Posted By Darren Rowse 20th of August 2010 ProBlogger Site News 0 Comments

copywriting-scorecard-bloggers.jpgYou’re about to hit Publish on your next blog postbut is it up to scratch?

  • Is it compelling?
  • Is it easy to read?
  • Is it grammatically correct?
  • Is it optimised for search engines?

Wouldn’t it be great to have an editor by your side to look over your next blog post before you hit Publish, to make sure it’s really ready?

Today I’m excited to announce a brand new ProBlogger resource – The Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers. It’s a system to help you get your posts ready to publish and well optimized for readers… and Google.

I’ve been working on this for months with another Great Aussie blogger and experienced Copywriter – Glenn Murray from Divine Write and am excited not only because it’s comprehensive and will help many bloggers – but also because for the next two weeks it is only $9.97 USD!

Why the Copywriting Scorecard is Important

As bloggers we know how important content is to the success of our blogs and we all know how those little things can make a big difference to the impact of that content.

We know the theory – but if you’re anything like me there are days where you hit Publish on posts that could be better.

The Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers is a downloadable eBook providing a list of recommendations to follow, as well as pitfalls to avoid, as you write that next blog post. It’s a checklist of things that are common in most great copywriting and mistakes that are commonly found in ineffective copy.

All up, there are 63 things to consider, all comprehensively explained and divided into these four easy to read sections:

  1. Writing — How to write engaging compelling posts.
  2. Scannability — How to ensure your posts are easy to scan read.
  3. Search engine optimization (SEO) — How to write posts that Google will like.
  4. Grammar — How to avoid errors that undermine your credibility.

Then, once you’ve read the recommendations, simply print out a scorecard, check how many recommendations you’ve incorporated into your post, then add up your score for a total out of 100. The higher your score, the more effective your post is likely to be (I scored 85/100 on this post).

Using the Scorecard you’ll quickly identify things you can improve to help your post reach its full potential – all before hitting Publish

In addition to the printable Scorecard – you’ll also get plenty of teaching explaining each element as well as 2 additional chapters of teaching – one looking at principles to consider before you start writing and another on writing your posts.

  4. Hey Darren,

  5. to answer: Yes, yes, yes,and yes.

Seems like a good product for new bloggers, I learned mistakes by just doing it. Copywriting (post titles) and grammar were my weak points.

  6. This is a great idea. I am intrigued enough to give it a shot!

  7. It’s a really useful guide, I downloaded it this morning and have read through most of it. It’s great to have a checklist to refer to ( at least until all of the points become ingrained as habits!).

Also, thanks for not beating me over the head with a thousand launch emails. It’s so refreshing to just get an email with a bit of relevant information and a link to the product.

Just bought your eBook and I’m looking forward to using it for my new website. It’ll be launched soon and this will probably help me out!

    Thanks so much!

  9. Sounds like a great idea! The obvious stuff like posting engaging content and checking for spelling and grammar errors is a no-brainier, but I’m sure there are plenty of other things to ensure a quality blog post that are often overlooked. Thanks for offering a comprehensive list!

  10. Awesome. I’m seriously considering getting this ebook. I’ll also share this post to my friends.

  11. Darren,

I just started the 31DBBB yesterday. When this is over I’ll be sure to grab this one.

    thx

  12. think I’ll get the book too since I have so much to learn.

  13. It looks like a very interesting product. It seems like it could be very useful.

  14. I went ahead and bought the Scorecard a few minutes ago. It cost less than I spent on coffee and french fries yesterday, and I figured it would probably have more positive long-term effects. :)

    Here’s what I found:

    – Unannounced bonus, yay! I won’t say what the bonus is, but it put a smile on my face – thanks Darren!
    – Beautifully designed with an attractive color scheme and easy-to-follow layout.
    – No fluff – every single page contains concrete, useful info.
    – The questionnaires are great. I’ve been struggling with developing a core message and the first questionnaire will really help me focus my thinking. I’m going to print it out and sit down with it quietly this afternoon.
    – The ebook is specifically about writing blog posts, but I’m finding that a lot of the advice and recommended strategies apply just as well to other kinds of writing – short stories, novels, essays, even poetry, believe it or not!

I’m only halfway through reading this and I’m feeling really good about the purchase. I’m planning on actively using the scorecard to help me write better blog posts. I’ll let you know how it works out for me, but so far my first impressions have been overwhelmingly positive.

Thanks Darren. I don’t usually make snap purchases online, but because of how much valuable free content you give away, I felt really comfortable buying the scorecard. Thanks for all you do to help new bloggers. :)

  15. I’d have to say I completely agree with the points that Antonia have made. I’ve only just bought it and was pleasently suprised by all the same things she was.

Totally awesome Darren & Glenn, thanks so much. Though I’m yet to sit down and read it, (I’m at work as I write this comment), I am really looking forward to devouring this one!

  16. Want to know how good this ebook is? I followed the advice in it when I wrote my blog post promoting it (very meta), and its resulted in more affiliate sales in the first 24 hours than any other promotion I’ve ever run.

Can’t argue with results like that.

  17. Finally! This is a great idea for people that really have no idea where to start and how they can develop blog posts that are just as powerful as the “big guys.”

  18. There’s something rather odd with some of the formatting on the PDF, at least when I view it in the Preview application on Mac OS X.

In particular, I assume that the scorecard section has headings next to each +/- point, before the explanatory paragraphs, yet all I see is a series of orangey-brown gradients, no text (not even white on white text).

Any chance of looking into this – I don’t think it’s my system as all other PDFs have opened fine.

  19. I did not know you were working on ebook, Neat! I think it is important to double check before publishing. You can always correct later as most readers are cool with that, but it is nice to be right the first time!

  20. Thanks for sharing this. I have bought your 31DBBB course. I will be using the information you have provided on my next website.

  21. this is interesting. I think i have to buy one. Woooooooot!

  22. Nice tool, looks very important for all bloggers especially the new ones.. thanks for the link Darren.

  23. Would definitely check it out today…right now driving back to home…excited to see it now. Hopefully it will deliver what has been promised here ;)

  24. Ordered the book and am looking forward to applying the knowledge I gain, as I return to a more regular blogging schedule.

  25. I have just bought this too to have reviewed on our blog.

I really loved the US/British differentiations in the spellings of certain words. It’s the detail that make this a cracking read.

Well done to the both of you, am impressed with what I have read so far.

  26. I bought The Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers but used my husband’s Paypal account. It shows that we paid but I don’t have the link to download the e-book. Could somebody help me?

    thanks,
    Debbie

  27. I reckon I’d scored about 55 out of 100. Well that is what Hubpages says my average articles are worth on their point system. :P

  28. Don’t worry, I had to download the Adobe Reader bloatware in order to see the graphics used in place of text (!) Not 100/100 for usability, I’m afraid.

  29. I’ve been reading your blog for a while today. I’m sucked in. You have some amazing blogging resources on here.

I am going to pick up the copywriting scorecard.

  30. I agree with James – let’s keep this secret. :)

Seriously, I love this resource. It’s so useful to have a handy list of all the key points.

As my next blog posts rolls around in my head, it is now joined by whispered tips from this e-book – making it all the better

  31. Darren

I just purchased the ebook and read the entire thing within an hour. Yes, it was that engaging. I can’t even tell you how much it’s helped me already. There’s so much I have overlooked when it comes to my archaeology site, and I’ve really been banging my head around, looking for a way to take the next step. I will be utilizing the tips for my next post, of course, it will take me a bit longer to proofread this time with my checklist.

  32. I am sure this will be a worth to read.

Just read few lines about this book at Danniel blog (Dailyblogtips.Com) and really like it the way Danniel said.

  33. This is why you’re the best Darren. I just finished the 31day challenge with the SITS girl. I thought, “Wow, now that I don’t have a daily exercise, how will I keep myself motivated?” So, you put this right in lap and make it so affordable how can I not buy it? I learned so much from the Build A Better Blog e-book, I’m confident this will move me forward by leaps and bounds. You give so much great info in a down to earth friendly way. I still have a LONG way to go, but I know how to get there thanks to you. I’ll shut up now and go download this.

  34. That looks like a very useful e-book and $9.97 is a good price for it, too. Thank you!

  35. Thanks for all the kind comments, guys. We’re very proud of this book, and we worked hard on it, so it’s nice to hear you’re enjoying it.

@Andy Merrett Not sure what’s happening with the PDF format. It was created with Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended.

Any other Mac users having trouble viewing the PDF?

@Antonia Thanks again for your kind comments. Appreciate you going to so much effort to provide such helpful feedback here.

If anyone else has any suggestions about what else we could include in future updates, we’d love to hear them!

    Cheers.
    Glenn (co-author)

  36. Buying this book for sure!

  37. I have been receiving an email course from this guy named Brad Callen. He is an expert at SEO and his courses are truly invaluable. In my opinion I think he is probably the best person to help you.

  38. Is it compelling?
    Is it easy to read?
    Is it grammatically correct?
Is it optimised for search engines?

absolutely write if you have all these thing in the blog ,then your blog has the availability to go in good form because good blog need all these things. nice blog specially for the new bloggers…

    thanks for sharing…

  39. I just bought this book and i found it very, very usefull. I have a blog for about 3 years now, but never stoped to build a scorecard or a checklist to check on my posts.

I’ll make a good use of it.

    Thanks.

  40. I too agree with James …why should we tell this to everyone?

  41. Hi Darren,

I created an Excel file that can be used as a Scorecard in place of the printed Scorecard for your new book, “Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers.”

I sent it to you today in a seperate E-mail.

If you can use it, give it away, whatever, feel free. I know I can’t make it available, so I thought you might want to add it as a bonus for those who buy the book.

Please let me know if it needs to be modified in any way.

    Blessings!

    Chuck

  42. i always used to do that myself and honor self by 10/10! but i need to get this text for correct analysis!
    thanks anyways

  43. I must say that I am a fan of this site! I have learned so much regarding blogging “do’s” and “dont’s”. The launch of this copywriting scorecard would actually help me more in creating a more compelling blog!
Are there other great downloads like this one that I can use a tool for the development of blogs?

  44. Since the Google Algorythm has changed, would this scorecard works better?

  45. Hi Reza. Google changes its algorithm often. But the principles of SEO copy are pretty consistent. Ultimately what happens is that Google looks for meaning in the same places that readers look for meaning. The ebook tells you how to optimize these places for Google. It’s not a comprehensive guide to SEO copywriting, but it’s most of what a typical blogger would need to know. (And there might be a bonus inside that would please someone who’s interested in SEO copy… ;-)
