Please, please, please don’t get the impression that San Francisco, New York, and Washington give one a realistic impression of the US. Your comment that SF was the most relaxed place you saw in the US is just evidence that you flew across the US (not an unreasonable thing to do if your goal isn’t to see the country itself), and missed the 3000 miles in between SF and DC, where practically everything is more relaxed that either of those places (relaxed to the point of semi-consciousness in some places). The coasts are like media images of the States–totally unlike the way most people in the country actually live.
