A Time for Talk and a Time for Action

Posted By Darren Rowse 2nd of January 2009 Miscellaneous Blog Tips 0 Comments

I really like this post by Chris Brogan – What’s in a Name.

“You worry about names. You think long and hard about titles. You put boxes around what you’re doing, if that suits you.

I’ll be over here just doing. Thinking, planning, doing, and observing my results.”

I’m always amazed by the debate and chatter that can at times surround blogging (and social media). Who’s doing it right and who’s doing it wrong, what is legitimate and what isn’t….

While there is a need for us as a community to talk, debate, reflect, label and define – the smart ones among us area also ‘doing’.

What do you think?

  1. we can sharing a lot fron debating, talking to other…..discussion interesting topic……all about to increase out knowledge..information …etc

  2. Absolutely right on! The debating usually comes from something the successful ones are doing.

  3. agree with this post. Take action. If not, we will not get the result we want.

  4. I’ve always been one to over-think, over-analyze and pretty much cripple myself in thought. Not anymore though. In regards to web sites, since I do development, I’ve always wanted my work to shine above everyone elses. Sometimes however, speed to market is more important, and you need to be able to weigh the need to be in the market now and potential create a lot of headaches for yourself down the road versus not reaching the market in the time you want, and making sure you just put something out there that is going to be easy to maintain and do what you need.

Taking action now is great, but sometimes it can come at a significant cost that is more than you might want to pay.

I’m saying screw it though. The quality of some of the sites I see out there are just crap, yet they rank, make money and all that. So what’s my take away?

    Just get er done….

  5. No question about it, it’s far too easy to sit by and be busily engaged in “research”, “thinking”, “analysis”, “over-analysis” and thinking “I’ll do that tomorrow…”

My new mantra for 2009 is very Nike!

  6. I always try to keep social media on a low burner. I know that it’s important to communicate but it is a drain on your time. The time you could be spending on the more productive projects in your business.

    Darren,

I hope you’ll forgive me for sounding a bit oddish about this, but I’ve been sort of doing the exact opposite. I have worked extremely little on my main website, and have spent almost all of my free time thinking and planning.

Rather than considering it a conflict between “talking” and “doing,” I think it might best be seen as a clash between “planning” and “talking.” When we communicate with others, write, and “do” it feels so productive. But it usually isn’t.

So far, this “mental” approach has worked almost perfectly. I’m already nearing the second page for two extremely competitive keyword phrases. If I “make it” to the first page, I’ll have succeeded and should have a full-time income. I’m excited, of course.

But my success wasn’t just “doing” — it was planning my course so that every moment I spent on the website was one that perfectly made sense, guaranteeing results.

Anyway, I hope this makes sense. :)

  9. Excellent point. I know I need to “just do.” Too much planning and not enough posting lately. Starting right now this year is going to be different. I’m off to post right now.

  10. No matter if you do it ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, people will allwys have their oppinion about what is the ‘right way’ to do things etc. As long as you are happy with your work, you will sleep well at ninght!
