New AdSense Units Spotted

Today I’ve had a few emails from people spotting new types of AdSense ads with links not only in the ad but under the ad also.

Here’s one from Paul:

Having chatted to a few people who’ve spotted them on their blogs they seem to be normal ad units combined with ad link units.

Some readers have also reported seeing ad units with ‘show more’ underneath the ads instead of the topics as you see above.

Im surprised Jensense didnt know about this

Nice one for sharing the news, wonder how regular users react in terms of CTR

  2. Thanks for sharing this. It will be interesting to see if this will spread or not.

  3. Perhaps an effort to overcome AdSense ad-blindness?

  4. Live TV says:

comment hiccuped on me. Anyways, the new ads seem to have keyword tags at the bottom, which clicking on them perhaps open a google search for that keyword.

  5. Andrew says:

Interesting. I’ve been looking at putting adsense on my blog but I’ve got a question:
For someone new to blogging, having not many readers yet, but looking to monetize their blog, which ad provider would you recommend? Is adsense the best ‘begginers’ ads?

  6. lifelessons says:

After reading this post, I rushed to one of my blog to see if it was showing on my blog, but I didn’t notice anything like that. ;)

    Thanks for sharing Darren. :)

  7. Interesting blending of different ad units into one.

Lets see if this makes it into mainstream.

  8. KCLau says:

    Andrew,
I would say that Adsense is the easiest to use in terms of setting it up and providing ad income to the blogger.

  9. shamess says:

Eek. This looks awful. Google seem to be squashing in as many links as they can into the ad box. I don’t like it at all.

  10. Ted says:

I’ve got a link unit on one of my sites showing “view ads about” then a search box. I haven’t seen it before and not really happy about it as the search box is cut off by the pages design, don’t see it working for me.

  11. elvirs says:

yes i had this ads two days ago, when you click on the links at the bottom new ads load in the same block, interesting experiment but i think people will likely click on the main ads and only 1 from 100 will think of sorting ads according to suggestions at bottom of the ad block.

  12. siong1987 says:

Instead of Google text link ads with keywords, I even find that Google Adsense even put normal ads in its text links ads.

This is the one I found in my blog – http://www.earningblog.com/2007/07/16/google-testing-different-text-link-ads/ .

  13. Holly Simon says:

Ted: I saw that once on a website I was doing some spring cleaning for – I too was confused, and it is squshed as well, therefore dosen’t look too appealing to the design of the site – it was the typical code however, but nothing I could do would change it.

    Has anyone else seen this?

  14. Hey Darren, and the rest of the problogger community, I commented on this story via video: http://www.viddler.com/explore/ajvaynerchuk/videos/1/

  15. Starfeeder says:

Interesting, I hope they provide many more options in the future in terms of sizes and customization. Its definitely the easiest to setup.

  16. Egonitron says:

Yeah I posted about this yesterday:

    http://egonitron.com/2007/08/04/google-testing-new-ad-combo-format/

Ted: Google does that on link unit when they can’t find any links to display. That way you’re not wasting space, and there’s still a (small) change someone will search for something from it. I’m not a fan of it either.

  17. Google is trying to get the most they can out of the little space they have to work with- can’t blame them.

  18. Fable says:

Haven’t seen them myself, yet, but I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled. They look better than the older ones, too in my opinion. :)

  19. BeachBum says:

I saw an ad like that this weekend. At first I thought the publisher figured out how to mesh the 2 ad formats.

Anything that improves conversion sounds good to me.

    here-here!

  21. Debo Hobo says:

Great post. looks like to me the new format will increase the click through rate immensely.

  22. This is interesting. When I first read the post I thought this was something that some Publishers are doing intentionally by messing with the adsense code, but after reading the comments it looks like this is a new type of ad unit that adsense is putting out. I checked my websites, but didn’t see these units, but I’ll definitely be looking to see if they show up, and if there is any change in the CTR.

If you have these kind of ad units, are they showing up only on link units or any kind of units? I’m curious.

  23. Yes, they’ve been appearing on my blog as well. Here are the screenshots: http://www.aaroncook.com/2007/08/new-adsense-ad-units-spotted.html

I’m also noticing that when you hover over the links you see something similar to this:

    javascript:gurl(‘ChBGtsWPAAvTQo4U1MgRmVlZBvxCfEgtDigBSLTkrw4′)

I wonder how this will effect CTR. And are these paid clicks as well?

    Shine on,
    Aaron

  24. Yup… I’ve already see that too in one of my site.

Maybe Google Adsense team want members to earn more that what normally they earn. Hope that it will bring much CTR to everybody.

  25. ApOgEE says:

I can’t see them on both links you give… Is it different on each region?

  26. jhay says:

Haven’t actually seen one live but this looks interesting.

Perhaps another of Team AdSense’ experiments.

  27. Thanks for sharing this

  28. Steve says:

I’ve not come across any of those yet, but I love the idea of combining ad units with link units.

  29. Useful information. This new ads made me confused when it appeared at the first time on my site.
