Why Did You Start Blogging?

Reader Questions 266 comments

In the last post on ProBlogger Kevin talked about starting a blog based upon one of your hobbies as a great way to start blogging.

As I mentioned in the introduction to that post – Kevin had really described much of my own motivations for starting my photography blog (and that of many many other successful blogs). While I did see an opportunity for profit in that blog when I started it – my main motivation for kicking it off was to share what I was learning about photography and to see if I could draw others with a similar interest together to learn from one another.

For me I always wanted to see if I could make some money from that blog – but early on it wasn’t the biggest motivation. Over the years as the blog has grown and become more profitable I suspect my motivations have changed a little – I’m still interested in the topic – but it’s certainly more of a focus to make it profitable.

Of course starting a blog on a topic you’re interested in or passionate about is not the only way – many successful bloggers have started blogs with other motivations – including to make money, to grow their profile, to drive traffic to their business etc…. (or some combination of motivations).

Why Did You Start Blogging?

Yesterdays post has got me thinking – why DO people start blogs? Has the motivation changed from a few years back when blogs first began to get popular (when I started 7 years ago most people seemed to be doing it purely for fun and to make connections)?

I’d be interested to hear about your initial motivations to starting a blog? Did you start on a topic you were interested in? Did you start with the idea of making money? Was there some other motivation/s? Also – have your motivations changed since starting your blog?

Interested to hear your thoughts!

  • I started blogging to expose my views of technology to the world.

  • Haha, that was true for me too when I first started my seminar review blog.

I only had the idea to share what I learn from my seminar company (Success Resources), but when I found out that actually a lot of people are searching for the seminars or speakers, I change my approve.

    I have not stop since.

It’s very fun to share what I learn from the speakers.

  • I started blogging, 3 years ago, while I was still working for a corporate company. My plan was to make ‘blogging’ a way of making a bit of income on the side and eventually give up the 9-5.

I started off in the personal development with a strong bias towards management, arena. That was my knowledge and expertise.

Four months ago, I gave up the corporate world and now ‘blogging’ and my on-line business is my sole income.

I still run the same personal development blog and have since branched out to share my experiences of blogging and help others build theirs.

  • I started on my website tips blog is to remind myself and at the same time sharing what I know.

As there are a lot of people who wanted to start their business online, but do not know what to do when it comes to website or blog.

That is where I come in.

  • I started blogging for three very distinct reasons:

First, to add another voice and facilitate more discussion about the future of the music industry.

Second, to learn as much as possible and share what I have learnt.

And finally, to establish myself as a thought leader/futurist in the field.

  • I started blogging to build a tribe. As a classical guitarist, I have very little hope of becoming the “best in the world” as a performer. Which is okay. But I can certainly be better at all of my colleagues with marketing and networking.

I also think it’s important for someone that’s probably going to pursue a career in academia to connect with a larger community. That’s a powerful tool: lots of potential for recruiting really great students. Also, while tenure boards may not see the value in self-publishing right now, they will come around in the future.

  • I started blogging because I loved talking about and keeping track of the great deals I was getting. It was a fun way to share.

  • I started blogging to make money. I am mostly self-taught and one of the techniques I learned was that blogs are great ways of making money. “Just start a blog and you will rank well in the search engines” etc.

Ah the the optimisim of ignorance. Naturally I didn’t take long to find out that particular piece of information is misleading. It’s one of many steps, and still one of the reasons I help people today.

  • I started blogging to share what I know about technology. I am not a geek in any manner, but I am just interested in reading technology related news. I simplify what I read and make it easy for laymen to understand after reading my view point.

  • For example I started http://www.freshome.com because I wanted to gather inspiration for a future home that I want to buy. I wasn’t sure how that home will look like, and that’s why I’ve started to search for inspiration, and post everything I liked on this blog. :)

  • I started my blog to allow the visitors to post and share their goals as I think my visitors are more important than me.

  • I was a very very lazy student and was always getting the least grades in the class, so I needed some motivation/inspiration to make me study more and increase my grades.

I searched all over the internet but found nothing good enough to motivate me to study more harder and smarter, so I decided to start a journal and write down my ups and downs and how how I can overcome them, I thought it would be lovely to have a website for it so I started to search for a website template that would make it easier for me to write and publish, I searched on google and got to one website that offers vast templates so I wrote a letter to the admin and asked him if they have any template suitable for just writing and posting so as to be able to share my thought online to other lazy students that would love to know how I overcame my laziness and got to the top within 1 year.

That website admin knew what I needed, and he introduced me to blogging and few blog platforms, I went ahead and searched for a free platform and better platform, and there it was “WordPress”.

That’s how it all started, I knew nothing much about online stuffs few years ago but I can tell you I am fully charged now.

  • To fulfill a desire to engage, communicate and share.

  • Well, being the most interesting man in the world and all, people wanted to read about my impressive life and ways and of course I couldn’t say no to my beloved fans.

But really it’s to get some fame, glory, help some people, make some money, and just get my thoughts out to the world and hopefully help me sell anything in the future.

  • I started blogging for two reasons. First to get my photography skills ‘out there’ and get more well known. Also, to keep in touch with other photographers and get advice from them. Since starting last week, I’ve grown a nice little following as well as over 300 fans on facebook and several job offerings. So far my blog has been a real asset to my photography business.

  • I too Started this blog, to let people know what is the exact way of blogging.
I have spent more than two years. and I know that whats works what not and what can kill your blog.
Problogger.Net has been great medium for learning.

  • It was pretty much just curiosity with me. After I found out what exactly a blog was and the potential it could have I wondered why I was even attending college if this was out there. So I guess the motivation started out with money but at the same time successful bloggers I learned from advised to blog about something you’re passionate about or else consistent content would be a problem. So I started a free blog on blogger then i moved to wordpress and here I am. So at first it was just curiosity to see if I could really make any money talking about something I was interested in.

  • I started blogging just July this year. i am doing this only for Earning.

  • I started blogging because I wanted writing about my experience and others things which i wanted to share with people.

    P. S. Corry for my english. I am from Russia.
    Hi from Sankt-Peterburg.

  • Hi Darren,

Well, although I’ve been keeping an eye on blogs for a few years, it’s just now that I’ll be kicking off two blogs (a WordPress focused blog and another one on email marketing).

    My reasons are:

    1. For the WordPress one: mainly for making money while sharing WordPress themes and techniques I come across

    2. Email marketing: I’ve been in this field for 3 years now, and it’s one of my passions. Of course I’ll try and monetize it, but that’s not the main focus here. I just want to share what I’ve learned in 3 years, keep an online archive of my knowledge and also prepare the road for my biggest dream: an email marketing agency.

    Best wishes,
    Cosmin.

  • Just started July of this year. I love leadership and teaching. I find it a venue to establish a platform, build a network and teach. I’m still learning a lot and feel overwhelmed at times. Your site has a been a tremendous help and I’m going through your book (31 days…) right now.

  • I started blogging when I saw Shoemoney’s adsense check a few years back and I knew at that time that there are money to be made on the internet.

It kinda inspired mr to start blogging..lol

    Thanks Jeremy !

  • I started blogging, 3 months ago with the home to make money but now I am blogging for fun.

  • The first blog (that I can remember any ways) was to keep in contact with clients and others in the holistic field. It was my what’s new page.

I blog on different sites for various reasons. Here’s two:

My Opinionated Ant blog is a bit helter skelter and I do it to amuse myself and my imaginary mutant ant who was born out of a lack of sleep. On nights I’m working and extraordinarily tired I still write out Eliza Leigh stories to stay alert and amused.

Another one which I just started is to track my first NaNoWriMo experience and later all things books.

Interested to see what others reasons are.

  • Maybe I’m one of the few, but I started blogging for fun. A lot of my friends had personal blogs, but I didn’t feel like writing about me, so I thought I’d write about books: what I read, what I want to read. Reading is my major hobby, and I’ve had fun blogging about it.

  • I started blogging just over 2 years ago, spurred by other blogs in my chosen niche, World of Warcraft. My desire to blog was fueled by my enjoyment of writing, and to share with others.

Since then, my focus has shifted away from the game world and more towards the personal, with an emphasis on technology. While I am an Amazon Associate, I’ve only just started that venture; I’m financially secure in retirement, so making money from blogging is not an objective (not that I’m opposed, of course!).

I’m still searching for my “niche” – as somewhat of a perfectionist, but one who is easily distracted, my biggest issue right now is staying focused on one area, and doing it justice.

  • I’ve been blogging for 3 months because I like the topic about Home Business (Make Money Online). I ever did a mistake by believing some scam websites and lost some money. So I decided to do nothing and don’t believe in Home Business. However I found that some people can make money online by blogging so I change my mind to do it until now.

  • I started blogging to answer questions! As a mom of se7en smallish kids I get heaps of questions wherever we go… and I wanted to say: “Read my blog” rather than taking ten hours to run every errand! I kept putting off beginning because I thought it would be so hard to be perfect!!! Turns out you just have to be yourself! After getting over the first post hurdle I haven’t looked back and just love it everyday… I have hardly ever said “read my blog” to anyone but quite a lot of folk stop us and say “We read your blog!” It’s a mad mad world we live in!

  • My first blog (KuyaKevin.com) was started as a way to connect with students I was meeting–I wanted to offer devotional thoughts, etc to people I may not be able to see again personally.

  • That’s a good reason to start blogging!

I started blogging because i wanted to share my knowledge with the world!

  • I started blogging because it was recommended by a business network that I belong to. When I started 3 years ago, I had no guidance and blogged about kids, food, coffee, faith and my products. THEN I read your book four months ago, changed my blog and watched my sales skyrocket! I get 41% of my business from my blog thanks to reading your book and implementing the ideas. I started a second blog for Bible Study, and in 6 weeks that blog had 10,000 readers. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Blogging was the best decision I ever made…once I learned how to do it effectively!

    Old Blog: http://www.lifeversejewelry.blogspot.com
    New Blog: http://lifeverseblog.com
    Bible Study: http://womensbiblestudy.com

Thanks for inspiring me, with Gratitude- Christine

  • I kicked off my blog as a passion project. About a year ago I took a break from my work as an entertainment reporter and critic to attend grad school. During that time I started feeling the need to write entertainment opinion pieces again. Hence, SofaSnark.com.

  • I started blogging as a method of building websites nearly 5 years ago. I have done both free and self hosted, wordpress, blog.com, and blogger.com platforms.
Blogs that have a focus seem to be a lot easier to do than blogs that have very wide berth. My current blog were I am focusing most of my energy is in the travel niche, and does seem to be progressing much better than my Online marketing blog.

  • Correction:

    http://womensbiblecafe.com

  • I initially started aphotoassistant.com to market my business, but quickly realized that I could create a community around the blog for others to participate in and share their experience, just as Darren pointed out. Any other blog I found specifically on photo assisting seemed to have been left for dead on the roadside, with few posts made consistently and lacking much personality. It is hard to stay on top of it, but the more I focus on it the easier it gets. Now, I have found other topics to start blogging on and see more possibilities to generate more interest and perhaps advertising dollars. We’ll see….

  • Now maximum COMMON people starts blog as to earn money and celebrity starts blogging to tell their fan what they have ate on lunch and what they are going to eat in dinner.

So basically this is for three purpose –

    Money
    Express yourself
    Update your fans

  • I started my blog (a month + old) in hope i can someday escape 9-5. But overtime, which is also very recent, i start to really enjoy sharing my thoughts on the subject of personal development, the topic in which I’m blogging about.

I picked the niche because i am comfortable with the subject. i have interest in it since a very young age. And i’m a sort of nonconformist, which makes it even more interesting for me to write.

And i absolutely love the feeling of being an entrepreneur. Blogging gave me that feeling even though I’m not making any money yet.

  • One of the reson to start my blog is inspirations i got from reading your blog. An my zeal to start something on my own.

    :)

  • I just checked out your photo blog and I think it is really well designed. Are the cameras linked to your Amazon affiliate?

  • Well I started because I am the type of person who likes sharing any information I have. It was not for money.

Blogging has helped me in my studies. I never used to take notes before. I now do because I publish some of my notes of my studies. Besides helping myself, it also helps others.

This provides me with a sense of satisfaction that no money can offer.

  • I started blogging when I found Active Rain and it was so easy. After hearing for 2 years “you should be blogging” I do it to make connections, reach a potentially unreachable audience, relay information and tory others know Bout me and my world. I wish I had started 5 years ago instead of 4.

  • Here’s my answer: To acknowledge the things I need to change or heal and to share my heart.

  • I started this blog mainly with the intent of showcasing the art of friends in groups I belonged to. I was also interested in how well a blog with very few words would do! (I’m not much of a writer.)

Its not intended primarily as a money making venture (which is just as well, since it isn’t) but it does from time to time result in sales for the artists whose work is shown

  • First, frustration. After an initial frustration with people in our topic area, we decided to make it better by starting a blog.

Second, our blog started out initially as an idea for a book. But the media landscape has changed, and the best format to get our ideas out there is blogging.

I’m an english major, have always dreamed of being a writer, and blogging opens the doors to that.

  • I started blogging to connect with folks across the web who share the same interests as me. (I don’t meet too many people in my small town that are as passionate about crafting as I am.) There’s also the ease of blogging at 3am, and the encouragement of getting a comment or email from a like-minded person on the web that keeps me inspired.

  • For everyone above (I think all but Alex Blackwell) that started with a goal and a purpose (make money, communicate with clients, help others, …) have you met your goals? Has your blog fulfilled your objective.

I started blogging before everyone was blogging for money. I started simply because I was depressed and wanted an outlet to vent. I didn’t care if anyone read it because it was for me. I reveled in the anonymity…until I got outed. At that point I was a magnet for oddities found on the Internet so I continued blogging personally but decided to post tidbits of funny or informative links. Today I sprinkle in politics, humor and tech but my blog is still a personal journal open to the public.

Simply put: I blog for prosperity. http://realityme.net/about/why-i-blog/

  • Back in 2007, I wanted to start some kind of online project for myself. I was a Flash developer and was loving the new web 2.0 movement that was just starting up and wanted to be a part of that.

I had just recently learned about Twitter and Virb.com and was trying to think up ideas about what to create. I did a google search for the keywords SEO optimization because I knew whatever I started, I needed people to find it easy. That’s when I discovered ProBlogger.net :)

Anyways, at the end of May 2007, StarCraft 2 was announced! I played the original Starcraft competitively back in the day, it was almost a 10 year old game and all Starcraft gamers have been waiting for the sequel to come out. That’s when I decided to start a blog about StarCraft 2, 1) because it was a passion of mine and 2) I figured I could make a little money on the side via google ads. I’ve come to learn now that google ads suck, at least for my type of blog.

In the past 3 years I’ve grown the blog from nothing, to being one of the most, if not the most recognized blog about StarCraft 2. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without reading Problogger.net religiously for the first year to get started… I’ve gone through a lot of different stages in a bloggers life, but there is still room to grow, and the game isn’t even out yet! :)

  • i started learning html almost 15 years ago when i first got the internet at home. blogging is just a way to continue learning more in that direction.

  • I started just as a place to share my pictures and random thoughts with family and friends (and to share interesting articles with them as well).

But since then it’s evolved into a full-time business blogging about all kinds of different topics and niches and even turning my blogs into leverage for some of the things I’m selling.

But it all started as a place to share my “art” with anybody who cared to look and listen.

  • Hey everybody.

I started blogging with the only purpose of getting new referrals for my PTC sites. Soon, I realised that blogging had become a world wide business and not just personal pages letting others know what you like and do in life. I decided to give it a goal and I’ve become absolutely passionate for blogging. I’m not making any real money yet, but I love blogging and sharing with others what I’ve learned so far. I think that should be the main purpose and concern for starters. Evertyhing else just comes along with hard work.
Best of luck and sucess for everyone.

  • It was December of 2008. Yuletide season is a cruel month for unattached, lonely people. I was kinda lonely so I started blogging. Well, what do I know, the first months of blogging is even lonelier – I had no reader. There’s only one voice I heard on my blog – and that’s me.

Nine months later – I’m very thankful I’ve persevered. I have lots of blogging buddies many of whom I have met already. And now I have readers, too.

December is fast coming up. Will it be lonely again? Maybe not. My blog has now evolved to something else. And if ever I’d be lonely again, I’m better equipped now in handling it. Blogging – writing it down – taught me all that. :)

  • I started blogging because I had so much to say about my art and how it related to the experiences of my life, mostly my travel experiences which I love to talk about, that I needed an outlet. Not too many people stay still long enough to listen to all the stories I have to tell. By blogging, I can tell the experiences, relate them to my art, share my images and photographs and the viewer can see them and read them at his/her convenience.

It is working for me, except I am not suure howmany people are actually reading the blog. I get emails from fridns once in a while, but not too often. I would like more people to be reading it truly.

  • I started my blog because of my love for books. It’s turning out to have some good side benefits besides the (tiny) amount of money it’s making though.

Writing up the reviews makes me think a bit more about the books I’m reading. And, the blog has made me branch out in my reading, finding books I wouldn’t normally have read. Yes, making money was a motivation, but as long as it’s fun, that’s not the main point.

  • I needed somewhere to track my progress as I needed to lose some weight, started on blogger and went from there. My motivation is different now as I want to earn from it one day but overall I still enjoy educating people about health.

  • At firs, I started blogging (on BlogSpot) just to leave an online mark of my existence. I actually planned to leave my blog and not updating it regularly, then I would wait for a few years then visit it and say “Oh I wrote this a few years ago” and smile.

But then I started to like it. I felt satisfied when I wrote something on my blog and people reading it. Then I started to make a few dollars from blogging then I became more and more interested in blogging.

Now I’m learning to be a professional blogger and try to make it a full time profession of mine by learning, hard-working, and persistence.

  • Hi,Darren. If you ask me why I landed on this blogging planet, maybe I could blame my being unemployed as the culprit. I taught English, part time, at a local university. And the salary was nearly sufficient just to keep me well-fed, seriously. The salary was paid on a very IRregular basis. Since I worked as a unofficial part time tutor there, I naturally didn’t have any legal ground to make complaints or legal actions on that (Poor me..). Then I decided to bid farewell to the institution, for good.
Now that I’m jobless, I’ve got more time to get online. I read lots of blogs offering making money online. It did spark off my curiosity. Can I get some, oh no..MUCH, VERY MUCH real cash from blogging?
So, to be short, the first time I voluntarily involved myself in blogging, it was entirely because of cash. Last month, I started blogging, using any free resources I can get in the Internet. I don’t have a domain, hosting, or any things a pro blogger has to have. But who cares, at least I do something.
But then I realized I’ve got to have something to offer, something different that makes people stay on my blog. But how? I was technically miserable, now and then. I’m still as blind as before when it comes to HTML editing or things like that. Then I knew I should write what I really know, and as I love English language and literature, I thought it was a cool idea to build a blog on those topics. As time went by, I learned blogging in English would be quite an advantage, financially! Though I’m not living in an English speaking country, but I learn it for years. You know, it’s about Google Adsense people always buzz on the Internet comment boxes and posts. Learning this, I blog more actively on my Blogger ones and leave my Wordpress blogs because I was informed it’s harder to monetize our WP blog.
Sometimes it’s hard for me to find the reliable source of blog learning and real mentor. There’re millions blogs out there offering tips,e-books either free or not. Confusion arises, and I find myself helpless in the jungle of blogging. But I’m lucky enough to find several gurus (like you, Darren!-I’m not flattering) to guide me. Sadly I have no credit card to order your e-books, 31 days to be a better blogger. But after I get a job, I’ll have it and grab your e-books ASAP.

  • I started Earsucker (my music blog) because I wanted to be read about a topic that I care about. Along the way, I figured it would make some money, but it’s really cool that I can make a few bucks sharing my opinions about the music I love (and hate)…

  • I started blogging because I wanted a way to reach out and share my talents in the online dating world with geeks who weren’t so good at it.

I have a dual-niche blog, so other than the Geek Love stuff, my assistant and I also post about all manner of things Geek Life – RPGs, movies, sci-fi, etc etc.

It’s been a year and a half and I’m totally loving what my blog and business have grown into… and looking forward to growing even more in the future!

  • I started blogging because I like to write, I like to share what I know about money and finance, and because I like instant gratification! When I write a blog post I know it will be published!

Even though I write about money and finance topics, I don’t expect to earn a living through my blogs. My “work” is in the offline world, that way my blogging is my fun and my passion.

  • I started blogging 5 years ago to keep an online journal about what it was like to have cancer, what my treatments were like, what I was feeling during the process, how I was coping with a terminal illness. It was just a natural progression to move my handwritten journal to the online format.

As I got through my 1st & 2nd surgeries, three different treatments, a period of being ‘normal’ and then had a relapse and more treatment and another surgery, the blog changed. I was writing less about my direct experiences with cancer and more about living with cancer and through cancer and other things like dog-training and camping which I enjoy and which IMO make living worthwhile.

At some point I started to get subscribers and comments, and I decided I wanted to get better at blogging. I took your 31 Days BBB challenge, Darren. I decided to move my blog to a new platform so I’d have more flexibility. I went from a free Blogger blog to a free Wordpress blog (haven’t made the leap to my own doman and site yet.) I needed a blog project for a writing course, so I did some informal research to find out which of my hobbies might fill a niche in blogging, and actually found two areas where I thought my writing would work.

Turns out that dog training (about which I’m both passionate and experienced) and canning/preserving (which I enjoy and am good at) were both comfortable niches in which I could start smaller blogs that were offshoots of my main blog. Kitchen Jam: Improv with Food has been live for a month, and with the help of food bloggers on Twitter, I’m having a lot of fun pushing my skills in a niche where pictures are a big part of that type of blogging (just what I needed–an excuse for a new camera.) I write KJ for the photography challenges, but I write Dog Trainer’s Log just for me (I think). I started it by reworking some of the dog-related posts in LOL, and am adding to it as an online training log for my senior dog and my 7 y.o. agilty/obedience dog.
LOL is about survivorship, and sometimes needs to be pretty scientific and link-heavy. KJ is just about me having fun in the kitchen with prerserving and with my new camera. DTL is about working the kinks out of my dogs’ lives and performances, and I haven’t decided if I’m going to let it get serious about training philosophy. I could stay focused on my current dogs’ lives and training logs and like it just as much, so I’ll see how it evolves.

In any case, I like the challenge of blogging on different topics and to different audiences. I’m at the point where developing new ideas and posting 2-3 times/week is still addicting, and I keep blogging because I like that fix!

  • I started ILovePhotoblogs back in 2008 due to my passion for photography. The idea of monetizing this site was never a motivating factor, I was just looking for a way to showcase photographers on one site. I have never given enough time or thought into SEO to really grow my traffic, however, I mainly enjoy conversing with other photographers. Maybe I will get serious about SEO, link building and creating/selling information material. Best of luck to those already making a living through blogging! This article may provide the motivation I need to get to the next level.

  • I actually just posted 25 reasons a few days ago as to why I started a blog and why I keep going

  • We started blogging to stay in touch. We lived room by room in college and after finishing we went back to our different branches of service in the german armed forces. Talking about politics and technical gadgets was our favourite way to procrastinate so we try to do this via blog and share our opinions.
Making money is not a goal at all.

  • My first foray into blogging was very personal – it was an outlet for me. I had just placed my mother into a nursing home after trying to manager her early onset Alzheimer’s disease for more than six years. I needed a place to write about the effects of Alzheimer’s on a family and offer some advice to others.

From there I started blogging about family memories and history and found an entire group of blogger who also blogged about their own genealogy research and family history.

Blogging really got me through a very difficult time in my life.

  • The motivation for my first blog was to keep friends and family at home abreast of my travel plans. When I decided to plan another around the world trip I decided I needed a blog with a bigger scope, I want to encourage other young people that travel is a valid and viable life choice. Eventually I’d like to monetize, but just a couple months in I’m happy just to get the message out.

  • I started blogging on myspace — usually about the wacky things I’d be doing for my job as a runner in Hollywood, — but then started up my actual blog ( ScriptXRay ) to record what I was learning about screenwriting.

I only recently discovered Darren’s work here and realized I could probably pull in a few bucks for coffee due to the others in my niche interested in screenwriting.

  • The main reason I started a blog was to see what it was like to do it, and frankly, to build up my skill-set. Then, when I became laid off recently, one of my resolutions was to post three entries a week, whether I felt like it or not and whether I cared or not and whether I had anything interesting to say or not. (Some of you prolific bloggers might find this this 3x/week thing kind of funny.) I’d been a newspaper reporter, and this is slowly starting to feel more natural to me, and I’m slowly starting to find my “voice.”

  • The purpose of TheDebtHawk.com is to help people understand the impact debt will have on their lives.

At eighteen years of age in the United States, college kids across the United States and in many other countries are getting themselves in huge amounts of debt all for the purpose of getting an education.

Teenagers need to understand how this debt will affect them all their lives. Hopefully, The Debt Hawk will help people to stay out of debt or to help them to get out of debt if they made the same mistake as me.

  • I started my blog to teach. To share what I’ve learned over the past 30 years from trading options. It’s rewarding to get positive feedback. And that’s been my reward.

Now I’m working on monetizing the blog, and that’s more difficult – despite all the ideas I’ve taken from Problogger.

  • I started blogging over three years ago as a way to write consistently. I’ve always loved writing and wanted more opportunities. I was curious about the blogging thing and wanted to see what it was like.

Also it was a way to open myself to new possibilities by sending my dreams into the universe to manifest. It’s working!

  • My blog was initially a way to join in with the fitness/weight loss community in the shared struggle to escape obesity and develop a healthier way of living. An online support system, if you will. Having shed 100 pounds, I’m at goal now, but I continue blogging to share the “secrets” of my success, in hopes that they’ll enable others to achieve their own measures of success. Plus, it’s loads of fun.

  • I started the website for my own travel stories but it has now been restructured and republished with travel guides, tour ideas, vacation deals and personal travel stories. It’s been an interesting journey so far!

  • I started blogging a year and a half ago, to get more invovled in the online design /& freelance community — and i thought i’d be cool. :)

  • Interesting topic. I started my blog to practice my English skills for examination and it helped a lot. My next motivation was my interest in journalism, so blog for me was the only free way how could I practice it. Recently i also added new motivation to my list- blog to find new contacts from other countries.

  • I started my blog with the sole motivation of travelling more…luckily this is starting to bare fruit, getting to know more of my country and its tourists attractions. Making money is an additional motivation…along the journey I’ve also learnt that my blog is a vehicle to launch other complimentary blogs/portals as a result of traffic generated through this blog.

  • The first blog that I used for blogging in the true since was started because I wanted to write a book. I’d read on a writing blog that the best way to practice writing was to do it everyday. So I started my blog to keep me going, and set it as my homepage in Firefox so the date would remind me to write

I’m still not steady at it, but I’m getting there. My writing skills have improved immensely, as well as my communication skills. It’s like I can put things in order better. I now have plans to start two other blogs that are centered around hobbies.

  • I started blogging last year because I love writing. I wanted to share ideas with other moms and encourage them…I had a website in mind. then I found out about blogging and wordpress and I was so excited I could do all this for free! I love it!
Doing the 31DBBB thing made me think more clearly about what exactly I wanted from my blog, so my vision has grown a bit. I hope to have a ministry from this one day…but I started first and foremost because I just love to write.

  • I started my blog to work through my grandfather’s death and a family crisis. That time was so painful. I missed him so much. I write about how he would view current events in my life and the world from his front porch rocking chair perspective and raising my children in an ever changing political world. And I throw in pest control advice to round things out! The little blog that could…has a great following and has given many a smile, a nod, or cry.

Even mentioned on the Daily Show!

  • I started Geektrospective! (geektrospective.blogspot.com) to share my views and inform people about all things nerd. I started a second blog Chasing Wonder With Words (chasingwonderwithwords.blogspot.com) about two days ago to share my short fictions and other art based stuffs… Check ‘em out!

  • I’m a (scary, rightwing) political blogger, so I started as a way to limit the screaming I did at the television. The evening news (war, terror bombings, government waste) was giving me what the Italians call “agita”, so I began blogging.

It’s a sick, codependent addiction. The agita didn’t go away, as i found myself learning more and reading more about the way the world works. My husband banned me from reading books about Jihad before bed. I spend thousands every year on conferences that I attend with the blog in mind.

Some time ago, Wendy (that was me) ceased to exist, and RightGirl (also me) took her place.

Blogging is like heroin. Once you get past the first taste, you’re hooked for life.

I love it, and would never give it up.

  • I started with the intention of making money. I’ve made 1’s of dollars so far, but I haven’t shifted my focus to making money yet. I’m still trying to build authority. I’m not sure if my current topic the way it is will ever make me money, but I’m still trying to figure out what my audience wants and what I could blog forever about. For now the general focus is a family focused blog, but it could easily change if I came up with an idea that would work better.

  • I started to give my self a goal. I would post one photo a day for a year, write about the photo and a little about what I am doing. Two days ago I completed my goal and finished my first year. I will continue, but there will be some changes. I would now like to get into some affiliate marketing. Making money is something that never occured to me – maybe it will be something that can happen in the future!

  • I just didn’t have anything else.

I had lost my job. I had too much time and I was doing to little else. I had to do something to keep learning and challenging myself. Now I’m working again, and got my life moving in a little better direction. I don’t know how related that change is to blogging, but I think there is some correlation. Either way, I have become so enamored with it, it would be hard for me to stop.

  • I started blogging as another avenue for my affiliates. But then I found out that I adore blogging and that it was a great way to share information. So I turned my focus more in that direction. Now I have my own business and my own products but blogging is a big mainstay of all that.

  • I started blogging in 2006/2007 because I wanted to share my knowledge about NLP. There was (and is) no other blog in Dutch doing it.

  • I started to blog because I notice that blogging is the best medium to delivering something that you like to share with others.

Thats why I started http://www.pma2u.net. To empowers people and let them know that they can achieve their goals no matter what.

  • I started my blog with a view to building it into a business. My goal was to combine my purpose (helping people achieve dreams and live a kick arse life) with my passions (writing, being creative, giving back and having fun) and turn it into a business. Blogging was the perfect platform to do that.

  • When I first started Green and Chic, it was just to promote my products but it grew fast. Its not only about my web store. Actually, I rarely bring up the store though its connected to the blog.

When I first started, I hardly knew what a blog was aside from Live Journal!

  • I started blogging as a means of motivating myself to write, and hopefully improve my writing – writing is something I really enjoy once I’ve got a concrete reason to keep going. I’m also interested in how blogging and new media can (and can’t) work – so starting my own blog seemed the best way to explore that.

  • With retirement several years down the road, I began to consider what I would do during those years. I’ve never been the idle type, so I knew I needed something to do. No rocking chairs for me :-)

Since I’ve been using computers since 1980, I thought I would continue to use these skills and build an online business that would generate a decent income. I found blogging attractive because I can travel and continue to build my online biz.

What I’ve discovered is a wonderful way of life with blogging, social media networking and the day to day challenges of building a successful online enterprise.

Blogging requires a ton of commitment and drive, but I love every minute of it.

  • I just started mine this weekend, after a long time of telling myself I would start a blog. I have three reasons. The first is to stop my procrastination. The second is to give some ideas to people in the same situation as myself. The third is simply to tell the story of what I’m doing and where I’m going.

Hopefully it will be of some interest / help to someone.

  • About five years ago, I turned to the internet to find other people who were successfully getting out of debt or managing their finances. It was a topic that I wanted to learn more about.

Now, that I am out of debt I have decided to share my story to help others. That is why I started to blog.

  • @ Akhlis

Wish you all the best, I found your story more sad and motivative. I think you should get a domain name and move away from .blogspot.com at least that should help you come little bit down to something around 2,000,000 from the 11,000,000 Alexa within 1 month of frequent posting,

And work more on your backlinks to help you rank well in google. you deserve to earn from your blog, you see just like me I am not spending much on my website and blog because earning is not about spending its about smartness. you may contact me for more clue. Hope you get to read this anyway ;).

  • I started blogging because I had something I wanted to say. Even if no one read my thoughts, I still wanted to voice them. I’m so happy to have started blogging, and I’m glad I jumped in!

  • A little bit about what I started blogging:
    http://www.timetoembark.com/blog/?p=1

Still developing my voice, focus and getting comfortable with more than 140 characters.

    Thanks for asking!

  • I started blogging because I was told I couldn’t talk about blogging unless I was doing it. What I thought would be a couple of weeks turned into 5+ years resulting in friends all over the globe and amazing opportunities.

  • Fame, fortune and a fast cars!

I started blogging because it was a great way to connect and with other, get feedback on posts and interact. Rather than a static website where the message goes one way, blogging has been an on-going conversation.

  • I started blogging as it was an easier way to keep people updated than updating a static website and then it became more of a personal journal to keep myself updated on how I was going and to test out political ideas and arguments.

I didn’t really think about gaining a readership then.

  • I started my first blog after moving from the US to Argentina as a way of overcoming homesickness and learning to appreciate my new home. I figured writing about the things I liked about Argentina would motivate me to find more nice things to share. It worked. Blogging inspired me to go more places, travel more around the country, and open my mind to the culture. It was a very positive experience. I’ve only recently started to blog about my other interests in different blogs and it’s a great way to learn more and share what I learn with other people. It started as a hobby, but I’m getting much more serious about it now.

  • I started blogging due to my Favorite Soap Opera….Days of our Lives….I got into watching the show on youtube vs. taping it on my VCR. THen I decided to start writing my own Fan Fiction, so, then I learned there was a website that someone created that had my favorite couple from the show on it, which then fielded my interest even more. so, then I began to write fan fiction on this website and I have been a blogger ever since. I have been a blogger now for almost 5 months now. I LOVE IT! If you are a Fan of DOOL (Days of our Lives) and want to read some of my Dialogues…don’t hesitate to email me. I am at: fmlygrl1975@yahoo.com See ya Online…….I also on twitter.

  • I started blogging (originally) to share my life and everyday thoughts with my friends and to have a memory of what life was like. (I was 12, lol).

I started my recent blog because, well, nobody else seemed to be providing me with the information that I wanted. “Blogging” is often talked about, but what about “writing” or character development? I only found two blogs on writing, so I decided to make one myself and build it up…

I still have a personal blog to appease my moments of random thoughts and rants, but I love my new “professional” blog too. :)

  • I began my blog to share my QuickBooks knowledge with others giving me the opportunity to teach others which is my favorite part of my job.

My blog is still in the “infant” stages but I am enjoying it!

  • I began my blog to share my QuickBooks knowledge with others giving me the opportunity to teach which is my favorite part of my job.

  • I started blogging for two reasons:

    1. I had a backlog of ideas that I wanted to see implemented that I was never going to implement. So I wanted to get them out there so that other people could do them.

    2. I had myu own products that the press refused to tell their readers about. They always had an excuse. I decided to go around them and go straight to the users and tell them myself. It worked. :-)

Today I blog for many reasons, but you asked why I started. This is why.

  • Hey…love your post. I pretty much started just as something to do. I have alot of opinions on alot of things and I just want to see different responces to my thoughts…my personal blog is fairly new…only a few weeks old and Im still trying to get the hang of it and trying to keep finding fresh topics to speak about.

I eventually want another blog that showcases my fictional writing but i wanted to try with a personal blog first. Either way I love this outlet and I hope I will get my voice out there and get a following.

  • started blogging last year because I love writing. I wanted to share ideas with other moms and encourage them…I had a website in mind. then I found out about blogging and wordpress and I was so excited I could do all this for free! I love it!.thanks.

  • I started blogging to promote our brick-and-mortar business online and generate more leads. After jumping into this world, it is now too addictive to give up! :)

  • Blogging initially served as cathartic for me. I had just lost my father and was out of sorts. I learned later that money could be made, but I’ve never really worked at it. I call my blog Peace of Mind Now in an attempt to help people get in touch w/what is missing in their lives.

  • I always wanted my own radio station or something, because I have so much that I love to talk about, and blogging seemed like the 21st century solution to that! Seriously, my university students asked me to start a blog because there are few mentors in the advocacy/organizing fields for social workers, so they wanted to continue our conversations about social issues and macro practice strategies. I’m learning as I go and beginning to reach audiences beyond my own students, and it has cut down on my yelling at the radio news!

  • I started blogging when I changed the main focus of my web site from fixed content to ever changing content. I found it was the best way in order to help keep people up to date on important technical issues.

I now regularly post on 2 blogs – my personal blog and my technical blog. The personal blog is more a Lifestream blog for me.

  • Originally I started http://mlmoutsidethebox.com/ to help people thinking of going into any type of Multi-Level Marketing program. I had been burned by a few programs myself and I was tired of the “everyone can join and become a millionaire!” attitude. Now, however, I talk about anything and everything. My motivations were never really on making money blogging, but I quickly picked up on the opportunity.

  • I started my blog so I could keep writing about literature. I really had no goals or motivations (i.e. making money – that came later), I saw it more as a hobby that would keep my immersed in the literary world.

  • As a platform to share my midday escapades – a way for me to escape the daily grind of my boring job. I jumped right in with a giveaway and now I’m hooked on giveaways myself!

  • I started my blog in early July when my job of 10 years ended. I’ve always worked for love and gotten paid for it, something professional bloggers have perfected. I’m truly lovin’ it and thanks to all the good training available I bet I’ll be getting paid for it within a year. Thanks for your constant sage advice.

  • I started my blog because I finally feel like I have something to say that others may want to hear (and will hopefully benefit from as well). I believe that one person trying to make positive choices will encourage others to do the same. My blog allows me to “think out loud” and hopefully get others thinking too…

  • I started blogging (photoblog) about 3 months ago , just as something else to do while I looked for work. Been posting relatively regularly and am now on my 54th post . I’ve found that my reasons for continuing to blog have changed and am quite enjoying the entire experience. My posts have been rather random in nature and now I find that I am looking for a bit more direction and structure as to where to take it. don’t know where yet but hopefully I’ll figure it out soon.

    Peace

  • I started two blogs for 2 different reasons.
1st http://mysocialmediaproject.blogspot.com simply because I wanted to share with the world what I learned, as I learned it, about social media.
2nd http://inspiredlifesite.blogspot.com because I had things I wanted to say to women who are at a cross road in their life like I am. It has been truly a liberating experience. Like David I enjoy thinking out loud.

  • I teach guitar and I’m always noticing students of other guitar teachers who decide they don’t have the motivation and patience for playing. I always found myself having long conversations with my students about it and not one of them yet has fallen off the inspiration train.

So I decided to share these conversations to the world through my blog and see how many more people I can save from falling away from being musically great.

    Cheers!

    - G. E. Marrs

  • I started blogging because I enjoy being on the computer and sharing my life experiences with others. It’s also my way of creating my own journal as I would never write a real one, my blog is my journal.

My main goal is to make money through different niche websites that are in low competition areas.

  • I originally started to blog as a means to help fill a void in interesting FX trading stuff from a retail trader perspective. The monetization aspect of the blog only occurred to me to try once I read about how other bloggers monetized their blogs and I was encouraged by a friend of mine (a SEO / blog consultant) to give it a shot. I’m learning as I go and though trading is my primary focus I’m pretty happy so far with my blog’s progress in the short period of time that I’ve been running it.

  • I’m a textile artist . . . I started blogging about 6 months ago . . .

Originally, my idea was to chronicle the creation of my quilts on my blog . . . over time, I started discussing my unique way of designing 2-dimensional patterns, and a book idea was born . . .

My website has been updated, I’m growing a mailing list of quilters eager for my book (and giving away the heart of the book as a “freebie”), and a Yahoo! group has started, centered around me and my design system

  • To be honest I started blogging because I thought I might be able to make some extra cash. You might say it was purely for the money :).

The funny thing is I’ve found it to be a lot of fun. I learn new things about a topic I love every day and I’m fascinated by the process. I guess its sort of backwards from what you would normally expect.

  • I started blogging almost three years ago. The initial motivation for starting a new blog was to maintain a online personal diary. But later on my perspectives changed and i moved on to writing poetry to things which i liked. Though I blogged rarely, after i began reading your blog I think its time to change. Organize myself and start posting enjoy great readership at first and maybe later turn into a full time blogger. :)

  • I’m a consumer journalist, so I began blogging because I love sharing buying tips and information with people. I also wanted to make some money, if I could figure out how to do that.

The writing part takes time as does the photography, but those are things that journalists are trained to do.

The marketing, however, is another matter. I have a lot to learn. That’s why the Problogger is so helpful.

  • Over the years, I’ve had a habit of sharing my (sometimes quirky) writing with friends or small groups of friends.

I received from positive feedback on one piece of writing from a friend who told me that he runs a successful blog. Until that point in time, it had never occurred to me that a blog would be a good way to share with a wider audience and get immediate feedback.

Money was very much a secondary thought (which is really good, considering the CTR of my site :)

  • Initially I started blogging because I saw my friend’s personal blog in September 2008. His blogging about daily activity and his research in Japan.

I created my personal blog in wordpress.com. I posted everything that I liked. Of course, I didn’t Darren Rowse, Yaro Starak, John Chow, etc at the moment.

Six months later, I found a book about make money from blog (local author) at a local book store. I passionate to make money blogging. Unfortunately, I couldn’t monetize this blog (TOS WP prohibited).

Finally, I created new self-hosted blog 3 months ago (in Indonesian Language). I will monetize this blog next year because my traffic is little now.

    Best regards from Indonesia.

  • Blogging is a new phenomena to our business and we want to use it tp promote our website as a source of information (rather than instruction) both for our existing clients and for those looking for professional financial planning advice.
As newcomers to the art of blogging (only made our first post this morning), we are looking to absorb as much as possible as quickly as possible – with a view to supporting the work we are undertaking on the website.
Love this site and will refer friends to it.

  • I originally started blogging to try and earn a 2nd income, but then quickly started up my poetry blog as a way to share my art with readers who would appreciate it.

Though I earn a little bit by blogging, it equates to much less than minimum wage. I do it because I enjoy writing and sharing my views and thoughts with readers, for my technology products I enjoy putting my own spin as an IT Security Engineer and technology enthusiast on the products I review and talk about.

  • I started with two ideas in mind. i wanted to improve my writing skills by writing about something I enjoy–movies. I also thought I might be able to earn a little extra income.

I am enjoying my blogging experience and learning a lot. But I am still waiting for the income.

  • For years I had started blogging and quit after 2-10 posts.

It was only when I found a subject that would never dry out and I could always find a way to write about, the blogging really stuck with me. And then I quickly professionalized the blog around that subject: reviewing intellectual podcasts.

So, basically, I started blogging for a very vague want of writing, but it only became persistent blogging, when I found one subject I was passionate about.

  • I started blogging years ago on my personal blog as a means to simply let my friends and family know what was going on in my life… and of course to keep record of my day to day happenings. In May of this year however I finally started a new blog on disease prevention and longevity with the sole intention of connecting to my wife’s field (she’s in medical school) and as away to diversify our income. I’m about to hit four months of blogging professionally (albeit not for major income yet, but one day).

I like the duality of my professional blog as it is something that is focused enough to have a following from subscribers yet broad enough to focus on search traffic and make some money. My wife has even started plugging new topics for posts for me so it’s nice that it helps bring us together.

  • That is a great question to every blogger, we really should think about this seriously.
Well, I must say that I was blogging for money at the beginning. If you didn’t want to make money online, I think that I wouldn’t be a blogger now.
But when I really got started, I found that blogging is really an art, it is not so simple just writing and posting. You need to focus on your niche if you want to be a successful or a good blogger, it is very challenging, but I really fell in love with it, it makes my life better :).

  • some people I know use blogs to chronicle their life’s lessons to share the world–misfortunes and all. these blogs started as a personal growth tool but are lucky to come across as interesting for other people and earned quite a following too. well i guess it all boils down to how good the blog owner is. :)

  • i like your post here, actually i added you already in my list so that i will be updated here. well, i started my blogging career co’z i want to earn some money but unfortunately i don’t know how to do it like yours. can you help me?

  • I started blogging for 2 reasons. Writing about my safari past and to create presence on the internet. Now I am starting to make my fist money with the blog. Cool!

  • For me, blogging is a very stimulating activity. I started blogs to keep my writings alive online, then I started playing with ideas on blogs and money followed. Now I earn a little and do every thing else for what I had started blogging.

  • Hi Darren,

I have been tracking your blog for quite sometime now and trust me i have derived all the inspiration from you. When I first came in contact with your blog i was totally blown when I saw the kind of loyal readers and the thoughts everyone shares on your blog. And of course the kind the money your blog makes;-)

I started my blog around 5 months back with the only intention of getting people involved in good conversation. My blog lacked the feel and look of a platform where people would be interested not until recently I came across this wonderful lady from Australia who helped me setup my blog properly and gave it a new and fresh look where I post the stuffs i know and get some good info feeds from great blogs out there.

  • Money, plain and simple is why I started blogging.

  • At the beginning i started blogging for earning. But after spending much time on this,i feel that it is the best way for improving knowledge.it is not so simple just writing and posting. You need to focus on your niche if you want to be a successful or a good blogger. It is really a great art.

  • There were two reasons. The first was to share my views on weight loss, fitness, health, and family. I hope to build community out of my blog. The second was to use the process as a de facto teaching tool for the internet, blogging platforms, etc.

  • To fully understand how it works. As they say ” seek first to understand then to be understood”. Then one question leads to another. First was how to register followed by , how did other blogger removed the nav bar, then started to research.

The more you ask questions, the more questions there will be. It never stops coming.

  • I started blogging because I was hired to, i grew interest in it and love to all share my views. I work an online marketing industry, so i have to understand how to market using a blog.

  • My reason at first was to earn a little, then as time goes by it becomes a business already hoping it’ll help my family minus that 8-4 day job.

  • I’m not actually a blogger, since i lurk around the area from a long time, but never start any real blog.

My first experience was in the Make Money Online Hype, It didn’t really went well, because all the standart probles, today i make some income , but not as nearly as a person who put some real effort would.

I guess its not only here but, many people start blogging and give up soon because they don’t find making money with blogs easy, many bloggers say that you shouldn’t start a blog to make money, my opinion is simple, its not the motivation that makes you fail, its how you porsue it.

We see several bloggers making money, the real deal is simple, they make money because the actually are involved in blogging, i don’t quite remember the name , but there a guy who said “i make money online by teaching people how to make money online”, that makes my point clear,if you have an objective and pursue it in a way you keep yourself motivated in all the process , you have a greater chance of suceding.

  • i started because i love writing. If people want to pay me for it, then that’s just a bonus. I hope some day i can get the kind of following Darren gets with this blog. It’s just phenomenal how word can spread so quickly on the internet about peoples’ blogs.

  • I started my blog because I saw a growing need for husbands to be better husbands. I have a passion for helping marriages, and so I decided to try and help marriages by trying to improve them from the husband’s standpoint. Though I’ve yet to be financially successful, the blog has hit a nerve for many men (and women), and I am thankful for that.

    http://www.iamhusband.com

  • My first blog was purely for fun and a hobby. After a while I learned how I could make enough money off it to pay for expenses.

After a while I figured out I could earn a lot more than just pay the expenses. That was when I started actually moving towards a professional blogger status and building blogs that appeal to a wider audience. While I still blog to my passions I also produce blogs that are purely created for grabbing search engine rankings and to earn money. So I guess my focused changed a lot from when I first started.

  • I started to keep myself accountable while losing weight.

4 years, 3 blogs and a 2,500+ member Ning community later, I’m keeping the weight off and having the time of my life!

  • I’ve recently taken the leap into the world of freelance and want to blog my experiences to, hopefully, help others who decide to do the same! I’m also going to use it as a checklist/diary tool, so I blog what I’m going to do and then blog after I’ve done it. I’m far to new to it all to even think about making any money from it – for me it’s good to keep my writing skills up to scratch.

  • I started blogging after seeing you. I saw that it is possible to make money through Blogs.

So, you are my motivation, heads up to you!

  • Great question! I started my first blog to connect better with my followers. Email marketing wasn’t having a big impact with my business at that time… mind you, my list was small back then.

But even with that small list, when I began to blog and include video, pictures, and audio, I formed an instant connection with my followers which immediately increased sales of my programs.

The big impact was that I overcame many of their skepticism’s and became someone that they could trust and relate to.

So my motivation was to be able to build trust and credibility which would increase my sales and conversions. My motivation to use a blog was because it allowed me to use various forms of multimedia.

  • I started my blog mainly to help promote my business (consulting to help lawyers, consultants, accountants and other professionals attract more clients & win more business). Not being a published author or well-known guru, I figured a blog might give me more visibility and credibility. And it did.

But I also found it tremendously useful in clarifying my own thinking on the topics I blogged about. Many times, when I blogged about a subject I though I knew about, the process of blogging highlighted gaps in my thinking and knowledge.

So blogging has been a trememdously useful learning experience for me too.

  • Hi Darren,

Since today is my one year anniversary of starting Tumblemoose, this is an interesting question – one I’ve been reflecting on over the past few days.

I started the blog as a natural platform for building my writing services business. I remember doing the research beforehand. I kept seeing something called WordPress and I ran across a site called ProBlogger and I was influenced to jump in and make a blog happen.

At this one year mark I can say I’m glad I’ve done this and I’m having a great time.

    Cheers

    George

  • I started blogging a year ago for several reasons.

First, I run workshops I consider very important and wanted to reach a wider audience with some of the messages and ideas.

Second, I’ve long has a dream of writing and this was a way of realising that dream

Third, I had some time on my hands last summer and wanted to try something new, so I decided to learn how to get a blog going from zero starting point.

Fourth, to invest in building an income generator over the long term.

  • Mine started as a passion to improve myself and my own dating life (not even thinking of a blog at the time).

Five years later I feel I can really help others with their dating lives and relationships and a blog is a simple way to do that.

Also, there are so many blogs out there in my niche giving out poor, socially-conditioned relationship advice, mainly from feelings rather than experience that my blog is a way to try and combat that and help out people in the process. :)

  • I started my blog (still not fully operational) recently for two main reasons:
    1. to improve my writing
    2. to create an online presence for myself

    Other less important reasons were:
    a. I like talking about travel, news, and cycling
    b. I found there wasnt many blogs in my category

  • Hi Darren, I was your reader for a long time. every I want to start a serious blogging, I just feel not patience ehen the result will come. I Have one wuestion for you, in your opinon, right now, am I too late to start blogging? Thanks

  • I had a backlog of about 35 short articles on hand that I had been writing as part of my energy conservation “Day Job.” I wanted to get them out to a wider audience and try to get some money from them too. A because blogging seemed like a good vehicle so I started and now I keep it going
    because I find it satisfying.

  • I knew about blogging since I was 12 years old. Had started a few personal blogs too, but got involved full time into blogging only in 2008. I wanted to do something for the society and was confused as to how shall I do it.

Blogging came out to be one of the best possible ways to influence change and affect public opinions. So I blog about important national, international, youth related and grass root issues at my blog Youth Ki Awaaz (Mouthpiece for the youth). So, the main reason behind my blog was to change the way people think about certain issues.

    Cheers to all others. :)

  • I first started blogging because I wanted to write a personal travel diary about Japan for myself. I thought it would be less of a hassle to update my journal online than to stow a traditional paper diary in my suitcase…

  • I started blogging after a stint working on the Martha Stewart Show in the Art Department. I recognized the topic and process of crafting is a great way to explore our personal and professional selves. We are a work in progress and using our hands opens ourselves up to the forward movement. . .

  • I’d started blogging to share the guides and tips everytime I was working with my iPhone. And the posts can be a good reference or resource for those who are looking for the guides.

And I’m trying to make money from blogging and hope it can cover some of my expenses like house loan, personal insurances and extra money for my vacations.

The iPhone Blogging is my blog’s name If you’re wondering.

    Cheers~~~

  • I have two reasons – the first is to make money because our local economy has tanked. I have a marketing background and it’s time to use the internet for profit.

My second reason is for the ability to change the world. I know the internet reaches millions of people and I want to spread the word of peace through cultural understanding. We’re all in this together and I hope to bring harmony into people’s lives.

  • I started blogging two months ago for inspiration and focus on my personal finance journey.

It’s been fun and I’ve learned a lot. If I can make money in the future that’s frosting on the cake.

  • I started blogging just to see if I could build a blog! I did and then it took off in a way I didn’t expect. But now I have a fairly popular blog with a number of loyal readers and a newsletter with a few hundred subscribers. Just enough to keep me from quitting but not enough to make any money. The need for money turned me to the idea of trying to make money this way and now I am working on blogs directed just at that. No success with that, yet.

  • Great question. Started my blog as a way to connect to the online knitting community, but it soon grew way beyond that. Now I regret the limited blog name and URL I chose in those early days (four years ago).

  • I started blogging over 6 years ago while taking a journalism class. I enjoyed the whole “community” spirit that generated from that blog. I had huge blog rolls and everyone would comment back and forth. It gave me the sense of belonging with like minded groups that were just a dream. I got out of it for awhile and recently just started back up — realizing I missed the “writing” community
Working full-time and having a family, takes a lot of time away but my writing is for me. I am struggling a bit, as it is not like it was 6 years ago. Blogging and personal journals get intermixed. So, it is learning all over again.
My blogs are Slice of Life Diet and We’re Not in Oz Any More –
The other important fact for me is that Writers are Readers Too and being in a community of other writers keeps me reading.

  • I had two reasons – one, I wanted to learn more about various aspects of culture – and wanted to create an online classroom of sorts. The other reason – it was a very cold weekend in Chicago, I couldn’t leave my apartment for days and it seemed like the perfect time to do it. These are the types of things that happen in life – a perfect storm of motivation and timing. So glad I did it!

  • I started blogging to build up my profile and spread my message – we can all have a great life AND make the world a better place at the same time.

It is only over the last 2 months that I have got more focussed and determined to make a blog a huge success, with quality posts, great design and a subscription base of 1,000s.

  • At first, it was my web journal to capture my thoughts, positivity and cover dating topics.

It was a few months later that I decided to develop my blog into a niche – dating/relationships/life coaching from a female perspective.

    and I LOVE IT!

  • When I first started blogging, it was to help me work through postpartum depression. I needed an outlet, and decided it was the way to go. Initially, I started blogging on Vox.com, where I could control who sees what on a post-by-post basis. Since then, however, I’ve started on Blogger, where I blog about a ton of things. I review books, write about life, bitch about politics, etc. I never had an intent to make money.

My motivations have since changed a little. While making money would be nice, I think connecting with others is my main goal. The blogosphere is just so neat to be a part of. I’ve found myself connecting with people I’d never have connected with outside the blogs.

  • To have my own space on the web and to be able to speak out feerly somewhere.

  • If writing is an art, then, blogging is one way of using words to come up with an art. This is because people who are into blogging are the ones who are artistic on their own sense, carefully choosing words that would best describe their feelings, sentiments, wishes, desires, and everything.

  • I was on the phone with a close virtual friend @MommaDJane back in December 2008 and she was telling me all about the wonderful influences she has met through blogging. I started blogging as a way to get connected with more people that have similar interests as me and pursue (and better) my love of writing.

Now that I do see revenue from my blog, it’s what keeps me moving forward knowing that the people I have met and will meet through my blog may eventually lead to my writing being better for a possible chance at writing a positive, optimistic book.

  • I started as a way to have an outlet to share my thoughts and opinions on my niche. What ensued after I started the blog was networking with other bloggers and partners, which have benefited me to this day.

  • I began my blog to jumpstart my freelance writing career. I used the topic I’ve written and been published in the most: film music. So far, I’ve maintained a daily post schedule since the blog officially launched on April 14. I’m giving myself until 6 months and then will probably pull back a bit. Seven posts a week is time-consuming and other projects are falling by the wayside.

The blog was began to give my writing an online presence, as well as my own “professional” website (which admittedly doesn’t look so professional at the moment and needs a LOT of work). The blog has made me a better writer, a faster writer (though not by much), and taught me all sorts of skills on top of it.

What caught me completely by surprise was the amount of great people I’d meet because of my blog. Relationships that continue not only on the blog but on Facebook and Twitter. All hail social media! :)

Ideally, I’d like to make some money off of it, but it’s a fairly narrow niche. If it helps bring in other paid writing gigs, then that’s ideal. Either way, I’ve found blogging to be addictive.

  • inspired by your 31 days series last week i started a simial free series for book bloggers. i began my blog five years ago to showcase some of rhe great books i read and reviewed for the newspaper and magazines where i had columns, but we ran out of space for our print editions. since then i hosted author chats, interviews with industry leaders and so much more: a social network for published authors, a hot topics radio show, local and national book events. so my focus now is to help book bloggers build the best blog they can, where to find publishing houses that will send them free books to review how to host author chats for bookclubs through skype, how to conver your blog into a book, it’s crazy. i learned how to monetize the blog here, but i don’t focus on that part as much as i should(i squeal by paying bills every month) but i know i wouldnt hae een able to squeak if it hadn’t been for this blog.

    thanks, daren!

  • i just started blogging actually. i just want to have an opportunity to explore on some things, and also practice my english (LOL) :P

i hope you could teach me some tips about blogging. thanks.

  • I started blogging last year just for fun. Now I have 8 blogs. Never intend to make money on blogging. Two of my blogs are personal. Six are about life in US and Marinduque, Philippines. Hope you visit my blog and I will visit yours.

  • I started blogging on a hobby I was interested in. I just expaned to other hobbies that I enjoyed. I now have over 30 blogs. Most are on music that I like. But many other topics I have an interest in.

  • I started my blog to help other people who were looking for work. I like to write and knew that there would be plenty of material. while other people who start blogs have trouble keeping up a schedule, I would blog a lot more if I had time. There are so many interesting and committed people our there. Thanks to all of you who are making a difference.

The one blog I recommend to everyone who will listen (besides Darren’s!) is beths blog. http://beth.typepad.com/
she writes about non profits but everyone can learn from beth.
If you have a way to help people looking for work, please connect with me. http://www.hellinthehallway.net

  • I actually started blogging years ago, as a way to archive the issues of the free email newsletter I’d been sending out to my animal communication clients. I discovered that I really enjoyed the format, and expanded that to a second, a hobby blog. Then a third, which covered esoteric topics like the paranormal, the law of attraction, etc (the ramblings of my brain, in other words).

Recently, I conglomerated them all by pulling them into a rebuild of my main website, under WordPress. The different blogs … which were for the most part generally related topics … became categories with subcategories.

It’s only been within the past year that the idea of actually monetizing my blogging efforts struck me as something that might help the finances as well.

  • Well, good question Darren! I started blogging because I am a tech savvy and thought I could cover the news as well as the bigger tech blogs.

So far things are looking good. I will be soon moving to Wordpress.org to put ads on my site and improve it.

  • Like alot of your replies I started a blog to earn money but now I am just interested in sharing my hobby with other people who are like minded and to share in their methods and creations

  • I started blogging six years ago for fun. I just really enjoyed it. Not just blogging but also getting to tweak templates, finding ways to customize my blog, and experimenting with different blogging platforms.

About a year ago, I started blogging professionally. Writing is my passion and I wanted to share what I know, so I combined the two passions. It just made sense.

Now I’m looking into advertising, trying to learn my way around that. I’m not ‘there’ yet as far as having enough traffic to make any money but I am working on ‘growing’ my blog so when it is time for the next step, I’m prepared. :)

    Debra

  • Good post. I started because I felt like I had something to say on my blog, about big companies and ethics: http://ethicalcorp.blogspot.com/

Blogging give me a way to make comment, post links and write thoughts without having to flesh them out into an article for my website http://www.ethicalcorp.com or in my magzine.

Some events are noteworthy, but not noteworthy enough for an article. Blogging helps communicate views on them to my community of readers.

Secondly, blogging means you can post links for others that they might miss on twitter etc.

  • I started blogging to increase my site indexation, but later I found out several other benefits in it.

My blog is now taking an informative direction helping people learn how to promote their websites in organic ways, specially through organic search engine optimization methods.

  • I always wanted to have a blog, never did because time didnt permit it. Full time work, full time student, full time mom… I recently had health issues that has caused me to slow down. Now Im here, doing what I like best… Educating families while having fun. Im very passioniate on matters such as family, and community. I can use my blog as an outlet and make money while doing so.

  • I start blogging because i want to earn money.Every one here want to earn money.
Actually the whole world is doing some thing to earn money.
Which is not the only aim of life.

  • I began my blog out of love for movies, TV, books and music. I wanted to concentrate on the content of entertainment and not celebrity gossip. Income on my blog would be great, but I’m looking to build a community where people come to get reliable reviews and forum to discuss what’s good and what to avoid.

  • I must admit, I started blogging because of one too many experiences with contractors who wanted to keep doing things the way they’d always been done, and didn’t want to face the communications tactics of the future.

  • I originally started my blog to show off my artistic ability and earning didn’t even come into what I had in mind, I just wanted to get on with drawing and show how I drew and give some tutorials and other fantasy art content, but lately I have tried to monetize it with some book reviews and adsense, but even still the primary motivation is to get my work out there and use my blog to prove that I can draw, not just to me, but to others who care to follow and use my blog as a basis for drawing fantasy art.

Although distractions do get in the way from time to time, I am trying to prioritize my best blogs now and work on content specifically for them only now and letting all of my other blogs that I have lost interest in, die a horrible death!!

  • I too actually started to blog because I loved to go rock climbing and wanted to write about it. Who knew that I would have come this far. Kinda crazy.

  • I started my post to talk about social media and all the things I am active in my community with. I am using it as a job search tool as well. Trying to become an “expert” in the field. Telling my story about my job search.

I am passionate about the Red Wings and I thought I would be doing personal interest type stories about the Red Wings then I found my passions being elsewhere when I found out there was a lot of other people more knowledgeable then me. Even though I work as an usher there and have attended training camps. I am not even to the level they are.

So I am still using it as a release for my social networking endeavors and using also for blogger relations. I have made some great contacts by commenting and also on my own blog. Which I would say I would not have found them had I not started blogging.

I started blogging on Myspace in about 2005 but that was a VERY personal blog. Which I liked at the time because you could lock your audience. If you want a select community they could only read your stuff. I liked that part originally but then I moved forward.

  • I used to write newsletters, and they were all archived on my website. Problem was, they were sorted by date and useful content was buried. My idea was to turn some of the better articles into blog posts and file them by category, so my readers could find and use them.

  • I started my blog in March 06 to share images of my sketches with other members in a Yahoo Group I had joined. My blog now targets a different audience although some of my original readers are still around. It is still about my art but in a broader sense now and the artistic roads I’ve taken in my real life have largely come about from the positive feedback from my blog as well as opportunities directly coming from it. Lately I’ve started to feature other artists and crafters’ work weekly. This has brought yet another audience. I am amazed how ‘organic’ my blogging experience has been; one thing leads to another beautifully.

  • I wanted to a carve a new path towards my goal of securing a book deal.

Publishers had stopped accepting manuscripts, so I started blogging my stories, songs, poems and novel chapters and optimising them via reader comments.

With the advent of WordPress, this process got a whole lot easier. I’m still striving!

Thanks for asking, Darren. Best regards, P. :)

  • I started blogging to see if I could do it. I had been researching it and finally decided to just start one. I am using Blogger, although I think I have outgrown it. Sharing my triumph over the hurdles life threw at me and overcoming some serious mistakes was my start and now I write because I love to do so. It has less to do with making money and driving traffic -even though that would be nice – than creating a connection.
I was asked to write a guest post on World’s Stongest Librarian and I felt so honored and it was a challenge. Josh loved it and said he will post it soon. That is the connection I was referring to. You just can’t find that anywhere else.

  • I mentioned earlier in the comments that I created a post recently about 25 reasons why I blog.

I wanted to write more but I was on my iphone and it gets annoying writing a lot.

I have always been drawn to being pretty transparent on the internet since 1995/1996. I remember being involved in chatrooms after school in grade 9. Met some amazing people that I am actually still in contact from time to time with. It’s been something that I’ve been comfortable with for a long time.

I am diagnosed with high anxiety and depression, and most recently we realized that it’s more related to bipolar disorder. My doctor and I are trying medication to help with my moods. The thing about blogging is that I feel so much more comfortable and so much more authentic as I write and blog. The sames goes with my photography.

I wanted a space to blur the line between my photography and my desire to share thoughts online via blogging. Starting a blog is about my hobby but it’s more become away to work against my depression.

Since starting my blogs and trying to get my photography/blogging business going, i’ve stopped drinking alcohol to the point of blacking out as well.

Blogging has changed my life and given me something to wake up excited to share with the world. It’s allowed me to show my photography and the way I see the world as a great place and find the beauty. Another way to fight depression.

My day job only feeds depression. My blog is my escape route. My passion and living my life the way I want – authentic.

  • It’s been quite a while since I last left a comment on your blog, Darren.

Anyway, I started blogging in 2007 because I know I love to share my ideas about parenting and marriage. Being me as a product of a broken family and grew up without a mother, I became a keen observer and I want to help fellow parents and couples as well. I may not be a professional adviser, but my experiences in life tell me that I can help somehow. In short, it has been my advocacy and monetary reasons was only the second.

But when I learned how to blog, I thought it would be better if I also sharing some blogging tips on my blog in which I learned some of them from you which makes you one of my unseen mentors.

This is why I am very thankful to you, especially when you choose me as a winner from Kevin Muldoon’s Blogging Tips dot com’s contest by sharing the best blogging tip last year.

The prize is very precious to me, as I am now of the few Filipino bloggers who own a Problogger book.

  • I started blogging several years ago – a personal blog with ramblings and musings. Later, I started a blog on writing, but it never really took off – probably because there are so many good ones out there already.

At several writing conferences, I found myself sharing the same information over and over again about promotions, publicity, marketing and PR. I decided to start a blog so I had one place to share it all. I really started Market My Novel to share information. I’m putting a lot more work into now, and would love to use it to sell a book about promotions. The blog went crazy when I switched it over to WordPress last month. The increase in hits has been amazing, and really gives me hope for growing this blog into a community.

I also blog for my fiction manuscripts. I won’t hesitate to self publish or ePublish, and use blogging to build a fan base, if the traditional publishing method doesn’t work for me.

  • I recently started blogging because i quit my job and i needed to lose weight. So to keep myself in focus. I blog about health and nutrition mostly, it keeps me going.

  • I started because I enjoyed writing, it is a wonderful outlet.

  • Blogging for me was a way to talk about gardening without boring my friends and family as much! The great thing was that like-minded bloggers popped in and gave me new ideas and fed my hobby/habit with stories of their own.

  • I started blogging accidentally, actually. I was emailing “deals” to friends and family and started getting bounce-backs and people saying, “when I forward this to my sister in Ohio the attachments aren’t there.” I decided to start a blog so people could come to me instead. Within months, I had huge traffic and subscribers. Just happened!

  • Well, it was very interesting change of heart for me. I originally started because I wanted to make an income from home and not have a regular day job. I thought that this would allow me the time to write a book or two in my spare time, but instead this has changed over time. I am doing a complete remake of my website to help other people in the same situation. The satisfaction of helping others has overwhelmed me and I just can’t stop thinking of new blog posts to do. Http://www.allmojo.com was my first blog and I hope to have many more to come. I hope to be as good as you one day in helping people and making a living at the same time. Thanks for the tips!

  • I loved keeping track of the great deals I was getting. It was a fun way to share.thanks

  • I’ve been designing websites probably since I was 16 and just within the past 3 years have I gotten into blogging. I have several hobbies some including retro gaming, collecting records, vintage guitars, etc. So yes I was one of those people to blog about something they are interested in however I usually always try to find a way to profit from it. It’s catchy!

  • It actually just started off as a way to document my craft projects – i used to write notes about each project and take pictures – and then it occurred to me, why not start a blog! Now, i make it a point to post a note on each project that I do together with pictures. A year later, I am more keen to look for ways to increase traffic and subscribers since I’ve put quite a lot of effort into building up content.

  • I started out blogging mainly because I wanted an outlet to improve my writing. It was something I always enjoyed and in order to be consistent I chose a subject I could easily relate write about – golf.

To this day I still enjoy the writing side of things but have found the marketing, social media and other associated tasks that come with blogging to be extremely satisfying and interesting.

  • I have not actually started my blog yet but…I have been home-schooling my kids for almost 20 years (I have actually graduated two of my kids, both college grads now, one with a Master’s degree). I KNOW I have a lot to offer others who are getting started, or need help with, home-schooling. I am trying to do things now so that when I get started I will already have an online presence and will be able to build a following and make some money, hopefully somewhat quickly (I am not thinking get-rich-quick by any means, however).

So my motivation is taking something I know a lot about and have been very successful at and sharing that with the hope of helping others while bringing in some income. (And since I’ve been a full-time mom for 25 years, just about anything would be pretty cool.)

  • Money is the biggest motivation, second is popularity… and seldom you meet people who blog because of passion.

  • I started blogging to establish myself as an authority in the given area that I blog about. This has worked beautifully, and I now inspire more people to go to my professional services site from my blog than Google can bring in.

  • I wanted to start writing about my hobbies and I wanted to be heard. Secondarily, I wanted to make a living.

Over a year later, I’ve done all these things, but none of them very well. I’ve written a lot, but not much recently. I get 20,000 visitors per month, but I’m not sure if they’re readers because I get almost no comments. I cleared $118 last month, which is hardly a living.

It’s better than having no blog.

  • I started blogging to write something different regarding to my business, i really love for blogging = hobby, make money, business from blog

  • I started Blogging as a Hobby…
    My Hobby…?? (Necessity)
I am a single, retired father of two young boys on a low income and my objective is to disprove the saying that (you can’t teach an old dog new tricks).
Because of that I have now become a student of Alex Jeffreys and Dean Holland and under their leadership hope that one day I will monetise my Blog.

I have just bought a new Domain name :
(http://for bloggersonly.com) and am looking for some direction for it.

    Cheers.

  • To keep track of my many creative and handmade projects and to share ideas and tips with family and friends, old and new, as I learn along the way. Everyone’s busy, so I thought if I learned something that I could pass along without someone else having to spend the time researching or testing something out, then it was worth it. I also wanted a “home” for my new greeting card business, http://www.simplygive.etsy.com

  • I started blogging as a way to deal with my feelings and experience of finishing cancer treatment.

I’ve found support from others and offered it as well. I’ve advocated and helped people advocate as well. It is a two way street and while I certainly am not at the level of a blog like yours it is a huge part of my heart.

  • I started my blog to share my knowledge of seo with other peoples. Now I love the response I got back.

  • ephman started his blog to help raise money to fight cancer. all the money he makes from advertising goes to charity. if you love running, anime, technology, top 10 lists, music, and events in nyc
    ephman.com
is a great blog. tons of symantic tech in it too! and the more pages you view the more ephman gives away to help fight melanoma cancer. :) so that’s the main reason ephman blogs. plus it’s fun.

  • Good question to initiate self-reflection and motivations.

I’ve always enjoyed writing. My education includes journalism, but I stink at that style, leaning more toward creative writing. I have a passion for tapping into consumer insights to push smarter marketing. And one day I got the bug, thinking I just wanted to get my thoughts and opinions ‘on paper’. Just for myself. It’s been about a year now, and I’ve enjoyed blogging immensely. I’ve had some talented folks help me with some design and tech pieces. And I’ve learned valuable lessons in circumspection. Say what’s on my mind, but be mindful of what I say.

  • Honestly, I first started my blog almost a year back just to make money with adsense and nothing else than that. But from then many things have changed in my opinions and now I blog for sharing tips and making money with it.

  • I started blogging to offer my tango students information about the dance so they could practice outside of class. That was in July. Since then, I’m amazed at my own growth with blogging and the readers that have found my site and asked for more content and interaction.

  • It all started as a sort of random-objective diary put out there as public.

I’ve always written but found blogging to have an exciting ‘edge’ to it.

As I grew older, I switched from Xanga to blogs aimed more toward serious/real writers. My topics have also evolved from mostly personal to objective.

Social media is great, but I still want to write a book.

  • I organize a Meetup in NYC called Becoming a Woman of Purpose. I started the blog to supplement the Meetup. But as more and more women from out of the area began joining, they cannot physically come to the gatherings, the blog is there for them to stay connected.

  • Darren,

I started blogging because I enjoyed writing, for fun, and to make connections. That was over five years ago. Since my first blog (which I still post to) I have authored or co-authored 10 blogs. Were they all started on a topic / niche I was interested in? Absolutely.

My motivation to blog has changed since I started blogging, in the sense that I am now monetizing (albeit slowly).

However, in a sense, my motivation for blogging has not changed. Or shall I say a lot of what originally motivated me to blog still motivates me today! I still blog because I enjoy writing, I enjoy sharing with others what I know, and I find blogging fun. I also find blogging fascinating, challenging and competitive. And I enjoy blogging because I love to help and to interact with my readers. I also love networking with other bloggers.

I’m blogging for many of the same reasons I did when I started five years ago, and I’m earning some money while doing so. How fortunate is that? Hopefully one day I’ll make a living at blogging, something I intend to make happen…

I still write about the same niches I chose to write about over five years ago, with a few exceptions. Because they are the things I have always been passionate about. Which is what makes this job so rewarding to me, and lacking in drudgery.

Not that blogging isn’t hard work. Bloggers work very HARD.
But I’m willing to work hard if it means working at a job I really enjoy.

On that fateful day almost five and a half years ago, when I stumbled upon blogging, I never realized all the benefits that would come from it. And I’m not just talking about monetary benefits. The benefits came before I even began monetizing, and these benefits still continue today…

I have found that while physical medicine keeps me in medications and therapies as long as my health insurance pays, it does little to adress the spiritual dimensions of our wounds.

Starting this blog allows me to help people not kill themselves because their PTSD is unbearable. Finding meaning in our suffering is important to staying alive.

The blog is young, a few months old, and I hope to create more content in terms of traditional and alternative spiritual healing traditions.

As my WordPress skills grow I hope to monetize the blog. Provide free information to those interested in healing PTSD’s soul damage, but also provide an income as my health declines and I await the next stroke.

So, to answer the question: First, I started blogging to fill the need of our fellow travellers who suffer from PTSD. Second, I hope to provide a useful free service and also pay for some of my own medical needs through the blog. Lastly, some of the blog material will be used for a book.

Thank You & Semper Pax, Dr. Z

  • There are two reasons I started blogging. Initially, I know I started blogging with the sole purpose of making money. But it was a niche blog, so I was making money from a niche I enjoyed writing about. But now, I blog with topics that I know will make me money, as well as a hobby blog to note my improvement in programming. I’ve taken a liking to blogging.

  • I started blogging because I moved to Shetland – a group of islands off mainland Britain with a population of 22,000 people, and everyone I knew and met asked me why?! I wanted to show people through ariticles, facts and tips what a fantastic lifestyle I have here and how vibrant the community is. I’ve had great feedback and what it may lead to I’m not sure, but really enjoyng the creativity of the whole process, and I feel really pasionate about what I do. I hope to earn some cash in the future, but for now I’m quite happy just blogging my activities and watching my site develop.

  • First of all, great article! I really enjoy your newsletters and I am very grateful that you find the time to share your experience!

I started my blog with one purpose- I needed to get ” my things” in order. I was doing too many things at once and I needed to channel the energy coming out of this into one place. I thought that organizing my hobbies and interest in one place would help me organize myself better, preserve the things I do and share them with people who might find them interesting.

Later, I found myself really enjoying the “educational” part of having your hobbies on your blog. Sharing with people something you know how to do in a easy and interesting way, so they can learn to do it too is still the most important reason for me to maintain the blog. There is no other thing like the satisfaction of sharing knowledge and be appreciated for it.

Some time after that came the other reasons- networking, monetizing, promoting myself, but all three are at a very early stage for me to be able to say how important are they for the growth of my blog.

  • Hi I have been blogging for about four months now and I started because the subject I am interested in (alternative health), is my hobby. I wanted to put down in writing what I had read. The hope was that perhaps I would be able to help someone with a health related problem.

  • Great question. I started blogging as a way to share ideas and to be an agent for positive change. In my heart is social activism through awareness, consciousness and compassion. As a Mental Health professional and student of consciousness for over 30 years, I feel I have ideas and perspective worth sharing.

I just posted my 900th post and it seems like the flow of inspiration is as strong as ever.

This blog has given back to me in wonderful ways also. I feel on purpose and more open to the widsom that flow through me.

Often times I am even inspired by what comes out of my fingers, checkout this recent post: http://www.explorelifeblog.com/journal/2009/9/6/four-life-lessons-to-make-our-world-a-better-place.html

  • I started blogging because I wanted to be of help to people. But I noticed that it is difficult to have traffic to the site. So I read up on how to do that and people just started offering me help in the form of what they’re selling but there were always something missing.

  • Started http://beatschindler.com to help people get more out of themselves and more out of life, to help destuckify people who are stuck, to stay connected with family in Europe, to share experience-based knowledge with anyone interested, to promote happiness, love and inner peace, and – over time – to make money blogging and continue to do what I love.

  • Originally it was as a way to keep a bike race team informed and give some luv back to our sponsors. Then it was a way to get a user community that I was trying to setup off the ground and get information about rides, races and trails in the area. So my blogs have sort of organically morphed into repositories of information about Cycling and Stuff to do with kids (http://www.kidzense.com)

  • I start blogging because it makes me feel better rather than bottling up things.

  • I start blogging arounds 5months ago,and just for hobby besides to generate income, blogging its really fun.

  • Funny to read this today. I actually started as result of an idea I had on my birthday three years ago (9/11) to make origami peace cranes and leave them in public places. I would take photos of them and write about peace oriented topics and post them on my blog. I knew nothing about blogging, but I loved the feeling of writing and putting it all “out there”.

From there, I started another one about “untraditonal” mothering, a couple others that didn’t really go anywhere, and now it’s mostly my professioanl blog about shiatsu and hlistic health.

  • I started blogging because we changed the website of the association I am currently president of and decided to go for a blog because it is more interactive (shouldn’t an association be willing to generate interaction?) and also easier to manage (we don’t need a webmaster anymore).

I am now studying and reading and thinking a lot because I’d love to launch my own blog sharing knowledge and writing about my job and business (management consulting).

In this specific case if the question is “Why would you start blogging?” the answers are:
    a) because thanks to PWA’s blog I discovered that I enjoy writing a blog
    b) because I want to grow my profile as an experienced and reliable consultant
Thanks for all the tips and great thoughts, they help a lot beginners like me!

  • Blogging is a passion, a kind of Kerouac-like On The Screen so to speak thang. I live in Germany and cultural and global perspective to me can only be done via internet.
So I started a blog about my love for basketball. I cover my home town of Phoenix Hagen, the German national hoops as well as news, stats and trivia from NBA and NCAA. I hope to reach out to some US bloggers and learn from their craft. The free communication and media levels there are awesome and inspiring. Keep it blog ;)

  • I started blogging because of my passion for writing and never in my wildest dream would I see that it has grown to the industry that we now know of :)

  • I started blogging the first time to show what I was doing online to make money, and to help others. I think that was a mistake, because my blog became bogged down with a lot of information, and no real personality.

I started a new blog just a few months ago. I started this one to also show others what I am doing online, but now, I focus a little on networking, and giving a little glimpse into the life that I lead on my way from welfare to wealth. I try my best to break up the information that I know people will need with little tidbits of my life. Its a little difficult, because I’m not used to sharing with so many people. But I know that its better than solely being information, because the number of readers to this blog have surpassed the other almost immediately.

I plan to buy the “31 days to a better blog” soon, but for now I will continue to follow this blog. It has really given me great insight on what I should do in order to have a truly effective blog.

  • to tell the truth, i could go on about how i had this message to get out to the world, but it’s not really, honestly the case…

i started blogging because i have a strong obsessive streak, and it just so happened that i discovered blogging around the same time my other obsessions were waning.

i keep blogging because of the diverse skills needed keeps me on my toes.

  • i blog because i want to make money from it. I know many people has a skeptic view about making money from blogging, but i want to prove that it’s so worth it to make money from blog, although it’s not easy….

  • It was somewhat of an impulse. I did have a free webpage hosting and they went down. I wanted to have something else so I tried a blog. The first try was in English and even though I read a lot English it was really hard so I started one in Norwegian a few months ago.

I want to write about things that interests me, and that I can’t find much information about. If it turns into something I can earn money from later, that is just great.

  • It all began when I decided to learn a new topic in a field of design and and started to collect useful info.

After a whileI’ve realised that the amount of unorganised info I’ve collected became impossible to use, and that I could find nothing in these lists.

I’ve decided to create a blog where I would put the important pieces of that info so it would be easy for me to find in one place and that it might help other people too in someway.

With some experience came the will to share the knowledge with others.

  • i started blogging just to show my feeings that i couldn’t said it out and share my life to friends which had no longer seen since we aparted.

  • Hey, fantastic article! Its always great to see someone spend time writing a qualitypost.,

  • i started blogging to share my thoughts about romance. I want to create a more romantic world.
