Great points in this post. I take criticism well and use it to improve my blog. Listening to the reader is important because you want to draw them in and do everything possible to keep them interested. I believe a negative comment is better than no comment because it tells me what I need to change about my blog.

I love the tip on not "mud-slinging". It is absilutely crucial for(especially for new bloggers) to develop a professional attitude about these kinds of people. Deal with it!! However, you shouldn't ignore it. Try to figure out why they are dissatisfied. If one person speaks out about it. There are probably more who share these opinions but decide to keep them to themselves. Try to find out how to correct your alleged mistake.

Your ex-reader is poor and unfortunate.

I was also replying angry readers/bloggers, but now I just ignore it. Makes me feel better and I forget I ever got the stupid email or comment.

Thank you for addressing the issue of angry bloggers. I have not personally had trouble with "mean comment" blogging-but I did get a special "gift" from a facebooker tonight. She kept her message private-but as a total stranger, very critical. I chose to tell her to goodbye and took her off my list of friends. (I had only added her because she lives in the same area as my family abroad). I believe that some folks just have nothing better to do, than try and get your attention-good or bad.

I have read references to your blog in two blogs which I rated quite well. Finally I descended on Probloggers today.
First thing I discovered is that a post need not be 400-800 words long as I have been told. I will be criss-crossing your blog again.

Constructive criticism is the best remedy. in identifying the problem, one is that much closer to resolution. thin internet is a harsh environment and one cannot take things too seriously.life is to short.

Listening and learning from negative feedback is one if not the best way to get better at something. If anything it gives you an idea on how people or some people are taking what sort of content you serve up to them. This is why I believe it is so important to ask questions within your posts and provide easy communication lines to you. Loosing a few along they way just may be part of you and your blogs evolution.

Excellent work here thanks.

Incidents like the one you've described make and break reputations, show true character. Yours is already well established as one of intregrity.

The other person is now making nothing but a bad reputation for him/herself. In the long run, readers flock to the honest people, not those who try to tear down the reputation of another.

It is blogging politics, yes?

Darren,
That's very good advice and the beauty about it is that it's relevant to other aspects of life. No one likes to be criticized, but if we step back from the criticism and be objective, often we will finds ways to improve and become better. One of the things I struggle with constantly is not to take things personally. I also liked number 5 to acknowledge reader life cycle and the subpoints because it reminded me of a situation where I had a coach and I stopped using her because she took me as fas as she was capable. I needed someone who was more adavanced. And just as with blogs, if they do not evolve you can lose readers because they need more than the blog offers.

Thank you for your post.

Its really quite astonishing when people are so jealous of you that they stoop to such a low level. Trust me doing such things like copying content and then not acknowledging and trying to degrade others is something which will not lead to anything postive for anyone.

I totally don't think you should do what Jest is saying to do. Then you will go to the level of the others, plus why spend more bad energy. This is why things happen in the first place.

Thank you for sharing this issue. And I think I have the answer for my question which I tweeted to you earlier (you may not noticed though since it may be buried somewhere).

It's not easy to accept harsh criticism, whatever the motive it may be, either good or bad it will affect that particular person for sure. How to deal with people's dissatisfaction about our work is a huge lesson as well. I think this post has given us comfort, and reminds us there are more important matters to deal with as well, while turning negativity into a force that makes us better, and productive. May we have the rationality to deal with whatever challenges may come.

Hi Darren,

Love this advice. I am new to the blogging community and have taken your advice to heart. I can see how it would be easy to become depressed or discouraged about blogging by a few negative comments.
I loved your #5 about having a reader lifecycle and discovering that actually the readers changed and became more advanced, much in part to your blog.

Excellent post again. I gain knowledge from each post.

Thanks.

I don't get upset when people stop reading my blog as at the moment my readership[ is still rising.

I actually encourage criticism on my blog.
