How to Grow Your Authority – Essential Reading for Bloggers

Posted By Darren Rowse 5th of August 2009 Miscellaneous Blog Tips 0 Comments

authority-rules.gif Authority …. some people have it…. some people don’t. But why?

I recently spoke at a small gathering of new bloggers about some of the basics of blogging and at the start of the session asked those in attendance about their motivations for starting their blogs.

Of the 10 or so people there – 8 told me that they were hoping that their blogs would help grow their profile and authority on the topics that they were blogging about.

While not every blogger will share this motivation – I’d bet that for many it’s high on the list of priorities that we have.

So how does one grow Authority?

Brian Clark from CopyBlogger has just release a free report that I think makes essential reading on this topic. It’s called Authority Rules.

It outlines 10 elements (or rules) of creating authority and I think it’s very very good. In many ways what it contains is the framework for building a great blog – please read it.

It’s truly free because you don’t have to sign up for it and he’s not up-selling to anything – it’s just great information that you can access either by downloading the report as a pdf or reading the whole thing on a series of webpages in html.

Check out the table of contents here and take a little time today to read through it.

Do yourself a favor and read Authority Rules.

  2. On my way! Thanks for the link :)

  3. I’m a big fan of most things Brian does, and if you’ve given it your seal I can’t wait to digest it.

    Thanks for the heads up.

  4. I think most bloggers would want to grow their profiles in their specific area, but it is supplying valuable information that people want to read that builds on reader numbers. I will def be taking advantage of reading the report though! Thanks!

  5. Thanks for the kind information.

  6. got lots of free time today [woke up early :D], so will read it in full, thanks for sharing.

  7. Thanks for the link… it is great pleasure to be following your blog !!

  8. Thank you Darren!

    Great resource

  9. This was an absolutely fantastic read!

Since I started only a short while ago, I’ve cut out all blogging “advice”, except for ProBlogger & CopyBlogger.

In fact, when people ask me how to get started blogging, I simply tell them to subscribe to these two sites and read every post!

    Rock on!

  10. Thanks for the great info! I will definitely download.

  11. Really an excellent Guide I would say.

I’m following copyblogger myself, You two construct a really great team if you work together..

    Good luck

  12. Thanks Darren for the resource link. I hope to learn a lot from Brian Experience.

  13. Nice one Darren, thanks a ton for sharing the link. Always a pleasure to visit your site.

  14. Definitively a a bookmark to consult CopyBlogger’s cornerstone content. A bit short to my liking since I expected everything to be in the eBook (rather than link to external content).

  15. I’ve just finished reading this free report from Brian and I’d say it was completely amazing. Plus I was thrilled that no pesky newsletter sign-up was required to view the whole thing :)

  16. Definitely going to be reading it today.
    Brian always delivers high value.

  17. Authority is currency in the blog world. I’ve downloaded my report.

  18. Something to think about – it can take years to build a reputation, but you can lose it in an instant.

Make sure to carefully guard your reputation and authority as a blogger.

  19. No upselling? Great. I will definitely download. It’s a breath of fresh air now when you find something that someone isn’t trying to sell. Will be download in just a second…

  20. Thanks for directing me to this information. I am the owner of three blogs and each was started for a different reason.

My personal finance blog (linked in my name above) was started to document my journey as I paid off over $90,000 of consumer debt. (i have accomplished this task).

My second blog was created out of my love of camping. Its basically a blog that I can share my camping trips with friends and family but it does make a little money with adsense, and amazon associate links…

My third blog is a leadership blog I created specifically to build up my presence in the leadership community. I hope that one day I will be able to branch out as a leadership consultant and use my leadership website as a platform from which to launch!

  21. Thanks for the information! I’ll check out Authority Rules. :)

    Hi Darren,

Thanks for posting this report. I just finishing going over it and it has tons of great information. This report reaffirms some of my ideas as well as some new ones in growing my web site. I hope to convert my shtml web site to a blog very soon and this report as well as your 31BBB series will be quite helpful at promoting it. Thanks again!

  26. Thank you so much for this free report!
I need some instructions to improve the performance of my blog because I have no plan what should be presented on it.

  27. thanks darren , but i have downloaded several hundreds of e-books to the point that i had my hard drive with all sorts of meaningless content that only tell me to , bookmark my blog pages , and build backlinks from article sites. I am so desperate that i am planning on quitting this trade . Please help me out.

  28. Sincerely, I wanna have one! =p

  29. It is truly amazing that reports of great value are been given away these days. The trend is shifting and this is going to put many marketers out of business.

  30. Darren, thanks so much for the mention. Glad you found value in it.

  31. Thanks a bunchy for the recommendation. I just put up nadineblogs.com after changing my twitter name, and can’t wait to read this along with everyrhing I have learned from people like yourself and John Chow…thanks again. Can’t wait to read it.

  36. Thank you Darren for the link to Brians’ report.
Lots of wonderful information that can be put into action immediately.
On of the suggested links he had listed lead to a post that confirmed an idea I have been playing with. If Brian says it works then I will keep moving along with it.
Thank you again & thanks to Brian for writing and sharing his great insight.

  37. Everyone seems to love his work.

  38. nice news i found, thanks

  39. Hi Darren, why your feed subscriber is decreasing? Last day I saw it at 120k, but now it decreased to 115k.

  40. This is awesome.. checking the site now.

  41. Yes I am just coming from Jeremy (Shoemoney) blog and he also post similar to this. So I download from there and its really nice reading and gave me new reason to think about it.

  42. Brian has done an excellent job here. Just download it without signing up, where does that happen nowadays?

  43. Thank you for providing this information. I have not been following Copyblogger (but now have the RSS feed going in Thunderbird!) and I would not have otherwise found this information.

What was great was that for me, I found this very affirming. I am (for the third time) just starting my blog out and have quit twice because I felt that because there was nobody else out there like me, there was no demand for what I’m offering. I blog about marriage and take a very traditional approach — not your typical modern woman!

I am encouraged that this simply gives me an opportunity to build my brand and brand authority on the content that I am writing. I am sure that everything else will follow along behind it as I continue forward.

    Thank you!

  44. authority is very important thing, but is surely not essential and everything comes with time.

  45. Awesome. I will be looking forword to this series :D
Thanks, Darrenl. Your blog is a great example of answering questions. It has stimulated quite a few comments too…
