A couple of weeks back I introduced a brainstorming exercise that gets bloggers to think about how to expand their blog. I followed that post up with an exploration of adding a forum to a blog as one good way to expand your blog.

Today In this video I continue this exploration of how to expand a blog by looking at adding a book to a blog. In it we look at the example of PostSecret and their new book PostSecret: Confessions on Life, Death and God.

  1. Thank you Darren for sharing.

I heard from someone that our blog is like a book to be written. So our topics are actually the chapters of the book.

I too also dream of writing a physical book too. And it will be my goal in 5 years time.

  2. Darren the idea of adding a book to a blog is excellent and it’s also a soft way to make money from a blog.

I started reading/learning blogging tips/ideas on https://problogger.com for like 4 months before I started my http://www.nomoref.com/blogging so my main target is to turn every content/post on Nomoref into a book in the nearest future.

I write with the thought of turning the content into a book. It’s a strategy I apply, I know where my blog is going and where it started from.

    Thanks for the short presentation.

  3. What threshold would a blog need to reach in terms of readership to be ready to look at something like publishing a book?

  4. I am working on a book right now, and I am also starting a new site (I’ve been on wordpress for free). When I started writing the Elevator pitch (Thanks, Darren for the idea!) for my new site, it totally turned into a book idea, and I am already thinking of how the blog and book will complement each other. Dreams are nice :)
But I was thinking more of an ebook because I am very intimidated by the thought of trying to get published. Thanks for another timely and great post!

  5. I’ve always felt I could definitely write a book and considering some of the books I’ve read in the past…I’m beginning to realize just how right I am.

Don’t know which avenue I’d take as far as the topic: fiction, short stories, life experiences, my anecdotes..etc.

It is definitely something to think about.

  6. It will definitely be something to keep in the back of my mind, but maybe not for now, for either of my blogs. I agree with Casey in the question of how big a blog would need to be. I’d like to know that too!

I have been published before, several years ago, with a book that really doesn’t hit the audience of my blog. Life took a twist with me, so that topic doesn’t work anymore. But I know how the game works, so it would be nice to do that someday.

  7. Good thing it is. a Book can get you many readers from everywhere the book goes.

  8. Interesting idea, but I think there are a few snags.

Blogging is prett different from formal writing, most bloggers’ styles are to relaxed for formal printing.

Also, is material you use on your blog transferable to your book? Let’s be honest many blogs are not something a publisher would be interested in.

Casey (North and Clark) also raises a good point in readership levels. If people are reading what you are putting out for free, are who is going to pay to read it?

Not trying to be a wet blanket, just being real about the challanges most of us are facing.

  9. As Darren just explained, both he and the blogger behind Post Secret leveraged their readership and topics to strike deals with publishers.

Readers aren’t only interested in formal writing when they look for a book — they want voice … blogging really opened that possibility up.

I’m an avid reader here and I bought Darren’s 31DBBB and the Problogger book … it’s more about supporting the blogger and experiencing their latest work and in a different medium.

    It’s fun.

  10. So over videos.

  11. I think this is also a good strategy for building a blog.
I have been building my site with the intention of using the content in a finished product at some stage so it can be a great way to plan and map out how you will build your blog as well.
    Thanks Darren

  12. Why was my comment deleted?.

I noticed My Comment was awaiting moderation for hours, and later deleted. Its not a sperm comment.

    It is discouraging anyway.

  13. I’m definitely on board with this. I’m working right now to right a book and I hope to launch it early next year. Hopefully I can have it up and ready to publish within the next 6 months. That should also provide me with the necessary time to continue building my following which could translate into more sales potential.

  14. Dayo – your comment was just in moderation… not spam… or….uhmmmm….. sperm… :-)

  15. I love it, thanks for sharing those tidbits of knowledge. I have several blogs, but only one so far is lining itself up for an eventual book.

I hope that when that day comes, my readers will be willing to spare a few dollars to support me ;)

Thanks for the great advice as always

  16. You would need to have a pretty popular blog to be able to publish a hard cover book. It would be good to get to that stage one day.

  17. That’s an great idea and nice post..

But one question how can you add hard book to a blog as it is not an e-book.

Is hard-book is coming soon or it will take time.

    Thanks for sharing..

  18. Reading your blog while drinking a cup of coffee in the morning, thanks for sharing

  19. I think writing a book would be a normal next step after creating a successful blog. Then possibly a complete course consisting of a series of books?

  20. I’m announcing my 2nd book project tomorrow actually. Will be about Aus Blogging too. I am very excited :)

  21. Great a book about blogs, i need to read this soon!

  22. If you have a successful blog – writing atleast an ebook should be natural next step

  23. The internet is so ever-changing would a hard covered book really make sense? I know a lot of the so called Gurus write books, but none of them are ever worth the money.

I would like to flip your “how to” and see what your thoughts are on expanding your blog when you have already written a book. I work with many clients every day that want to expand their blog and many have already written books themselves. Now they want to engage in social media and blogging as a way to better connect with their readers/followers. How would you suggest transitioning a traditional readership audience into an online one?

  25. What about self-publishing? I have thought about taking my blog to book just using amazon print on demand to give it another dimension and to bring around to networking events and stuff to give away for free.

I don’t want to wait until I have a huge readership as I think it may help draw interest if I get a book out there sooner.

  26. This is really an amazing idea to adding a book on your blog. Then interesting thing is that a book can get you a bulk of readers from everywhere the book goes.Very nice post, thanks for sharing.

  27. That is my dream too. I need to improve the quality of my articles.

  28. Interesting. I’ve heard publishers are now shying away from any blog content for books. It’s great way to take your readership to the next level though if you can make it happen.

  29. This is interesting, thanks for the tips. Wondering if there is any difference in the appeal of a book vs. an e-book, self-published vs outside publisher. Also, latest trend seems to be tweeting books 140 characters at a time. A bit gimmicky unless done right, in my view.
PS Liking the split screen, curious what software enables you to do this?

  30. I think it is an interesting idea and I like the fact you are thinking dimensional about blogging and how to build on it and I can see how it would work for some people I think my only concern would be don’t you have to invest a lot of money in producing a book, and I always think about the author of Harry Potter and how it took her 9 publishers before she found someone that took her seriously whereas I think it is easier to write a blog and gain loyal readership. It is a nice idea that could be another revenue stream and make money for someone to get into but I think you need to research it and from the advice you have given there is definitely something that people can take from it.

  31. This is really an interesting review. It seems that it gives ideas with regards on what is the effective thing in order to expand blogs. Its really nice to know on how to add e-books in the web which can be more useful and easier to access by readers.

  32. If not for the Fun and Ideas I gain through visiting your blog, it could be my last visit here.

I have an idea of a good post that I would like you “Darren” to write about: The title is “How To Protect Your Valuable Readers By Spell Checking Their Comments Instead Of Humiliating Them”

    e.g.
I write this in Problogger – (Why was my comment deleted?.I noticed My Comment was awaiting moderation for hours, and later deleted. Its not a sperm comment. It is discouraging anyway)

And Darren replied with this – (Dayo – your comment was just in moderation… not spam… or….uhmmmm….. sperm… :-) )

He is a Genius, he could atleast correct the word “sperm” cause he knew I was disappointed when I was writing the comment and was not even checking.

  33. Nice blog with remarkable tips thanks for sharing it I’ll visit your site soon Good stuff here. Will definitely be useful for me.. Keep it up :)

  34. Thank you Darren for sharing.

I heard from anyone that our blog is like a book to be written. So our capacity are in fact the capacity of the book.

I too aswell dream of autograph a concrete book too. And it will be my ambition in 5 years time.

  35. Just to let you know that I have published two books that flowed from my blog … I posted many articles on a particular topic, and the response was so good that I decided to publish the books.

    See: http://www.e4africa.co.za/?p=1326 and
http://www.e4africa.co.za/?page_id=117 Both books are available in their entirety on the web as well.

  36. Wow, hope we could come up with that kind of book too, who knows right? maybe someday.. soon. Nice challenge there Darren.

  37. Invaluable video Darren. As I evolve as a blogger I see how important the concept of expansion is. It’s the constant tweaking and growing which piques interest and drives traffic.

    Thanks for sharing

  38. Adding book to blog can help for increasing blog traffic. For increase blog traffic we should add so many resource on our blog, this also help us for getting returning visitor.

  40. I never thought about writing a book based upon my blog’s content.

If anything, this idea helps to focus my posts so that writing a book would some day be feasible.

    Thanks for Sharin’ Darren.

  41. I appreciate your posting- I have typed out info snippets for clients and their families- and often hand out this info when I do public speaking- Maybe I would be better served to turn some of this into a book?
I am fairly new to blogging but can see the need to expand and think differently each week

  42. Geez I love these videos, Darren! When I’ve read myself to a standstill and my brain is about to explode, your ace content slides down like two-fruits in jelly. With a much higher value add, of course. Many thanks. P. :)

  43. I have plan for that, but im still focusing for my dayjob :(

  44. Thanks
highly illustrative, i never thought about it

  45. Lately I have use one tips for getting more traffic and more comment on my blog by making my blog dofollow, I was not aware about it before, but this is really working good.

  46. Hi, Darren

Good Post and sharing. Recently i added a free ebook in my blog. I never thought can adding a book to a blog.

    Anyway thanks for the tip.

    Martin L.

  47. publishing a hardcover book is one of my goal, but i should start first with ebooks ;)

  48. Great advice. For those that intend to write a book from the beginning, it’s easier to blog your way to writing a book. I just finished writing my book and it consumed me. Believe me, the next one will come from consistent blogging.

  49. I really like the idea. While having to kill a few hours on a recent vacation I found myself in Barnes and Noble for an extended period. I went through the social media isle, or should I say shelf. Most of the offerings were good, for beginners. I think there is a group out there who would love to see something more technical and more strategic in nature with specific techniques to use. Social media is really a hodge podge of many applications that need to be orchestrated to work as a finely tuned sonata not just one specific topic such as Twitter or Facebook. It’s my guess we will be seeing some of those soon. Maybe even from some of your readers.

    Thanks for the post, Darren.
