Write a Link Post [Day 7 - 31DBBB]
It is day 7 in the 31 Day challenge and today’s task is to write a ‘link post‘ – a post that links up to at least one other blog.
Someone asked me recently to name a few ways that I built a readership on my first blog. One of the answers that I gave to their question was that I was generous with linking to other blogs.
I wasn’t alone – back then (we’re talking 7 years ago) blogging revolved around the link. One blogger would write something and it wasn’t unusual to have hundreds of others link to it with posts that built upon the ideas of the first post in some way.
The result was that
- ideas spread across the blogosphere quickly
- relationships between bloggers grew with each link
- and as a result everyone’s blog grew
While this still happens today on blogs to some degree much of the sharing of links has moved to other mediums (like Twitter and Social Bookmarking sites) and it’s commonplace for a blogger to rarely link to other blogs on their blog because they’re either doing it in other places or they feel they’d be building up a competitor.
Your Task Today is to Link Link Link
Today your task is to reclaim some of this practice of linking to other blogs and to write a post that highlights what another blogger (or bloggers) in your niche has written.
Reasons to link out on your blog
- Giving something of value to your readers - while your readers come to your blog to read what you have to say – I find that in almost every case that I link up to quality content that readers are appreciative.
- Builds Your Credibility - regularly highlighting what others are writing in your niche shows your readers that you’re abreast of developments in your field and that you’re ‘connected’ to the network.
- Builds Relationships with Other Bloggers – there’s nothing like sending another blogger traffic to make an impression and build connections. Not only that, when you link to others in a constructive way that actually builds upon their ideas and adds value to a conversation that they’ve started it can often lead to ongoing interactions.
- SEO – some SEOs argue that linking out to other relevant content in your niche with relevant keywords as anchor text can have an impact upon how the search engines see your own site. You don’t want to go over the top and link out too much – but a few links to quality content on your topic may well show a search engine that you’re worthy of authority. It’s certainly not the main factor in Google’s algorithm but many argue that it helps.
The key with this task is to link to something of value – something that your readers will find relevant and helpful to them.
Of course building this practice into your blogging means you need to be aware of what’s happening in your particular part of the web. To do this you’ll probably want to:
- Subscribe to other blogs and sites in your niche
- Watch social bookmarking sites that cover topics in your industry
- Subscribe to ‘news alerts’ with tools like Googles News alerts etc
6 Types of Link Posts to Consider
There are many ways to link up to another blog in a way that is valuable. Let me give you a few suggestions on ways to do it that go beyond just giving your readers and link and saying ‘go read it’:
1. Build Upon the Points of Others – take an article that someone has written and then add some points and perspectives that they might have missed or not considered. A classic way to do this is to take a list post that someone has written and add an extra couple of points. For example if someone writes a post ‘21 Ways to Write Posts that Are Guaranteed to Grow Your Blog‘ – write a post ‘3 more Ways to Write Posts that Are Guaranteed to Grow Your Blog’ that links to the first post – that might pick up a few of the points and then extends the article by suggesting 3 of your own points.
2. Take the Opposite Point of View – another way to bounce off someone else’s post is to explore the opposing point of view to their post. You might do this as ‘devils advocate’ or because you actually believe the opposite of what they’re saying is true. Keep in mind that this might not build a relationship with the other blogger if you do it in a way that offends!
3. Build a Resource on a Topic – pick a topic in your niche and then spend some time what other bloggers in your niche have written on that topic previously. What you’ll probably end up with is a list of posts from other blogs all on the one topic. You could present them simply as a list of links or could state the main points from each post or even use quotes from each one. These types of posts often do well in social media sites – particularly if you gather a large list of helpful resources on the topic.
Example: DIY Lighting Hacks for Digital Photographers – this post was simply a collection of tutorials that others had written on a similar topic. I included a picture and short description of each one as a list. The post was passed around the web in many social media sites. Yesterdays post here at Problogger 27 Must Read Tips and Tutorials for Bloggers would be another example of this.
4. Speed Linking – I used to do this regularly on ProBlogger (example) (note: I’ve moved most of it over to my Twitter account). The idea was that on a given day I’d link to 5-6 posts that I came across in my daily reading for that day. The links generally didn’t relate strongly to one another but covered a broad range of topics that I felt were relevant to my readers.
Example: a while ago I wrote a post 25 Great Photography Tutorials and Links from Around the Web. It was simply a collection of a few great tutorials that others had written from the month or two before when I published the post (plus a few of my own links from our archives). This post made it to the front page of Digg and other social media sites simply because it contained some great tutorials.
5. One Question Interviews – this one takes a little co-ordination and advanced planning but is when you shoot a question out to another blogger (or bloggers) to get their perspective on a topic relevant to your readers. I find these most effective when you email the same question to 5 or so other bloggers in your niche and then compile all the answers into one post side by side so your readers can see different perspectives.
6. Suggest Further Reading and Give Examples – another common way to linking to others as well as creating value for readers and extra depth in your posts is to to add links to what others are saying on your topic in the day to day writing of posts. Your post might not be a ‘link post’ in and of itself as you cover a topic comprehensively from your own perspective – but this doesn’t stop you giving your readers some suggested reading at the end of your post on the topic at hand.
There are 6 suggestions for you but there are so many others that you could try. For more ideas check out a post I wrote called How to Add to Blogging Conversations… and Eliminate the Echo Chamber.
What others have said on this topic:
Your Task – Write a Link Post
OK – we’ve talked about why and how to do it – now it is time to go and write a link post. Once you’ve done it come back and tell us how you did it, what you learned, where the post is and what impact it has with readers and other bloggers.
PS: if you can find something relevant on another 31 Days participants blog it’d be great to share some link love to other bloggers in the community. I’ve seen quite a few 31DBBB participants starting to team up and support one another – why not reach out to someone today and see where it leads! There are loads of people over at the forum talking about this now: Day 7 – Write a Link Post

Linking to other relevant web pages certainly is a good way of showing your readers some good information that might be helpful for them and it also shows that you care to give them the right resources even if they have to leave your site for that.
Even for SEO, if we link out to other relevant pages that shows search engines that we are a ‘good’ ‘legit’ information library and not some self promoting blackhat site.

I already do this all the time. In fact, it could be argued it’s mostly what I do :)

It was a nice article on linking … but do we need to ask the blogger before we add some more points to his theories of work …..
Darren Rowse
April 12th, 2009 8:40 pm
Sudeep – no you don’t need permission to write about and add to the ideas of another person. I liken it to when you write an academic paper/essay – you cite sources but building on ideas of others is how we learn and progress and it’s a core part of what blogging is about.

Like Viratha, most of my posts include links to other blogs. In fact, that was one thing that I did in the early days of my blog in 2007 to build up a lot of attention.
My list post from Day 2 was actually a link post as I linked to 20 Blogs I Wish Were Around When I Started Teaching.
It’s been interesting to see the traffic build on that one post. I emailed the authors of those blogs yesterday and asked them to link to me. Already a few have and I’m starting to build deeper relationships with those bloggers through email and Twitter as well as comments. Great stuff!
Guess it’s about time to go write me another list post…

I’ve been a regular visitor to terrific author with a creative writing blog. He’s launched a new blog on simple blog tips. Yesterday, I wrote about his new blog and urged my readers to check out him out, stressing it will help them a lot in their blogging.
Of course, I’ve not been peeking over Darren’s shoulders. This is just a happy coincidence. “,)
This is my post on Terry Heath’s newly launched blog called Bloggity: http://salabasngmandaluyong.blogspot.com/2009/04/kick-ass-blog-tip-demystify-blogging.html
Well, back to reading the rest of list of blogging resources you’ve posted yesterday then.

If you do mostly use links like that, I’ve noticed I need to sift things ruthlessly. I do this by having Google Reader and a FF extension called “Read this Later” which work together.
I mark something for later reading in Reader using the extension. I read things in the extension by date added so there’s time between my first “hmmm, that was interesting” and the next “now, can I really use this?” moments.
I make sure that Read this Later has at least 100 things in it to read so there really is a few days between the two – I read fast and can scan up to 250 items in a day >.< It’s so hard not to take it to zero!

For the first time in seven days, I’m ahead of the game!
I do a weekly link post called Mike’s Life POW – Posts of the week. I simply pick the posts that arrive in my RSS feeder that I like the best each week and put them on the site on a Friday – linking to each post and with a brief synopsis.
Here’s this week’s:
http://www.mikeslife.org/content/mikes-life-posts-week-10th-april-2009
If any readers would like me to subscribe to their feeds, come and comment on my site and I’ll add you. You may be on POW in the future!

I just want to add that linking to a blog post that is relevant to your blog post does have some impact on your search engine ranking for the blog post.
What I will do is search on google for the same related post and link to the top 3 search result.
I have done my experiment and that blog keyword got a top 10 ranking from google without doing any other linking from !!
Anyway, this only work for longtail keyword… or the less satuarated keywords… :)

Hi Darren,
Great info, yet again. I’m pretty new to blogging… well, I’ve blogged in the past, but didn’t get the relevance of it until this year. I’ve relied on sites like yours to help me learn the ins and outs, so thanks.
Happy Easter!

I am doing 31DBBB with a buddy and went to her expat support blog to link a post — and what do I find but her latest post, about expat use of Twitter, mentions me! Surprise!
Here’s my microblog link post on Twitter:

I will run this link throughout the day with different intros about the contents of her post, and who Emmanuelle Archer is, and what her Winning Away blog is about

April 12th, 2009 9:06 pm
I did this yesterday!
The things I find relevant often cover a wide range of topics, so
I call those posts: Around the web (and name an edition of some sort).
I have a folder in my bookmarks bar that I add to when I come across something interesting.
I have also done posts in the past in response to blog posts I enjoyed reading, or posts where I had a different perspective than the author.
I will have to think about what topic I can be a resource about. That’s a tough one for me!

I think this is a great way to build relationships with other bloggers, and it is definitly something I don’t do enough.
I will do my homework, and write a link post, and will try to do it more and more.
And Joel, it is really interesting to see that that post is now the #5 in your top posts! Just great, that’s really stimulating to do that also. Maybe I will steal your idea, only with a different subject ;)
Thanks all!

This is one great idea. For example in my post about the Twitter killer apps pt1 & 2, I linked to several posts that provided some great insights related to the apps mentioned. I don’t mind linking as long as the contents are interrelated and providing useful info.
I would welcome bloggers who’s into Social Media/Blogging topics to keep in touch via Twitter (@wchingya), perhaps we could work something out in our future posts. Quality content is always welcome.

I use suggestions 1 and 6 frequently. Today’s blog post – http://www.inventingelephants.com/artagainstisolation.html – which I actually published right before I came over here – incorporates a little bit of both. I laughed when I saw the challenge.
I really like the idea of #5, which hadn’t occurred to me before. I’ve not done much reaching out beyond commenting and think that would make a great post. Thanks for the inspiration.

Well, I can’t stop thinking that these synchronicities have a deeper meaning :-) I already noted here that the first 3 tasks of this challenge were already done on my blog, before you posted them.
This time I’ve done exactly the same, I mean I wrote a list post, but in a manner you forgot / didn’t want to list: give your readers links to read while you’re on a trip or holiday. I’m on a trip to Japan like right now and before leaving I informed my readers about my (short) absence and give them a bunch of links from my niche, which is personal development. Hre’s the link of my list post:

Darren,
This is a great post and there seems to be a terror of linking out because it can drain link juice. A lot of people say to avoid this and to only link to your own internal pages. But posts are about learning. Also if you are someone that surfs a lot it is a good use of your time to gather the urls to use in posts.

A great concept, and of course Darren showed us a great example yesterday. It really is a win-win-win; the blog owner gets a content filled post, the linked blogs get incoming links and potential new readers, and the readers get exposed to ideas and concepts the might not have otherwise.
One place I think that people don’t do this enough is with product reviews. When I’m reading a review of the latest gadget, I almost always want a second opinion (no matter how credible the source), and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a blogger link to other reviews of the product.
Great way to round out the first week.

I did a simple blog as a follow up to the one before it. I posted a pic and then linked to the blog where I got it. So, got to give credit for the picture and link up.
my blog stats have increased dramatically this week.. This morning I’ve already had 212 hits. which is a record for Sunday morning for me. Apparently the heathens are at home reading my tidbits! I usually do this on Sundays because there are a lot less readers online to read in dept articles. And those who are online are usually just in a reading mood. So they will browse around to look for information to read. Give them some links to read and by doing so, give link love to other excellent writers.

This is such a great strategy because it works out for everyone’s benefit! I do this frequently on all of my blogs. It may be silly but I love promoting blogs that I enjoy reading by linking to them and pointing out other blogs that I think my readers might enjoy. I’ve even actively sought out ways to promote this kind of linkage – for instance, when I noticed I was getting search hits on the phrase “coffee mug cozies”, I dropped a comment to a friend with a crochet/knitting blog asking if she had any patterns. She posted links to several patterns for coffee mug cozes with a link back to my blog thanking me for the post idea, and then I posted a link back to her post at http://coffeebreak.today.com/2009/03/22/coffee-mug-cozies/. This morning, my post is a guest post from a fellow blogger who blogs about travel – about coffee tours, with links back to her blog, of course.

***Also — I know that many of the bloggers on here are working on their business blogs, but I am wanting to reach out to those who are work on personal, family, lifestyle blogs — if you are in one of those niches please feel free to drop me an email — desireefawn at gmail dot com. I would love to team up & get talking! ***

I’ve used option 6 before, but haven’t tried the others. My mind is working on how I can do so this week.
On Friday I linked to a couple of bloggers in my post:
Green Thumbs for Hire
My blog is a little unusual because it really is cross-niche, covering green stuff – nature, science, sustainability, cooking and gardening – and education, homeschooling, learning at home/parenting. If you write on any of these topics please get in touch. The reason I don’t link more often is that I read blogs on all of these topics and it’s hard to co-ordinate it all in my head. I love to work with others though!
And I’d like to say thanks to Mrs Green for linking to me in her post today: Easter with children. Your blog rocks!

I’m not sure if this counts, but I have a Mr. Linky up today. (I do it every Sunday.)
The meme is to:
Edit one thing in your life that is not working.
Add something to your life that improves your quality of life.
Appreciate something in your life that is already working for you.
Bloggers can link themselves to it, as long as it stays on topic. (I can delete those who don’t stay on topic or who just link to their home page.)

I have to admit, when I saw today’s challenge, I gave myself a virtual pat on the back as I thought, “No problem. I link to other sites & blogs all the time!”
Then, of course, I created more work for myself than originally planned by turning a simple book review into a mini research assignment.
So here is my post: http://averyfoodlydiary.blogspot.com/2009/04/my-best-easter-present-ever-and-it.html
Please visit and comment; I value every morsel of feedback tossed my way.

I did this on Friday with an acknowledgement to another blog where I had left a comment for a give-away she was doing to promote an upcoming event. She had left a comment on my blog that day and emailed me that I was the winner.
I copied the photo of the prize from her website and pasted it into my post which I thought was okay to do since I was referencing her site and asking peoople to check it out. Here’s my post:

Here’s mine: http://www.ladydelaluna.com/random/lazy-easterspring-link-love-day/
I used the Firefox plugin for Zemanta to help craft it. It’s more of the “Speedlinking” variety than anything else. I do use Zemanta in many posts, and it often gets the owner of the blog I’ve linked to over to my site for a comment and occasionally a subscription, which is super cool.
Plus it adds my site into the Zemanta pool so that others can use it to link to me however they see fit. :)

HI Darren, Guys and Gals,
Reading these blogs sure get the blogging juices flowing. Just yesterday I was contemplating on setting up a list and writing about the 10 most influential technology blogs.
Would such a list qualify as per the subject matter of external blog linking.
Anyway, back to today’s homework, I wrote a small post about the new Twitter worm to hit today. I link to Mashable for more info. Does this count for Linking. A critique is welcome. How can I improve such a post? What Else can I include in it?
I appreciate all comments, thanks

Got actually three links out in showing that there are still jobs to be had for law students. The power of the “via” is great for this. Showing your breadcrumb trail through the web isn’t just good citizenship, it’s also a great way to reach out to those sites you read and the sites they link to.

Linking is the lifeblood of blogging relationships, and I not only link on my blog, but I link on all the social sites, too.
Fortunately I learned the language of “link-love” from the very beginning of my blog, so this lesson is already second nature!
Blogging = relationships and you acknowledge these relationships by linking whenever appropriate! : )

Haven’t done this one yet, but it’s a very useful idea: back when I first started my writing blog, I linked to a great site on the same blogging network. We linked back and forth a few times, as we both write on similar subjects, and our posts frequently shot to the top o the ‘most popular’ list because of it. We’re good online friends now, too!
I revisited Task One today as well, looking properly at the elevator thingy. It occurred to me that I knew what I wanted to do somewhere deep down, but couldn’t describe it in words: so I sat with my muse (my fiancee) and chatted. I’ve now redesigned the blog a bit, built a slogan and added a descriptive little intro bit so visitors know what the site’s for. VERY hard work figuring out what one’s actual “mission” is. Worthwhile.
Link post will follow, a bit later!

I like Link Posts
Most of the articles I have written are of Link Posts Type. As Darren have already cleared the issue of Google Ranking, I think that it also help to get noticed at other blog by the track-backs. As you link to other posts the rack-back is automatically added to their post.
Another way to create a Excellent Link Post you can see here http://tinyurl.com/cppnxg
I am writing this type of posts from about 5 weeks as you can see in above link. I think this is the great way to link to others.

I do these types almost weekly, along the lines of #3, compiling/curating a list around a given topic related to online marketing or e-commerce. For instance, this was this past Friday’s: http://www.timpeter.com/blog/2009/04/10/get-more-for-your-money-small-business-e-commerce-link-digest-april-10-2009/

Great series. Looking forward to the rest.

This task was harder for me as I’m finding that, although I read a lot of blogs that I love, there are very few blogs in my niche (or I’m just not finding them). I use Delicious as my social bookmarking tool of choice, for the simple reason that it has the Daily Blog post option. Sadly, it’s not automatically compatable with Livejournal, so I have to use Delicious Glue and even THEN because the Delicious tool is uneliable, I manually use the Delicious blog rescue tool daily. but once I tweaked the .css on my blog, II’m very happy with the results.
Which is to say; I link blog regularly as a function of my browsing. An example can be seen here:

Yay!
I link to sites during my conversations regularly, but rarely make a post for this particular purpose.
The blog I’m working on for this challenge is niche-confused (a talking mutant ant who tries to keep to sidewalks, sweets and species- but rarely stays on topic) so this lesson will really help me find similar blogs.
Reading the comments here every day and checking out the sites has helped a lot. Now, I have homework to do at work!

TheDutchSchoolKid: It’s been really exciting to work with that one post. I wrote it last Sunday right before the challenge began and have been working some on marketing it and linking to it.
I added the social bookmark links to the blog yesterday and one person submitted it to StumbleUpon. That sent me nearly 90 visits in a matter of a couple of hours. And I sent out emails to the linked blogs yesterday, and am starting to get some of them linking to the post.
This has been a really interesting week for me. With only two posts (added a third one today), I have seen more traffic on my blog than in any week since I started blogging over two years ago.
Thanks ProBlogger! ;)

This is very true Darren! I am proud actually to do that in each of my post, where I recommend 5 other posts that I have read from other blogger and feel that they can offer different views or more resources to my readers.
The response has been great, because beyond any trackback I got from those sites, the blog owners often come to my own blog to see what’s all about, and many of them do drop some comments or send me personal email to thanks me for linking to them!

I gave it a whirl. I made a short post about the upcoming Palm Pre for Sprint. I took a number of articles from my competitors websites that dealt with the Pre and made a list.
So if you want to know anything about the Palm Pre you can probably find it in my post (or at least the links to the other sites).

I have done all of your suggestions as week one comes to a close, I have just not finished reading all of those ways to improve my blog – there are a lot. The first ones had the opposite suggestions in one post – I didn’t quite understand that. I have talked about my links to other photo weblogs I enjoy and today I put one right in my post. The one today is not going to be a permanent link, just something to look at. I do seem to be getting more views on my weblog but I think I have been putting up some real good photos!
Where can I go learn about social bookmarks? I have a twitter account with a few followers (3) and a few followees (8). But I am not sure what del.ici.ous is or how it works. I Googled it, but that assumes you know what it is!
I look forward to what else you have in store for us! Thank you, Darren!

Today I published something else, but finally I decided to write one (scheduled it for tuesday) about a post that intrigued me on stumble-upon.
The nice thing is: it’s a list post, so I have this thing done also in the end. That means of course that I’m back on track.
Does by the way anybody feel that he is on the next level with his blog already? In terms of spam comments I am, lol. I have much more than ever.

What I enjoy the most so far is that the community is very nice.

Day 7 and a link post. Well I use links most of the time in my posts, but there’s one built-in link plugin that I use on my blog – and it’s called appropriately ‘CommentLuv.’ The last blog post of any commenter is named and a link back to that post is provided. It’s a nice way to say ‘thanks’ for your comment, and there’s nothing to do apart from adding the plug-in to your blog. You can get CommentLuv here http://www.commentluv.com/download
Enjoy!

Some really solid ideas, Darren. I’m a big proponent of link posts. I also enjoy throwing shout-outs to bloggers as a way of attracting attention to someone, or several, who are wonderful writers with great content but for whatever reason don’t necessarily get the traffic they deserve.
My favorite point here, one that absolutely never occurred to me, is the one-question interview sent to multiple bloggers. Fantastic! I’m going to jump on that one.

Last night I wanted to post on what baby boomers were doing to celebrate Easter but I wasn’t able to find the kind of statistics I wanted to make the points that I thought would be interesting.
So I read dozens of blogs and linked to some indicating here’s what boomers are doing and writing about on their blogs for Easter.
Here’s my post:

Well, I think I was pretty successful with my link post.
http://eatingconsciously.blogspot.com/2009/04/lentil-tomato-soup.html
I was able to tie in a major post from a fellow blogger, throw in one of my own new recipes, link to one of my older recipes, and link to five other bloggers’ recipes that were similar. The theme was soups! We will see what the reaction is amongst readers and bloggers. I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks for the tip Darren. I am just starting out with the blog, so everything has been helpful. Without having many readers, this seems a little counter-intuitive that I would want to send someone landing on my blog to another blogger.
But I do believe in karma.

Good exercise!
Early on in my blogging career I learned the importance of link love and connecting with other bloggers. I read other blogs in my niche and have made quite a few friends from linking to them ;)

For today’s challenge I decided to do my linking in a sort of “drive by” fashion: A mention of going to lunch with one of my friends who is also a blogger while using her name to link to her site.
There are plenty of other things to link to, but as my post was a sort of “quick Weekend Wrap up” post, anything else would have looked *really* out of place.

Since I write mostly book reviews, most of my posts have a link to either an author’s blog or another book review blog. I’ve always done this as a service to my readers, but it honestly never occurred to me that this would impact search engine placement. Thanks for another great article!

I write link posts frequently because I do a TON of reading, so I always come across awesome things to share with my readers.
I wanted to try one of the suggestions from this blog post that I’ve never tried before, so I picked a topic that my readers have asked me for (how to be a better writer) and I put together a bunch of information about it.

Hmm… I did a link post. However, I disagree with the blog I am linking to and was clear about that, so I’m not sure whether traffic in either direction is going to build anyone’s long term traffic.
The post is called “Little Girls in Short Skirts” and it takes issue with another blog in my niche (homeschooling). I have links to a modesty blog in which a young girl lays out rules for hemlines and mascara for her fellow devotees of chaste behavior.

Lol. Did this (by accident) in one of the earlier assignments (combining lists, links, and e-mailing etc.). Got great response, mostly because DotNetKicks picked it up. I blogged about the response (and seeing it in Google Analytics) recently. I’m not going to repeat now, since I feel I’d be polluting the waters. All yesterday’s reading got me thinking I need to put up some more detailed and quality and fresh content (’pillar’, anyone), other than building up network mostly.

Aloha again!
Well this was much more difficult than I thought it would be. I had trouble finding blogs that spoke my language (so to speak).
I wanted to use some blogs and then the info would be off some how and I did not feel comfortable sending my readers there. Took a lot of searching as many were very big almost corporate blogs with contributing writers.
Now happy with the blogs I found, my post is here: http://lunchwithouted.wordpress.com/2009/04/12/swedish-breakfast-3/
Anyone here posting about Health? Nutrition? Stress? please contact me if you are …Mahalo!

The link should be a foundation of any post. Unless you’re genuinely so far ahead of the field that no one anywhere in the world has contributed to your thinking, then you should be linking!
Like many above, my list post included lots of links for business developers look to build their entrepreneurial ecosystem.
http://www.jbsh.co.uk/2009/04/07/5-critical-lists-for-business-development/
Since the blog is an integral part of my business, its natural to link out in the same way as I’d recommend or suggest other great people to work with. There’s also a bit of added value in my compiling the list and commenting on how I use some of the technologies.
The invitation is to get in touch and discuss how I could be helping a specific business, in specific ways (for a specific fee). :)

I’ve linked up with other blogs and/or articles regularly and I find it does help to build traffic as well as credibility. Some examples include:

The Most Impressive Tourist Attractions – this article was a bit of a social experiment. A fellow blogger wrote an article on “The most disappointing tourist attractions” and I turned it around, and we linked both our articles.

Enchanting spots: Amsterdam – this article was inspired by a comment by one of my fellow bloggers. In this article, I started by explaining the inspiration behind the article, and provided a link to the commenter’s blog.
http://tinyurl.com/dmp4v6
East African safaris – this article was written to promote one of my other articles on East African safaris. In this post, I provided useful links to other blogs who are experts on the subject.

Hi everyone,
I really enjoy linking out, and it provides the extra benefit of forcing me to take time to go around to my favorite sites and searches and see what is new. That way I stay involved, and so do my readers. And I get to provide resources for my readers too (lots of whom are NOT bloggers themselvs). I feature a weekly, “Weekend Classifieds” post.
I really enjoy it!

I am not sure if I did this right. http://lindylou-abbott.blogspot.com/2009/04/murfreesboro-tn-tornado-rutherford.html Linking is brand new for me. I went into HTML in my editing post for a post I created a few days ago about the tornadoes that hit my town, Murfreesboro, TN on Friday, April 10th. I took the word trauma and linked it to a previous article I wrote about trauma from being in storms after Hurricane Gustav a few months ago in LA and TX.
Should links be inbedded in words, like I did in the word trauma or is it done other ways?
I clicked on create a link in blogger but didn’t have a clue what I was doing, so I hit post/publish button and a link appeared as my first post on my blog referencing back to the article I clicked “links to this post” on. I am not sure what the difference is between “links to this post:” and “create a link” buttons.

Darren,
Thanks for the link task. I’ve actually done this a couple times without really thinking about how it could help my own blog.
I was planning to write something about Canon vs Sigma today. I’ve had some lens issues as of late.

I quickly found a blog post by Kenvin Oke where he reviews several Sigma lenses.

Writing a quality list post/link post requires a lot of research and a lot of time! This assignment took me about two hours – much longer than I’m used to. Here’s my final, published post: Top 10 Guerilla Art Blogs. I have to admit, two hours of research in, and I feel like I’m just scratching the surface.

Just wrote my post “GETTING YOUR BLOG ON ~ 3 Tips to get you blog noticed, read and followedGetting” and it has several links.
I decided to write about blogging as I am learning. Some Most people seem to struggle with what to write about, what content would make for good reading so I thought this would be a good opportunity to link to other experts on the subject (yourself included).
You can read about it here: http://www.redheadmarketingblog.com/getting-your-blog-on-3-tips/.
I have been reading the comments and visiting some of the blogs and leaving my own comments on theirs so thanks for the opportunity to meet and mingle with other bloggers.

I always try linking to another site (even if it’s small quiet self-promo). However, I found my art featured on another blog this morning and the traffic is crazy awesome! As good reciprocity, I mentioned her feature w/a screen capture on my blog to drive back to her site -this helps folks recognize they’re heading to the right site and anticipate seeing my products there, too. The list post I wrote for a task a few days ago is a great example of what I already do. You can read it at: http://artquiltmaker.com/blog/2009/04/vands-friday/. I really like linking to other sites and bloggers as I feel it increases the value of everyone’s blog or website. Connecting bits of information together really helps people find the information that they need and none of us can do it all alone. I also think linking out to others creates a community. Thanks!

Darren,
I’ve long been a fan of your blogging advice, so I wasn’t sure I’d get anything new from this challenge. I WAS WRONG!!
Each day’s exercise has brought benefits. The one on linking prompted me to look at some of my niche blogs in a different way, and I ended up writing a post that, less than 24 hours later, helped set a new record for me for page views in one day.
It wasn’t just that post — it was the accumulation of things I’ve done this week. But I”m getting some really good feedback on my link post: Are You Missing What (Second) Life Has to Offer?, and it’s NOT because of views by others in this challenge; this is the first time I’ve posted a comment on these challenge posts.
Thank you!!!!

Hey Darren,
It’s been a while since I commented last, but I wanted to share a Link post I just did for my 1,000 post thanking everyone who actually wrote posts for various reasons.
http://workingathomeinternet.com/WP/2009/04/13/our-1000th-post-thank-you/
And do check out the New Header that Lara Kupla designed just today after the post.
I didn’t really do it for the project, but it seemed to fit today’s theme perfectly.

This is a great idea for a post. I just finished writing my dental hygiene post for dogs and thought that various links would be beneficial. Since I’m still new at this, I just included a few but at least it’s a start. Here’s the link to my post for all who are interested:

I’m happy this is one of the tasks in your series. I had written a link post before but wasn’t sure how I felt about it. It’s a good opportunity to network and keep the creative juices flowing by adding new ideas and questions off another post. It’s also a good way to validate someone else’s work. My post link ended up linking to a recent post from Jesse Newhart

Darren, This is a great series.
I’m inspired and want to suggest to bloggers in my sphere that we get together. This way we could link to each other more often and also use twitter etc to promote each others posts.
So if you blog about Leadership and/or Productivity could you please leave your blog and email addresses and twitter name in a comment on this post and I’ll sort a way for us to help each other.

I use links a lot in my fashion blog. i have been trying to do at least a few posts each week which link to smaller shopping sites with the hope that I drive traffic to them. In the future, I am hoping to set up some partnerships to give my readers more value with exclusive offers or giveaways. Today, I linked to another fashion blog for the first time with the hope that link love is good for all aka a rising tide raises all boats.

This fit in nicely with what I needed to do with a particular post I was going to do about a twitter application I had found after a long search. I had been in contact with the blogger and discussed putting his info in an article and linking back to him so it was great timing. Feels good to give some respect to someone who provided great content. I also linked up his twitter account from my blog post as well.
Here is the post and by the way this is an awesome application for pulling in multiple twitter account feeds to your website – if you ever need to. Read my post and you will understand the application working on that made this a necessity and something a little fore thinking in the bridge between offline business and twitter.

This was a great assignment. A few months ago, I wrote a post about the types of movies men like and a blogger from England gave me some “link love: when discussing a movie night with her boyfriend. It became on of my most popular posts.
I was in the middle of working on this post about movie adaptions. So I checked with other bloggers in my niche (and on my blog roll) and found that they had written similar posts. There was even a blogging challenge by a book society on the same subject.

This was a fun, and research-y kind of project. Seeing what others had to offer in terms of downloads that help you organize I was able to see a real need for graphically designed content! I tried the “add to a list method” of link posting. It does expand your own thinking, and you really focus on the other blog.

As a BlogHer Contribuing Editor and a personal blogger who does this regularly, it was interesting to see the idea fleshed out. I don’t incorporate some of these link post types, so it’s something to think about.
Here’s my link post for the assignment. I bounced off a friend’s post who recently started up a new blog and used the opportunity to link to a great post on BlogHer at the end that features a bunch more cool links:

LINK TO OTHER BLOGS…GOT IT.
his to me was the first distinction on blogging that I got from Hugh Hewitt. The idea of a post vs and article.
A post being a quick paragraph or two opinion or referral related to someone’s blog or news item.
I have a tendency to focus on news items since I started blogging around the radio it was just easier for me to do.
Last night I definitely wrote more of an article that took several hours versus the 15-30 for a post or even a length 60 min. post.

I am getting late in catching up with the updates there Darren, but, better late than never, so goes the saying.
Today I have written what you have specified and I have tried to educate my readers and let the new readers also know that I have covered vast topics other than the current post is related to and have pointed them to the relevant posts.
All in all, my today’s post, How to increase the torrent downloading speeds in Windows Operating System? does illustrate the procedure with examples cited from the previous posts.

I had previously linked to a travel book store, and they put me on their newsletter list. Today their newsletter included a list of books for Earth Day. I wrote a post with three books I suggested for Earth Day and a link to their more comprehensive list on their web site.
Since not a lot of bloggers blog on my subject, I am happy to find someone to link to, but am inclined to ask someone who writes about books and travel to do a guest blog instead.

I did write a link post. http://info.ulrich-schrader.de/node/636 and even got some comments. I think what really did help was the trackback functionality on the original block.
Thank you so much for all your effort.

Great experience! Here’s my attempt at a link blog – I’d love any feedback or constructive criticism.

I’ve linked to web pages here to support my argument about health care:http://theplumduff.blogspot.com/2009/04/one-giant-aspirin-wont-solve-problem.html. Although I haven’t linked to a blog, I’m thinking of following up with a short posting listing blogs with similar concerns.

Great post! I’m a bit behind schedule (ok, a LOT behind schedule), but I’m working to catch up.
I wrote an article titled “10+ Slick Smooth Scrolling Portfolios” that features 10+ sites that use javascript to create smooth scrolling effects. Here’s the link:

Another great idea! I’ve actually started doing this with a new series I call, “In the News…”
I’ve found interesting blog and website articles on health & fitness topics and linked to them. You can see an example at:

Yes, I’m a little (okay, a lot) behind the mainstream, but hanging in there! My post is about canine weight loss, specifically about one of my own dogs that needs to lose weight:
http://brilliant-disguise.net/looktwice/2009/04/23/counting-canine-calories-23-of-3089-of-274/
I linked to a current post on the Dolittler veterinary blog about canine calorie counting:
http://www.dolittler.com/2009/04/23/Counting-calories-in-fat-dog-weight-loss-and-the-role-of-intelligence.html
and related the information to my Day 7 link post as well as a prior post I’d made about my dog needing to lose weight:
http://brilliant-disguise.net/looktwice/2009/03/14/giving-up-calories-14-of-3149-of-274/
My main blog topics are dogs and technology, and there are a lot of blogs out there with those topics, but it did take a little looking to find a good informative post to link to that was related to something I wanted to write about.

I liked the idea of the 1 question interview, this is something I haven’t tried before. The bloggers I contacted were more than happy to provide quotes and it was interesting to read their advice. I will definitely try this tactic again! Here is my article (yes, I’m way behind with the challenges!):

Check it out.

Linking is fun. Blogging is fun. This 31 Day Challenge is the best free seminair I’ve ever attended. I am learning so much that I would have never figured out on my own. I set up my blog as a prepetual epilogue and appendixes to my recently published book. I’ve set up a little contents box in my gadgets and linked to the introduction and a sample chapter and endorsements for the book. I’ve also linked a picture of my book cover to Amazon. Without this 31 Day Challenge I would not even have thought these things were possible to do.
Thank-you so much.

I actually wrote this post when I read this, but I just got around to publishing it:

I’ve been planning a design post for a long time and I thought, what better way to show some link love than to some of the most beautiful design blogs I read? So here it is!

I am a bit behind…got wrapped up in trying to read all of the links on day 6 (I am a newbie and thought I needed every hint I could get) but decided to move on today and go back to 6 later… My post for today’s assignment is:
http://thesimplelifekdl.blogspot.com/2009/05/sovereignty.html
My blog is about Christianity and Special Needs Parenting. I started it to fill a void I’ve seen in the Christian community. I was pretty surprised when I searched autism on Technorati and this article popped up #3 of some 13,000.
http://www.desiringgod.org/Blog/1769_god_is_purposeful_in_creating_all_people/
It related to some other posts I’ve written so I typed up a quick post and published it with just a few of my own comments (linked back to my relevant posts).
Very cool.

This has probably been the most difficult task to date. I am unable to find any worthwhile blogs in my particular field. Those I have found appear to have been abandoned.
I wonder how many blogs start then die within a few months?

My link post was closest to Number 6 – using links to expand on what I was saying and give extra info to readers. Here’s my post:
http://rachellewisillustration.blogspot.com/2009/05/formula-1-and-design.html
I talk about Formula 1; why the logo is my favourite and my love for the BrawnGP car, which is mostly sponsorless and is in my opinion, the best looking for this reason. I linked, amongst others, to a really interesting post for an idea of sponsorship for the car by Daniel Eatock.

My blog is about the art and craft of writing, and I linked to a post that asked whether blogging was writing.
I thought this would be of interest to other writers and other writer-bloggers (my target audience), because we writers notoriously take time away from our ‘real work’ to do things like blog.
The post is here:
http://cecinestpasunecuisine.blogspot.com/2009/05/is-it-coincidence-you-decide.html
Too soon to say what the impact is — if any, but I liked writing this post. What have I learned? That working at the blog takes time but it is worth it!

This should have been a stinking easy assignment, but here I am, late in the game, just to get it done.
I finally did get a post about large homes done–and I did include a relevant link–but it took forever. I decided that TRYING to find a blog article to link to is kind of backwards. From now on I’ll just be reading my favorite related blogs with an eye toward linking to those that strike me as relevant to my readers.
I am SO ready to move to Day 8!

Hi
Well I was thinking of putting together a link post on how to teach your child something but could not find enough blogs to link to. Then I happened to read the following post: 5 Tips To Keep Your Kids Safe This Summer which made me mad so I had to do my link post in reply. I guess being critical of another post is not ideal but I was critical of the press release that the blog was referring to rather than the blog itself so hoped this would be OK. The original post offended me as a parent and I thought I could do a post that was less insulting however when I started to write it was very hard so I kind of felt bad for my original rant. Anyway I carried on and here it is: Who Else Wants Tips For Keeping Their Children Safe This Summer?. Please don’t pan it too much – my intentions were good!
Cheers, Chloe

I’ve just started my new blog, I’m going to come out a link post and share it here soon. Either link post or list post will be a popular post among other style of post, I did see a lot of such top post in social bookmarking site like Digg. Anyway, good post.
Cheers,
Davis Lee
