ProBlogger Readable on Mobiles

One of the most requested featured by readers here at ProBlogger has been for the option to view this site more easily on a mobile device (at least some).

In the last few days we’ve added the WPtouch plugin to both ProBlogger and DPS.

I hope that this will enable a faster and easier to navigate user experience for readers on their iPhones and other mobile devices.

Of course if you’d prefer to view the site as normal you just need to scroll to the bottom of the page and flip the switch there back to the normal view.

Do let me know how the experience is viewing ProBlogger this way on your mobile.

Also – have you optimized your blog for mobile viewing? If so how did you do it?

  1. It’s something I hadn’t even looked into until I got a new phone that was Internet ready a few months ago. I always wondered how…..I should have guessed it was a WP plugin….duh! me. I tend to check my reader more when I’m out and about or on my mobile than go to new sites for this reason. Glad now I can come to yours :)

  2. Cool! I didn’t know a plugin could make a site better for mobile phones etc… I thought it was something much more complicated.. .this is helpful for those who want to do it to their own sites!

Thanks for sharing, I’m going to go check it out right now!

  3. Good stuff, my friend. Like a lot of people, I tend to overlook mobile. It doesn’t help that so many smartphones actually make the blog look normal. :) But, it sure is easy to read when all the extra visual stuff is removed for the phone.

  4. Really nice dude, I was always waiting to see my favourite blogs on my cell phone, hope i can comment and post links too.

  5. Thats nice. But Damn my GPRS is not working for few days.

  6. Looks good on the iPhone Darren! I am currently using ‘Carrington Mobile’. But I’m now thinking about switching to WPtouch now.
    Thanks

  7. I thought about it but I will wait for more readers :)

  8. That’s really cool, thanks a lot. It’s so annoying to not be able to read a lot of blogs. I’m glad that your’s isn’t one of them anymore!

Also, I haven’t done it yet, because my blog is just starting and have no subscribers as of yet.

  9. I’m sitting here with my old Nokia that can barely fit a few lines of text. I like the simplicity. I guess I’ll have to jump on the bandwagon and buy an iPhone soon. Meh, maybe in a few years? ;)

  10. WOW! looks great.
    Nice plugin, Thanks :)

  11. Looks great, but I don’t like use mobile to read websites.

  12. Anyone who wants to see it on their Firefox browser can just use the plug in named USER AGENT SWITCHER and change your user agent to iphone 3.0 and open the site :)

  13. I just installed it on my blog and looks really good for my blog. I was thinking about what plugin to go for the mobile phones but wasn’t sure so thanks Darren. Also your site renders fine. Thanks Greg Ellison

  14. We are moving ahead and these kind of things should be our milestone.

Congratulation Darren … but don’t you think that we achieved this bit late compare to others.

  15. I am using the same plugin and it seems to work great.

  16. Okay, that’s really cool! Will you go into any more depth on how you accomplished this? Thanks!

  17. I use the same plugin you did and have loved it. Wish more sites would follow suit.

  18. I just installed this on my 2.9 WordPress install (only compatible to 2.8.6) and so far it works great. I have a BlackBerry Storm and it looks amazing. Thanks again for helping out the blogging community.

  19. Great feature! I will be reading your post’s while I am on the go!

  20. I guess my question would be how it works on “non” touch phones, I use a Blackberry Curve which is why I chose viewMobile plugin for WordPress because it seemed to work with most all smartphones.

  21. Didn’t know such a thing existed but I easily installed this plugin this morning and it looks great! I don’t have an iphone and my Android phone is currently unaccessible but I tested using Safari with the iphone user agent.

  23. Really like the interface although for some reason I couldn’t post a comment from my iPhone. Can browse fine so don’t think it was a connection issue my end. Hey ho looks pretty cool anyway so I will try it out on our fitness blog.

  24. I’ve been wanting to do that for a while on my blog but I didn’t know of a plugin that would make it possible. Your post today informed me and now I’ve set mine up to use this plugin as well. Thanks.

The best part was that it literally only took a couple of minutes to set it up from start to finish and it’s supported by WP Super Cache which I use. This is all around a great plugin.

  25. That’s really cool! I am using Mobify and it seems to work great.

  26. I am presently viewing your blog from my Nokia 6630. I was surprised about the mobile optimisation when I saw it yesterday for the first time.
It all working good / looking good through Nokia 6630.
Now I am happy, Problogger loads faster.
But the comment section is bit confusing.
You can put the label “submit” instead of “publish” on the button.
And the “Notify me of further comments through email” comes immediatly above the actual comment field, and I got confused over what I should fill in the box below!
And I liked “skip to comment section” at the top – its a good idea.

  27. I have had this installed on my site from day dot, it’s fantastic and with virtually everyone having a smart phone these days you are making sure your readers can visit your site when they are on their dinner break!

    Good post

  28. I guess I should have been much more vocal about this plug in back when I wrote about it in February and used this blog as an example of one that was not using WP touch. Glad to see you using this great plug in for mobile devices. WP touch works great not only on the iPod or iPhone but also on Blackberries and the Motorola Droid. It is a very good plug in that allows for fast loading content.

  29. what a nice innovation. I wish i could implement something like it someday!

  30. Darren,

Thanks so much for the lead on the iPhone app. It works awesome!!!!

I’m so excited about this and can’t wait to share it with all my readers. Ha!!! They probably already know from your blog though.

    Great stuff… Thanks

  31. Even I’m using the same plugin ..Make sure you configure the Super cache plugin else… wp touch wont be able to server mobile pages all the time….

  32. Doesn’t recognize the kindle :(

I love that you have the blog available for kindle subscriptions though! I try to *work* when I’m online so I rarely read your blog. Since I read on the kindle though, I’m able to keep up much better and am really enjoying it :)

  33. I don’t think My post from the Kindle Made it. Just wanted to say thanks for Making this blog available for Kindle Subscriptions. I didn’t read it much online because I’m usually in Work mode With the browser, but I read on The kindle and its great to have this there.

(Sorry for the strangeness with caps. I’m playing with New pen software on my tablet.) BtW, the mobile plugin didn’t seem to recognize the kindle as a Mobile device.

  34. Great but not good for me because I don’t have GPRS enabled handset. As soon as I get that it will of great use to me.

  35. It’s a great little app – I installed it on my site a while ago. It’s just a shame it’s not very customisable.

  36. I like it! Just added to my blogs and love the look on my iPhone. Thanks for sharing.

  37. You should do this earlier.Nice change.

  38. Thanks for this post Darren and the blog looks great when viewed using the iPhone. I have just implemented the WPTouch plugin on my blog and have been really impressed with how easy it is to setup.
Thanks for the post and for sharing this.
    Simon

  39. Hey Darren,

I implemented this cool little plugin a few days ago on SocialMediaExaminer.com (after learning about it indirectly via a Chris Brogan post).

One quick question. I see that you have little balls with what appears to the number of comments displayed near the dates on the main page.

Wondering how you did that? I have DISQUS comment system and perhaps that is the culprit.

    Any ideas?

    Mike

  40. Previously, I viewed your site just fine on my newly purchased DROID. I’m not fond of the new format, and have scrolled to the bottom 3 times to turn the switch “off” and it continually resets it back to “on”. Not sure if it is a glitch on my end or yours. Just thought it was worthy of a heads up!

  41. I honestly hadn’t thought about doing this! I only know two people with smartphones, since data plans are really, really expensive here in Canada, so most people don’t actually browse the web, even if they have a smartphone.
I’ve added this pugin, and one of my US friends says it works great on her DROID.
    Thanks for the tip, Darren!

  42. I am about to check that out and in the end I’ll end up liking that

  44. Very interesting read this is one of my major interest. I will be following this blog closely. I see you put a lot of thought into what you write.

  45. I am also using WPtouch on my blog and have already received a positive feedback from my readers. I intend to keep customing it so the user expirience can be improved.

  46. I had never heard of the WPTouch plugin…thanks for mentioning. I absolutely love WordPress and this will help me to reach more readers…thanks!

  47. Thanks, I may try this for my blog as well.

  48. I was wondering – does enabling your blog for mobile viewing create duplicate content issue? I.e. would search engines end up indexing your mobile version as well, thus creating a duplicate content issue – or this doesn’t happen? Just wondering… it’s probably a very stupid question :)

  49. I find myself reading alot of blogs on my iphone and learning about content and many other things. It makes me happy to know we as a society have moved this far in such little time.
