I did the smart, proven, targeted, intelligent stuff one would do to rock it out only when I made freedom my goal before all else. We’re really after the invisible why in the visible what on such a deeper level, and although following practical tips that are based on the fundamentals work really well, if you have a freeing, good-feeling driver in place you’ll create money and prospering opportunities and so much cool stuff even if you do things from an unorthodox space.

Darren, thanks for the helpful share.

  8. I have read successful bloggers making money just by blogging. If for those who can’t write, they can actually for $5 for each article from fiverr .

Thanks for the great info again

  9. Having a set dollar figure in your blogging marketing goal is very important. I have set one and is working towards it. So what is realistic amount?

  10. Even making $30K via blog may be find funny however if we do it correctly then we can easily earn this amount via blogging.I recommend go with affilate marketing and ads along with the google adsense

  11. Hi Darren,

Thanks for this post and for always sharing insightful and useful content with your community.

    Cheers.

  12. @Darren

  13. $30k sounds a lot and a little. I’m wondering if that can be scalable if you have several blogs on different niches that bring revenue from affiliate links, ads and products. Anyone has some experience?

  14. Wonderful practical article, full of real figures. I love such examples, they motivate much more than generic hints. Thanks for sharing, Darren.

  15. Thanks, for this great article..
i just start my luck on making money via internet. Any advice for new comer like me??

  16. People can easily earn $50k a year from blogging if they create content daily for their blogs. All they have to do is write a 2,000 word post and keep that pattern steady for 6 months, and match the content with relevant advertisers from affiliate programs. It’s not as hard as most people think.

  17. Its very possible to make money online from blogs even in a “third world country” , am a young entrepreneur from ghana and ceo of blackplanettour (http://blackplanettour.com ) – Africa travel blog and i make over 1k euros monthly from google adsense – so if you are from a first world country where more quality advertisers are present you have no excuse not to make money

  18. Build a blog and they will come? Not really, there is a lot of competition out there, the number of blogs in existence is dizzying. Thanks for being so honest about blogging.

  19. Well Everyone has his own views and opinions… Every Blogger wants to make money from blog!!! Btw thanks.. The examples you’ve given in this article will motivate me definitely to work good.. Great Article :)

  20. Very inspirational and informative post Darren. I am also constantly working on my blog to make it quite popular and increase the flow of income from it.
