New Year, New Start – What Have We Done?

Posted By Stacey Roberts 31st of January 2014 Community Discussion, General 0 Comments

It’s January 31 – the end of the month where we make and break New Year’s resolutions and swear to do better next time.

If you’re anything like me, you may have thought about what you want to do with your blog this year, and where you want to go. Maybe wrote down a couple of changes, or a few ideas to try. Unlike me, you’ve probably also made a start on a few of these, and started 2014 blogging with a bang.

What we’d like to know is: what have you done differently this month? What kinds of things have you thought you might like to do with blogging this year? What new changes have you made, and do you think they will work for you?

Feel free to have a chat in the comments, or link to a post you’ve written about your blogging goals for this year. We’d love to hear an update on how we’re all travelling one month in.

Here’s to 11 more of success!

  1. I think the biggest change and improvement has been the need to accept things as they are, and really move forwards more confidently – without being too judgmental on myself. It’s so easy to get distracted by all the ‘experts’ and ‘professionals’ in the field.

I’m now practicing doing all my planned tasks, before I jump to activities that pretty much count like leisure time.

  2. Hi Darren,

This is the first time I’m commenting on your blog though I had been following your blog for quite sometime now. I had set resolutions to launch my blog on January 1 and had done so, but the next resolutions hasn’t yet fulfilled. Writing part is taking away most of the time for which the marketing of the blog is getting impacted. However, I’m constantly setting deadlines and striving to meet my goals of marketing it more often.

That sounds like you’ve started out on the right track! Writing is always going to take up the bulk of your time in the beginning. Good luck!

I am becoming aware of the impact of Discipline, Focus, Routine, and generally of Health (and the requirement for both mental clarity and high energy) in order to accomplish my goals. Distractions and low energy come far too easily and they are costing me. Hope you find that helpful and it makes you stop and think. Good Luck to All!

    • Stacey Roberts says: 02/03/2014 at 9:14 am

Ooh yes, good health is the best foundation! Good luck to you took, Joe.

  4. My wife started writing on my blog this year. One post of her own, and she’s been adding comments within my posts on two others. Extremely well received. Two weeks in a row, I broke my most views per day record (I post once a week).

  5. I am actually really proud of achieving one of my new years resolutions – through January I ran a blog series and at the end of the series I released my first e-Book. I was 8 months pregnant (9months now, and still pregnant) when I started, so I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to truly commit to the project but I did, and now its done!

    • Stacey Roberts says: 02/03/2014 at 9:15 am

Oh that is a good feeling! Congratulations on sticking it out. And good luck with your baby!

  6. Although I’ve been a full-time IM’er for close to four years, the end of last year was the first time I ever sat down and wrote a real marketing plan for my business. You might wonder how I can do without that, but I can. I’m pretty good at shooting from the hip…But then again, that’s my big weakness.

Now that we’re 1/12th through the year, I sat down to see what effect my business plan had had…Guess what? Not much! Ouch! Why? Well, I’ve realized that I have a problem with creativity! Sounds nuts, but I can think of more projects than I can get to. Not fluff, either. Stuff that will make an impact on my business. Problem is all of these take a time commitment, and if I spend time on A, I take it from B. Get too many A’s, B’s, and C’s going and I’m not making progress.

This is kind of like getting married, when you agree to “forsake all others”. Difficult in some sense. So, February is the month of putting the blinders on and focusing only on what I decided to do in my marketing plan in December. We’ll see how that goes.

    • Stacey Roberts says: 02/03/2014 at 9:16 am

Oh what a good idea. I also don’t business plan, nor do I really do much strategy. But it’s so useful, and I think brings great returns when you put the effort in. Here’s to a great February!

  7. Stacey,

I have stuck to my goal of publishing 5 posts a day. I released my first product. I had my first live cash gifting team webinar via Google Hangouts. I am also living the internet lifestyle in Thailand, pulling back from my work to enjoy my spoils.

    So far, so good ;)

    • Stacey Roberts says: 02/03/2014 at 9:17 am

Wow, you are really hitting the ground running! that’s awesome. What momentum :)

  8. Indeed! It is a great new year start for me.
Hope it goes far better than the previous year.
    Fingers crossed. :)

  9. The year of 2014 is best year for me. I’ve got a friend. She love me more than her life.

  10. I had set resolutions to work on my own blog from 1st January and had done but didn’t get much traffic,so working on that.Hopefully i will get huge traffic…..:)

  11. Apart from world domination or destruction .. I’m never sure which I’d prefer. This is the year I win people ‘ with honest trifles and betray them in deepest consequence’. Or as others put it .. monetize my blog. Of course before I do that I need to actually start it. Ho hum – so little time, so much to do – roll on 2015.

Messing aside – to do list is

    1. Start Blog – finally
    2. Figure out what works for me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pininterest and Vine etc
    3. Finish a video tutorial series I’m working on.
    4. Convince wife to write more poetry notes for her blog.
    5. Give up smoking.

See ya in 2015 – I might be half way through the list by then.

    • Stacey Roberts says: 02/03/2014 at 9:20 am

Get started on that blog! The sooner you do, the sooner you can betray people… or whatever, haha. No seriously, it’s a wonderful new world full of possibility, this blogging caper. Go and make a go of it :)

      Oh, and give up smoking!

  12. I am starting a store and selling online fashion products through blog http://fashiongrin.com and start one more blog on hosting http://usadomainhosting.com .

  13. My goal for the new year is to totally change the ratio between things I don’t want to do and things I do want to do. It takes midfulness in decision-making and action-taking. The funny thing is that with mindfulness, some of things on don’t want side become do wants.

    • Stacey Roberts says: 02/03/2014 at 9:21 am

I know, isn’t it amazing what can happen when we change our mindset? I like the idea of tipping the balance to ensure there’s more things we want to do actually happening.

  14. Have made resolution for new blog. “Less post but quality post” :)

    • Stacey Roberts says: 02/03/2014 at 9:23 am

I think a lot of people have made that one! Must be a good idea. Good luck :)

  15. This month has been crazy for me. My new year’s resolution was to finish my eBook by May and have it published by the end of the year. I got so excited that it’s already finished and published! I also decided to transfer schools and get my degree in professional writing as well as start freelance writing and blogging full time. I love these changes!

    • Stacey Roberts says: 02/03/2014 at 9:26 am

Wow, you are kicking all the goals! Well done! Isn’t it great when you ride that wave of motivation.

  16. well didn’t do much yet but hoping the new year 2014 will be more better for me. I made a goal that everyday i will post atleast 10 post but every day i failed. may be sometimes 8 or may be 2 in a day. After writing 2 to 3 articles i feel i need to do some search and forget to go for the 4th one. 2013 was really bad for me i hope this new year will start with good things.

  17. Last year I had 5 books published & ended the year shattered.

I am implementing a better work life balance.

I will stop work at 8pm!

I am trying to nap during the day for 20 mins.

    I will exercise.

I am trying to drink a vegetable juice every day.

Every waking moment was about work, and I am working on changing that!

I also want to / will start a podcast this year!

  18. I have given my website a fresh new look.
This was my goal: a new year and a new look.

Next up a writing course to hopefully improve the quality of my writing.

  19. I ran a comment contest on my blog. It was moderately successful for January, and I got a sponsor for February with an even better product. The person with the most number of comments at the end of the month wins. It supports my goals for building community, and it supports my goals for having a discussion-based blog. But it is something brand-new that I’ve only done the first time in the 3.5 years I’ve had my blog.

  20. New, year new hope. Not only in personal but in business plan. Love happiness and great moments. That`s about it.

  21. This new year bring me lot of things which i want last year, but it happen now. my dream is to become NO 1 blogger in india and i have work on it.

  22. I chose a word to represent the New Year: Reach. I’m working on extending my “physical reach” regularly after some shoulder problems. I haven’t done as much to extend my “online reach,” but little by little.

  23. I have actually been implementing a lot of -self discipline. Mainly, waking up at 5am everyday and working on my blog. It wasn’t so much of a resolution, but it was a goal.

  24. I stopped blogging last year. And my new year resolution is to write frequently and read the top pro bloggers blog

  25. Happy new year of the wooden horse, praying for more blogging opportunities to come.

  26. My new year resolution is to work more hard than last year.

  27. My resolution this year Hope it goes far better than the previous year.

  28. I every time used to read paragraph in news papers but now as I
am a user of net therefore from now I am using net for
articles or reviews, thanks to web.

  29. Happy new year to you all.

  30. I started writing on my blog this year. One post of my own, and I has been adding comments within my posts on two others. Extremely well received. Two weeks in a row, I broke my most views per day record (I post once a week).

  31. As a freelancer my goal of blogging is only to attract traffic to the certain blog or in the website in which the blog belongs to. Working with these i have observed my errors that has been done by me again and again over the years. Because for different purposes the blogger and the blog both have to serve differently as the demands of time and places are different. Initially the the problem is to grab the first few hundred traffics since it comes very slow. So i have decided that if i can spend few more, then i shall obviously do some advertisement for the initial time and later i shall obviously apply to the google adsence, which i think, at least for now, would be very beneficial for my professional blogging.

  32. It’s easy to get sidetracked by following many blogging experts and other self-proclaimed gurus in the field. So for this year, I’ll make sure to filter the information I’m going to feed my mind with. I’ll read only the works of those who offer sensible and essential advice and try to apply their principles to improve my blogging.
