Forget About Page Rank and Build a Better Blog

Search Engine Optimization, Video Posts 129 comments

I get a lot of questions about Google’s Page rank and when it will update again.

I’m not sure if people think I look like Matt Cutts or whether they think I’ve got some inside word - but the question hits my inbox quite a lot.

So what’s my response these days?

Forget about when and if Page Rank will update and spend your time building a better blog!

You see - Google are in the business of helping their users find great, authoritative and credible content on any given topic and I’m increasingly becoming convinced that the more you spend time building sites that have that content the more highly you’ll be ranked in Google.

Sure, you need to know some good basic Search Engine Optimization principles because it will help your blog reach it’s potential - but don’t be obsessed with it.

  • Great video again, Darren. I see forum with threads about the upcoming PR update with some >1500 posts and 6-figure views on it.

I´d think, the time people spend reading and writing these forums posts, would far better be invested in more and better content.

  • Man, I just want to say that I love your new videos, Darren.

What can I say? Great advice as usual.

I’ll take it all to heart.

I liked the section where you describe a quality blog. At the moment I’m trying to be all informative, entertaining, and fun on my blog.

I haven’t seen any kind of growth in community, but I have started a list with AWEBER and I like it. It’s kind of like automated blogging.

I don’t plan on affiliate marketing hard core, but I just want to provide “insider content” and grow popularity. I’m also not just as good as my last post with the auto-responder.

I’m hoping it’ll bring readers back to my blog on a daily basis.

I’m just taring up a rant now. You don’t have to read if you don’t want to.

I like the idea of using an auto-responder more than using a feed, although I’m using both to try and grow a sense of community.

For one, I work a 40-hour a week day job. I’m not always going to have something to post every single day.

With the auto-responder, it’s all automated, so I know quality content is going out on a daily basis or every other day basis linking readers back to my site.

Anyway, I just thought I might share my thoughts on how I’m trying to grow a sense of community.

Oh yeah, and I’m trying to be more out-spoken and opinionated, not just purely informational. Hopefully some people will at least hate me and read anyways. Haha.

Wow. Sorry for the blog post on your blog.

    See ya.

  • You’re so right Darren. I keep seeing all over the net with bloggers wondering if their PR is going up or down. Forums are abuzz with it, frankly its just all nonsense to me.

I think the only reason why most of them are obsessed is because of the ability to sell their blog easier to advertisers. If we stop caring about PR, sooner or later the effect will trickle down. Then the only reason you will get higher in the search engines or gain more advertising revenue, if that’s what you’re after, is by the content you put out.

  • This comes back to your repeated suggestion, that “the majority of your time should be spent on creating quality content for your blog”. It makes sense that unless you have that quality content, then you won’t rank that well in the search engines. Thanks for the reminder Darren and for keeping us on track!

  • I suspect PageRank is a very small part of the overall algorithm anyway. Have a feeling many of the pro SEOs out there would probably agree.

  • I just had to read the title to agree with you - page rank is not important, what is important is the content you have and the keywords and title tags you use. A fact is that some sites with low PRs (PR 1-2) do more better in the results, than the higher PR sites. Keyword usage and density both influence ranking and Google will look for these two factors and in most cases, the page with a lower pagerank (1-2) come what may still be given a better ranking.

  • You hit the nail on the head Darren!

I think there are definitely people out there who are getting so wrapped up in SEO and Page Rank they neglect the real issue. Which like you said is building a quality blog.

Oh yes and according to this source Page Rank is being updated.

  • Good call Darren. If Google killed off PageRank, it would be one less useless statistic to bother tracking. The obsession with PR, AdSense and easy traffic generation (i.e. Social Media) are killing quality on a lot of blogs.

  • It’s pretty obvious advice but I suppose it needs to be said now and again. There are too many people looking for quick fixes and ignoring the simple thing that makes sites popular: useful content.

  • Well said Darren. So many people post lots and lots of small posts linking to others websites, instead of dreaming up their own new interesting content with their own slant on the topic.

While if they focused their time on the content and really write it well google gives you much much higher search showings. My blog is now about 2 months old and I’m already recieving some good traffic from google. With lots of those being number one in the search already.

    Content, content, content.

    all the best

  • Hurrah…! Well said. It is people who read blogs, not algorithms that calculate spurious figures like “page rank”. Focus your blog on your readers and it will succeed. Get side-tracked into worrying about page rank and SEO and you’ll lose focus. Then you’ll lose readers. Thinking “readers first” is the key to successful blogging.

  • I have a SEO zealot that has been trying to get me on the page rank horse for a couple of weeks now. I think I might just send this article to him :) Thanks for writing a defense for me!

  • Page Rank only works and affect for Google. It won’t affect the SERP on Yahoo, MSN, etc.

  • Hi Darren

    Great video.

Everyone seems to be obsessing about it as you have said, one thing I picked up early on from reading your blog was how important content is, and I have stuck to this.

Now I don’t spend a lot of time worrying about what page rank I will get (as this is my first one) but i do check the predicted one from time to time, using the predictor over at iwebtool.

According to the tool it is showing a predicted page rank of 6 for my site (i don’t know how accurate this tool is), if i get a page rank of 6 i will be amazed, I guess I will just have to wait and see.

  • Just a heads up that your video does not play in Google Reader.

  • You are right but PR is also important isnt? As PR=Traffic

  • i was just getting on my computer to do alittle brainstorming and look what destracted me…your post about writing a great blog. Thanks for the reminder and tips but stop destracting me with your fantastic info. I gotta get to work.

  • Mahesh Mohan, PageRank is one part of Google’s algorithm. One single part, and there are probably hundreds of other more important factors.

Plus, as someone said above, there’s also Yahoo and MSN, and even ask.com - all of which have no clue what PageRank is.

  • Hi Darren,

Just watched you video clip…all I can say is sooo true! As a matter of fact that’s why I switched my hosting company to the one I am currently with, they do all the SEO, Page Ranking, submission for me, and all I have to do is focus on quality content! I’ve been telling everyone about this company! The feed back I’ve been getting back Darren is great! I can really say this is the best yet kept secret that is slowly being discovered by bloggers! When every you get a chance Darren check it out!

There’s ton’s of ways to make money blogging…but if you have not tools, or the rights tools, you’re just spinning your wheels…here let me help by giving you this great website’s link, I’ve used all types of so called software, and nothing compares to this, check it yourself and you be the judge!

  • Yes, it can be forever to get into google rankings. You have to have tons of links and info. If you do not sell anything on your website and your not with Adwords, its hard to get good ranking.

You can put your website or blogs in other popular blog sites to get a fairly good ranking if those sites have good rank on google, where others can look you up. This is the best way to get noticed in my opinion. Blogcatalog is good too. You can also go into google and look up websites that will let you add your URL for free. Put it in as many blogs as you can. You need to give it a couple years before it starts paying off. Don’t be in a rush. My website/blogs are all about how to tell the difference between real authentic designer bags compared to fake ones. Its an informative website and/or blog that can save buyers lots of money from getting ripped off unaware when they go to buy Fendi, Gucci, Prada, Juicy, Coach, and other bag/bags. Its all about how to spot an authentic designer bag. Just get your blog out there in google land as much as you can. The website SQUIDOO is a great way to get noticed. Im at http://www.freewebs.com/fakefendihandbags

Just get your website out as much as you can. It will pay off eventually.

  • Very good video! I agree 100%, what’s the point on concentrating on only SEO when content is key. Setting up a foundation to work with is much more important to start of with then concentrating on pagerank which of course is still an important factor.

    Thanks for the video!

  • excellent video Darren, it’s good practice to keep your eye on the prize, but even a good page rank doesn’t mean there is good content on the site. working on making your content reader friendly will maintain an install base of readers after the page rank catches on

  • We shouldnt be too concern with PR. Not many bloggers know that PR can be reduced. I went from nothing to PR3 and then crash back to nothing.

  • True enough I just hope people quit checking their stats every few seconds and focus on content + seo more

  • Amen, Darren,

Like the movie, “Field Of Dreams”, says, “Build it, and they will come”.

Content is still king! I don’t see that changing.

I agree with some of the other comments, spend your time on your content…not on stats and rankings. Getting stressed about stats and rankings, can stifle your creativity.

  • Well said! Like they say “content is king”.

  • I agree with you…
    Forget about Page Rank…
Just do your blog differently and interesting..

  • Great post, Darren. I really wouldn’t be shocked myself if Google were purposely holding back a PageRank update or coming up with some new system. They’ve already made it very clear that they don’t like their search engine being gamed, and that seems to be what is happening.

  • Hey Darren,

I was obsessed with trying to get my pagerank higher. After months trying, I just concentrate on putting great content in blog.

Thanks for reassuring all of us.

    Cheers,

  • The trouble is, the blog playing field is now not level, due to the delays in PR being updated.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some enterprising Aussie blogger files a complaint with the ACCC re Google not updating the page rank. Either you give it to everyone - and therefore allow everyone to be competitive, or you give it to no one.

Is Google breaking Australian law? I’m not a lawyer, I don’t know, but I do know they are costing a lot of bloggers money and the resentment people feel towards them is quite justified, in my opinion.

There’s no reason to mess people around like this. Why can’t they let people know what is going on? Why all the secrecy? Why do they have to let everyone speculate and guess? The uncertainty only makes people more angry.

    Snoskred

  • I totally agree. PageRank means nothing if your content is nothing but crap. Good sites naturally gain high PageRanks, and those who blab about nothing more than SEO normally stay low.

  • You need to fix the buffering in your player. Tweak it so it loads 10 seconds data first, then plays then loads, then plays and so forth. This will help people with slower connection in not getting choppy audio and video. It shouldn’t be too hard to fix.

  • Great post, as usual.

I have to say that I have obsessed over Google and Google Page Rank, in the past. I wasted far too much brain power on something that didn’t really matter because I was already giving my best shot at great content, which is of course what matters, but…

… I still find myself drifting back into that way of thinking so it is good to get a kick in the pants to remind me to keep my brain power heading in the right direction.

Thanks again and keep them coming.

  • A lot of people think that the pr is the holy cow in this buisness. absolutely wrong! great article! i think to write good articles (like this one) is much better as one good backlink.

  • Your video’s advice is spot on!

Build it well and they will come. And keep coming.

Just look at problogger, with it’s 32,000 subscribers.

  • Darren,

This post hit home with me. I have gotten the same questions…and love your answer.

Pay attention to your business, but don’t obsess with the technical stuff.

    Nicely done.

  • I would normally not be worried about page rank, but I noticed that the amount of traffic Google sends my site dropped significantly at the beginning of September. I’m not sure if this is natural (my niche is fitness and health and maybe people are less concerned about that at the end of summer) but I sure would like to know if it’s something I did wrong.

    Gal

  • Darren! Thanks by reminding us! It has became obvious, isn`t it? But being a freelancer is so diverse that we often forget obvious things. Because we fall too deep into things that do not really matter.

A funny clip, anyway - good point we should all put it in action. Google is very serious about its vision, so optimizers will soon close their stores…

    D.

  • It’s so true. You can’t really second guess big G. Just build a quality blog. Google looks for quality websites. So make it happen and think logically. Pagerank is irrelevant - I have a PR0 site that is ranked 3rd on G for a massive keyword, and its bringing in great ad revenue.

  • Amen Darren. Exactly what is most important. Everyone is obsessed with figuring out how to boost their pageRank and in the end, it comes down to quality of their content. Great video post that will remain timeless in it’s worth.

  • Great Video,But you must need atleast a PR-2 so that people will subscribe you….But ultimately i go for good content,Since content matters a lot

  • Although O don’t place a lot of emphasis on Pagerank it is an indicator of how my SEO is going on my site. Or is it? Yahoo, MAN and Google all have their own secret sauce.

    Jason

  • You’re right. I don’t even know what my page rank is! And quite frankly I dont care at this point. My blog has only been around for a couple of months; I can’t expect to be a PR10 right away! My goal is to quit my day job, not get a high page rank…I will document if the 2 really go hand in hand.

  • The amount of time webmasters are spending worried about when the next PageRank will update, they all could be producing some quality content for their blogs.

Great video once again Darren! I have really started to enjoy these weekly small video segments. Keep’em going!

  • Great video post as usual, Darren. Thank you.

  • Absolutely agree with the idea. But i was thinking that this must be happen for every new blogger like me and sometimes this is good to keep you motivated on blogging especially when you managed to get your page rank improved day to day. But once again, when the time comes for you to upgrade your level to be a pro blogger at that time you must change the way you blogging and for sure page rank is not a big issue anymore..

  • Yep, exactly my thoughts Darren. So many people are wasting their time going over every little tag and obsessing over every linkback and stats.. waiting for Google to make a move.

I’m just building blogs one day at a time. I have over 15 of them but mostly concentrating on one. For m, it’s all about content. What a blogger can bring to his readers. Period.

Thanks again for you great blog!

    Insane Seb

  • you are absolutly right. a good blog is the best thing to have good traffic, but it`s easy to talk about pr is not so important when you got a pr 6. i just have a new blog and realy can`t wait to the next google pr run because that`s gona be my first one.

  • Hi Darren, I’m new to reading/listening to your posts and I would just like to say that I love it all. Great advice, thanks very much. I would also have to agree about the current obsession about SEO and pagerank. Not as in everyone else is obsessed but I myself as a blogger have become obsessed with the whole nature of a high pagerank., I dont think that Google are going to change the type of ranking system they use today. What I do think is that they are going to change the way in which pages are ranked through the current page rank system. I have had over 80 links in Google for my site http://www,davesblogidge.com and then one day it just went down to 70 links. Thats a change of 10 links which can be the difference between finding 100 visitors a day and 70 visitors a day. Get the system updated A.S.A.P Google!!

  • Great video. For me you are the real problogger, the best one. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge.

  • Darren,

I am loving your video posts. Can you fulfill my small request. The request is Could you please put your video posts as a downloadable video format along with the flash video?

This is because the net speed is quite slow at my place and watching embedded videos is like watching images loading with broken sound. If you provide a link that says “Download Video” then it can be very helpful for people with low connection speed to download the entire video and enjoy it at leisure later.

The embedded video has to get loaded everytime the page is refreshed, so please see if you can do this. I am sure It would bring you more traffic.. lol

  • If content is still the king, why the hell high content sites still come on 4-5 (or above) pages on google?, search on any good topic and you will see blogs and sites hovering with adsense ads on them, now come around 4-5 page and you will see big libraries, .orgs, and much much more. The thing is google want us and is somewhat make us depend on its f***ing engine.

  • Hi there! Greate videos! Keep up the good work.

But when it comes to PR, i have to say, that it is pretty darn important what yours is. If you got an high PR, it`s more likely you`d get alot more hits in the search engines. But then again, it`s ONLY in the search engines that PR is important.

  • It seems something is starting to roll, john chow got his page rank lowered from 6 to 5. But the question is whether the pagerank update is starting or if this was just another penalty for john from googles side.

Anyway pagerank isn’t that important right now, the people who make such a big deal about this, usually behave in this matter as they want higher PR to make more money from payperpost or some similar networks.

  • great video and great advice as usual

  • In the beginning I used to be obsessed with it because everyone else was. I was like if they are worrying about it let me find about more information. Now I realize it really doesn’t matter as much because I go to blogs because of their content not their page rank.

  • Good point, you should build a great blog… BUT (IMHO) page rank is manditory if you’re blogging… no matter how great your blog is, if nobody knows about it, how can they ever find it?

  • Thanks for the info Darren, great video. I totally agree with you. Content is still the crown rocker,

  • Thank you. I tend to get really worked up about why my page rank isn’t going up. When I read stuff like this it makes me remember, I am not building a page rank, I am building a website.

I need to remember to focus on that which I can control.

  • I definetly agree with your comment. To create a good content is not easy but it’s worth it. I try to create content in business cash management and hopefully readers will appreciate how I spent 10 years just to fine tune the business cash management system….and its free!!

  • forget about PR and build a better blog! easier said than done!

aren’t we all working on this unique blog which is fun and entertainment and attractive and yet, the big interaction like at darren’s blog is missing?!

i would love to wake up to several comments in my inbox awaiting moderation. my highest comment number ever is probably 10. however, when i see other hawaii blogs doing so called contests for winning a big prize when readers sign up for their feed, i think that cannot be it. people signing up for my feed because they can win something?!!!!

OK i keep writing content…till people sign up for its feed because they like it! aloha, pua

  • Thanks for the solid advice. I have become obsessed with my pages PR and SEO. I get disappointed everytime my site is not performing as desired. Thank you for the encouragement!

  • Wise words. It seems that most people are more worried about getting a high PR instead of writing quality posts.

    Great video, Darren.

  • I have been saying the same thing in the forum about PR. My take is first build something that is useful to your visitors. But ad dollars are based on PR and people do pay a lot of attention to PR

  • Darren that was great..the video!

  • Great advice Darrin. Just focus on the content, and let page rank do it’s job. It will eventually catch up to you.

    Keep it up…

    Jim Moon

  • Why even pay attention to PR period. Look at your stats, if they’re moving up, keep on doing what you’re doing.

  • @mike your are rigth
but 4me it was time :)

    @Darrin
thx, but i hope to get it… :(

  • You are so right on with this. Content wins everytime and will be becoming more and more important as the blogosphere grows and I believe it is poised for more growth soon. The largest number of babyboomers joined the blogosphere in 2007! Can you imagine a blogosphere filled with retired doctors, lawyers, financeers etc, etc? They are fixin’ to retire soon so hang onto your safety belts.

  • Thanks Darren for your input and suggestions on this topic. While I think what you say is sound advice, it is difficult to accept due to the overwhelming number of related blogs that we compete with for exposure.

  • Hello Darren,
    just saw the video,

i think its just about getting the right balance and putting things into perspective, and i think unique original quality content will always win .keep up the good work mate! :)

  • Hmm, well it seems to have been updated lately (since March this year at least), because my blog is new (http://blog.bull3t.me.uk/) and it has a PageRank of 4 - so it is still used by Google and will get updated, I never really worry about it myself.

  • I have PR 0 but, my blog and my websites already are working like having 4-5 !!! on Google rankings

  • I buy/sell a lot of existing wesbites and I’ve never seen a real relationship between income earnings and PageRank, especially when it comes to using Adsense on a high PR page.

    NUK

  • Nice article. I agree with your advice, it’s better to build a better blog than to concentrate on your pagerank. Common sense really, but a lot of people don’t see that!

  • I try to create content in business cash management and hopefully readers will appreciate how I spent 10 years just to fine tune the business cash management system

  • *delurks*
You have no idea how much I’m hoping Page Rank goes the way of the dinosaurs….. People obsess over it to the point of having nothing real or helpful to say anymore. The focus is no longer on the customer, or reader.
Most of the people in my target market are even lucky if they know how to move around the internet, much less what a Page Rank is….

  • Stumbled across your conversation about page rank while doing a bit of research about it online. I think I’ll find something a bit different, and better, to occupy my time now that I’ve read through the comments :)

  • Very Correct PR = Traffic = More Money from Adsense

  • I see Darren that your Home page has a PR of 6 but your BLoghas a PR of 0. Do you know why that is?

  • Thanks Darren, I think you just brought me back to my senses too. Quality-How did I ever forget that.

  • Many people are obsessed with PageRank. The key is to make your website more user friendly by providing better content. It’s good to know the basis of PageRank but don’t dwell into it too much as that is not what the readers want from you website.

  • Hello, I agree.I sterted blogging to see if I could one day use my blog to make money.I havent made a cent yet, lol…but I made something far more valuable, I made lots of good friends online. For me, the page rank is not a thing I even think about…which may be a good thing, seeing as my page rank just stays the same, lol, even when everyone else rank rises.Still, it doesnt upset me…I have learnt that the importance of blogging is far deeper than page rank :)
    Thanks so much

    Jesse..

  • The basic idea lies in what google says about SEO too
“Make sites for user and not for search engines”, an over obsesivenes over pagerank or SEO google is all likely to strike it down.

    M.

  • But high PR blog can sell more quality sponsored ads.

    —————-

  • Blog for the sake of blogging. Blog because you love it. PR, traffic, and money will follow if you do things right.

  • Darren,
Thank you for your insite on this. I like the idea that maybe if we get away from page rank we can get on with what really matters and that is doing what we love. I want people to come to my website to read, enjoy and interact. That is what it is all about. I have been struggling to up my page rank and I guess I really forgot what was important. Thanks again!! http://www.jimmysentertainment.com

  • Google PR is such a fickle thing. One day you can be PR6 and next day you are PR4. Sadly it seldom works the other way though…

  • I also agree with making nice valuable content rich blog or website. PR is a google algorithm which we all use. Sometimes it may get delayed but it always come right back up and give us enjoyable moment.
Most of all as long as you bring valuable content to your internet audience, you get good value in the long run.

  • I feel SO MUCH BETTER.

I was beginning to think I was a lone wolf, ambivalent as I’ve been about my puny blog stats (though obviously curious enough to sniff around a site like ProBlogger). Am I the only one who thinks that a good blog always doesn’t happen overnight? That it sometimes needs to cook long and slow?

In any event, it takes work. And I don’t mean marketing …

  • Darren I agree with the idea of providing really great content for readers - and your blog is a perfect example of this.

My blog went from PR4 to PR3 last year for some inexplicable reason but I retained a top ten position for Google searches for my targeted keyword…at least for a few months.

Now I find that my Squidoo lens, which is targeting the same keyword, has supplanted my blog and taken over a top 10 position in Google…and my blog has dropped through the cracks.

This has happened despite the fact that I update my blog weekly and have not updated my Squidoo lens since July 2007.

I have another Squidoo lens, though, that I update daily and it is now a PR5 and holds no2 position for my keyword. In this Squidoo lens I am trying to do what you suggest, “helping … users find great, authoritative and credible content” :
    Squidoo Marketing

  • Yes, we think like this too but advertisers (I guess) don’t think like that. I don’t like PR, but it is still important for us.
I want a new world without PR! :-)
    Nice article :)

  • Well, better blog post is a good things. But my blog just got PR boost from zero to 4! however I’m very happy since this is for the first time I have a blog with “good” PR :-P

  • Yes, content is king. SEO can go a long way, but I agree that people with websites should spend more time building a great site with great content that people will find useful!

  • alright, I agree but we cannot blame the other if they still cannot disregard the value of PR specially those who use their blog to earn money. when the time comes that advertisers realise that PR doesn’t affect traffic that much, only then can these PR-crazy bloggers forget about PR.

  • I agree is most important to have a better blog than high pagerank.
    encuentraTuJob

  • Its nice that page rank is quite possibly insignificant. I’ve noticed people respond much better when you have a page rank of four or five though. In the beginning it seemed that was a cardinal sin , ohhh no page rank weeelllll.
    thanks cool post.

  • great advice. thanks again

  • I think that you’re absolutely right. Guys, webmasters, let us focus on building a quality web site or weblog regardless of the ranking.

Quality content will force your visitors to visit again, and again.

Be specific ~ dedicate your time to one website that interests you and a subject that you really master. You should be on the fine track after a while, months, or years. But it will pay off when you have an impressive pagerank and your site or blog receives high traffic. It’s worth it! :)

    Thanks!

  • Hmmm… I agree. Sometimes, I find that people become obsessed with page rank. If one’s site is of high quality, a high page rank is something that generally results.

On a few blogs that I have read the poster does not provide outbound links about the topic of the post, for fear of losing page rank!
    Unbelievable!

  • Thank you! You saved me from almost worrying back there. I’d be concentratin’ on my content now, rather than getting traffic with PR.

    Thanks a bunch!

  • Google PR is such a fickle thing. One day you can be PR6 and next day you are PR4. Sadly it seldom works the other way though…

blog for the sake of blogging. Blog because you love it. PR, traffic, and money will follow if you do things right.

  • You have no idea how much I’m hoping Page Rank goes the way of the dinosaurs….. People obsess over it to the point of having nothing real or helpful to say anymore. The focus is no longer on the customer, or reader.
Most of the people in my target market are even lucky if they know how to move around the internet, much less what a Page Rank is….

  • Darren, the more I read and listen to informed comment like yours, the more I am convinced that building a blog (and/or Squidoo lens) that is credible and trusted is the way to go. I am now getting daily confirmation of this. We are very much in an “engagement” era in internet marketing - people want to be connected (hence the growth of Facebook, MySpace, etc.).

  • I am new to blogging and still dont understand the whole “Pagerank” thing, is there a place I can read up on this? Like a Blogger FAQ website?

Thanks for the info, ive been reading your other pages and theyre very informative

  • Very good video! I agree 100%, what’s the point on concentrating on only SEO when content is key. Setting up a foundation to work with is much more important to start of with then concentrating on pagerank which of course is still an important factor.

    Thanks for the video!

  • We are hoping for a PR update to occur in the followoing days. I liked your video and will continue to read your blog
    for some good info. Thanks

  • I fully agree that the point of blogging is to generate good content. The secrecy and voodoo that surrounds PageRank and SEO is one aspect of blogging that I could do without. It gets frustrating to know that some blogs for whatever reason take off immediately (1000s of hits per day) and I still average only 25 per day. I just like to know ‘the rules of the game’ and be sure everyone is on an even playing field.

  • Focusing on your blog IS MUCH MORE important than trying to get your blog found. Content will bring visitors!

  • Focus on your blog! If you build it they will come.

  • I still find myself drifting back into that way of thinking so it is good to get a kick in the pants to remind me to keep my brain power heading in the right direction.

  • You are so right Darren! Building a better blog and better content will go hand in hand with your PR. We just need to focus on giving our readers more of what they want and stop trying to keep up with the cyber joneses as far as PR is concerned.

  • The cyberjoneses are not always the ones who come up with good material. Don´t try to be like them.

  • “Build a better Mousetrap and the world will make a beaten path to your door.”

Content is indeed the King. I have never heard of anyone visiting a website because it has high pagerank. People visit websites for content.

  • I am afraid that so much effort is placed on page rank that webmasters can hardly focus on anything else.

  • The funny thing about PR is that I had built my Wordpress blog over a year ago, populated it a bit, and then was side tracked. When I decided to come back and look at updating it, the blog had risen to a PR4. I though “Wow” I am going to work and this and get it higher!

So, I made a number of changes to theme, design, added pages, lots of posts but guess what?

The change was great, but apparently TOO MUCH TOO FAST for Google to like it, and I dropped to a PR2.

Alas, the Blog IS wayyyy better though :>)

  • You guys still talking about the same thing?

  • Yeah ur right, PR doesnt matter much, iv just got to keep getting the posts up there and build solid content on my blog: http://www.indimoto.com/blog/autonewsamerica.php

  • awesome! it was something i kept reminding myself.
especially being a newbie, i was not focused enough on the right set of things. “build a quality blog build a quality blog” :)

    Tks Darren!
hey if you coming to Singapore, let me know! Would love to see you personally!

  • We just need to focus on giving our readers more of what they want and stop trying to keep up with the cyber joneses as far as PR is concerned.

  • I don’t think pagerank is they key here it should only be used as a guidline

  • it is unbelievable how many people have so much ideas and things to write about PR ranking and how they feel about it. Although I see that RealRank is so much taken into consideration these days I do not understand why any of these ranks matters at all when you could actually find out how many visitors actually goes to a site and how many of them actually come back. that is the real way of actually ranking a site to find out how many people would love the site and come back again so many times that they tend to be part of it…

  • Without trying to sound like a drone - leave off the PR! Google decides to give you PR, customers give you $$$. Who would you prefer to please.

  • i wanted to ask u that if i convert my blogs from blogspot to .com or .net will it affect my ranking on google search please help me out and suggest me a name and topic for blog. Please Reply Soon

  • I am currently working on the optimization of the website of the translation agency Datawords (www.datawords.co.uk) and I can tell you that to get the best results on search engine you have to fight every day and constantly find new ideas.
With the advent of the Internet I think that that kind of communication techniques will be more and more frequently used by companies. This is just the beginning.

  • We do not need to hurry up for PR, the quality is a goal!

  • great! thanks very much for sharing!
