Create a Sneeze Page for Your Blog [Day 18 - 31DBBB]

Miscellaneous Blog Tips 142 comments

Today’s task is to create a Sneeze Page for your blog.

What is a Sneeze Page?

The term ’sneeze page’ is one that I came up with for the 2007 version of the 31 Days to Build a Better blog and is a concept that I’ve been using as a key strategy in my blogs for quite a few years.

The idea is simple – to create a page that propels people in different directions deep within your blog by highlighting a variety of posts that you’ve previously written.

Why a Sneeze Page?

The challenge that many bloggers face is that over time the archives of their blogs fill up with hundreds and then thousands of posts. The problem is that by default a blog generally only highlights the most recent posts that you’ve written on the front page while the majority of your posts go largely unnoticed once they drop off the front page.

A sneeze page is all about showing off those archives.

Benefits of Sneeze Pages

There are a variety of reasons that a sneeze page can be powerful:

1. It shows off your archives - I don’t know about you but when I spend hours (if not days) crafting a blog post, I want people to read it! Sneeze pages lengthen the time that people interact with your older posts.

2. It’s great for SEO - search engines not only look at the links that other people make to your posts in order to give them ranking but the internal links on your blog. Linking to old posts can help them grow their search engine ranking.

3. It can help create a ‘Sticky’ Blog - I’ve not seen stats on this but it is my suspicion that a person arriving on your blog for the first time increases the chances of coming back to it the more great posts that they view on it. Get someone to read 10 great posts that you’ve written previously instead of 1 and you’ll exponentially increase the likelihood that they’ll subscribe and become a regular reader.

Types of Sneeze Pages (with Examples)

There are many ways of creating a ’sneeze page (or post)’ for your blog. Lets explore some:

Themed Sneeze Pages - these are posts or pages on your blog or site that revolve around a single theme. For example here on ProBlogger I have created sneeze pages around some of the main themes for this blog such as:

These sneeze pages (and others) are linked to prominently around my blog – including the ‘best of ProBlogger’ section of my front page.

Similarly – on DPS I’ve created pages for key topics (like Composition Tips, Digital Photography Techniques, Portrait Photography Tips, How to Photograph and Digital Photography Tips for Beginners) and link to them from navigation areas. I find these pages generate a lot of page views both themselves and the pages that they link to.

One more example that steps away from some of the posts that are purely lists of links is 21 Settings, Techniques and Rules all New Camera Owners Should Know – this post is still a list of links but it is written more as a post with pictures and descriptions of the points made in each of the posts linked to. While the examples above are all ‘pages’ in WordPress and didn’t ever appear as posts this last example just appeared as a normal post on my blog.

Time Related Sneeze Pages – these pages are based around a defined period of time. They are usually a ‘best of’ post that highlight your key posts from that period to either remind readers of previous posts that they might want to revisit or to highlight posts that they might have missed.

The period of time that you choose can really be anything from a year (here’s my best of 2006 at ProBlogger post) through to a month, week or even a weekend (ie a post that summarizes the posts from a weekend that those readers who don’t read your blog on a weekend might have missed). Blogs that have a particularly high frequency of posting often use these quite regularly (for example Lifehacker would often do one at the end of each week to highlight key posts for that week out of the many that they’d published.

Retro Sneeze Pages – Another variation of this ‘time related’ sneeze page is to do one that unashamedly shows off a number of posts from your blog from a particular point in its history. The most common way to do this is to do a post highlighting posts from the blog from a year ago. LifeHacker was another blog that did (and still occasionally does) this (example).

Series Sneeze Pages – many bloggers use the technique of writing a series of blog posts that allow them to explore a topic over a period of time with lots of interlinked posts.

One key with writing a series of posts is to make sure that readers have a trail of links between posts so that they’ll not only read one but the full series.

A great way to help readers discover a full series is to develop a sneeze page. All of the posts in the series should link back to it and it links to them.

Series Sneeze pages can become key pages on your blog. For example here on ProBlogger one of my most popular pages is Blogging for Beginners which started out simply as a list of posts from a series I was writing specifically for beginners.

Promote Your Sneeze Page

Sneeze pages can be an effective way of driving people deep within your blog – but they’ll only do that for as long as you’re able to drive people to the sneeze page itself.

As a result – a sneeze page is something that you’ll want to promote and position prominently on your blog in a place that people will continue to see it. Do this by linking to your sneeze page from navigation menus, sidebars or other ‘hot zones’ on your blog.

Create a Sneeze Page and Share it With Us

OK – it’s time to go create a sneeze page for your blog. Once you’ve done it please do come back and share a link to it in the comments below as I’m sure there are a lot of creative ways to use these types of pages that we could all learn from by sharing them.

  • Ohh, I’m right on top of this one, that will be my post for the weekend.

Although making a sneeze page with a small archive of just two months worth of blogging will be a challenge.

I’m really enjoying this challenge, keep up the good posts Darren!

  • This really is a must have for any blog. Many times…Google searchers and fly by night readers have no clue how to navigate and find information on blogs. Having pages like this greatly increase the chances that readers will find more of your quality content and turn into long time readers.

  • Great idea Darren, I created this sneeze page a while ago for a series I wrote.

    http://back-links.org/11-things-to-consider-before-you-start-blogging/

    Hope you like it.

  • This is a really fantastic idea, however is harder for new bloggers to do!

Instead I’m going to focus on building a twitter welcome page. Rather than just sending Twitter people to my home page, I’m going to send them to their own special page with my best work!

  • I totally agree with you. For instance, I’ve done it for an article about 5 ways to safeguard its Firefox profile.

Another thing to promote old posts is the creation of an archives pages or a best of articles block in the sidebar.

    Thanks for your tips !

  • Wow. This post comes at a great time. I have been contemplating creating this kind of grouping for a series of articles I am writing on my blog.

It’s not done yet but I’ll come back and post a link. Can you suggest if a Wordpress page or post works best for this? and why?

  • Been meaning to do this for a while, thanks for inspiring me Darren.

  • Wow, glad I logged onto Twitter just as you tweeted this :P. This is a great idea. I thought about doing something like this but wasn’t quite sure on how to actually approach it. Great post and great idea. I especially like the time related ones. A best of this month, or that year type of thing could be really effective.

One way I thought about getting more traffic to older posts would be in using blog comments too. I think that if a person is commenting on a dofollow blog of fair to high popularity, and leaves a good post with the “website” section linking to an older post, they may get some more hits to it :P. Great post though, love it.

  • Great idea. I love coming across these pages, especially when I visit a new blog for the first time. It’s a great way to get a feel for the topics that the blogger covers regularly. Even if I am not interested in everything a blogger is posting, knowing that there will still be plenty of material I am interested makes me 10x more likely to subscribe.

I think it also gives bloggers a way to come up with post ideas if they are stuck in a rut. We can look back at our splash page and very quickly and easily find topics that we haven’t posted on in a while, or would like to expand on.

I’ll get started on this task this weekend, at the latest. My blogs are both fairly new, so it shouldn’t be a hard task.:) Great tip. Thanks, Darren.

  • As promised, here is my sneeze page for an ongoing blog series. It was a big quickly hacked out for this purpose but I will improve it soon. Do let me know if you think it works.

    http://sidekickblog.com/how-to-modify-the-mimbo-30-theme-285.htm

I decided to go with a post for the sneeze page.

  • This is a cool idea I’m only just starting out but am already worrying about content getting lost!

I think related post plugins like yarrp helps with this too, but a sum of page of most popular pages would work really well for me too

    thanks

  • Thanks Darren for a great tip. My own blog is just an infant at present, so this is not something that would be particularly useful right now. But I’ll definitely file it away as a good idea to consider further down the track!

  • I’ll have to look into this. It sounds like something that will keep people around on the blog.

  • just did that where i listed my most googled tips in previous months

    http://www.tipsgoda.com/2009/04/top-20-most-googled-posts-from-tipsgoda.html

  • I’m not quite sure this is prominent on my blog, but it is under my Pages header on the left sidebar and is across the top of my header. I call it Best of Cardiogirl.

    http://www.cardiogirl.net/?page_id=1099

  • I’ve made special page for Twitter followers http://www.rolandinsh.lv/blog/twt/ and You’re right I’ll need to meke some All-in-one info page

  • Hehe, you brought back memories of childhood – sneezing while eating a lamington was one of the funniest things there was!

Another type of sneeze page is one you create in response to being featured in the media or on a large web site. You can quickly create a post welcoming those new readers, and pointing off to key posts on your blog that may interest visitors from that particular source.

I recently did a page like that when I was interviewed for an article in our local newspaper:

    http://green-change.com/2009/03/18/welcome-illawarra-mercury-readers/

  • This makes perfect sense especially as archives grow…
I have seen the sneeze effect used extremely well at the NY Times and at problogger too.
I will keep this in mind as I develop more material for my currently small blog. The challenge for me now is to keep adding to my few blogs.
Thank you for running this fabulous workshop. Everyday, I check in to see what else you have up your sleeve Darren.

  • This is great Darren,
I have gone ahead and I am creating one right this second. It will be one looking at my posts from a year ago.
My blog has changed domains twice since then so it will be really interesting to look at

    http://www.ryanmclean.net/one-year-ago

Thanks for the opportunity to link to it.

  • Darrin, I love the tabbed approach that you’re using on the home page of ProBlogger. It elegantly meets the needs of different reader segments – beginners, people who want to catch up with the best of PB over different time segments, and people who want the very best of your blog’s content (”all time” and “Darrin’s favs”). I assume this was custom coded – or is it a WP plug-in? It would be awesome if such a plug-in did exist.

How much maintenance does this require on the PB blog? Do you invest some time at the end of each month hand-picking the posts for the “this month” tab? Or does it automatically pick the posts with the greatest number of views?

    Here’s my “articles” sneeze page:

    http://mindmappingsoftwareblog.com/articles/

  • Nice post Darren, this is something that a lot of people miss, and to be honest I am haven’t deliberately done a sneeze post on my blog in a few months. I’ll put my hand up and say that I hadn’t even thought about listing relevant posts from a series onto a single page, but this would be a lot more user friendly that just the categories. Thanks!

  • I must admit I’d never before heard about sneeze pages, but I like the idea, and immediately gave it a try. I created a sneeze page for people who are starting out to use Google Adsense: http://www.icantinternet.org/2009/04/adsense-articles-for-everyone/

  • This is a great idea! I had noticed that you do that on one of your blog posts I was reading and then found that I’d spent the next 20 minutes on problogger.com.

    Here’s my attempt.

    http://thebetterleader.blogspot.com/2009/04/do-we-need-presentations.html

  • Been looking at the sneeze pages you mentioned. They are pretty good.
I will definately be creating more sneeze pages for my blog in the future.
Brilliant way to remember the gold ol’ days and to give out some great information also

  • Ok, mine’s up. This was a useful exercise – making me realise how much I had covered this topic. I’m sure there are many others I could do – http://getpaidtowriteonline.com/the-joy-of-blogging/

  • Great idea! Who knew? How about a look back of your personal favorites over the first 6 months, or each year? Stay tuned!

  • I’m thinking that a sneeze page every 50 posts will be a good idea, that way I can recap what I’ve done and also update any older sneeze pages.

  • Some time ago I created a “How to use this blog” page, that is part of my main menu. This page features some specific articles to let the new reader know how to make his way through our archives. I may give it a twist and update it some “top read” posts or series.

During last year I did something similar to Lifehacker by creating a “flashback” post every Friday highlighting the posts from the past week for the last 4 years. I noticed no one read it, so I decided to use that time for other things.

I use to receive many questions at my Contact Form from lazy readers unwilling to dive in the archives or use the Search box, that gives me the chance to bring up old posts from the archives my self by publishing their questions and linking to those old entries. But I;m not sure that’s a sneeze page or post. Is it?

    Have a good day…

  • This is an excellent idea. I’ve written sneeze pages (although I didn’t know they were called that) for two series that I write – “Get Your Creative Groove On” and “How to Be an Innovator.” The links appear at the top of my blog. However, I’m not doing much to promote them right now, so I’ve written a “sticky” post that will promote these series and stay at the top of my blog. I feel like the post is too long, and maybe I should cut out one or two of the series I have listed. You can view it here. I’d appreciate any feedback!

  • This is an awesome tactic. I started something of a sneeze page a few months back where I list exclusive content that I had created for the blog.
    http://www.reignofthegirlchild.com/2007/01/fgg-real-deal-workshops.html

This “Reign Exclusives” page is listed on the Nav bar so it’s easy to find.. Right now it contains only interviews and some workshop information but you’ve given me some ideas on how I could expand it even more by adding other categories.

    Great advice!

  • I created a sneeze for the Top 25 Ways I Save Money at at http://www.howisavemoney.net/save-money/25-ways-i-save-money-the-full-list/

This allows my readers to go back to each of the five posts I wrote on that topic and read all of the top money saving tips in one place.

  • Thank you for this incredible idea! It is a simple way of growing your blog that most bloggers won’t take the time to do. It also proves you are a professional.

I will use this idea when I gain more archives.

    Dugg it!
    Bookmarked it!
    Sphunn it!

    Thanks!

  • I have actually done this before and agree that it’s a great way to show off those past posts. Thanks for the reminder to revisit this technique. I recently added the Organize Series plugin and like that so far (you will see it in action on my college guide sneeze post below).

  • Ahhchooo, Bless you.
Ok enough of that. A sneeze page hey.

Well I suppose that this really works well if you have a lot of historical posts.

What do you think is the minimum posts to have for a sneeze page to be viable. Or is it just that you want to point people to old topics.

Of to my blog to see what sneeze pages I can create

    Thanks

  • Well, Darren, I’ve written something that looks like a combo of “link post”, “list post” and “sneeze post”.

    Need your opinion on that.

    How to Find an Internship
    http://www.aarknet.org/blog/how-to-find-an-internship-206

  • im working on it, thanks for the tips Darren !

  • You just stumped me! I have been up to date with every project till now: http://www.se7en.org.za/2009/04/23/se7en-and-probloggers-31-dbbb-part-3

I wrote a post on a reader question after task 16 and more than doubled my usual comments!!! Great Task!!! (http://www.se7en.org.za/2009/04/22/se7en-reasons-why-children-dont-play-anymore)

I know I really need to do this and make a sneeze page, it just seems a little overwhelming to get started… I will have to ponder on it!

  • I often wondered how to promote old blog posts and never even thought about implementing this ideaa. Thanks once again!

  • Good Info sir. by the way will related articles (automatically generated) be considered as sneeze pages as well? or should we really create a link inside the post itself.

  • I have a list on my sidebar called “Behind Pink Ink” which highlights some posts that I feel give more insight to myself.

I also have a “news” button that I update regularly which lists and links to interesting things I have done.

I love blogger’s new linkwithin gadget. I can link to related posts automatically and it unburies some old stuff even I have forgotten about! I have this at the end of each post.

  • Another wonderful suggestion for all of us – no matter what level blogger we are.

As a new blogger, I don’t have very many posts yet, but I do have enough that I am already worrying about some of my early posts traveling off into oblivion. This will be a great way for me to continue to give these posts some exposure.

As a student, I rarely thanked my teachers for giving me homework, but in this case . . . thanks for the homework!

  • Here’s my sneeze page, linked from every page within the site:

    http://www.mikeslife.org/content/useful-resource-posts-new-bloggers

  • Since I run a popular science blog, a lot of my posts are what you would call evergreen and can be used as a reference in newer articles. And that’s primarily how I use them.

However, I did try to create something sneeze-page like in the side-bar. Calling my categories “topics” and going to a template that shows them as a list, I’m trying to encourage people to burrow deeper into my blog and spend some time exploring posts on topics they care about.

  • Great ideal. I’ll have to create some today.

  • Excellent refresher on the sneeze page concept. Ever since I read your original article a year ago, I have been using this technique with great success!

Here I used it to make a complete guide to craps:

    http://news.silveroakcasino.com/craps-strategy/

There are 15 articles in all (craps is a complicated game!) and using the sneeze page I was able to bring them all together in a series format which makes all of the articles way more accessible. It also allows me to give suggestions for which order the user should read the articles in- very useful!

  • This is an awesome post. Squeeze pages are definitely great for driving up your pageviews. It is difficult to get them ranked high in search engines unless you can get a lot of links back to it.

What I have done is just linked to my squeeze pages throughout my articles so that the search engines can constantly find them when the spiders come. It usually tells the search engines that these pages are important. Just don’t over do it because it will look like Spam.

  • Hi,

One way to do this is one that I have used:
Present some of the search words your users have used to find your blog. And then link the search words to apropriate posts.

    Regards,
    Fredrik – Självförsvarsbloggen
en blogg som hjälper vanliga människor att bli bättre på självförsvar

  • Another great concept. Sneeze Page.. LoL… I will have to try this with my hosting plan comparison site.

  • For series, I would recommend the “In series” plug-in (available for download @ http://remstate.com/projects/in-series/ )

You can see it in action on my blog – the table of contents nicely ties together the two parts of this story.

    http://www.observingcasually.com/fiction-friday-the-tale-of-the-wolf/

As I add more to the story in the future, I can easily append them to the series (by simply cmaking a couple of clicks within the Wordpress “new post” screen) and the “table of contents” in the older posts are automaticallty updated.

I’ll also be adding a “Best of The Casual Observer” page very shortly.

  • OK guys, I took a look at nearly all your sneeze-pages. It’s maybe just me, but I don’t get it.

What I observe in most cases is this: you make a sneeze-page and then don’t put it in your navigation. You link to it from a post that will be soon on page 20 of your blog. So your sneeze-page will drown together with your post.

What do I miss? Can someone explain this to me?

    Darren, it’s a great idea b.t.w.

  • I will have to take some time to make one of these pages, but first I must admit I got lost here for a while, reading about digital photography. I guess it works!

I do have links to each category on my About page, but I don’t think that’s quite the same.

You can see it here: http://angelamills.wordpress.com/about/

  • I made a sneeze page called Blogging 101. It’s not huge, but then I only have about 16-17 live posts so far, so it’s proportionally accurate I think.

  • Sneeze page is a good way to promote our blogs. But, I believe it works effectively only when we create new sneeze pages on a regular basis.

  • Hi Darren,

good post and very good idea. Today I made my sneeze page:
    http://www.seospam.it/il-meglio-di-seo-spam/
It’s in italian, as I’m from Italy :)
This is “The best of” page of my blog. I linked this page on top of the blog, in sidebar and at the bottom of every post.

  • My mom blog is about family, so I posted a summary of my son’s first five years of life since we just celebrated his fifth birhday. Comments welcome on the website, please!

    Thank you very much.

oh yeah… he just walked by me and made a fake sneeze! What a ham!!

  • I don’t have a huge amount of posts on my blog but I have linked up some common themes here:

    http://kevincumbria.wordpress.com/2009/04/23/summarising-some-themes-and-posts/

  • This is a great idea, one I hadn’t thought of. I think I’ll try one on my most popular posts. However, one on my “How to” posts might be better.

I’ve been doing more lists lately than I usually do, so I may wait until tomorrow to do the sneeze page. Readers liked my post on the “Top 10 Earth Day Top 10 Lists.”

  • Here we go, my Snezze Page:

    http://zenlife.comze.com/2009/04/best-of-zen-life-2009/

I have added it to the featured content gallery and made a sticky post on my main page.

Thanks for the tip . Another Benefit 4- It helps your specialize more about your topic/niche , and its a way of keeping track of your focus capability .

  • LOVE THIS IDEA! Why didn’t I think of it – So glad I am taking this course. I knew I could improve as a blogger – and you are really helping. I hope to go from 2,000 ave unique visitors to 10k – in the next year. Not sure if it is possible – but all these ideas are sure to help.

  • Already been done.

That is what we’re talking about, right?

  • I kind of used this technique to promote ‘English Ale Month’ on our beer review blog. Its an intro post that links to all of the English beers we’ve reviewed.

  • I thought I’d add that as a surfer, when I come across a blog that I love, I go searching for links so I can see more. This idea makes it super easy to find more content.

  • Wow, this is really something i have never thought about….

I will explore this way of making a post a little more before jumping into it…

But again, this is really food for blog-thought!! :-)

    Greetings,
    Claus,
    http://www.clausdjensen.com/out-of-nowhere.html/

  • Oh, finally i knew that a page just like that named Sneeze Page :) Pretty good task, and sooner i’m gonna make it.

    Thanks

  • Great idea and something which is lacking on my site. I love the one on zen life and I plan to do something similar in the near future.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

  • To Darren or anyone else who can help me,

Let me see if I have this correctly: I will go through my posts and select maybe 4 types of photography I do and from those select 4-6 of my best photos/posts for each type and put them all on one page (not another post). Should I do a “to read more” thing?

I have never done this before and have been blogging for only 7-8 months. I think this is a very good idea and I hope it will get more readers to my site.

    Bridget

  • Very interesting concept. I think I’ve tried this before, but never figured out how to organize it. I’ll give it another shot, thanks!

  • I did this a few weeks ago because I had identified a problem where even I was having trouble finding some of the hidden jewels on Our Hiking Blog.

It is basically a list post , grouped into relevant topics: http://frankinoz.blogspot.com/2008/12/hiking-blog-find-information-about-food.html

It works well (now I have to update it with all the new posts !)

  • I just did this on my site, I added a custom RSS Box of all my post’s it shows up at the bottom of my articles http://bambilashes.com/buy-latisse-drug-online-how-to.php I think it was the best thing I could have done to create more page reads, Funny how you wrote about the importance of this. If any one needs a custom RSS Box for there site I got mine at http://www.wordpress-installer.com/auto-blogging-rss-feeds-custom-built.php, I also added a php feed to get my site updated around the clock, kinda an auto blog plugin, because html rss feeds are ignored by spiders, but they do read php rss feeds. Thanks Darren

  • So I’ve putted my sneeze-page of the two most important categories ‘People’ and ‘Human Mind’ into my navigation.
Just have to write a post to announce it to my dear readers and the task is done.

Take a look if you like.
    http://mario-live.com/blog/people-human-mind/

  • I have a sitemap where I list all of the blog posts I’ve written. I also have a “guide” to my blog (it’s called A Guide to Abundance Blog for the Uninitiated) where I list what I consider to be my best blog posts: http://abundance-blog.marelisa-online.com/a-guide-to-abundance-blog-for-the-uninitiated/. I think these qualify as sneeze pages.

  • Great I dea I will do this sometime this weekend

  • Haha! It’s like you could read some of our minds! I’ve just reached a ‘milestone’ (article no.10 just went out a few days ago) in a series of articles I’ve done on travelling alone and it’s in my schedule (another one of your great lessons, btw) to create an article recapping those 10 articles, and linking them up. Didn’t know it was called a “sneeze page”! I’ll stick to my schedule though and publish it early next week.
    Another great lesson Darren!
    Cheers!

  • I have a writing blog, and my sneeze post is about various poets:

    http://aprilboland.blogspot.com/2009/04/napowrimo-has-been-great-so-far-and-it.html

  • I made my “practice” sneeze page earlier today for the challenge. It definitely gave me some ideas for future ones.

Then I got carried away and posted another (http://opinionatedant.com/photography/snapped/) and that’s when my pre-K HTML skills reminded me I really don’t know what I’m doing!

But thank you for the lesson, it’s been great and it also inadvertently gave me fodder for a new post.

  • I will have to take some time to make one of these pages, but first I must admit I got lost here for a while, reading about digital photography. I guess it works!

I do have links to each category on my About page, but I don’t think that’s quite the same.

    You can see it here:http://www.ugg2u.net

  • Woo! It’s not even midnight and I did my homework, I feel so proud. This was a great concept, I’m glad I did it – I should do it regularly. My sneeze post is a list of the recipes I’ve featured thus far, in my first three months of blogging. Check it out!

    http://typeamommyblog.blogspot.com/2009/04/its-almost-my-three-month-blogoversery.html

  • Thanks for the tip. I had a reader send me an email asking for help with something and realized that I have a bunch of old posts about it. Sneeze page in the works.

  • Check! I also use a PostRank widget which shows top rated posts by readers – it totally works, it changes all the time, unlike if I just had my own list up there.

  • Great tips Darren! I’ve been linking my link post or list post in my sidebar, I find it quite effectiveness as I get lots valuable comment on the post.

Take a Look on this :

  • I can think of two series for this exercise; one page for articles about color and one page for articles about caring for art jewelry. Oh and a page that refers to articles about trends in fashion and art jewelry…

Goodness, the possibilities are endless. Now I just have to do one. Oddly enough, I have not yet done any WP pages and these would be the perfect subjects for that vehicle.

  • I made a Favorites page. I went through all my posts and chose the ones I thought reflected my site the most. I then looked through the chosen posts and saw they fit into four topics.

I’m not sure if that’s what you were wanting but I like how it helps define my blog. It gives more insight into who I am.

  • Great Tip!

I have now created my page simply titled Best Of – http://spudontherun.wordpress.com/best-of/

  • This actually turned out to be fun. I got to go back and read my “fun” articles and putting them on a sneeze page seems like a no-brainer now. Thanks for the idea, Darren.

  • DONE! Ahhh, these last few days have been very tough challenges! Here is my sneeze page:

    http://www.littleblueschool.com/ideabox.htm

  • Wonderful advice as always. I’ve been working through similar tasks to refresh old content but this is the best technique thus far.

Even as an exercise to define categories for your site (from a user perspective) – it lets you do a basic card sort on the content you happened to have created (never what you planned).

This results in you seeing some (OMG) why is THAT post so buried, hey there’s a pattern I didn’t anticipate etc.

Then grouping them into short lists in your sneeze page helps you redefine some of your IA in your head for the future.

Here’s mine if you’d like to see it – I reckon it stays pretty true to the task.

    http://sexandpoker.com/the-very-best-of-sex-and-poker/

Cheers and keep on imaging great things.

  • Done. Thanks for the tip, I think it is a great idea, I am presenting the related sneeze page in every post from now on! Thanks.

  • I never knew what these themed pages were called…or that they even had a name to begin with! So I’ll go with Sneeze Page. Love it.

I’ve been up and running for 17 months and have what amounts to four sneeze pages:

    - Best of Blog Harbor
    - The Farmland Almanac with Harrison Beillor
    - Gabriel Theatre on the Air
    - Eye on Monday

The Best Of page kicked it off. I put it to readers to tell me what they liked most. They told me, I put the page together and off we went. Over time, the trends have shifted and I’ve taken a few out and added a few others. And while the page gets hits, it doesn’t get as many as I believe it should.

That falls in my lap. I’ve done absolutely nothing to promote it. The other sneeze pages do get hits – and, coincidentally enough, they get far more promotion.

So now you have my sneeze pages…I’d love feedback should you ever get around to them.

    Chrisotpher

  • It’s really late here…perhaps next time I post at 2 am CDT, I can actually spell my own damn name correctly!

    It’s CHRISTOPHER.

    Jeez. :-o

  • Nice blog – just stumbled to it today and read some of the posts. Have subscribed to the RSS feed.

I do not have a sneeze page yet – my blog is still just slightly under a year old. Maybe you can check it out still: http://blog.hardeep.name. Photography is also one of my passions.

  • As I did my Friday Freebie today I referred back to two previous freebies, does that count.

  • This can be a big job.
I’m looking at a couple of plugins to help/
    Can you suggest some.
    So fat I’ve found these

    http://remstate.com/projects/in-series/

Can you suggest any more plugins?

  • I know it’s not the point, but ’sneeze page’ is a lovely name for it. Very memorable, in a slightly off-colour way. I’ll look forward to seeing it in the OED (Oxford English Dictionary)!

  • Sneeze page that overviews my comedy shorts, titled ‘FLIM AVELLA!’ (spelled wrong on purpose):

    http://www.joeavella.com/2009/04/24/flim-avella/

  • I never thought to do this, makes perfect sense. Thank you for the tip! Here is my first achoo…

    Starting Your Green Job Search:
    http://greengigs.blogspot.com/2009/04/starting-your-green-job-search.html

  • I already commented once – but I just needed to come back and thank you again! My “sneeze page” was a HUGE success. What a BRILLIANT IDEA!

  • Like a Table of Contents with comments or the front cover of a magazine that list the current topics scattered across the alluring picture.

    Thank you

  • What a simple idea but convincing idea! It was very helpful that the content management systems that hosts my blog supports tagging. So selecting the right tags did pull up possible relevant posts for a themed sneeze page. The theme was open educational resources http://info.ulrich-schrader.de/node/642 . Now I am interested in monitoring the effects.

Thanks again – and happy birthday Darren (if I remember the tweet right)
    Ulrich

  • I did something similar to this at my site by creating a “best of” page. It only has a couple of links right now, but my blog is still in its infancy. Check it out! http://www.nomenot.net/best

  • Great idea, Darren:

I’ve composed my first ’sneeze’ blog post out of respect for and in remembrance of a friend.

    Wisdom

Dave, my friend and bridge partner died recently, at age 92. He had suffered a stroke 10 years previously which had left him paralyzed and in a wheelchair. Although the paralysis was over his whole body, he did have very limited use of his right hand. He could not speak.

He had lived. He was a young man during the 1930s “Dirty Thirties” Depression. He had fought in World War II. He had married and raised a family. During his working career he worked in ‘electronics’; through tube radios, then radar to computer chips. In other words, he had a wealth of wisdom to impart.

We were able to bid and play bridge with the help of some assistance devices. He was by far the best player in our group. He always had the kindness and patience to teach beginners.

He had become computer literate, and used the ‘hunt and peck’ keyboard method with the limited use of his right hand. He composed articles, wrote correspondence and emails, and kept in touch with friends. Those of us who were more ‘able-bodied’ were amazed at the amount of effort and time that he put into work.

He was a true inspiration to us all with his Gaelic sense of wit, irony, and wry humor. That was with him until the end of his life.

We were all very saddened with his loss. That was partially because he brought such happiness and joy to all of those around him. Indeed, he provided hope and inspiration for younger people hoping to learn to grow older gracefully.

It was his material, and with his permission, that we began a series of posts called “Dave Sez”. There will be more posts scheduled for the 1st day of following months, but some of those posts from past months are here:

How To Plant Your Garden from July, 2008
Things Have Changed from August, 2008
Why Ask Why? from September, 2008
    Inner Strength from October, 2008
Playing With Words from November, 2008
Food For Thought from December, 2008
    Trivia from January, 2009
    Ponderables – post 1 from February, 2009
    For Lexophiles from March, 2009
Today’s Stock Market Report from April, 2009

  • Great article for me right now. I’m putting up years of content in one place, and it’s getting crowded. I set up a sneeze page for creativity articles as soon as I read your article. Going to do everything else, as well.

    http://angiedixon.com/?page_id=843

  • Great idea, Darren. Thanks! I’m doing the challenge on both my company site and kennel site so it’s quite a bit of fun (and work)!

I made a squeeze page for today’s post on my kennel site and then put the link with a nicely placed called to action in my About and Basset Hounds 101 pages.

    http://www.bassethounds.nu/the-best-of-bassethoundsnu/

The idea is that this is a page I can build and organise the more content I put in the site.

  • A little light bulb just shined above my head! I guess this is what I have already been doing and didn’t even realize it! I post one photo per day and at the end of each month I post a gallery page with all of the photos on it. In my sidebar is a list of my monthly galleries. I will still do some different ones by catagory.

I am a few days behind on getting things done but I am reading, thinking and posting every day. I am learning a lot and really enjoying this!

    Bridget

  • Thanks for this tip Darren. I wrote about how Chinese medicine is more than just acupuncture and herbs, it has tons of tips for to you maintain your own health.

    http://albanacupuncture.com/blog/?p=397

You can even use some of my remedies to stop sneezing for real!

  • Like others that have commented, I’m taking the route of a custom Twitter landing page that is an “about me” type of page. It lists some of my most popular posts as well.

    http://www.vortexministry.com/page/About-Bill-Wolfe.aspx

I’m planning to promote this page around other places as well.

  • And I always thought a sitemap or archives was enough. Autoblog has this cool stuff called daily U-Turn, where they have the yesterdays articles there. I am thinking of a monthly U-Turn. What say?

  • Once again, I’m saying to myself, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?” I confess that I am finding this 31BBB process exteremly helpful. I just now installed my sneezers. If my blog could talk, it would say, “Thank you very much!”

  • Ok here is my sneeze page:

    http://vener-art.com/beadblog/index.php/caring-for-art-jewelry/

Clearly it is a work in progress because certianly I will be adding more to this table of contents.

Let me know what you think please.

    Thanks!

    Patricia

  • Darren:

Once again, you’ve sparked intrigue, and a lot of hard, but happy work.

Here is the link to my first ’sneeze page’ in Modern Living, a post entitled “Wisdom”:
Modern Living: Sometimes on the Edge: Wisdom …
    [ http://sometimesontheedge.blogspot.com/2009/04/wisdom.html ]

Thank you for all you are doing for us.

    Regards,
    Stan

  • I keep wanting to say “gesundheit”

    LOL!

  • Thank you for that clarification. I didn’t realize as much the importance of the sneeze page until now. I will start making sure that my sneeze page is in place and has the right mechanics.

    thanks again!

  • Great idea for sneeze page. I’m only up to 25 posts or less, so hopefully I’ll be able to do that soon.

I do have a few that are my favorites, so at least I have a starting point.

I really need to start generating weekly posts at the very, very least.

Thanks for doing the 31dbbb – I appreciate all you have taught us.

  • Sneeze pages? Hmmmm… good name. I started doing this about 6 months ago with the aim being to not just prominently show off old posts but also utilize wordpress as more of CMS. You have to make your posts easy to find and “search” or “archives” just does not cut it. As I deal with real estate I have pages set up for Buying, Selling, and neighbourhood break downs (with map and text index to posts). There are some terrific plug-ins that will help you create these indexes automatically if you don’t want to dive into code.

  • There’s a popular cooking blog out there that features a recipe each day and then links back to the recipe she posted a year ago. I’ve liked the idea and intend to start using it once it applies to my blog.

Now I need to figure out a sneeze method that will work for me in the interem.

  • I’ve got my first one done, a compilation of news stories on me and my site, my vlogs teaching how to save money like I do, and some of my teaching posts.

    http://littlemissknowitall.net/get-started-saving/

  • Thanks for another great technique, Darren!

I just posted a “Sneeze Page” called TAKS Awareness, which is a compilation of posts about the standardized tests here in Texas. Ranging from humorous Top 10 Lists and letters to administration (you gotta check that one out!) to rants and frustrations, it covers a lot of good, related posts.

    http://learnmegood2.blogspot.com/2009/04/taks-awareness.html

I also found the Post Rank widget that puts your Top Posts over in the sidebar to keep them in readers’ attention. I may need to start something similar with my own personal favorite posts to keep them in the public eye.

  • Here is my sneeze page:

    http://chroniclesofababycatcher.wordpress.com/about/

It is my “About this Blog” page. I hope that as I write more posts, I will be able to add more items to my sneeze page.

  • Ok, I’ve finally done my sneeze page. here it is:

    http://www.nicolasprudhon.com/seo-help/100000-pages-viewed

  • The two most popular posts on my fly fishing blog, by far, are sneeze posts. I did a couple of series of posts on how some ‘celebrity anglers’ set themselves up for specific types of fishing, and then summarized the input in ’roundup’ posts.

    http://blog.deneki.com/2009/04/steelhead-rig-roundup.html
    http://blog.deneki.com/2009/01/king-rig-roundup.html

    Thanks Darren!

  • I’m a little behind and did my sneeze post today. It turned out O.K., but it took a long time.

I’ve been writing for baby boomer consumers since January of 2008. I did a round-up of the posts I’ve written on retirement.

It will be fun to see what, if anything, my readers have to say.

I’ll need to think about whether it’s too long. I can easily cut out a few of the articles, but when you write them, you think they’re all great. At least, I do.

  • This assignment gave me a little trouble. I wasn’t sure how to make a sneeze page for my blogs. But then I noticed that my ABOUT pages get a lot of traffic. So I wonder, can your ABOUT page be a sneeze page?

I made some changes on my ABOUT page for The Concierge Lifestyle blog. Take a look and tell me what you think.
    http://lifestyleconciergeservice.net/blog/about/

  • I like this idea. Of course, I set up a new blog because of this challenge. I have been wondering how to keep the old items fresh and I believe that a few jump off or sneeze pages based on themes would be ideal. Great idea!

If anyone would like to look at the blog and provide some feedback, It’s http://www.eating4eternity.org/blog

    Happy blogging everyone!

    Vaughn

  • As your blog grows you can continue to develop your Sneeze page. I see this is presenting trouble for many new bloggers. Just focus on an archives page for now.

Take a look at how I formatted mine. You can view by category, month and view the last 100 posts quite easily.

    -Mig

  • I have a few sneeze pages–which were originally sub-indexes. I am still moving the website over into a blog format and think that I will put them in as sub-pages in a resource area.

One of the more popular sneeze pages is the Unusual Animal Careerspage.

I have some other ideas but am going to need to map them out. Although I’ve done this before I am glad that you brought it up as a useful concept.

One of the things I am doing with this type of page is placing a drop down email sign-up form to target those people specifically interested in the topic–helps to segment my list nicely.

Even though my time is limited at the moment and I have not been in the forums too much I really am enjoying the process of the 31 day process.

  • Here’s one of mine:

    Narcissists

  • I can’t wait until I have enough content to do this – Thanks Darren!

  • Fantastic! As a travel blogger, this is a great way to categorize posts by destination and theme. Whole posts about “Attractions in Jamaica” or “Dining in Paris” can be linked to all of the single posts I’ve written on those topics. A great way to add content, as well as a great way to improve SEO in a blog that is wholly narrative.

  • here’s my call to action and sneeze page in one http://www.itsfrugalbeinggreen.com/2009/04/best-of-its-frugal-being-green-april.html hopefully i’ll get a good response

  • Our sneeze-page is on top healthy foods. It’s a collection of all our posts on the health benefits of various foods. As we discover more research on the subject we will write more articles and link them to this page.
TIP We have a Wordpress blog so the way we approached this was to create a new link category called “Featured Posts”. We then setup the  links widget to display on the left hand panel of our blog. It was then just a matter of adding our sneeze-page post as a link in the “Featured Posts” links category.

  • I’ve been slowly working on putting this together ever since I read this post, and I finally finished! (Although I have a feeling this page is something I can add to in the future.) My sneeze page is all about my picks for some of the best green and eco-friendly products on the market right now.

  • Our sneeze page is called “Project Management Greatest Hits” and features relevant posts we’ve published over time.

    http://www.project-management-blog.com/2009/05/04/project-management-greatest-hits/

    Thanks for the tips!

  • I could not figure out what type of Sneeze Page to create simply because I do not have enough posts to make a series. Luckily, I came up with what I think is a great idea, which is a “Feature” page. This page highlights posts that I have written for other blogs and/or any blogs I have been featured in.

Check it out and please provide feedback:
    http://www.jma-daily.com/?page_id=126

  • now thats an amazing tip.

  • Great idea! I’m a little late to the party, but I just made three sneeze pages highlighting posts on several themes (email marketing, customer service, and web marketing).

@Mario, I made a page (in WordPress) and then linked the page to a new category called Popular Posts. This way, the pages are permanently on the front of my site.

    Like this:

    http://kaplancopy.com/blog/improve-your-email-marketing-campaigns

  • Blogger makes this a little hard to do since it seems like we just get one “page” I did a work around that I hope will work. I added a “link list” to my sidebar that contains only one link: the link to my “sneeze page” post. Until it drifts off my page my “sneeze page” is actually a post http://thesimplelifekdl.blogspot.com/2009/05/blog-schedule.html Eventually I can add later posts under the various topics and keep it updated, but it won’t show up unless the reader clicks on the archive by topic link on my sidebar. Is there a better way to do this?

  • I ended up creating a couple of sneeze pages after reading this. The most successful has been: http://on-ruby.blogspot.com/2009/05/questions-five-ways-overview.html This page has a bounce rate of about 40%, which is a fantastic improvement over my blog’s average.

  • This sounds idea. I’ll keep this in mind when I convert to a full-fledged blog format.

  • I’ve really noticed an increase after I made my ’sneeze page’ :)
    Thnx Darren.

    Here’s my sneeze page – http://www.ebizelindia.org/2009/06/everything-you-need-to-know-about-ebiz.html

  • Very late but here’s my sneeze page. It was fun to do:
    http://www.veribatim.com/blog/2009/06/17/remember-to-recycle-old-social-media-tips-are-still-good-ones/

  • Amusingly enough, this was my project for the day before I got your challenge e-mail. To answer it, I added two plugins to the site: a related posts plugin and a “one year ago” plugin that just highlights posts from one year ago in a sidebar.

I also made this page: http://childwild.dreamhosters.com/?page_id=2313, on the dummy version of my blog where I’m doing a redesign with a new theme. It should be up and running next week.
