Darren, you hit the nail on the head here. I think of all the people that go crazy on the sidebar widgets and social networking buttons and services that most people never use. THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting this. I personally can’t stand a cluttered sidebar. I’ve learned that if you keep it clean, people will pay more attention to the ads and links that are there.

My sidebars are probably a bit crowded, but it’s a balance between having functionality that I want vs. too much stuff.

Thinking on the same lines! The bigger pain is when you use “Free themes” available on the net, you have to edit it and make it readable and understandable.

The sidebar will drive you crazy if you mess with it too much. Before you know it, you’ll be spending all of your time tweaking your design instead of developing killer content.

I think that money saving / frugal blogs tend to have more widgets etc. on the sidebars, as there are so many great money saving widgets and links out there. I don’t really see a problem with this, especially if all of them help readers save money or make money online. For example, the ones on our site are designed to help our readers save money or make money online, so I hesitate to remove any of them!

Ok…
But I was actually waiting for you to say WHICH stuff is ‘defunct’ in your sidebar…
Maybe we should have a poll on which is ‘in’ and which is ‘out’ – like a ‘top ten fashion tips’ for your blog?
I’d say:
IN – RSS/Subscribe, Featured Posts List and Recent Articles
Definitely OUT – tag clouds, twitter updates, archives and blog rolls

The easiest way I’ve found to clean out my sock drawer/widget is to watch statistics for a few weeks. When you realize no one is clicking on anything or you’re not wearing certain socks it’s time to toss them in the trash.

Why put unused socks in the sock draw in the first place. One can just throw it out. So instead of cleaning sidebars once in 6 months, I do it every month. For blogs not constantly monitored, this is a gr8 advice. But frankly it did not strike a chord with my case :)

Hi Darren,
You are right..I hate a messy sidebar and I am trying to hard to keep it down. Hope I continue that in the long run too….:)
On a completely different note, I would appreciate if you could help with a problem I am trying to solve for a long time now.
My Feed for the site is http://feeds2.feedburner.com/ChefInYou
Whatever I do, I am not able to bring a picture in the post to show on the feed. Few of my readers insisted that it would be great if I could add at least one picture of my post in my feed. I am not able to make feedburner display a pic at all – it shows only text and I have a picture right in the beginning of my post.
I ask you this, since you are in the blogging space, you might know of few ppl like me who faced this issue.
I sincerely appreciate any time and effort from you end. Thank you…

Darren, you do such a great job with your videos and your sites. And you’re just an all-around nice guy who produces such helpful content for the rest of us. Just wanted to say ‘thanks’ and I’m always happy to point people in your direction. Lisa

Thanks for the advice, it is funny because I was thinking of a way to clean up my site. So what I will start with is my sidebar. I’m thinking of making some simple navigation through my site so it is easy for the readers. Thanks Again!

Yes Great Video as long as you are a blogger because my Brother heard this and he asked me what the hell are you looking at that crazy man for.But its something we All have to think about we should at least make these gadgets a new window</A If we want to keep them.

The sock drawer is a good analogy for this. We do a lot of revisions of our clients old websites, and there is always a lot of “dead” technology, broken links and outmoded information in their sidebars.

Hi, this is really a cool tip. I’ve been wanting to clean up my sidebar for ages but haven’t done so. One thing that stops me from doing that is I’ve to get a new template (that’s fine), and chances are, I might have to do all my widgets again. (I’m using Blogger.com)
I’ll try cleaning it up this weekend.
Thanks for the great tip.
