How To Blog – Dumb Little Man Style

Posted By Darren Rowse 20th of August 2007 Miscellaneous Blog Tips 0 Comments

Jay from Dumb Little Man (a blog that’s seen incredible growth of late) has posted an insightful post on How He Blogs.

It has all kinds of great glimpses into his blogging and how he does it while still maintaining a full time job (warning – his schedule is a killer – 4 hours sleep!).

There’s too much stuff to summarize here – so head over and have a read.

  1. That has some really good advice. I don’t think somethings matter too much… like the last one about when you publish. My posts don’t lose value in seconds though.

  2. Wow, that blog has 65k readers. Just wow. Wonder how much it earns?

  3. The guy is Crazzzzy :)

I am not surprise his blog rank is somewhat high though and he is probably making money too.

I also have some excellent blogging tips myself : http://honestknowledge.com/warriorblog/category/blogging/

  4. I know alexa is useless but i thought it would be much higher than 22k with that many subscribers

  5. Glen, its target audience isn’t really the techie crowd. Most people who use Alexa are webmasters, etc. So I think that ranking is about right.

  6. Jeremy Steel’s comment made me wonder, how much traffic in terms of pageviews and unique visitors will make a decent earnings?

  7. Thank you for sharing this website… I think the most important thing is “Family time”. I am glad he added that.

  8. Thanks Darren

I am only about a year old to the blogging world.. and working hard to make my blog more presentable and more useful. And blog such as yours is helping me a lot in it.

I read Jay White’s post on DLM and it does have a lot of tips on better blogging…. thanks for showing us his site. I’m yet to read the links he has included in his post but surely would read soon.

  9. It was a great article for new bloggers. Simple Ideas presented in an easy to understand manner.

  10. Why does everyone always chop off the extra ‘e’ from my name? :P

Anyways, I’ve done the math and I think around 5k page views a day would be enough for a very nice extra income. I think 10k a day is the point of “I’m gonna get that new car!!” though. Look at John Chow for example, in July he says he got 319,165 page views and 167,105 unique visitors and made 12,000 bucks. That’s around 10,000 page views per day on average.

Although all that depends on your niche and such.

  11. Wow! Gonna ready it right now (though I should go to sleep :-)).

Thank you very much for sharing this kind of posts: it’s very useful to get ideas or just work on your own style when blogging :-)

Kind regards from Spain and thanks again for the link :-)

  12. I found a way to create specific category feeds and convert them all to feedburner so you can track how many people are reading what areas of your blog.

    You can read here

  13. Thanks for the link to another fine blog. I ended up following several internal links on his site and reading 6 or 8 posts.

You can add me to his list of subscribers.

  14. That was a great post, but you’re right about the 4 hours…there aren’t many of us humans built to doing that for very long! Since the family time’s gotta stay…that means I have to come up with 4 more hours somewhere else in the day. :(

  15. Being a full time parents, employee, and husband is quite time consuming and wonderful.I am also part time student. Bloggers have to try their best to share their useful and unique content with others when time permits. Sometimes life become more important than blogging.

How do we stay balanced ?

    Thanks,
    Fazil

  16. 4 hours of sleep is way better than no sleep at all (like yours truly) :O

  17. he does have a unique style of blogging… i’m going to look into his blog more and learn from him and his style… great post!

  18. I’ve been traveling for my normal job so I didn’t have a chance to stop by. Thanks for the comments here and on Dumb Little Man and I have to thank Darren for the link.

In that post I mention that Problogger has taught me a lot – I am not kidding. In one way, shape, or form, I believe that half of lot of what I posted was information I picked up from Darren over the last 18 months.

Thanks again guys. I hope the info helped a little!
