I use date stamps on my posts so when I update I just add some content--when appropriate I also include a date stamp within the text of the post such as Update 5/1/09 or something similar. I haven't gone back to redo many of the posts but probably will spend some time doing that since I also moved my blog from Blogger to WP and need to update all the tags and categories.

When I first started blogging, I wrote posts that were WAY too long. I was used to writing chapters for books.

So this week, I went back and shortened one considerably and reposted it.

My question is how is duplicate content determined. If you cut a post by several paragraphs and change the headline, is it duplicate?

I try to avoid retooling blog entries from the archives at the expense of spending time working on new content, but I do believe it's entirely legit to do minor edits on older posts.

Mind you, I'm not talking about doing a George Lucas-style overhaul, just minor tweaks and most often, it's to provide a link forward to a newer, related post - kind of like reverse deep-linking. And when I do update older posts, I usually indicate it with a little red "Update" notation, so it's more apparent. (You can take a look at my <a href="http://www.2dolphins.com/2006/05/fivefingers-for-your-ten-toes.html" title="Click here to read my "FiveFingers For Your Ten Toes?" blog post on 2Dolphins.com" rel="nofollow">FiveFingers For Your Ten Toes</a> article for an example.)

I found this very helpful. Starting a new site, it's important to build a solid foundation. Like most posts here on Problogger, the more information I can find upfront to help establish a solid pattern and framework makes it easier to do so from the start instead of changing paths mid-stream.

@Outlet - I would not advise deleting old posts, as that will break any incoming links to those posts. Instead as Darren suggests, try updating the content and following the guidelines to update the post instead of deleting it.

I guess it depends on what kind of blog you have.

For a diary/journal, leaving old posts as they were will show "what you knew then", as people has mentioned.

For more knowledge-oriented sites like this where you try to help people with more "generic" information, you SHOULD update your old posts. If not, you should consider deleting posts that are no longer accurate or useful.

But is it still a "blog" when you go back to edit old articles :-) ?

"3. Usefulness and Usability"

I've been going through my site the past month and a half or so, and have started weeding out old posts that no longer add value to the site.

dead links, a mess, no search value - gone.

i've probably eliminated a few hundred posts already, and have taken away from the value of the blog in terms of usability.

on the flip side of that - I've been "sprucing things up" as I go... interlinking appropriate "like" articles, making sure video links work, attribution is given, etc.

the hope is that the archives become a better tool, rather than just being google bait with diminishing value.

This is a great post...I've been thinking of doing this now my blog is a year old and some of the old posts don't get traffic on the new domain I've migrated to.

One thing I have considered also is to make some of the most useful resources into blog pages rather than just posts, so they are more accessible and available and easy to find for new users. Since the great majority of my readership is organic search traffic, making everything more easily available and refreshing old posts seems very important.

I'm also really interested in someone's idea above for a plug in that notifies me of broken links...need to do some searching in the WP plug in directory I guess.

Thanks everyone.

This is very helpful information. Writing about environmental issues can be tricky because new laws are passed or other info gets updated. I use a permalink without the date in it too, so that is helpful for me to update old blog posts. Thanks for the tutorial.

I don't update my posts unless, of course I have heard of or found inaccuracies form grammar/spelling to facts. However, as far as my personal expressions and opinions go, I like to display how my thoughts and blogging itself may have evolved.

Yes, I update posts but never change the date. Usually, I do it to improve accuracy or add additional information.

Lately, I've been doing it more and more for SEO purposes, so that Google doesn't think that a post has been orphaned.

I've found that when I change a post, this goes to my Twitter as a new post (I use Twitterfeed), which can be good if I want to link older and newer posts together, but not so great if I'm just catching a spelling error.

I provide the results of historical research on my blog and sometimes I have omissions that are later discovered or blog readers find things and so I go back and put "update" in the text and make the addition/correction.

I consider my blog a historical record on 19th century furniture and want it to be as complete and accurate as possible.

If it is major enough, I'll do a new post pointing out the old "error".

Very nice article there.Sometimes I don't care about old posts and I left there to rot.But after reading your article it helps me understand the value of each post I make whether it's old or new.Pity is I don't have much time to do it.
