We’re Entering New Design Transition Phase

Featured Posts, ProBlogger Site News 146 comments

Just a short note to let readers know that in the next hour or so you’ll begin to see changes to ProBlogger as we launch the new design.

As with all such launches we’re sure there will be a few bumps in the road as the team behind it get things up and running - do checks - find glitches - carry out fixes etc

We ask for your patience and understanding as we do this as it will probably take us a little while to iron out any issues. If you find any issues/bugs/dead links etc please feel free to let us know in comments below. Your help in this will be greatly appreciated.

Once things are stable I’ll write a post outlining some more of the changes and thinking behind them and I’d then love to hear some discussion on what you think. Your constructive feedback will be appreciated and will help make ProBlogger a better resource for all.

Darren nervously backs away from the old orange design….

  • *crosses fingers*

  • testing

  • Looks fantastically fresh and inviting Darren. Your team that’s been working behind the scenes to put it all together has done an awesome job.

    Huge Kudos…

  • Wow! Looks great Darren, I’m off to explore.

  • thanks Stuart - still a few more little bugs to fix but we’re getting there.

  • I can’t believe I’ve been waiting impatiently for this like a first date or something. Cool! I like it,but like others, I only care about the content.:)

  • don’t break anything Glenn

  • Darren,

The new design looks great… Iam off to explore

  • Note to everyone: there are still a few CSS issues and some of the pages are not setup yet - impossible to do without pushing the site live, so I am fixing them all now and it should be done ASAP :)

  • I’ll do my best now to Darren, found an array of bugs but I won’t report any for a few hours, I’ll see if you guys sort them out first before I hit you with more. I just popped you a quick email regarding a DPS post by the way.

Once again, loving the new structure.

  • Wow, What a stunning new design, Darren!
    I love it!

You’re giving me a lot of ideas for my eventual redesign down the road, especially with regards to your new redesigned footer and your switch to a single right sidebar.

    Excellent job!!

  • Looks great, awesome !

  • For me the jobs link doesn’t work. Other than that I am liking the new design. Less cluttered, fresh and a few new ways to discover great content.

  • Darren,

Great work by you and your team. This theme is GREAT!
Are you sure there are some bugs? I can’t see them :)

I am so excited to be part of the new era for ProBlogger. I am sure we are going into a new level with the new design.

Keep up the great word Darren.

    You’re Da Man!

  • Wow…it’s VERY different. I don’t think I expected anything so drastic when I saw the title of this post in my feed reader, but I definitely like the new design. Much cleaner, and easier to navigate.

I don’t know if I like having so much of the content at the bottom of the page like that, but overall, I like this new design quite a bit.

  • Just like everyone else has said, I didn’t expect this much change. It looks fantastic though. Simplistically beautiful.

  • Woah, very different and not at all what I was expecting.. but still good! I agree with the previous poster that having so much important stuff at the bottom seems odd..

  • Very nice!
    Looks great so far!!! :-D
Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

  • Stunningly brilliant!

(I am having trouble saying anything else :)

  • fantastic. I love the new design :)

  • It will be interesting to see the number of click-throughs you get from this rss post. I’m sure everybody is clicking through to the site to check out the new design.

  • Fantastic! :)

  • Very nice. I love the new front page.

  • I fear change.

Just kidding! Looks great so far, nice clean layout.

  • thanks everyone - you’re all being very generous and supportive and are giving us energy to get all the bugs ironed out.

    We’re knocking them off slowly!

  • Darren,
    Love the new look!!!

  • That’ll do pig, that’ll do.

like it MUCH more than the orange.

  • Looks much improved, I love it! :)

  • Just a couple bugs I’ve noticed:

    - The “Advertise on ProBlogger” image link is setup wrong…it leads to a blank white page when I click on it.

    - Under “Problogging Resources” at the bottom of the page, the link labeled “My Review” under “Get a Real Blog Videos” leads to the product instead of leading to your review.

  • I love the new look. Good work.

  • Well this is interesting; heads off to explore aswell ;)

  • Nice - looks slick - I’ll be exploring more later… Congrats on the new design update!

  • It looks stunning! It’s so much nicer to read from, and the all of links are ordered so much better. It’s making me want to re-explore different parts of ProBlogger all over again. :D

The homepage is fantastic. Everything from the featured post to the ajax “best” links. I love it all. :D

  • Just noticed the completely new homepage. Some very clever ideas and great ways to organise the content with your fancy javascript / ajax section in the middle :)

  • I think I´ll need to get used, I like design but perhaps it is less personal. However, it looks great! Just two things, you should maybe choose the thumbnail of the video, you look a bit strange :) and advertising link on sidebar is not working! Anyway, congratulations!

  • wow…i like this very much! It will be much better for printing articles and its much cleaner and easy on the eyes.

I am really liking the new logo…its very visually intriguing!

thanks for all the great information you share with the blogoshere.

  • Congrats Darren, looks great!

I have been reading your blog for a few years now, and was very used to the old design.

I’m glad you kept the /blog section for easy reading, and the home area looks great also.

  • The new design is very professional Darren. I’ve also noticed some bugs and I have a few comments but I will wait until the transition is oficially completed because some of them have already been fixed.

  • The number of comments on the homepage for this post is different to that on the actual post

Plus should the problogger logo when clicked on a blog post take people to the blog or the homepage? I would expect it to take me to the blog

  • Simple and clean layout!!!

  • Wow! Way kewl! LOVE the design!

And that is my very first reaction as your blog loaded on my screen. Haven’t even had a chance to notice any quirks which you’ve probably worked out by now anyway.

  • Holy crap! It’s so sexy! I love it! Congrats to whoever it was who designed the layout.

  • Wow! Nice upgrade!

  • Wow, what can I say…I’m in awe of this new design! It looks great…Awesome job!

  • Very, very nice, Darren.

I love that the home page is being turned into a more portal/cms style and you’ve seperated the blog from the main domain - leaves you more room for future endeavours.

If this is an indication of where blog design is going then I’m liking it.

  • The link you have to advertise on ProBlogger seems to be dead.

    http://www.problogger.net/wp-content/themes/problogger2/advertise

  • Darren, the design looks ripe… very nice…

  • The new design is great. That is one massive footer. The sponsor blocks are messed up for me at the moment but I guess you guys are working on that. Looks great!

  • Much cleaner!

Personally, I think I’ll miss all that happy orange-y-ness — but this color scheme is a nice replacement. :)

  • Quick note about your new logo which I really like…

Two things registered in my mind immediately upon seeing the bluish-gray circle around the “P”…

First thought: Atoms, protons, nucleus, creating

Second thought that immediately followed first thought: Unity, linked around the world

  • Awsome new design! I have to ask though, why did you move your affiliate / ad links to the right. I read through your ‘for beginner’s’ section and it said that the ad placement hot spot is on the left sidebar. Just wondering if it really makes a difference. Once again, I really dig this new design

  • Looks good so far.

  • And you’ve changed the little feedburner button now? The static version is much nicer! :)

  • Ergh…too…clean.

I suppose it’s just a personal preference, but I quite enjoyed the orange design.

  • Your blog posts in the left column look like Google Ads. At first I thought all your content disappeared with the video thing smack in the middle.

Hopefully people will be able to distinguish between the signal and the noise on this new site. Your old design was clear and concise, I’m not sure I’d give this look the same definition.

  • Excellente! I’ve changed the template on one of my blogs as well and it’s still a work in progress. But the new layout here looks rgeat!

  • Looks awesome!

  • Ryan - Check out the “blog” link at the top. It’s laid out in traditional blog format. If you don’t like the new homepage, just use that instead. :)

Third time I’ve complemented this design; but I’ve just noticed the absolute lack of Adsense! Your RSS feed says (said*) that that was the source of 40% of your income. Will you make a post in the future letting us know how dropping Adsense here has worked out please? :)

(At any rate, it’s alot nicer not having to scroll past all that to get from a post to the comment section!)

  • Sweet, this is much easier on the eye! Not the most creative design ever, but very tidy!

  • Congrats, you managed to make your blog look like every other blog out there (TechCrunch, Read/WriteWeb, etc). I guess being original is no more in today’s world.

  • Looks great Darren! It’s definitely much cleaner, and I think you utilized the space well - particularly the footer. Great work :)

  • WOW!!! I love it!! This is one heck of a look. GREAT job to everyone who worked on this.

    Jason MoneySpace

  • Wow my head spun when the site loaded lol. Deffantly a big big change. Wow, but I do like it. Will just have to get used to reading the left column now. I deffantly like the most popular blog section down the middle.

  • Looking good thus far!

  • Darren,

    I love it. BUT…

My first impression was not as stellar as the rest. I got my first look by coming to this post from my Google Reader on a Win 2K box running IE6 at 1024×768. All I saw was the header and the post. The right sidebar got pushed to the bottom. I went to the front page and got the same result with the right sidebar on the Win 2K PC.

It looks great on my Win XP laptop using Firefox.

    Blessings!
    Hank O

  • I cant believe you’re getting rid of the “Helping bloggers earn money” phrase you used to have by your logo. That was part of your image/identity. Why letting it go?

I love the “Best of Problogger” section at the index, any chance that is available as a wordpress plugin? ;-)

  • Much better. Looks great. The old style was cluttered and the font too small. This is a big improvement.

  • Ok. The design looks truly professional! It looks excellent, it really does. I am excited to see the site go through this re-design, and I think it will only help to further boost your brand.

  • Wow Darren I really like the layout. My blogs are all about content cluttering the page but I am really excited about the centralization of the main page and the way that it gives you everything in one place.

Fantastic change although I know some people are just going to hate the change in that they will have to click to get ot any article.

You have given my inspiration to kill the upcoming weekend in a design change.

  • I love the “Best of Problogger” section at the index, any chance that is available as a wordpress plugin? ;-)

Unfortunately, no. It uses a script called DOMtabs and I edited Alex King’s plugin “Popularity Contest” to display the All time / month popular posts and the CSS is all broken up ;)

  • Hey! I like it! a lot actually! congratulation to the design team… or guy.. or whoever did it.

I also changed my site design today, so i invite you all probloggers to share your feedback there.

    Congrats again!

  • bug- when i submitted a comment for the video I was directed to a blank page that didn’t load. http://www.problogger.net/archives/2007/08/10/were-entering-new-design-transition-phase/

My apologies if this is premature but the imbalance of the 3 columns is very distracting. Why a big open space in the middle of your home page?

I really like the “best of” widget, nicely done.

  • bug- the long url in my prior post did not wrap correctly.

  • Overall - a nice clean look, but can I be rather critical of one major point?

When will blog and web designers realise that a significant proportion of the population CANNOT read white text on a black or dark background without their eyes hurting badly?

Granted - the offending text is at the bottom of the page and is just a list of links - but it is still a problem.

  • I don’t like that it’s missing Darren’s photo. That made it feel more personable.

  • BOY. That’s s stark change. But I like it. Only thing you’re missing is your mug somewhere on the front page. You gotta do it! There are a lot of posts that say one should have their pic on the front and point to your site as a prime example!

    …Oh wait…I didn’t even see the bottom there. (#):)

  • I think it looks fabulous, great work Darren!

I agree you , hope your picture will be returning to the sidebar.

  • this is BEAUTIFUL

  • After looking at your Sitemeter stats I guess the Win 2k IE6 thing is not that big of a deal after all. The site looks outstanding on Win XP and Linux using the following:

    IE 7 on Win XP
    Firefox 1.5.0.1 on Linux
    Firefox 2.0.0.6 on XP
    Opera 9.22 on Linux
    Opera 9.10 on XP
    Netscape 7.2 on XP
    Mozilla 1.7.13 on XP
Oh Yeah… Firefox 2.0.0.5 does fine on Win 2K

The Palm Blazer on my 700P doesn’t do the template justice at all. The text links and search box above the header writes over the header image. I have the same problem on a blog I am designing for a customer.

    Hank O (aka TheOzz)

  • Very nice! For some reason, I’m even liking the sponsor ads on the sidebar :D

  • well go visit them Lorna - they paid for this! ;-)

  • Sidebar crash in Internet Explorer 6

    check it out!

    http://images.myokyawhtun.com/albums/8gh2dbxy30cft1wsjkra/problogger.png

  • this looks awesome! But your picture should be up there somewhere not in the footer!!

  • Very streamlined. It was hard for me to navigate the other one. Hope all the same stuff is here. Very sophisticated logo. Good luck, problogger2.0

  • thanks for everyone’s comments on the ie6 problems - we’re aware of it and are working on it. Shouldn’t be too much longer.

  • A way bigger change than I anticipated - HUGE kudos to you and your team for such an inviting and well done front page. I also need to change my own front page soon… I may steal an idea or two from you… ;)

Congrats on your evolution - scary and fun, isn’t it?!

  • Much “more minimal.” Excellent, Darren.

  • Nice. I like it. I don’t feel like I’m in a phone booth anymore.

Agree that that is an impressive footer; and I really like your new thumbnail “about me” blurb.

  • Wow, the front page text is so small it’s almost unreadable. Looks like I’ll be focusing on your rss feed, and just clicking through to single pages as necessary. Too bad, as typing ‘problogger.net’ into my browser used to be a nice diversion.

  • Ch, Ch, Ch, Changes…… Looks great! Change is good, especially when its nicely done like your new design.

One complaint, I don’t see any content or submission form on the Group Writing Project page, http://www.problogger.net/group-writing-project

  • Fantastic Darren!

The meta has some problems in Safari, here is a screenshot

    http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h59/c_stavanger/Picture11.png

Also, the b5media Mobile RSS is oveflowing the sidebar and its probably best to stick an overflow:hidden in the main column. The url above might break your design in IE.

Finally, I think the round corners in the green subscribe and submit is unnecessary, there is nothing else round in the design so they kind of stand out.

  • fivecentnickel - patience my friend. We’ll get it right for you.

I think you saw it for a few seconds while we were playing with CSS.

As the post says above - give us an hour or three to get things right and hopefully we’ll have the bugs ironed out for you :-)

thanks for the feedback though - we’re getting there!

  • Absolutely fabulous. Hats off to the designers. Are you using any new plugins since your post about the WP plugins you use?

  • Looks great.. It took a minute to get oriented, but I think ti’s great. I see the move from blog to blogging portal has been made.

  • Looks great so far!

  • this new design is awesome. clean, uncluttered, and easy to navigate, and a non-blinding color scheme :)

  • Major props to the designer. This is so clean and easy to navigate. Also, it is very aesthetically pleasing. I just noticed though, that there is nothing under the sponsors section for me. I’m running Firefox 2.0.0.6 in Windows Vista. Other than that, totally awesome.

  • New design looks great Darren and Ben! I really like it, way to go!

  • Beautiful and very well organized with one exception - the link for comments must be at the end of the article.
Nobody is gonna like the scrolling back to the top where the link is.

  • I really think it’s an impressive design. I will miss the old.. but, hey…. Life must go on.

  • Wow, what an improvement! I like it a lot.

  • We are currently analyzing your newest effort, and will top it with Copyblogger 3.0. :)

Seriously, this design is wonderful. Kudos to Ben and to Darren for pushing blog design a step farther in the direction it needs to go.

  • Looks good, but I think I prefer the old design. We’ll see how long it takes to warm to this one.

  • Darren,
The new design looks great! I especially like the footer and all of the links that are available there. My first impression is that it is much easier to navigate through. Great job! I’m glad to see you kept the familiar picture.

  • I’m really liking this new design, except maybe all the stuff down the bottom could be up maybe under the b5 sms banner. The green is a bit yucky and doesn’t make me want to subscribe. I’d go red like problogger. I’d also include a vertical list of the last few month’s posts on the archives page, so that it doesn’t take 2 clicks to find the archive.

Just my opinion anyway, take what you will. The site looks sweet!

  • Ahhhh. Text is better now. Although there’s this giant picture of some dude’s head right in the middle of the front page. ;)

    (Only kidding… Yes, I know that’s Darren’s video)

  • Oh wow! Looks awesome!!!

  • Damn!! You sexy thing. Love the subtle colours and the new problogger logo. Very, very sexy.

  • When I’m visit this blog, I am confused. “The Orange” blog that usually I’m visited has changed. I think, I have a mistake write this blog address.
But, I’m wrong. This site has changed it’s themes. Nice themes.

  • looks really nice, much more like a blog than a website like it did before.

  • Ahhhh. Text is better now. Although there’s this giant picture of some dude’s head right in the middle of the front page. ;)

LOL - yes, the head is rather large - in real life too!

  • The new design looks great! Ben, super nice work on the site design structure! Darren, I’m honored to be part of the design team, helping out with the logo re-design. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • Wow, looking great…

  • Overall it looks great. I love the front page. Numbers on the comments might be nice.

  • Darren, your search facilities doesn’t work. Why ?

  • 115 comments… WOW.

I don’t personally like the green submit buttons. Too many colors to the theme. I does feel different.

  • Much easier to find stuff. Thanks for the update.

  • Very nice! I really like it. Congrats on the new design!

  • I don’t really like the homepage. I feel it’s a little overwhelming and the same sized headers for each panel doesn’t help me define each area quick enough. Not too mention the right side feels really heavy.

Anyway, that’s my 2-cents and I guess we’ll all have to get used to it.

Overall, I welcome the new professionally designed image for a problogger. :)

  • I like the new design - much simpler than the old one. And lots of white-space - I like white-space.

  • I’m impressed. Change is good?

    I like it.

  • Congratulation. It looks great:)
    keep it up:)

  • I must admit that I miss the old design already. As a long time ProBlogger reader, I was used to the welcoming look of the previous design, but I suppose change is a good thing.

  • Aha, its very nice!
    The head isnt bad :)

  • Much much better than the previous design which I think was the one weak point in the Problogger brand. Glad you made the move! ;)

  • Like my last post commenting on your new LOGO, I still find the new LOGO doesn’t appear to be “new” or “fresh”, but
the LAYOUT is EXCELLENT! Clinically clean, spacious to move about and so easy on the eyes. Definitely be back more often to dig some of your past content.
All the best to you Darren.

  • You’ve done a great job with the archives, which I believe is one of the handicap of the last design. It’s WAY easier to review the past posts now and I’m sure you’ll clock a higher page views ratio in time to come!

    Good work, Darren & Team!

    Cheers,
    Ellesse

  • Gorgeous design, Darren! Hats off to your team!

  • bravo, great job for this new design. Hope you will put more video on your blog

  • Great Design Darren,

Great WordPress blog template designers are hard to find so you are lucky with finding good help.

We will all be interested in reading your notes later on how you will keep up SEO with the change over to the new design.

I will be going through a similar activity (launching new blog and design) in a couple of months so tips from the master (Darren of course) will be quite useful

  • THIS IS GREAT! I kinda do not like the post on teh far left to be so small - but the layout and color is great!

  • Great redesign. Small item: On the Archives page, you recommend using the searchbox in the sidebar, but your search box is up at the top right.

  • Love the colors. And how the logo turned out. I’d increase size of blog posts font though to give it more importance to the site. As it is, everything is given equal space/size/font so it is difficult to ascertain what is what when you first land on the homepage. But you are definitely on the right track!

  • To be honest, I don’t really like this design. I’ve been reading Problogger semi-regularly for a while now, but this is my first comment. I though the orange was much more inviting and generally a lot nicer to read through. I realize this is still being tweaked, but right now it’s way too clean!

This is just my little opinion though :)

  • Love the new look. Great design! Your logo looks good too. Congrats Darren.

  • Looks great! I’m looking forward to exploring the design more.

  • i honestly think that your old design was better … sorry dude just my opinion . this one is ok but need a bit a colour change i guess . again just and opinion . PEACE

  • P.S : where’s your favicon thingy ?

  • i can see much better in previous design when compared to new one.May you should give a choice to users to choose one among old and new.
i choose the old one.it is user friendly.
should work more on colors, banners, and icons

  • I have been a reader of your blog for quite some time. I like the new look of your blog and am eager to see what other new things you will add to the look here.

  • Thanks for the warning!

  • Very nice - tres sexy, much like our good selves. :)

I’ve created a bit of fluff at Bloggerati Australia - if you ProBloggers new design, and think it’s newsworthy, feel free to vote for it there.
(Bloggerati Australia- sort of like Digg but smaller/cuter and local and drives traffic to Australian blogs and Web 2.0 sites.)

But Darlin’ you need to add the PREVIEW plugin.

  • Hi remember me. You suggested me not change my blog theme too much. I like your new theme. good one !

  • Love it! Very smart and stylish.

  • I really love the new layout, it’s much cleaner than the old one ^^

    Regards,
    Christian

  • This layout looks great! I love it!
