And what about the results of the plans? My plan is for 2 years, and has changed it so far 2 times (within 3 months) and now the results are about 80% of planned, and due to the changes. I would like to go over 100%

I already read some of your previous posts and really like your writing. That’s a very useful aritcle. People should always write formal plans as I too agree that a formal business plan will help convey concepts to investors Thank you for the information.

I think my lack of a plan was one of my downfalls (for my first blog). And with a plan I probably could have saved alot of time and a little money. Good to know; I hope I can use these tips. :)

An excellent article for sure. I’m also looking for goals that are realistic supplied by case studies maybe.

I’ll look around here on Problogger but I did read one other blog that at least gave some general numbers like – try gaining x amount of comments by this time, x amount of subscribers by this time, etc.

Now I know that’s going to vary from niche to niche and style to style, but I think examples show people (new bloggers) what the goals could/should be.

For instance, Digital Inspiration blog has huge following but hardly any comments compared to a blogger who’s blogging about blogging who ends up with huge comments and huge subscribers.

Example after example are great for newbies so they can compare and set the vision other attributes of a plan by example.

Watch, now I’ll look around here on Darren’s blog and I’ll find answers to my comment, making it null and void. :)

My thoughts exactly on setting realistic goals. So many New Years resolutions go unfulfilled because they are simply set too high. I have planned out my blog similar to the way that you’ve prescribed and I feel that this has definitely given me an advantage; not so much in getting 3000 visitors per day but in sticking with the blog and maintaining the vision even when my blog is only getting 3 visitors per day.

I’m always a big proponent of writing your plan, then working your plan. If you don’t have a plan you follow, you’re slacking! Nice outline of a basic plan, here, Henry.

I think it is important to know if you want to write frequent short posts or more infrequent but longer posts as your strategy. I’m kind of on the middle with both frequency and article length.

Very well written. I think a lot of people jump into trying to make money on the internet but do not actually treat it as a business. It is fine to boot strap to get started, but you must make a plan and work the plan. I have learned the hard way that long term growth is much more solid than short term gains.

I loved the quote How people overestimate themselves…. 5 years.

Proper planing is essential in almost every sphere of life, not just blogging. As you quoted, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. If we don’t have a vision of what we are doing – we might end up doing really nothing.
