What are Your Favorite 10 Blogging Tools?
It’s time for a little discussion – lets talk blogging tools.
Over in the ProBlogger.com forum there’s been a lot of talk about different tools, applications, platforms and plugins that helps to improve blogs. I’m loving the different opinions and experiences and thought it’d be a good question to open up to the wider community – what are your favourite 10 blogging tools?
I suspect most of us will probably include our blogging platform (Blogspot, WordPress, TypePad etc) in the list somewhere but other than that anything goes. Perhaps it’s a comments tool, perhaps a desktop editor, perhaps a plugin or widget – anything goes!
But limit it to 10!

Two tools that I use are:
1. Creative Commons search
http://search.creativecommons.org/
With this I can quickly get images and video for my blog, most only needing attribution.
2. Google Docs
http://docs.google.com/
I was hesitant at first, but I love that I can copy and paste notes for future reference without ever closing my internet window.
Just another way to bring minimalism to blogging.

I use Scribefire with FireFox, the Dictionary dot com toolbar, and the addthis as an add on.
Personally I don’t like the desktop blogging tools. I like to use Firefox and utilize their different tabs to switch back and forth when I’m writing posts.

Here we go, based on free tools and heavy optimization with social networks:
1- Blogger (free customizable platform)
2- Windows Live Writer (free and excellent editor)
3- Facebook share button (Social integration)
4- Twitter share button (Social integration)
5- Google Friend Connect (Social integration)
6- Facebook Widget (Social integration)
7- Any widget that shows Twitter updates (Social integration)
8- The Gimp (Free image editor)
9- RSS and Email subscription (For easy following)
10- About me page (For more engaging with followers)
Just my quick thoughts…

First of course Askimet! Couldn’t sleep without it. “Search & Replace” is a quite useful plugin and does exactly what it says.
I also love the YARPP (Yet Another Related Posts Plugin), which shows very accurately related posts.
And though I have a self-hosted WP-Blog, I love the official Wordpress.com Stats plugin, because it is much simpler and easier than many other statistics plugins.

Wordpress has taken first place in my list. Within that, however, Sniplet takes the prize for its ability to inhale code and spit out results in posts and pages. Formbuilder, a WP plugin for managing forms, comes in second. I’m with R. Kneschke regarding Akismet. The rest of the toolbox is filled with my thesaurus, spellchecker and a decent dictionary.

2. Cyberlink YouCam free software to capture the video.
3. Screencast (not free – 9.95/mo) to store the videos.

Looking forward to learning from everyone!

I have to second Askimet, Search and Replace, and Wordpress Stats. All great tools. I would add ShareThis, Wp-Email Plugin, Wp-Database Backup, Clean Archives Reloaded, Alert bear for Rss if you want to comment early on a post, Tweetdeck and Photoshop (or GIMP). I think I might start using action outline too.

7. MindMapping – I use different mindmapping software online and offline. Google Wonder Wheel, FreeMind, Mind Meister and a couple other ones.

Let’s see:
Writing part of the blogging routine: Google Doc – I can access it everywhere. I don’t have to bring flash drive, laptop, etc. Google Reader – looking for inspiration, something that sparks off a new idea for a blog post and when I’m done, it’s time to type into search box of Google Reader again so I can have a list of related links for my post. I use Picnik for image editing. Any online dictionary to check spelling and grammar.
Plugins: I love Apture – can embed pics, videos, links, which provide readers with little a box showing the image of the url I’m linking to without ever leaving my page.
Promotion: FriendFeed, Twitter, Delicious. FriendFeed autopublish the link to my new post when I hit publish, which in turn gets sent to Facebook and Twitter. Of course, I still have Tweetmeme on my posts for readers who want to share the love.
Can I add coffee. I consume cups and cups of coffee? Helps me a lot when writing my blog posts. :)

Ok. So if we’re looking for actual tools, I’ll come short of 10 by a long shot. However, in the interest of keeping my blog going, someone could:
1 – use Disqus for comments, so you don’t lose anything on any of the sites you either run, or comment on.
- troll the wordpress codex weekly looking for new toys to play with, be they themes to hack or plugins t try.
2 – write everything, whether it’s worth posting or not. Set it on a delay if you have to, if you’re not sure it’s worth having said, but write it down anyway, just in case.
3 – read lots of blogs on lots of subjects, and pay attention to trending feels; sometimes a marketing blog anda design blog will say the same thing within hours, even when the authors don’t know each other.
4 – use a reader, like Google Reader to keep new posts popping up as they’re released. This also helps when looking for trends.
5 – use Google Alerts if you’re planning a farther reaching series of posts. If you get good at it, you can ride the wave and pick excellent times to release your comments.
6 – Tumbl. Whether it’s through tumblr or through your own site. I built a Tumblelog function into my WordPress theme for this. Tumbling keeps content flowing, and means if someone said it well enough, you can just toss people through to them, rather than expending extra energy rewriting it yourself.
7 – keep reading offline too. Pick up a good book every so often, fiction or non-fiction, and read it critically to pick up on the author’s voice as well as the story they tell. This will help your writing, which will help your blogging.
8 – get a pen pal or two, keep up with people. When you’re conversing in long-letter format, your skills go up as well. Twitter might force you to get better with your words, but there’s no substitute for cohesive, directing writing.
9 – red ProBlogger. Do I get brownie points now?
10 – keep YOUR own voice. Above all else.Sometimes it takes years to develop a writing voice, but readers can recognize when a post is forced, or when you’re playing copycat. Write like yourself and you’ll enjoy writing more, and keep blogging longer. If you’re not writing your own words it becomes a chore, and chores have a habit of getting the lowest spot on the priority list.
There we have it. At least, that’s my list. I know it’s not as snazzy as using Posterous or Delicious for notes and employing time-management tools. But trust me, if you remind yourself consciously of even three of these things every post you make, writing as a process will become (if it’s not already) one of your favorite things.

Tony,
Wordpress self-hosted is Wordpress.org. You host a Wordpress blog on your domain and pay for the domain registration and hosting fees.
So, your blog address would be http://www.yourdomain.com versus http://www.yourdomain.wordpress.com.
I hope that helps!

I am new to blogging, so I only have two tools to share. My favorite two tools are Digsby and My Share the Love Widget. Digsby isn’t really a blogging tool, but it helps my blog just the same. It is a sort of instant messenger program that combines a lot of services, but the best for my blog is a pingbox widget. I put this on my blog, and whenever I am online, my blog visitors can talk to me instantly. Also, which is why I like it better than the Yahoo Pingbox, it gives me the ip address of the visitor that I can click on, and find out where the person is in the world.
I also like my “Share the Love” widget. It is really the same as the “Sharing is Sexy” widget you see on many blogs, just with a title line. It has a button for almost every social bookmarking site, so if people want to share what I have written, they can do so right at the bottom of my posts.

Here are five that I feel are especially valuable:
WordPress
“WP-SpamFree” plugin (totally eliminates spam comments from showing up. You never need to deal with them.
“DarkRoom” plain text writing program (green text with no formatting on a black background). Very conducive to focused writing. I’ve switched now to “TextRoom” as I have switched OS to Linux Ubuntu.
“FreeMind” mind-mapping software for brainstorming.

Thanks Darren for another great idea to help us become better. Most of the plugins I use are repats of what is already listed so I won’t repeat.
I tried Datafeedr Random Ads V2 which allows you to simply and easily show random ads anywhere in your template files or using widgets. I use it to rotate banners and such.
Question: Can you have too many plugins on a blog and cause it to slow down to a crawl or worse? Are there some known ones you should avoid because it slows down your blog?

I have only one favorite tool–blog stats on my wordpress blog. I learn something amost every day from it.
I learn what my readers like and don’t like from the top post lists for the way, week, month, and all time. I learn who referred people to my blog, and I go visit them and often have established wonderful relationships with like-minded people that way. I learn through the search terms people use to get to me what blog tags work the best. I learn what links they click on within my posts. From the graph of page views, I learn that my blog is steadily growing.
Well, I do have another favorite tool. It’s ProBlogger and my blogging guide, god, and guru, Darren Rowse. I follow a great many of your suggestions, and they really work. The one suggestion that has worked wonders came from a post about linking back to related articles on my blog. I began creating a separate wordprocessing file with all the links related to recurring topics.
I went back and adding the lists about a particular topic to all related posts from the beginning to now and I consistently add them to each new post. A bit of work to mainstain, yes, but my stats went through the roof!! Each time I add the related links to a new article, the page views on the related old ones get a bump.
thank you, Darren, for all you do for us. I’m intermittently reading a page or two from your blogging for dollars book. Donna
