Get More Clicks Using These 3 Emotional Hot Buttons

Here’s what the top internet marketers know that most people don’t…

It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to get traffic from social media sites, article directories, or through Google’s organic search. The three most effective ways to get someone to click on your links is to invoke one of these three emotional hot-buttons:

  1. pain
  2. pleasure
  3. curiosity.

Let’s take a look at each of these three emotions and how they can get you more traffic and more clicks.

1. Pain

MayhemMost people will do more to avoid pain than they will to gain pleasure. Marketing firms all around the world have know this for decades. Advertisers have placed fear statements into ads in order to get us to take action. And guess what? It works! Advertising firms have made trillions of dollars using fear as a motivator to get us to take action.

The “mayhem” Allstate commercials on US TV are all fear-based. Most political campaigns are fear-based. Heck, the next time you watch TV, pay attention to the commercials and see which of the three emotional hot buttons they’re using to motivate their audiences.

So how can you use fear (pain) to get more traffic?

Most of what we do online is driven by headlines. Our tweets are short headlines. Our blog posts and pages are effectively links with headlines. Our videos, Facebook pages, and articles are all propelled by headlines. We all decide which links to click based on the text, and our own personal desires.

Examples of fear- and pain-based headlines

  1. The Top 3 Reasons Most Entrepreneurs Fail Online
  2. 6 Things To Avoid if You’re Going To Be Successful
  3. Here’s Why Most Blogs Fail Within 24 months

If you can target your headlines (that is, links) so that they’ll speak to the emotions (pain, pleasure, curiosity) of your audience, you’ll not only attract better prospects, but you’ll quadruple your clickthrough rate.

2. Pleasure

Everyone wants to know “What’s in it for me? Why should I pay attention to you?” So you’ll get more clicks and traffic if you can tell your readers what benefits they’ll get by clicking your links. Let your readers visualize the pleasure they’ll receive from taking action.

Examples of pleasure- and benefit-based headlines

  1. Top 3 Ways To Boost Productivity and Profits
  2. Double Your Subscribers Within 14 Days
  3. Earn a 6 Figure Income Part Time

3. Curiosity

This is by far my favorite. We are all born with a sense of curiosity. From infants to old age, we all have an incredible appetite for the unknown.

You’ve seen or heard TV and radio personalities use curiosity to keep us from changing the channel. Just before a commercial break, the radio or TV personality will spit out a headline that piques our curiosity, so we’ll stay tuned in for the answer.

HooksThey’ll say something like, “When we return, we’ll reveal how you can save hundreds on your property taxes.” or “When we come back, you’ll hear why President Obama doesn’t want you to see his birth certificate.”

These curiosity-provoking statements are also called “hooks.”

Some examples of curiosity headlines

  1. Shrink Your Fat Zones
  2. 8 Lies About Sunscreen
  3. The NO-Pill Pain Remedy
  4. 3 Things To A More Effective Blog
  5. The 1 Thing All Bloggers Must Do To Make Money

Target your headlines

Again, your headlines should be targeted towards your readership. The more they speak directly to your audience, using these three emotions, the more clicks and traffic you’ll receive.

Note that it’s important to make sure your content is worthy of the headline. Nothing will turn people off more than a great headline, that “gets the click” but doesn’t deliver on the promise.

Everything we do on the internet revolves around headlines and links. If you get good at writing clickable headlines using these three emotions, you’ll easily get more traffic.

  1. Hi, Glen
nice article. It really does make sense. It seems to me that this will be a lot easier for all those who have a blog about blogging, than about some other things. I have a blog about coffee, so it does seems little complicated. But I think I will came up with something. Thanks a lot for the tips!

  2. I hadn’t thought about these tactics. To be honest, some sources recommended three other topics to get traffic – sex, money, and health.

Thanks for sharing this. This definitely has gotten me thinking differently for my next blog posts.

  3. I’ve used curiosity several times to boost clicks and sales on my niche blogs. I also believe that adding a figure on the headline can generate more conversion. When I write copy for small business entrepreneurs, one thing I tell them is the importance of a subtitle.

In as much as the headline is important, the subtitle is equally vital. What do you think about bullet points and how does it relate to these emotional triggers?

    • Hey Michael, this strategy works well for sub-titles, and especially bullet points. Emotion is what drives our action.

      Thanks for the comment!

  4. When I started to read this article the very first part I saw in it was the three highlighted points in the very beginning of it. And then I just flowed with the article. The way it got started and the way you ended it it is a sign of brilliant writing.

As I myself write articles for blog I can understand how difficult this task could be! But you really did justice to your chosen topic.

One more thing I liked in this article – the way you present three-three example for each point. The time I read three examples for the first topic – pain, I got really excited to read another three for next point.

    Good work, Glen. :)

  5. I think the one you guys have missed is the reverse physocology , what i mean to say is using words like dont click here and dare you not to click here really works :)

    • I never click on “don’t click here” and definitely not dares.

This article is fairly true for me, although I tend to click on curiosity more than the other two.

    • No, it is considered a spam title.

  6. Hey Glen,

Here you’ve discussed about those three emotional hot buttons which I’ve never heard before and that is something which can really work if we follow it in right way. Curiosity is something which can be done in our blog also. For example, We can also curiosity to keep our readers active on our blog by adding the next headline in our blog and talk a little bit about it in advance. Am I right?

    • You are right Ehsan. A good writer holds our attention by consistently hitting these emotional hot buttons.

      Thanks for a great comment!

  7. Hi Glen,

Solve problems. Help people to picture their dreams. We are emotional creatures. We see a headline which resonates with our feelings and click instantly. No thinking, just reacting. All emotion, no logic. Power points here.

Picture yourself as your prospect or reader. Put yourself in their shoes. What are their problems or worries? What do they dream about? ID these emotions. Craft into post topics and pen a creative headline which speaks to their pain or pleasure.

Curiosity piques interest like few other emotions. Another instant reaction when you just NEED TO KNOW what the deal with the post is ;)

    Thanks Glen!

    Ryan

    • Hey Ryan, you’re right on about curiosity, and how that simple emotion carries so much influence in our lives, online, and off.

Thanks for the awesome comment, and insight!

      Glen

  8. Hi Glen,
Great post. First get to know your best customer and what keeps them up at night worrying. Create How to , 5 Ways etc and solve their problem(s). It helps to entertain them at the same time and of course, keep them….

  9. Thanks for sharing. Great post Glen. Outstanding suggestions, especially for a beginner like me.
Thanks a lot for this Glen Andrews , it’s really appreciated!

  10. Duly noted. I, personally, am fan of the curiosity headline. I get tempted by it a lot myself. I’ll be applying these tips more often. Thanks!

  11. Although I hate to admit it, using FEAR is one of the most powerful tools to get people to do what you want. Religion & politics have this down to a science.

  12. A nice concise post on headlines. I feel that you can never have enough advice on headlines. But posts like these make it easier to put them into action. Will try adding more emotion into my post headlines in the future.

  13. These were some really great tips for article headlines! I will definitely implement them in future articles, especially that they work very well in my niche (Fitness).

  14. Boiling it down to 3 easy categories is very helpful. Excellent analysis and easy to implement – thanks Darren!

  15. Well, curiosity is the most interesting part to get hooked up, as pointed “when we return, we’ll reveal how you can save hundreds on your property taxes” is a good example. Mostly everyone has some intention to act upon, so describing the benefits they’ll get from taking an action is really a good strategy to follow. Thanks Glen for this wonderful and interesting post, it’s really appreciated :)

  16. Fantastic post! I’m going to be doing some title changes for my upcoming scheduled posts! I’ve just been including titles that tell you what you get, focusing on keywords. I’m excited to try and class them up a bit too.

  17. Definitely believe that which you stated. Your favorite reason seemed
to be on the internet the simplest thing to be aware of.
I say to you, I certainly get annoyed while people think about worries that they just don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing without having side effect , people can take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks
