Reader Questions 121 comments

It’s time for another Reader Poll - this week I want to take a look at your posting frequency.

How Many Posts Did You Publish On Your Main Blog in May?

Pick your main blog and focus upon that. I responded for ProBlogger where I published 88 posts over May - 10 more than my three month average.

  • Thanks for this poll — I’m looking forward to the results. I was just recently making a plan for dramatically upping my number of posts. I have been successful with my 1 1/2 year old blog on only about 15 posts a month, so I am hoping things will really take off if I can commit to posting more frequently.

  • I just started my blog so I did not feel it would be fair to contribute a vote here. But, great idea for a poll, thanks!

  • Running a baseball blog we’ve upped our posting frequency during the weekdays and primarily cut out the weekend posts. This is one of the few times we’ve had M-F covered throughout the month and we ended up gaining about 15% in traffic.

  • I’ve been doing one post per weekday for almost a year now, and sometimes on the weekends, so this month of 11-20 was pretty much on par. Although, now and again I get urges to change the routine, simply because it feels so… routine.

  • May was my best month so far for posting. I’ve been energized by my increasing traffic on the site.

  • 58 posts last month, about 20 posts lower than previous months, I took a few more days off last month then months previously, busy with other projects and all.

This is a great poll though, helping bloggers reflect on how far they’ve come is a lot better for them then to look at how much further they have to go.

  • My May posting level was slightly below average at 13. I have had a few months where I have done 30 posts, but generally it’s about 15-20. I stopped trying to post every day because it was too much with all the blogs. I try to have a few good quality posts a week instead, usually about 3 but occasionally more. May was a busy month personally and I wasn’t able to stick to my usual schedule.

  • 179 posts for May - higher than usual because I went away on vacation and mobile photo blogged for a week.

  • I’m another weekday blogger. I wrote 20 this month.

  • About 20 (or less)
wonder where is it going :)

  • I only have time to post once a day, though I wish I could do it more with regular guest posters!

  • 10 posts for may. Getting used to the routine , I should do about 20 this month, trying to make sure that all my posts are valuable, the more quality than quantity paradigm

  • I think that I’ll complete 15 posts this month.

  • 166 in May. Down from 205 in June.

But I’m a sports blog, so things might be a little different.

  • We had 75 posts on mail blog and few on podcast blog. That gives us 2.5 posts/day and is lower than usual.

Us = me and other authors.

Post level dropped dramaticaly because I haven’t posted that often due to finishing my book.

I.e. in April we had 135 posts, 5 podcasts and few screencasts published.

  • I try to blog on every weekday , 11-20 posts are average for me.

  • I posted 26 in May, down a bit from my usual one-a-day approach, but I realized that since my posts are rarely under 450 words and cover deeper subject matter, I needed to lesson my number of posts. I am working on trying to encapsulate “wisdom fueling growth” in smaller posts.

  • ..er, that should have read, “lessen.”

  • I’ve been shamefully neglectful in the past couple of weeks (thanks Twitter lol), so I only made 9 posts in May. I always try to make a post at least every other day.

  • Posting was about average for me in May. I’m really trying to ramp up and get about 4 posts a week as opposed to 1 per week…

  • I try to blog at least 3 times a week - typically Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and maybe a quick light hearted post on the weekend. So I ended up with 16 posts in May…pretty much what I would expect.

  • I started my blog in May and provided 49 articles. I talk about women and work and family, so lots of things to say , you know :-)

  • 20 posts for me! June will be less though, as I’ve been busy transferring my blog from Blogger to Wordpress :)

  • I have also just started. right now i’m doing about 3 a week but hope to increase to atleast once a day 5 days a week. I run a gaming site so theres always plenty to write about.

  • 12 in May, but I wanted to do more. Just don’t have time to blog as much as I’d like.

  • 17 posts for me. One less than April, so it was pretty much on target.

  • 62, a record on this site for me. The State of Indiana had a Republican convention with a contested AG race, our site jumped rapidly prior to the convention with active debate statewide and then to number one as I live blogged from the floor of the convention.

Don’t expect that big a number in June.

  • I did 4 in May, the same in April, but down from when I started the blog in January and the months after that. Now I’m making the effort to post twice a week, which I think is sufficient for my readers.

But my subscribers have been growing, although my traffic “peaks and valleys.”

I’ve done some re-thinking about how i’m approaching my blog, and I’ve been trying Darren’s and other’s ideas about brainstorming ideas for posts and writing them ahead of time.

    All-in-all, I’m pleased.

  • Nice poll, interesting.

Monday till Friday each week, In May I had 21 posts.

  • five per day keep the doctor away - and google up

  • I’ve ramped up my efforts from 5 posts monthly to one-a-day in May. I’ve decided that this is a good pace to increase RSS subscribers, and product AD dollars down the road. I also feel much more passionate the more posting I do.

  • Technically, I created my new archives in May, whereby I separated all my reviews into individual posts. So, I could probably say I posted about 600 or more posts, but, for actual daily posts, I did about 30-40 range.

  • I was in shock. I had 53 posts for May! :|

  • The real question is: how many posts are TOO MANY? And I’m sure the answer has to do with how good the content is for each post…

  • 20 posts exactly for May. My goal has always been to post something every other day - this month I managed more than every other day.

I have found (with my clients/readers) that posting more than once a day is too overwhelming. I know that most blogs are good to do, but feedback from my readers is 1 post every other day is ideal.

  • I just post about 70 post for 5 blogs..

  • 12 posts on May. Hopefully better in June..:)

  • I post once a week. My blog is not news-oriented but essay oriented, so that is a writing schedule that works for me. I ramped up to once a week at the end of last year, after almost 3 years of posting twice a month or so. I like the new schedule, and my readers do too, judging from the increase in traffic these past few months.

  • 33 posts for May, which sounds about right considering I try to post daily, and occasionally sneak in a second post. I could really post twice-a-day at my main blog, but because I write for a couple different sources I try to spread that additional material around a bit.

  • I did the first 73 posts to Wir sprechen Online. - But well, it’s unfair to compare blogs and micro-blogs.

  • I took a page out of your playbook Darren and did a series on getting motivated for fitness this last month and it gave me a lot of posts to write about for a week. I find that my posting drops off when I am not motivated and in emailing my list on what they wanted to see they said that they have trouble getting motivated to workout so voila, a series of articles is quickly born.

  • Started up in May. If you ask again in June I will tell. Amazingly enough there are a few on here that posted over 150. Curiosity has got me and I will check out their Blogs.

  • Since my blog covers an NFL team, it’s been typical to post less during the dredges of the offseason (May and June). This year it wasn’t the case - 91 posts in May. I was pleasantly surprised.

The growth in the site has added demand - daily practices get 1-3 posts… any breaking injury news… it’s a blast.

  • 73 exactly. :)

  • My May posts were about half my usual posting total. Too many deadlines for clients left me with little time to grow my own business. Need to develop a strategy to avoid that the next time around.

  • I slacked ! Only had one post per week :-( I guess now that we have more people developing content, I decreased my frequency…..

Thanks for this post. I’m getting back on the horse this month!

  • 88. Wow.

I guess this is the difference between blogging as a business and blogging as a hobby.

I post three times per week. 15 posts on May which is my normal posting schedule.

  • May was my best month for posting so far. I’ve been blogging on and off for a number of years, but just recently decided to commit to writing each day (or almost every day). I expect June will yield a higher number of musings than May did.

  • I suppose I should have stated that I posted 15 times in May. Sorry for the oversight.

  • 112 for me, though I do have a couple of other people contributing too.

  • I posted 36 articels in May. I try to write one a day, but this month my goal is two posts a day. Trying to overcome the dip in visitors since its summer here in Sweden.

  • 113 for me. May was only my second month, and I typically add 1-3 posts per day…sometimes more if I’m really inspired. I’ve been told that’s an “ambitious” goal, but I’m nothing if not ambitious. And because it’s a topic I’m really passionate about and have fun researching, it really doesn’t feel like work.

  • 41-50

I contribute to the same blog in 2 places so I kinda guesstimated and combined… I average about 2-3 posts a day, but only 1-2 on the weekends.

I believe my high was 6 posts in 1 day

  • 18 - and it seemed less than usual.

  • I cant really vote because I started my blog on 5/26. I have six blog posts between 5/26 and 5/31.

  • I post 5 content posts during the week and usually a round-up/link love type post on the weekend sharing my favorite posts of the week in my niche.

  • I try to post once a day (average)… 33 posts for May.

  • I posted 64 times in May…I’m always in around 60/month because many of my blogs are simply images with a brief description. I can easily handle these posts everyday, if not more frequently! Weekends totally vary, but weekdays are 1-3 posts per day.

Last week I started a second blog because I’m loving this blog thing and it was time for a second “family” of topics!

  • The Masked Millionaire had 26 for the month of May.

  • I did about 22 in May, probably my most active month yet. The begining of June will probably be slow as I have a lot of studying to do for finals, but after that, I should be posting a lot more as summer will provide me with ample blogging time

  • I posted 30 times in May. My intention is to post daily, so I guess I’m on track.

  • Wow I’m really surprised by the votes. Only four people voted 41-50 including myself. I guess people forgot how important it is to post everyday. I write a new post every single day, and when ever I feel the need I post an extra 2 or 3 post’s in one day. The fact that the majority of people answered to less then 30 posts is not very good in my opinion.

This is a good example of why:

Jeff from BuzzMyBlog has a very good blog that I love(d) - Why the past tense? Well when I first came across the site I wanted to visit everyday, but then I noticed new content was posted every 2 days or so. I would go to the site and end up leaving simply because I already read everything on the site, and there was nothing new for me to read. After a while I simply stopped going. Now I just read what I get in my inbox through that sites feed.

But hey it’s only my opinion, you guys could have very good reasons for posting as much as you do. Some of you could be busy with work and family, or only blog part time like me.
Just thought I would share my thoughts with you guys!

PS @Jeff - I still like your blog, I’ll set my alarm clock for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and pay you a visit!

Great poll Idea Darren, very good look inside how other people are managing their blog posts.

  • My level was normal. I believe that posting every other day or so is healthy for me because I can have more time to do my offline responsibilities. Furthermore, I think my readers won’t take the time to read my posts if I give them so many in a week. I think two or three articles is healthy for the subscribers.

However, if I may ask a question, specially upon seeing that there are actually people who post more than 80 posts in their blog. How does this affect one’s SEO? If I put out an average of 3 posts a day, won’t some of the posts be “missed” by Googlebots because they went to the “archives” so fast it didn’t have much time to be in the front page? Thanks.

  • I had 84 posts in May, down from the 108 I posted in April. March saw 96 posts and February was huge with 130.

I’ve found the more I post, the more traffic I receive. Of course, what you are writing about affects the level of traffic — general interest items will get more traffic, but that traffic won’t be “sticky.”

Localized posts that don’t bring in huge numbers of visitors are often the posts that end up bringing in new connections with other local bloggers — which is beneficial in its own way.

  • 237 Posts in May
I run a celebrity Gossip blog so staying current and entertaining is critical to maintain traffic levels. Some of these posts are simply two lines of text with pictures so they don’t take much thinking to create:)

  • Fitz - that can definitely happen if Google doesn’t check often. As long as it checks back daily it shouldn’t be a problem.

  • I’m trying to consistently post once a day, with good, thorough content. The preparation of posts takes a lot of time, especially because I generally have photos to edit, etc.

I didn’t quite make it to one post a day, as I missed two days, but a couple days I did post twice.

I use Blogger to publish to the blog part of my website, and their recent improvement of the “pre-publish” feature is very nice. When I know I’m going to be super busy during the work week, I can pre-publish the weekend before, so the post shows up on the scheduled day. This has been a Very Convenient Improvement to Blogger, and I can rest easy without the pressure of having to tweak a post at the last minute! So I think that feature has helped me keep up a more consistent posting schedule.

  • Okay, 8 may not seem like a lot, but in my defense, my blog only began in May - with the first post being on May 18th.

  • I have a website on personal finance and investment planning.

I usually write in-dept articles, which are quite lengthy. So, the posting frequency is less. I try to post an article once in 4-5 days. So, my posts in May are 7.

And I was surprised to see that I fall in the most popular bracket of 1-10 posts a month!

  • I do one post a day Monday to Friday. I have topics for each day, so that keeps me going. When I don’t feel like writing, I remember that I have committed to myself to write. I always take weekends off though.

  • OOoops should have counted before submitting my result. I had 46 but I “guessed” 35. That’s about average for me, I felt like it was a little less than April (cuz I did the NaBloPoMo thingy).

  • about 100 posts, but we have 3 regular contributors, and 3 occasional ones :)

  • Wow - there are a lot of postings going on out there! I thought we were doing well with 27 in May - HA! We’re just beginners.

  • I pumped out the content in May because I’m really trying to build a solid base. I started my blog in February, but I didn’t really focus intently on it until April.

My goal was to be at 1,000 subscribers by the end of the summer. At the beginning of May, I was at 124. Today, I’m at 577. I think it has a lot to do with my pumping out a ton of content lately. It’s been fun, but I do think I’ll slow down a bit eventually.

  • I had 67 posts in May, but that’s partially because I was keeping two blogs and consolidated them into one last week. I’m also in between day jobs, so the presumption is once I get hired somewhere, I’ll post less frequently than my current 1-2 entries a day.

It’s worth mentioning that despite a few AdSense elements on my blog, I don’t keep a blog for the purpose of making money; whether my perspective changes in the future is anyone’s guess.

  • May I only did 16 posts, I was busy with other projects. This I am aiming for at least 25 posts this month.

  • 4 or 5 in may on this one, i am
not really good writer so i
need some time to make article.

  • Gee, I feel inadequate now, my goal is 2 a week

  • I am posting around 35 to 40 post for past month(May). My Traffic increased a lot when compared to previous month(April)

  • I am posting around 6 posts per day.

  • Mine was pretty normal at 7. I post about 2x per week so I was pretty close to my average.

  • We had 32 in May thanks to doing previews for each of the 16 NCAA baseball regionals during one week. Normally, we have around 20 or so per month, but with the increase in traffic we received in May, we have new vigor to do more this month.

  • I recently post abaout 1 post a day..

  • Gee, that made me think. Which one is my main blog, so I checked what I thought were my two main and entered the the results of the greater of the two. I take it you will use the results for another informative post?

  • I only had 6 in May. I blog when something interest me. Lately I’ve just been very busy and not seen a whole lot going on that I felt blog worthy… unlike in January when I posted 70 items.

  • I posted 125 stories in May at Data Center Knowledge. I’m trying to post 5 to 7 items each weekday, as our site traffic is dominated by “business hours” visitors. I’m a full-time problogger in a sector where there’s a great deal of news right now, so there’s no shortage of things to write about.

As DCK has gained readers in recent months, the site has gotten on the radar of the top companies in the data center field, so there’s been a huge jump in incoming press releases and technology briefings. It makes it easier when the news comes to you instead of having to track it all down … I’m still working the phones and RSS feeds every day for stories, but it makes it easier to fill the pipeline each day.

  • I’ve had 76 posts in May, but for the past 30 days, it was 81 posts, with a few of what I would consider “major” articles included in that tally. I’ve been averaging 88 posts per month lately.

For anyone looking for a really easy way to tally this stuff without having to count, there is a great plug-in for WordPress called Blog Metrics. It’s by Joost de Valk, and automatically keeps track of all sorts of statistics, giving you a really handy birds-eye-view of all the activity on your blog. Check out some of his other really useful plug-ins, too, if you haven’t already:

    Once again, Blog Metrics: http://yoast.com/wordpress/blog-metrics/

  • I should also add, I posted 21 articles for TheHottestGadgets.com on top of the 76 in May at my own blog, http://www.MumboJumboDaily.com... What can I say? I really enjoy writing, communicating and publishing and hope to make a real living at it one day… Which is really what makes some of Problogger’s tips invaluable.

  • I had 50. I post at least ONE post every day. It keeps me honest. ;)

I started my blog mid-July 2007 and May was the month I reached post number 500. Whoohoo!

  • 171 for me in May, which was down by about 10 on the usual amount. Too many, though, hence I’m on hiatus as of June 6 recovering from some work/life/health balance issues (like most here, I still work a full time job on top of blogging).

  • I do not post daily to my blog; but average at least twice per week, sometimes more.

  • 12 for me in May, which was up from 10 in April. I’d like to post every other day, and I’m not as far off from that as I thought. So thanks for asking, Darren!

  • 25 for May which for a college sports blog is an off month. Baseball is going on but the main sports of football and basketball are both in their offseasons.

  • 21 posts in May. June and July’s numbers will be much higher with all the exciting stuff that is about to happen - watch this space! So excitied!!

  • I used to post 7 days a week, twice M-F and then I went to 5 days a week, once a day. I pretty much stick to between 15-20 posts a month.

  • A little over one post a day here. That’s about my average. May was a good month for me - several really good posts that got good traffic :-)

  • Is this thing broke? I see only 9 votes in the results, but over 90 comments …. Anyhow — 15 was my response for my intermittent fasting blog, but I was out of town for the last week of that month.

  • I write on several blogs and manage to get at least 3-5 posts a week on 4 different blogs. Some weeks are more prolific than others depending on travel, speaking and client work.

  • I am completely amazed that folks can post so much! Most of the blogs I read post a couple times per week. Me, I posted 12 times in May. Yikes!

  • 27 in May. I’ve been trying to keep to a definite 5 day a week schedule with 6 days sometimes and having a day off. In May I consistently posted on 6 days and double-posted on one day when I found a news story directly related to what I had posted about earlier in the day so I put in a very short little update!

  • 39 posts for may, not really very good for me so I am boosting up my posts this month seeing as you did 81 posts I am aiming for 90 for June LOL …Got to beat you some how LOL!!!!!

  • 81? That is amazing work considering the quality of your posts. How many of those were did you write in April and schedule for publishing in May?

I managed 32 for May - but it’s hard to gauge an average as my time spent on the blog is sporadic at the best of times.

Although I’m not so sure about how useful this metric is Darren. I find the less my posts resemble “quick news” style blog posts, the more they are worth to the site - in terms of links, immediate traffic from other sites and social networks, and long-term search engine traffic.

My strategy for the site has changed over the last twelve months, and one thing I have learned on the way is if I focus purely on getting a certain number of posts online per day, I end up adding nothing to the conversation.

    YMMV,
    Tim

  • 52 posts in May for Stepcase Lifehack. Do you guys see a direct relationship between the traffic and number of posts?

  • May was the first full month of my new blog.

    46 posts.

    Off to a good start!

  • I had exactly 20 posts, I aim for one a day so that number isn’t on target but I could have done worse. I just reached my 200th post, that’s a lot of writing but I hope to do a lot more.

In comparison my most active month was September of last year, I posted 49 stories. I was pumping out about a couple posts a day, that drained me so I cut back.

I guess in the end consistency is best, I hope to keep up with the one a day on weekdays to keep things steady.

    June 10th, 2008 8:17 pm

i have posted 81 posts in the month of may year 2008

  • I’m off to count my post for May..lol… back soon..

p.s. This blog is crackin dude.. great read..

  • I have been posting 2 post a week for almost 2 years. Works out great for me since I’m in this for the long run. It helps to keep the burnout from happening.

  • We had 87 posts in May and we’re looking like we will end up doing close to the same in June.

We just really started focusing on the blog in April even though it has been in existence since last September.

    Great poll!

  • I put up maybe 70 posts in May. That’s a bit above my average but I’m looking to have more frequent posting.

  • Darren, this is a great thread. I have posted 33 posts in May, and am gonna post on a daily basis to cutewriting. It is my flagship blog. Thanks.

  • Ugh. Did you have to pick May? I was more than half below my usual average. (Busy, busy, busy with non-blog issues.)

  • I published 36 posts during the month of May. My goal when I started my blog in March was a post daily. I’ve missed a couple days, but have written more than one on other days. Some days the ideas/opportunities just don’t stop. Other days are slower and sometimes I have to put a draft on the back burner until it either decides to cooperate with me or I delete if.

  • I had 28 posts, which is a nice number. I’m aiming for 30 this month.

  • 30 from me… i update my blog daily.

  • I’m a full time student, blogging only as a hobby.

    Increased time spent on assignments
= less time available for hobbies (only 1 post for May)

And after a day working on the computer, the last thing I want to do in my spare time (if any) is sit at the computer!

  • I used to really push to get a post every “work” day and take the weekend off…

Now I push to do 4-6 posts a week on any day…

In may I had 20 posts and feel that is about right for my Preaching Instruction blog…

  • Looking at my stats from April and May is a bit scary.

I doubled the number of posts in May to 31 (did 15 in April). May’s visitor count was up by 3000 unique visitors, but my bounce rate in May went to 62% (was at 13% in April)

There were also nearly 15,000 more actions taken in April (the slower posting month) than in May.

Does this mean I should post less?

  • I typically publish about 115 posts per month. Most of those are one paragraph summaries of news stories with links to the source. I write feature (full-length) news and opinion pieces about twice per week - one on my busiest day of the week and one mid-week to keep traffic flowing.

  • May was by far my most prolific month to date. As I narrow my focus (something I’m trying to do organically), it seems my content actually increases. It’s easier to be passionate and creative when your parameters are defined than when you have a tabula rasa.

  • I started in May. As I progress to getting more organized(ha is that possible) my goal is 12 - 15 posts per month. Thanks for all the encouragement in your posts.
    Glenda
