What does it take to Succeed?

We often look outside of ourselves when we ask “What does it take to succeed?”

Surely, others know more about success than you, so following their advice will lead to success.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and while I think it’s true that you have to at some point seek outside mentorship, to really be successful, it comes down to a three things.

Consistency, Practice & Routine.

But first, watch this video.

Now you may wonder what the heck beatboxing has to do with blogging, and on the surface the answer is very little.

But watch this video a little closer.

This is a guy, on a stage, making sounds with his mouth… and people are cheering him on.

Technically, you could beatbox. If you’re reading this, I’m assuming you have a mouth and you make sounds with it.

But what this guy has done that you haven’t is practiced. Constantly.

How many hours years do you think he’s spent in the mirror practicing his patterns.

When he’s got nothing to do, what do you think he does?

The same as you might stare at tabloids in the grocery line, or playing a song in your head, he’s probably making beats under his breath.

I don’t know if this guy won the competition but I know he was good enough to compete.

And I know the only way he could compete was by practicing his skill more than anyone who didn’t take the stage, or make this far in the competition.

And I know that he’s got the same tools as you. What sets him apart is his willingness to practice, consistently, on a routine.

…something to think about next time you sit down to write.

  1. Hey,

Thanks for the video. Really appreciated! :)

  2. Its a good rule for life. Its often stated that it takes 10,000 hours of doing something to become an expert, that has always seemed something of a generalisation to me but experitise sure takes time. Too many people expect the results without the effort, which is why Internet Marketers make a goodliving selling get rich quick schemes (guess what? – They dont work!).

  3. We need a lot of time and work if we want to succeed.
    Success does not come overnight.

If you are having fun at work, it’s much better and easier!

  4. Hi Tommy,

The strange thing about success is that it comes down to desire and belief. Like, you want to succeed, so you practice developing your skills, and you build up your belief in self along the way. As you persist, success finds you. Anybody can succeed. I read a story about a billionaire who said his life changed when he decided not to live on a park bench anymore. A decision. Awesome points here.

I intentionally write expanded comments because I receive an opportunity to improve my writing skills and make a friend. As a blogger, improving my writing skills and making friends with fellow bloggers is what my gig is all about. Since I practice 2 to 3 times daily on my blog, and goodness knows how many times I practice writing by leaving comments, I improve.

You do need to be hungry, but when you realize that your brutal persistence and devotion to your craft can set you apart from the masses you will simply bust your tail until you become wildly successful in any endeavor.

Keep at it. You can do it. Believe, practice and succeed, because success WILL find you, now, or some time down the road.

    Thanks Tommy,

    Ryan

  5. Hi Tommy, this should be hard pure work over the years, it is clear this guy is a passionate and hard worker. I think we should find something we like, something we love really, then we find motivation to practice it again and again. Nice post.

  6. Tommy

This hit home as someone who just recently began blogging I quickly realized I am not a natural writer. But In time with practice I know it will improve! Soon il be beatboxing with the rest of em ;)

  7. Very true, it takes a lot of deliberate practice. In fact my last post was on this topic, related to the 10,000 hour rule which I’m sure a lot of you have heard of.

  8. It takes quite differently to succeed by every one. Some are lucky enought to achieve success in a little time while some others have to spend their whole life for it. It means main thing is strategy or how do you plan to achieve success. If you plan works well you are lucky enought to succeed early else you have to wait for quite a long time to kiss the beautiful face of success. In both the cases you win and this must be your ultimate objective to win either early or late.

  9. Very inspiring, success is how you set it, how high you want it to be. However, it’s matter of time you put on what you do to take your goal to the next level.

  10. There’s a quote I love by President Calvin Coolidge:

“Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

I’m still at the beginning my career and my personal blog, but I always keep this quote in mind. You can’t expect success to come over night. It requires hard work, and the hard work is what makes it feel so good when you get there.

  11. If you personally ask me, I think it takes a whole lot of maturely dealing with rejection in order to succeed. The best of the best know nothing comes easy. And, if you really want something in life, you have to be willing to keep going the extra mile! :-)

  12. I think you said it all with those three words, consistency, practice, and routine. There really is no short cut to SUCCESS.

  13. Your article has really filled me with ocean full of energy! Thanks so much for this super article. Do keep us energized with such motivational articles

  14. This is refreshing to hear. I know people that always say to wait on monetizing and I didn’t really see a point. I did have reservation about Adsense. When I was reading the terms of service agreement, it said they reserved the right to cancel an account if their click-through quota for a few months wasn’t met, but they didn’t give any exact numbers.

I went ahead and signed up, thinking that, at its worst, it would motivate me to get serious about trying to build traffic. Has anyone else experienced this or know of anyone who had their account canceled simply because they weren’t generating enough clicks?

  15. Thanks for the video. Really appreciated! :)
