Using Images to Take Your Posts to a New Level

With millions of blog posts being added to the web each day – bloggers need to consider more than just the content that they are posting and think about how they can design their posts to grab attention.

One element of this post design is adding images to posts.

Images enhance posts in any number of ways including by giving posts a visual point of interest, grabbing attention (great for making your RSS feed readers stop and read), drawing people’s eye down a post beyond the first few lines, illustrating examples, giving your blog a more personal touch, engaging the emotions and senses of readers and giving posts more authority.

In this video I look at some of these reasons and then give some examples of different types of images that can enhance a post (I’ve been experimenting this week with using some screen shots and moving screen captures in this video which I hope gives it more interest – I’m still learning my video editing though – so be patient with me!).

A few posts from the ProBlogger archives for further reading on different aspects of this post:

Well, I use images, but you just convinced me to never use video of myself on my blog. I don’t want to take the chance of chasing off readers.

Geez, man, frankly, you are just plain ugly. Cool accent, but do yourself a favor and at least get a piece for your next vblog. Better yet, just do voice over and spare us all.

Where should i get the pictures and photos from? Can i just get them from anywhere on the net? are they copy-righted?

    Hi all,
Thank you Darren for the great entry. I started a blog last week that covers consumer generated media analysis and I have one question that I am having trouble with in regards to pics and videos.
How do I know if I’m allowed to use a logo, photo or video without causing any copyright infringement. For example, if I used yahoo’s logo for an entry in which I was discussing yahoo’s top ten search queries for 2007, would that be a copyright infringement?
In addition, what sites would you recommend for getting free photos and logo’s for my future blog posts?

    Thank you

  10. Thanks for the tips! I love to have a post with an image. I just did it cause it gave me juice to run, but now I see value too, it is kind of like visual merchandising, you get a taste, decide if you like it and then buy so to speak!

I e-mailed them regarding a supplier and they said they were legit and were received praise from customers. Is this legit?
