Links that Don’t mention the iPhone – Speedlinking 2 July 2007

Posted By Darren Rowse 2nd of July 2007 Pro Blogging News 0 Comments

I’ve come very close to simply marking every unread in my RSS readers as ‘read’ today because something close to 50% of posts that I’m reading are about one thing – the iPhone.

While I’m a big fan of Apple and think this looks like a great product – I’m over it. Maybe it is because we can’t get or use them here in Australia for six months – or maybe because I just think that the blogosphere has become a little obsessed by the whole thing – but declaring this to be an iPhone free zone from here on (well for a while anyway).

I didn’t mark all my RSS feeds as ‘read’ – and while I’ve waded through hundreds of posts about that product which will now remain nameless I did find a few others well worth reading. Here they are:

Des is writing a series on his 5 Favorite News Readers and has written about Newsgator Online, BlogBridge, Bloglines so far.

  1. I was over at engadget.com yesterday and it had 3 pages of stories on iphone. Surely enough is enough!

  2. You know, i have heard a lot of complaints from people that have bought them about them not working properly or not being able to get the services on them hooked up correctly so consider this a blessing. After all, maybe they will have all of the kinks worked out of them by the time they reach Australia.

I for one never buy any radically new technology until its been on the market for at least a year. The reason for this is during that year the makers have a chance to get all of the bugs worked out and a year from now there going to be a heck of a lot cheaper. maybe even two years is there really expensive.

Its just like when those Mp3 player things came out. They were ridiculously priced and now you can get them really cheap.

  3. Here today, something else tomorrow.

I guess I am too cheap to pay a premium price for something I don’t need. The iPhone doesn’t line up with my goals in life.

    Michael

  4. I saw news about the iPhone on all my local channels.
It’s very weird because we barely know stuff about Apple. Guess that’s the biggest news of 2007 ?

  5. For not wanting to talk about the iPhone, not only did you find a way to mention it a couple times, but you also made it part of your title. Congrats!

  6. Thanks very much for the mention, Darren. It’s much appreciated.

I was quickly over the iPhone after its launch and the raft of blog articles back then, although I have seen some humorous videos of late comparing it to Nokia’s N95 (with the Nokia coming out on top).

  7. Love the vid!!!!!!

  8. I liked the conferences article. The “10 Mistakes” one was ruined by poor grammar. In fact, it inspired me to write a whole article on grammar.

Also, a few other posts have really influenced me to write. All of this stuff seems to get very repetitive to me. The more research I do, the more I figure out that everyone is starting to say the same thing, but in a different variation – like the “10 Mistakes” article. I think everyone has posted that one in some shape or form… I might have even posted something like that. Either way, this has basically changed my outlook on blogging. My resolution is to never restate all of the redundancies in web development (not that I did before).

  9. The iPhone is great for young persons. The reason why so many people are obsessed with is because it the iPhone has had a very powerful marketing campaign since it’s announcement. Everybody talked about the revolution called iPhone. It can be compared like a brainwashing of some sort.
I wish I could market my blog that well…

    Loved the video!

  10. Well, the iPhone’s been a long in coming – it deserves its day or more in the blogosphere … but I’m a little biased :) … I predicted it back in 1979

  11. Isn’t Speedlinking the same as a Blog Carnival?

  12. I never expected Problogger.net to mention the iPhone :)

I have a vested interest as I write for a blog that is about nothing but the iPhone!

  13. Don’t you think that bloggers should be less mindless and post on more meaningful things such as charity? America is in the toilet and you aren’t do your fair share to make it better. You are a journalist but not an activist. I would hate to be you.

Consider making a difference and make your next blog entry on something worth caring about. How about suggesting to your readers your favorite charity. Maybe some of them will even contribute…

  14. The iPhone has to be one of the best marketing campaigns ever, what Apple have done is create an incredible following for a product before it was launched.

iPhone Mania, didn’t do my Technology site any harm either, as someone decided, to post an article I had written about the iPhone on a very popular Apple forum.

My article then made frontpage news of that site, and brought me a load of traffic on the weekend and a lot of new readers, and RSS subscribers to my blog.

It is amazing what one article can do.

  15. iwhat?

Sorry, I’m not that out of touch.

I’m just not that impressed – especially about people waiting in line just so they can be among the first ones to have it. More likely to be among the first ones to put it up for sale on ebay.

    Liked the video clip.

  16. Being a current employee for AT&T, i can say I am just glad that the iPhone day is over. However, usually the cool phones are found in Asia and Europe while the US is left drooling and waiting months for those phones. So it’s nice to finally have a phone that everyone else drools about for once … :-)

  17. I will admit to being an iPhone fan i love hearing interesting stories not the same old crap we seem to get about it being multi-touch and that its an iPod. We all get it!

Which is why on my technology blog TechJuicer i have made a separate iPhoneJuicer blog just for iPhone stuff that i find interesting this then if people want to hear about the iPhone they can go to that blog.

  18. I’m so sick of hearing about the iPhone. It doesn’t seem like a great product at all. It’s just backed by Apple hype.

Anything can be a great product if you don’t give away any details. Just look at how popular the movie Snakes on a Plane became ;)

  19. I suppose it’s ironic that I read this post on an iPhone… :)

  20. Yeah, digg was taken overy by iphone articles too…. *=)

  22. I agree with you 100%, I still do not understand what the big deal is about it, but then again, I have gotten over my gadget-fixation in recent years.

  23. Same for me. I too had to click Mark all read in Google Reader after browsing through the feeds of couple of blogs. Its iPhone everywhere and it sucks big time…

  24. Whoa.. good tips and good link…

  25. First thanks for the great links as always, secondly thanks for avoiding the IPhone! It doesn’t deserve the hype built up around it.

The video included was fun to watch as well, an all round informative post as usual.

  26. Loved that video.

Lately, I’ve been receiving invites on myspace to be added to my page. Now I know why. :)

Thanks for the links. I will check out the speedlinking one. I have a book contest coming up and I think I may use that.

If anyone have any fresh ideas about hosting giveaways at their blog, hit me up. Come to think of it today’s post maybe a question post so that I can work on A/R stuff.

  27. It is nice to know that not everyone online has gone crazy over one little gadget. Thanks for the great links. They are certainly better than yet another picture or tidbit about that which shall not be named.

  28. I’m getting sick of hearing all about the iPhone too. The only way it can live up to all the hype is if it comes with a cure for cancer.

  29. It’s got the apple brand, so it’s bound to sell. But way over hyped again with the must haves and paying 3X just to be first to have one. Already the ebay craze is starting to happen, with huge mark up. It’s like the PS3 though, in a few months they’ll have overstock and have to come down on the price.

frankly I wish something of some “significant” value would make headline news instead of what America is flocking to spend their money on.
