What Are You Doing with Your Blog Over the Holidays?
What are you doing with your blog over the holidays?
As the end of the year draws nearer I’ve been pondering what to do with my blogs over the Christmas/New Years break.
In the past I’ve done a number of things including:
- Blogging on as normal
- Getting a Guest in to cover the blog over a week
- Running a special series of ‘lighter’ posts
- Running a variety of guest posts
This year I’m going to do something I’ve not done before – take a break from blogging for a whole week.
I will be putting up a few posts over the week that are wrap up posts looking back at the year that has been on different topics – but these will be written in advance and set to go off so that I can have a break from blogging between Christmas and New Years. I won’t be having the week off completely though – I have a couple of other writing commitments that I need to finish off so will use the week to tackle those.
What are you doing with your blog over the holidays?

I’m gonna leave my blog alone, because I won’t have regular internet access during the holidays.

A few “lighter” type blog posts and one or two ‘end of year round up’ types.
Then start again in earnest 2 Jan.

I will be working hard at my blog. I have a pretty big competition I am setting up to launch my blog so want to be posting right through.
The goal is to use the holiday time to stockpile posts, probably several months worth which I can use as risk management so that if I ever get sick or am forced to take a break I can do so without worrying about disappointing my readers.

I fall into the “carry on as normal” category, so I’ll blog through the break, but take lots of bursts of time off as well.
Thanks Darren for another terrific year of help and information, and have a great Christmas!

When I’m on Holiday I usually carry my laptop and post an every todays atleast, but when I’m not at all able to blog i’ll tell my friend to write a post. This is because my blog is in the startup stage and leaving it unupdated will cause loss in traffic.

I’ve just begun this blog so I’ll keep to my normal schedule of 3 or so posts per week. We don’t normally travel far over Christmas so that should be doable. If I’d been at it longer and had a lot of loyal readers though I’d probably take a week off as well!

I’ll be doing the exact same thing as you are… lighter posts – wrapping up the year – while I enjoy time with family and work on a different writing project.
I’ve found that traffic really drops off between Christmas and New Year’s so it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me to post a lot at this time. Recharging is more important to me as I start the new year!

I just started my personal finance blog on Dec. 1st of this year, and I was wondering what do during the holidays. In the end, I decided to stick with my Monday-Friday posting schedule. But since my blog is about money-life balance, I am going to have a series of posts this week that lean more toward the quality of life side of things in the hopes of putting people in the Christmas spirit.
Next week, I will look at thoughts on the 2009 economy and look ahead to 2010. Thanks for all of the great ideas here.

I also have that in mind. I think I’m going to have an advanced post. I would schedule that post on a certain date in between those breaks so I won’t be worrying about connecting to the internet on holiday. It can also be a surprise post for my readers. Enjoy the holiday!

As our readers, that take time off, bloggers shouldn´t be different, we deserve it after all, don´t we?
Anyway, new posts on my blog will stop for the holidays, but the background work will continue, i need to finish a refreshment of the template and try to finish an ebook, for the first anniversary of my blog in the end of January.
Guess we can never stop messing around with our blogs. :-)
Merry Christmas for you Darren, and enjoy your time off with your family.

“take a break from blogging for a whole week.” I encouraged everybody at TheBloggersBulletin.com to do that for the recent Thanksgiving holiday a month ago. I said I’d do most of the writing for that time period. It’s a long story, but the strange thing was that this maneuver caused a kind of delayed backfire — after the holiday was past, certain dynamics emerged that led us to institute a far more regimented schedule.

I’ll be stockpiling and scheduling a few posts – I notice traffic dip anyway over the holidays(assuming people are not home or spending time with family). I think depending on your niche you can get away with not having to post constantly, and I think most people recognize and respect the fact that everyone deserves some time off. If you’re a news niche or a site that people really depend on for constant information then I don’t really think you have a choice, for everyone else I think just leaving a few posts(especially if you rely on your blog for income) is a smart idea.

I don’t think many people will be reading, so I’ve decided to take a break between Christmas and New Years. If I have the time and inclination to write, I’ll save the posts for 2010.

I am going to continue with my routine, posting posts every 2-3 days.
Before New Year I am going to post about the ebooks I found most helpful to me in my beginner journeys at this whole online business.
I don’t know how is the traffic over Christmas and New Year, but I guess I will have less visits, because everyone will be celebrating somewhere.
But, I can find time to spend 2-3 hours a day in front of screen, at least.

I’ll be blogging as news comes up, but there is an anticipation that there won’t be much news between now and New Year’s. I also tend to do a lot of “Klassic” posts, to fill space and keep the community engaged. Another thing I tend to do during traditionally slow times is to post polls and create posts that specifically ask questions and encourage feedback.

I started a short series of Christmas posts, featuring links to great holiday stuff online.
On Christmas day itself I am considering doing my 1st video post. I know my toddler will do a little “happy dance” when she sees her gifts under the tree.
I am thinking about doing a prayer post on Thursday, for kids fighting cancer and other life threatening diseases. It would be universal (not affiliated with any particular religion).

Given this is the first year of our blog we’re carrying on as usual. Given we post a blog and a vlog every week it has meant getting ahead on the vlogs so that we have a few in the bank ready to go on the appropriate day.
It will be fascinating ot see how we go over the Christmas break given in Australia most of the country goes to the beach for the month of January!!

I will be posting mostly pictures during Christmas. This is more important than writing anything because it’s more fun seeing the cats antics during Christmas than reading about them, of course.
I don’t think I’ll be taking a break from blogging since we’re staying home for the holidays. Besides, if I take a break, it’s too difficult for me to get caught up. I’ve done this before and paid for it.

Good question – I’ve been mulling that one over. A week for me means a loss in audience, but if my audience is home for the holidays, it’s going to be lighter traffic anyway.
Plus it’s a busy season even without blogging – might end up stockpiling a few, and doing an end-of-the-year post, if I have time.

Good for you Darren,
Enjoy the time with your family. That is most important and where your support stems.
Personally I will be doing the same however I will have a few light post pre-planned to launch while I am spending time with the family.
I think for me it would be a bit ugly if I spent time at the PC blogging, lol! Our families support us throughout the year when we are blogging, social marketing and you name it. I think giving them the a big thanks by spending the holidays is the least we can do. After family will always be with you.
Enjoy the holidays! :)

I’m taking annual leave from my blog!! I think it’s important to put boundaries in place with any kind of work. As a parenting blogger in particular I recognise that my kids deserve some time where my right hand ISN’T on the scratchpad while the left hand is in playdough!

I’m more or less putting it on hold, I will probably not be posting anything between Christmas Eve and a couple of days into January. That’s due to a combination of factors – one being that in order to truly enjoy the holidays, I have to actively prevent myself from blogging and being on the internetz.
The other and very large factor is that my niche seems to have dried up quite a bit, with general activity being much lower than usual. All in all, it looks like a good set of reasons to kick back and think about the next step rather than writing away as if it was still October :)
Happy Christmas!

I usually write couple of posts at one week before the holiday, and then set the publish schedule for them along the holiday, so I don’t need to worry if my blog will be empty for a week and I can take rest for while.

Darren,
I will actually be working very hard on my blog to work out all the little things that I have been needing to get done and then write posts. Need to finish the year and month out strong.
Additionally, I am getting together a contest and a draft of an ebook.
Yes, I will be busy but I love it!
Best Regards,
Derek

Since this is my first blogging holiday I have been pondering that question myself. I’m actually finding it more difficult to get motivated to write right now.
So I’ll probably try and keep writing to better my discipline but keep the posts short and lite. Either way, I’ll be spending a great deal of time freshening up my lifestyle design blog in order to make it more applicable to my readers.
Happy Holidays everyone…

I plan on writing at least one to two posts during the holidays. I have devoted so much time in my blog about Holiday Organization, I would be surprised if something doesn’t come up that I don’t want to talk about!

Anyway, Marry Christmas everybody!

Well, I haven’t been blogging for very long (I just hit 50 posts, only been doing it since November) but I automate the actual posting of articles by setting them up to post at a predetermined time without my having to do it manually. Scheduling posts takes a lot of the worries about consistency out of the equation.

I will be….
- Blogging as usual but perhaps at different times of the day so I can also enjoy the holidays.
- Working on SEO to overcome the damage that Google has single-handedly done.
- Networking with other bloggers to trade regular blogging posts we all seem to be doing and help lighten the work load and in turn increase SEO/PR.
- Stripping off the old and implementing the new ads for after Christmas.
A blogger’s work is never done. The only difference in owning this type of business and a brick & mortar business is that you don’t have to sweep the floor. You just run a scan to carry out the garbage.
Merry Christmas to all! Please hit the pause button on your blog for a few hours to celebrate the reason for the season.

I am planning on posting until Christmas, when on the 26th I am heading out on the road until New Year’s. I definitely have two major posts planned out, one to wrap up what I’ve done in 2009, and the other to outline what I have planned for 2010. Since I’m working towards a two month trip to the Philippines, I’ve got a lot to work on.
Hopefully having to take a few days off from blogging won’t hurt my growth since I’m pretty new to the blogging world.

I work on all of my blogs and sites, because clients aren’t wondering why I haven’t gotten their work done!

I will be taking a short break from my blog and at the same time, to keep up with things, brainstorming any ideas I have come to me about improving my blog and business and so fourth. After the holidays, putting those ideas to use and see where I go!

I will be taking a short break and brainstorming ideas for the future of my blog. When the holidays are over I’ll put those ideas to work and see where things go from there.

I would really like to take a break, and use the time to spend with family and to brainstorm new ideas for my blog. Since it’s so new, reflecting seems a bit premature, and I’m not sure what a “writing on lighter topics” really means…however, I think if I really want to keep momentum and continually growing…I will need to put in the work, even over the holidays.
Happy holidays everyone!

I write some articles before I relax in holidays and let them post automaticly with WordPress. I make a schedule where every day a post is published, except saturday and sunday.

My guess is that my traffic will be lower over the holidays and folks have other things to do then read reviews about stadiums. That being said, I hope to be active every single day during the holdiays, and hope that that activity helps to gain an advantage and even a surge in visits, if not immediately, then after the first of the year.
I’m also going to spend some time reflecting on the year, and expressing my gratitude to those individuals who have helped me go from concept to fledgling blog in the past 4 months.
The hard part will be escaping from family time to get some time in on the site, and it may mean some late nights after everyone goes to bed, but hey, maybe I’ll get to see Santa Claus pop down the chimney…

I will be spending some time developing a blog strategy for 2010. The 4th quarter of ‘09 featured a new job, relocating to a new city, traveling home on weekends get the house market-ready… but not much blogging. It’s a great time for some resolutions!

I usually write a blt more and schedule in advance, since most are evergreen and hardly matter whether I post now or a year later.

I find myself having less time than usual so I’ve been posting a bit less but I’ve also been working on a special search engine that I’m going to post on Christmas day as a present for my readers.

Since I run a US Politics Blog, my Blog goes light when Congress goes home. In that time, i wil update my Bliogroll, and possibly meet a Blogger visiting my hometown during New years.
In the meantime, I am setting up a Blogger meetup for March tied to a Political fundraiser (I am a partisan in real time) — Bloggers as press for the event.
Otherwise, the grinch for Christmas and Dr. Who posts as well. And maybe some philisophical questions to end the New year.
When Congress gets back, so do I.
