Win a Copy of WordPress for Dummies
Over the next five days I’m going to run a little daily competition here at ProBlogger.
The prize – each day from Monday through to Friday I’ll be giving away an autographed copy of WordPress For Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson.
I’ve seen some parts of this book already (the full thing is winging it’s way from the US as I write this) and it is a great read and well worthwhile the purchase for those starting out with and wanting to extend their knowledge of a blog platform that more ProBlogger readers use than any other.
How do you Win a Copy?
It’s simple – all you have to comment on ProBlogger over the next week. Each day of the week I’ll choose one random comment left on that particular day (on any post on the blog). That commenter will win a copy of the book – it is as simple as that.
The comments do need to be legitimate (ie – on topic and adding something to the conversation) – but you can enter as many times as you like – each comment that you leave is an ‘entry’.
I’ll announce the five winners at the end of the week.

This is a great offer Darren!
The title seems a little offending though! For Dummies!

I would consider all books in the “dummy” series outstanding for starters and, occasionally, non-starters, a quick desk reference thing.
I’m in, too!

I switched to WordPress back in September. I haven’t really read any of the documentation on it yet as I have just sorta fumbled my way around and figured it out so this book might help me out a bunch.
Plus getting the ProBlogger’s autograph would be pretty cool.

I just saw this book on Amazon, and I was wondering how “for dummies” it actually is. Has anyone had a chance to pick up this book and take a look? What do you think?

I saw an amusing cartoon about the For Dummies series captioned “Don’t they write books for smart people anymore?”
Thanks for the shot Darren. Though I’m thinking I’d need the “Wordpress for the Extra Special Dummy”.

Scariest part on this competition is that I might actually win the book and learn something new while reading it. However, I am willing to take my changes and join the competition.

I don’t know how helpful this book will be to me, but I probably could learn a few things from it. I’ve been lucky lately, so I might as well try. If the book turns out to be not so helpful, I could just put up a contest on my blog.
By the way, thank you for this great competition, Darren.

This is such a great news for all those newbie bloggers and to get started in posting some comment on other people blog.
“dummies”…. well don’t take it to heart. Everyone has to start some where. This when you don’t really know much and will be reading, learning alot.

Darren, I do need to have this book since I’m a dumb Wordpress user :-). I am definitely in.
Somehow I tried to buy one last weekend through Amazon but apparently they don’t ship to Bali (Indonesia). So, if i or someone in my country win, how can we pick up the book? Do you ship to our country?

Darren, I take it you’re going to do a full review of the book once you get it? Much as I’d like the book myself, I’d be just as interested to hear what the ‘pros’ think of it…

Nice Darren, contests are great. I can only imagine a ton of spam (though they probably won’t look like spam) comments to increase their chances in this contest since every comment counts towards an entry. I guess it doesn’t really matter since you blog will be uber active LOL

I would love to see stats of how these contests increase your stats. For those of us reading you in a reader I suppose page views get increased when we jump out to comment. And some people will write about the contest which will drive new readers here (maybe you have captured them all already!). I would think contests where you ask people to write an article would be best, but maybe not since not as many people would do it. Very easy to write a comment.

Oh, wonderful synchronicity! I’ve been pondering a move from Blogger, and today opened a WordPress account so I can get a feel for it – winning the book would be perfect.

Another great Darren Rowse promotion!
Even if I don’t win a book, participating in the competition – and regular reading of Problogger – is beneficial.
I’ve been reading some of the other “top” professional bloggers. So far, none of the others that I’ve looked at quite measure up.

Great contest, Darren. I have been exploring new platforms. I admit that while I would like the flexibility that Wordpress offers, I am a little daunted by the time involved in learning a new software.

I’ve never met a Dummies series book that didn’t have something useful to teach, no matter the subject – and the sheer flexibility of WordPress means there’s always more to be discovered / learned about it. What a great prize!

I’M A WORDPRESS DUMMY, I need the book, choose me.
Seriously, books on wordpress are way overdue even though developments are taking place at light speed there’s a huge market for wordpress development books, not only for dummies, but for more advanced topics like building themes from scratch or even what goes on under the hood of the core software.
I think the person who comes out with the first good book in the department could make a killing and with so many people out there who know alot about this subject I’m so surprised there’s nothing as far as I know.
So, all you worpress guru’s out there. If you’ve written a significant amount of content in this department on yoru blog already, why not work on putting it into a wordpress textbook of some sort. I’ll buy it if it’s user-friendly.
I find the codex to be less user friendly than I’d expect it to be.

December 10th, 2007 11:11 pm
I guess it can be considered a good thing when a “dunnies” book is written on a topic, meaning it has come over the horizon into the mainstream.
One problem with this series is the variety of topics and that some offer more information than others. For example, Salesforce.com for Dummies was an extremely thorough book, as compared to others.
Just another reason why I would like to win the contest so I can see it for myself!

December 11th, 2007 12:40 am
Darren:
How ironic that you’d be running a contest for this book because number one, when I decided to move from Blogger.com to Wordpress, I ended up choosing one of Lisa’s WP themes for Adversity University.
Number two, shortly after I adopted her theme, I signed up to receive the book before it was released. As soon as it came out, I received my copy and read it in one day. Yes, ONE DAY. That tells you how busy I really am, right?
In short, it was excellent. I truly enjoyed the book. Not only that but I learned a few extra tips. She is truly a great writer who writes from the heart.
So don’t pick me to get the book cuz I already have a copy but hey, if you wanted to share my blog with the rest of the world because Lisa designed, it that wouldn’t hurt. :)
There you go Darren! Enjoy your day.

While I’m sure that this is a great book, I wonder about its long-term usefulness. Since I’ve been using WordPress, it’s been upgraded about 9 times. Plug-ins and widgets are changing daily. Themes spring up and fall apart overnight. How does a static book keep up with something that dynamic? I suppose that for persons wanting to set up a WordPress site with only what bells and whistles are available now and never upgrade, this might be an appealing alternative, but beyond that? Still, if I win the book I am sure I’ll give it a gander and learn from it.

Another great ProBlogger contest … I could really use this book as I try to take my blogging to the proverbial “next level.” The For Dummies series gets some jabs because of the title, but the ones I have used in the past have actually been full of smart advice.
Thanks, Darren, for offering this as a prize and I hope I am among the lucky winners! I am still reaping the benefits of the consulting prize I won from IttyBiz.com during the anniversary extravaganza, and if this is one tenth as helpful as Naomi has been then I need it desperately!

Well, this is a great contest, especially for me as I’m considering giving up the free blog to have one hosted for real. I’d like to stay with WordPress as it is what I think would be most comfortable for me.

HI Darren, I have just started out with wordpress, so I would love to win a copy of this book.
I also have a question: I am thinking of moving from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and was wondering if you have any tips for how to choose a blog host? I know WP has some recommendations, but I have no idea how to compare the criteria or estimate things like space required, bandwidth etc, or what other features are important. Maybe the WP for Dummies book would answer those questions, but I thought you might also be able to provide some tips.
Thanks!

Wonderfully sounding book. Wordpress, the software, is for dummies like me anyway. I’m cut-and-paste, pick-and-click blogger, no IT knowledge at all.
I have no doubt the book ‘Wordpress for Dummies’ will teach me much.

I guess it’s a sign of hitting the big time when they create a “dummies” guide for your product!

LOL. Now why do they have to call it “Wordpress for Dummies”?????? I think I prefer the “training wheels” title that Snoskred (www.snoskred.org) is writing at the moment. However, I think I might kind of qualify as a “dummy” when it comes to Wordpress. I have just started using them so a resource like this sure would be wonderful timing!!! :-) To be honest I wasn’t aware such a book existed!

Hey Darren,
Although one of the comments said that the title is offending, I think that the for dummies books is very informative and intelligent, I had the opportunity to co-write a book for them (still in the making) and I read and own over 50 of the dummies books and I’m lucky enough to know a couple of authors personally (Thanks to facebook). However I heard a lot about Lisa and can’t wait to read her wordpress for dummies book.

This is a great idea and I am sure you will get more comments than ever. I have one question though. Is the book about wordpress.org or wordpress.com or both?

Today I’m going to register a domain and install WordPress. I’d really like to read the Dummies book, but for now, I’ll leave WP on default settings and worry about tweaking later.

Sometimes I feel really dummy working on my blog, specially when i’m trying to do some business arround it (the so called enterprise 2.0). A litle help would be very welcome, since very often I really get a hard time reading FAQs and foruns trying to find the solutions for my problems. The guys at the wordpress support team will feel very released If I win the contest!

I’ve been using Wordpress for two years now, both the free version and then Wordpress.org since June this year. It’s the only blogging platform I’ve ever used. But I still consider myself a ‘dummy’ on Wordpress. Every week I find out at least one new thing to help make it work better for me. So this book sounds like it might have been written for me.

I’m so glad you’re doing this! I am actually considering doing a similar give-away. My question: How did you decide to do this to increase comments vs. increase subscribers to your blog or newsletter? Also, how would you do this in a joint venture with other blogs? Enquiring minds wanna know :)

I’m a new user to WordPress. When I was setting up TeamRCIA.com, I had trouble getting the pages to look right in IE6. All other browsers were fine. I spent a couple of hours teaching myself more html code and WordPress goodness. No luck. So I posted my problem as a project in Elance.com. I got four bids within an hour, ranging from $250 to $50. I gave the job to the low bidder, eSCe Gigaprojects. They were fast, efficient, and friendly. And now my site looks great in any browser.

I would really like to have this book. As you can see from my website, I have Wordpress in my ‘news’ section but it isn’t set up properly (someone did it for me) and I need to be able to figure out how to make it work the way it’s supposed to. I have tried the Wordpress forum but find it very confusing because it assumes you know something about it and how it works, to begin with. So I would love to have Wordpress for Dummies because it would help me to figure this out. Thanks,
Richard Sparks

In more than 4 years I had published over 2000 posts on Blogger and had more than 5500 comments on Haloscan before I moved to WordPress earlier this month. The import of all that content was tricky and time consuming but it really was worth every bit of effort.
The book sounds like a great way for me to further extend my ‘new blog’s’ capabilities.

I have to agree with some of the comments. There isn’t much books specifically on wordpress. There is none at a major bookstore I’ve visited today. Only 3 such books that can be found in amazon.com. Kudos to Lisa and Matt.
There is quite a bit of resouces on wordpress that can be found on the internet. But nothing can beat a good book written just on wordpress.
It will be a treasure to those who are starting or about to start blogging with wordpress.
It will be a great christmas present for me as I am getting to move on from blogger to wordpress soon.
hmm… 143 comments so far… a new world record for the most number of comments for a single post??

Okay, I am in need of a “you-can-do-it” pep talk!?
I feel driven to create a platform for my daughter (who is an awesome author) to share her insights, etc…. We want to have the ability for others to contribute also. I was guided to Wordpress by someone, but I feel so out of my comfort zone!
1. Is this really something that a middle-aged (oooh, I hate that lable, but I guess that is what I am!) mom can really create?!
2. Is Wordpress the right format?
Any legitimate input from someone experienced in this field and with wordpress is highly valued – as long as it is positive, or at least kind!!
Thanks!

I will soon be in the process of moving my ClubMom sponsored blog (TypePad) to a self-hosted WordPress blog. I’ll be getting some help with it, but the day-to-day maintenance will be up to me. This “dummy” will need all the help she can get. So if I don’t win a copy, I’ll be buying one over at Amazon. Thanks Darren!

Since I didn’t win it, I decided I would buy it sometime after Christmas. Yesterday, when shopping in a mall in Madison, Wisconsin, I looked through the very skimpy computer book section at a Waldenbooks store and, surprise! there it was. One copy only. I snapped it up, of course, and will be reading it when we get back home to Arkansas. :)
