I've just started a blog contest, I have a decent readership(for the amount of time I've been blogging) I'm ranked @ 500,000 on alexa, and 140,000 on Technorati -- after only 45 days. I've earned about $35 in that 1 month time frame.

I feel my blog is ready to really explode, but so far not one person has signed up for my contest - is there anything about my contest that might be lacking in motivation? - Link to the contest is in my comment link. Thanks, I'd appreciate any feedback on my contest.

Hi, thanks for the great info. I am preparing a contest and I found your post.
I think after the preparation, the Marketing part is the most critical. It will detemine the number of contestants.
I will give a credit on my contest post, appreciate it.

Are you sure there are no more specific legal issues with running a contest? In some countries, prize draws are considered a type of gambling, and come under gaming laws, and are subject to all kinds of restrictions and rules about how they may be run, how the winners drawn, how the winners informed etc. etc. etc.

Probably no-one is going to give you hassle about a little prize draw on your blog, but you should probably follow up the tip about consulting a lawyer!

Also, you could imagine your blog losing huge amounts of credibility if something got messed up (I once did a prize draw and by mistake had two tickets with the same number - guess which number got drawn!), or the draw seemed less than transparent. Still, a great idea.

Could anybody tell me which software or web app. Darren use to create the above picture board (or whatever it is called)?

It's very neat and keeps a lot of pictures in one place.

Thank you.

Thanks for the helpful post Mark, got some good ideas from it. We've run a few contests in the past with varying degrees of success. I've always found that marketing the contest and getting the word out was extremely difficult and has made me reluctant to run them again.

Anyone have any additional tips for getting the word out on contests to actually leverage your efforts effectively?

Thanks!
David

Mark, This is an incredibly detailed and timely post.

Undoubtedly, this is the longest blogpost I have ever read...but, I read every single word.

Thanks Darren for featuring Mark!

Mark, I did noticed that you're running another iPod contest right now, and your instructions and disclaimers were very concise, clear and easy-to-read. Can I "paraphase" your rules when I run my own contest?

I already read a couple posts before I found your contest...so, I'll be entering/reviewing your site soon ;-)

Excellent article. I've just started a two-tiered SUBSCRIBER & BLOG CONTEST at http://southsidestar.blogspot.com

Since my blog -- my "cyberlounge" -- eminates from Chicago, all of the (Amazon) contest prizes are related to Chicago.

But reading this post reminds me of so much work I have yet to put into this effort... Back to work for now! :-)

KidBlogger: I'm not sure what you mean by SU.

Brad: People cheating isn't usually too big of an issue. I supposed it might be if you were giving away a huge prize.

As far as I know the CTR doesn't impact smart pricing. The conversion rate (what people do once they click on an ad) does.
