Your motivation came at just the right time for me. I've been working on my blog non-stop for 2 weeks, but I get down on myself when I don't see subscribers adding up. Thankfully, I don't have a wife or kids or I'd go crazy! I write well and have expertise in the area I'm blogging about, so I love the combination. Like yourself, a friend of mine found my blog and emailed me: "Your passion really inspires me :) I am glad to know you." wow i was seriously inspired by the things you said in this post. Im one of your new readers as of last week. I have heard about your books, but haven’t had a chance to check them out. I have a serious problem tho and that is im not a compelling writer. It maybe due to my vocabulary not being as large as yours is, but who knows. I just started blogging about 3 months ago. Im getting alot of useful info about how to blog to capture my audience, get traffic….etc keep up the good work and maybe i will be as good as you are one day…. thanks your friend Todd….. no homo lol

My blogging philosophy has always been that I am my own very audience of one. I keep plugging away and know that at least *I* am reading me.

But on a serious note, you have to blog because you love to blog. These days, too many folks are littering the Blue Nowhere with obvious attempts at making a quick buck or receiving mountains of freebies to review. It is quite sad, really, because they are missing the point.

Hey Josh,

Thanks so much for posting an encouraging blog. I started mine a week ago (tomorrow). I was terrified but I plunged in and am finding my way. It is set up more along the lines of a book of poetry, but I am finding that I might have to upgrade to WordPress for it to have the visual & structural effect I want. Thanks again for the post.

Before I became a blogger I didn’t see what the all the fuss was about. Then I learned how fun it could be and loved voicing my opinion to others. As long as you conitnue to write quality content your making progress. Blogging can never die if we write about topics that move us and are important to us.

Josh, Thank you for this post. I wish I had started blogging years ago because I need — I crave — creative outlets. I used to draw and write on the side but they didn’t fully satisfy me; what I was missing was the audience response and the ability to create a community. I can’t believe how many opportunities people are giving me — and I’ve only been at this for 2 months — just because I am enthusiastic about my blog.

Josh- You deserve the compliments from what I can see. I plan to go to your blog after I write this, but I am glad to know that there are people out there who don’t feel the need to fit into one niche.
I have so many diverse interests – I chose to start my very first blog last month and so far it is slow, but that is ok, because I am on a journey for myself first and foremost, secondary are the benefits others may get from sharing in my experiences and thoughts.
Darren’s posts and book first inspired me to give this a try and you have affirmed that which some bloggers forget- blogging should be fun. We are making connnections and that can be very rewarding in and of itself. Monetary gain would simply be a bonus.
Thank you for this inspiration & encouragement to march to the beat of our individual drum!

Thank you everyone, your comments have been wonderful and generous and I’m glad you’ve found something to like in the post. In the interest of full disclosure, I did want to point out that I don’t make much money from my blog. I have a couple of affiliate programs in the sidebar that are products written by friends. They bring in a sell here and there and I do a little business with Amazon affiliates.

The point: my focus on one billion niches is definitely costing me, monetarily speaking. My bounce rate shows it, too. But that’s okay with me, because the core readers I have are very loyal and we have real relationships. But monetizing the blog was never really my goal. I’ve turned out so far to be good at traffic building and less-good at making money. So absolutely, write what you’re passionate about, have a good time, but if you’re trying to make money with your blog, listen to Darren, not me!

I’m having so much fun blogging that I’m not making any money. Again, that’s okay with me, but if you choose to get crazy and scattershot, just make sure it’s okay with you too!

Wow Josh! This is my first run in with you and dang, am I smiling because of it! I have such a focused niche that sometimes I feel like I don’t have enough varied info to share with my readers. After hearing your pep talk, I’m beginning to realize that if I can’t write about what rings my bell, then why bother.
