I just listened to a good podcast at TPN by three of the guys (Nik, Ben and Cameron) from the new Aussie 2Web.

The highlight for me was Nik’s description of Web 2.0 – I’m not sure I’ve heard it explained better.

It’s an interesting piece that I think is not only quite helpful for those experimenting with podcasting but those looking for blogging networks as well. The six models he talks about for podcasting all have been explored with blogging (or are being explored).

Worth a listen if you’ve not seen Jason talk before just to have a bit more of a look at how a professional blogging guru thinks and presents himself.

One of the long standing problems with podcasting for dollars is the business model – and particularly trying to find advertisers willing to sponsor a podcast (in fact finding advertisers can be a problem for bloggers also). Fruitcast is a new service for podcasters that attempts to help them find income streams by matching podcasters and advertisers through a bidding system. On their home page they pitch their service to podcasters by writing:

‘Want to earn income from your labor of love? Putting ads on your podcast is now as easy as signing up for an account and changing the URL of your podcast’s RSS feed. Tasty!’

To advertisers they write:

‘You’ve wanted to advertise on podcasts, but there has never been an easy way to do it—until now! Put your audio spots on multiple podcasts within mere minutes. Yum!’

Fruitcast is a service of Forty Media. I’d be interested to hear how any of your with Podcasts find it if you give it a go.

Thanks to Brian for the heads up on Fruitcast. He’s written more extensively than I on it here.

Cameron may just have been desperate for an interview (or maybe he was impressed my deep thoughts on everything from blogging, to emerging church, to my reflections upon camera phones, to my thoughts on Paris Hilton) because in just a few hours it’s already online. If you’d like to hang out with me in an auditory fashion today you can download the podcast here.

It’s not a purely ‘blogging’ interview – but some of you might be interested.

I had fun and came home again wondering if maybe it’s time to dust off the old microphone and do an occasional podcast myself. Tell me what you think (be brutally honest!).

For those of you following the start of our Canadian Professional Blogging series, thanks for turning in. Tris and I really appreciated the feedback and have built upon that to create a more detailed look at finding your blogging voice.

Having a voice is a key factor in getting noticed, being read, and building up that much needed traffic to your site. However, creating that “voice” may seem like a daunting thing. Many people don’t find writing easy, and that makes it even harder. We hope that our podcast and the notes will help people figure out a path that works for them.

One tip we talk about is reading everything you can find. The writers that appeal to you likely do so because you connect with that voice. Try to apply that same style to how you write and you’ll be one step closer to a distinctive voice. Another tip is to think about your writing verbally – your conversation style should go into your writing. If you are someone who speaks in short bursts, then you can try that out on your blog.

Here is the beginning of the notes that go with the podcast:

• Read a lot online and offline
• Experiment on a “test blog” or personal blog so you can experiment with your topics
• Have fun – try some wacky posts on your personal blog to learn how to write casually consistently
• Practice, practice, practice
Cameron and Mick from the Podcast Network have just put up their first vidcast to celebrate six months of podcasting. The video is interesting – they talk about some of the recent developments of their network and the pressures they are facing. Whilst they seem to be enjoying it it’s pretty clear that its not a walk in the park and that they are facing some challenges – especially around scaling their model up to the next level. Interesting watch.

BitPass have announced a service for helping PodCasters charge for their work via a subscription – enabling a new wave of professional podcasters to hit the airwaves:

‘BitPass Unplugged is a patent-pending, powerful new service that will allow podcasters ranging from hobbyists to mainstream media organizations to introduce à-la-carte and subscription pricing to podcasts. The service leverages the loyalty of a growing number of listeners who prefer to download music, audio blogs, radio shows and other content and have it transferred automatically to portable media devices for listening at the user’s convenience.’

Do you think people will be willing to pay to listen to a podcast? I seem to remember a lot of talk about subscription based blogging a year or two back and the general consensus being that people wouldn’t be willing to pay to read a blog as there were so many other options out there to read.

What do you think?

The Podcast Network have just announced their first sponsor – an Aussie organization named LearnDog who work with teenagers to help them to make good life choices. LearnDog’s website might be a little on the light side of information about who they are and what they do – but they do have a blog that reveals a little more.

LearnDog product manager is quoted in the Australian Newspaper as saying:

‘”Our goal is to launch LearnDog on a global stage so millions of kids can showcase their talents using new media. We aim to create a positive learning experience that helps kids deal with the great youth dangers of suicide and depression.”

LearnDog will use radio, TV, press, and new media, including web blogging, PodCasting, chat and SMS, to provide assistance to 14 to 18-year-olds and disadvantaged people. An animated character called LearnDog will interact with these people. The company was founded by Mark Keough, who also set up Archer College, a Registered Training Organisation that delivers professional training using the latest in educational technologies. Seyfang, a windsurfing fanatic, says LearnDog will help kids to learn stuff by finding ways to show their talents and link them to training and/or well-being programs.

“We want to reach them through media channels like TV, radio, print media and new media channels like web blogs, PodCasting, internet generally, chat and SMS,” he says.`’

I like this concept – new media has so much potential to be a life giving force to many and LearnDog seems to be one example of someone taking steps to test this theory.

Darren Barefoot has an interesting take on Podcasting and why he’s ‘Not Smoking the Podcasting Dope‘. He raises some good points which are similar to some of the concerns I’ve written previously. He writes that podcasting has a shorter tail than blogging and that its less accessible to podcasters than blogging is to bloggers (to paraphrase just two of his main points).

I agree (with regret) with a lot of what Darren says but still hope that with time Podcasting will take off – I especially think it does have potential to be a powerful medium in some niches and that it has some fascinating applications especially internally within businesses – but overall I think it going mainstream could be a while off (if ever).

Two of the books that come to mind when I ponder the differences between Podcasting and Blogging are The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell and the Unleashing the Idea Virus by Seth Godin. Both of these books talk about how some ideas spread like viruses whereas others do not. I wonder if some of the principles in these books might add to what Darren Barefoot has written. I guess the question I am asking today is ‘Is Podcasting Virus Like?‘

One of the reasons I think blogging has spread so prolifically over the past few years is that it is so easy to spread or sneeze for a number of reasons:

- Blogging is Easy – systems like Blogger make setting up a blog a 5 minute task. If it wasn’t I wouldn’t have started my first one.
- Blogging is Free – similarly most blog systems are free (or relatively cheap) – internet access (even dial up) is all it really takes.

Ok – as I’m typing I can hear my Podcasting friends rebutting my argument – blogging wasn’t always so free and easy – in the olden days (a few years back) it was more complicated. It took time for tools to be developed to make it free and easy. Similarly Podcasting is getting easier and will get cheaper to do which should make it more virus like in time.

I agree with this arguement but there is still one principle of the above books that I’m not convinced about with Podcasting in comparison to Blogging.

- The power of the Link – blogging is so powerful because of the hyperlink. The beauty of the blog that I don’t see in the Podcast is its amazing ability to quickly and easily create conversations between bloggers around the globe with a simple link. These links and conversations ensure a complex network of relationships that make the blogging community a dynamic and addictive one to participate in.

I think this is an element in the virus like growth we’ve seen of late in blogging but it is something I’m not seeing (so far) in PodCasting. Perhaps someone will come up with the ‘audio link’ or some new technology that brings more interactivity to podcasting – in fact I’ve no doubt that some smart cookie will come up with something that takes it into a more interactive space – but until they do I remain a little skeptical about the medium.

I’ll finish by saying these are unfinished thoughts and I put them out there not to condemn Podcasters but because I’m fascinated by the medium and am interested this conversation – share your thoughts below.

Do you listen to PodCasts? If so how many per week?

This is the question I’m asking in my inaugural ‘Poll of the Week‘ question – see side bar to vote.

You see I’m fascinated by new media like PodCasting and Vlogging – however I have a few reservations about them also which lead me to wonder how many people actually listen to them.

I regularly listen to a handful of podcasts and have done so now for a few months – but I’ve noticed a change in the past few weeks in my listening habits. I’m listening to less of them and am gravitating to the shorter ones. The main reason is that I just don’t have time to dedicate to some of the longer ones that are out there any more.

My suspicion is that most web users are like me and are lazy and don’t put much time or more importantly effort into their surfing habits. We scan websites and flick from site to site spending just a few moments in each place and only really stopping to read or interact with a site if it is super high quality, has real novelty value or if it meets a real or urgent need.

Podcasting on the other hand takes time and a little energy to get into. I’m not saying there is no value in it (I really enjoy those that I listen to) – just that I’m not sure the average web user will find it as accessible as blogging. I mean in the time that it takes me to listen to an hour long podcast I can surf 20 or 30 blogs. Sure I can do both at once, but the fact is that I rarely do.

I think it will take a significant shift of mindset for PodCasting to go mainstream where as blogging is more suited and familiar to the average web user and therefore has bigger potential reach. I believe this mainly because in most aspects blogs are not much different to an average website. Quite often people surf blogs without actually realizing that they do. Time and time people ask me what a blog is only to find that they already regularly surf them. PodCasting on the other hand is a little different.

I’m trying not to put a dampener on the PodCasting thing here – I’ll say again I enjoy them – but I wonder how far they go. Lets hope my suspicions are wrong.

Last night I fell asleep thinking of Podcasting – ok I know that is a twisted and screwed up thing to admit but its true. I was pondering the podcasting business model question and starting wondering what business applications podcasting could have. When it comes to blogging the business blog is said to be the ‘next big thing’ – as a result blogging consultants are popping up everywhere – so in what ways might the humble podcast be used in business and when will we see the first pod consultant?

That is about as far as my pondering got – I’d been out with some friends at the pub and it was late and I was slurring my thoughts a little. Anyway – this morning I start running through my morning RSS rounds and find Cameron might just have answered the question about podconstultants – it could be him. He’s just written a post titled – My first podcasting client?

‘I don’t want to say too much at this stage, but over the last couple of days I’ve been having a VERY interesting conversation with a senior manager from a tier one US company who is interested in engaging my services to help produce an internal podcast for a certain segment of their staff around the world.

The idea is something like this:

This company has thousands of people around the world all doing the same job. It’s a difficult job and one not really appreciated by other members of the team. So this person has been appointed to bring these staff from around the world into a community. Get them talking, listening, sharing, debating.’

Very interesting.

Just saw this one also. Its an official podcast of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists . We’ll see more of this I guess.

Listening to a good interview with Mick and Cameron from G’day World on a Podcast with the Blog Herald. Of particular interest to me was their comments about finding a business model for podcasting. I won’t quote them directly here (editing out the ‘vulgarities’ that some complain of..hehe) but they suggest that they’d like to look at doing a similar thing to the guys at Weblogs Inc with podcasting – ie provide the infrastructure for a stable of podcasters who each produce quality podcasts on their own areas of expertise.

Sounds like a great idea – I am fast coming to see the benefits of the podcast both as an addition to a blog but also as a medium in its own right.

The challenge is to find ways of paying for it (it has a lot more overheads than the average blog) but I suspect that this wouldn’t be too hard once they become a little more widely listened to.

Mick and Cameron talk about how their latest interview with Scoble was downloading 2000+ times in a couple of days. Sounds to me like their product is getting to a level where some smart advertiser should jump on board and test the effectiveness of promoting their product or service through their next big name interview.
