Nice information, this is a great way to point visitors to other places of your website. ALways look at your stats and ssee just how much error traffic you get and then point them in the right direction.

I just recently customized my 404 page... and I added in a few links, some fun, and even a sexy audio, just to keep people entertained.

It is no longer against google TOS to put adsense for search on a 404 page. I wrote up a post on how to integrate Adsense for search on a 404 page (for wordpress as well as static html websites) here:

This is something my blog has needed for a while now. I have made changes to my template and even to the file structure without fully understanding what I was in for.

Now I am trying to correct the problems I have caused. Good thing I am using my MMO blog to mess with instead of messing up my money making blogs.

By the time I am done fixing things up I should be able to write a really helpful post for my readers, sure hope they will be able to find it without a 404 error.

Hey great post Darren! I never really thought about a customized 404 Error Page, but now I can see how you can turn it into an asset for your blog!

Personally, when I run across a 404 page I just give up. But if I saw one like yours I'd at least be intrigued enough to search your website a little more.

It's the little things in blogging that can make a big difference!

I created a WordPress Plugin called AskApache Google 404 (released today) that adds some freaking awesome capabilities to your 404 Error Page. The cool thing it does besides providing users with web/site/cse/blog/image/ and video search results for their query is it keeps google searching its indexes for your site every time. I absolutely love it. AskApache Google 404

Didn't customize the 404 page that came with my theme, I love Chris Pearson's 404 page from his Copyblogger Theme on my WordPress blogs. Just tweaked the text a wee bit to suit my readers (I assume). I'm still preaching for an empty church.

Chris Pearson's text:

* Welcome to the seedy underbelly of this otherwise upstanding Web site. Please choose from the following in order to get back on track:
* Try the ol' back button on your browser, it is the most used button on the Web, you know.
* Head on back home
*Try the navigation menu at the top (arrow ponitng up) of the page.
* Search or click on a link over in the sidebar.
* Subscribe to this site's feed [link to feed] so you don't have to come here for updates.
* Visit [http://www.nlpmij.nl (my other blog)] if you want to read in depth about NLP or translate a bit.

Wel the last one I changed, something about a groin ...

Thanks for the info Darren. Did not know it was possible to customize a 404 error page.

However, just like RT, I would also like to know whether Is it against the TOS to have Adsense or Adsense Search on a 404 page?

> It parses the URL and tries to list blog posts that come close to matching the title

Is it possible to have the same feature in Drupal?
And which plugin was used for WordPress?
