Yes! A Great Book for Bloggers

Posted By Darren Rowse 27th of October 2009 Video Posts 0 Comments

Over the last few days I’ve been digging into a great little book called Yes! 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive.

I’m only halfway through it but of the 25 or so chapters that I’ve read so far I have jotted down 50 or so ideas for my own blogs – both ideas for content, ideas for next time I try a promotion and just general ideas. You see being persuasive is something bloggers of all kinds could do well to be whether it is

  • persuading people to subscribe to your blog
  • persuading readers to take action on a post you’ve written
  • persuading readers to buy a product you have
  • persuading readers to buy an affiliate product you’re promoting
  • persuading another blog to link up to you
  • persuading a reader to pass on your content to their own network

Not everything in the book will apply to every blogger but there’s plenty in this book to draw on as you develop your blog.

  1. Darren,

Yes is a great book and if one is willing to think creatively there are many takeaways that could be implemented into one’s blogs or businesses. It is also a relatively fast read unless you end up taking pages of notes.

This book is on my “Reread” list as I think that each time you read it, you will gain some new insights to move forward.

    Thanks for sharing your insights!

  18. Hmm……….if a problogger can get new ideas from a book, then that is a book that should be recommended for newbies or novices.

  19. There’s a reason that the ancients elevated rhetoric above all other disciplines. Rhetoric was regarded as “the Science of Persuasion”. If you could speak well and persuasively to people then the world would be your oyster. Any student of history will be able to point to any number of times where the entire course of our civilization was altered by a few well-chosen words.

    It’s no less true now.

  20. Sounds like a good recommendation Darren. Have you read “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion” [ http://www.amazon.com/Influence-Psychology-Persuasion-Robert-Cialdini/dp/0688128165 ]? It’s a good resource on a similar topic.

  21. Darren,
I’m glad you see value in Yes! I’ve know Dr. Cialdini for many years and teach his persuasion techniques to managers and supervisors at my company. I can tell you and your audience from firsthand experience, when properly (and ethically) used the results are pretty amazing. Simple changes in communications can pay huge dividends.
