I agree that it will be just as easy (or easier) to sell using a link from your post’s text and talking it up. However, I like the idea that your site remains in the background. Amazon’s policy from what I understood, is that you cannot redirect the user to their site by specifying the target to be in a new window. So, keeping your site in the mind of the user may help sell something else when they’re not interested in the first item.

Brings up the question…why not use both methods?

Yeah I agree. If you already have an affiliate account on amazon, etc… wouldnt it be easier to link directly to Amazon instead of wasting the HTML code on BooBox? That is like saying we built a widget that pulls up a box on screen that allows cutomers to email you directly from their Yahoo accounts…instead of just posting your email address?

I checked out the demo, seemed to be cool but as dave said, not too descriptive…
nice concept though..too bad I was to late and didnt get on the beta team.

I will add though, Marco from booBox had contacted me and said they’ve already had solutions in had to deal with the Amazon Greybox. So that free version may not be much competition after all.

Hey Darren, an interesting thing happened after Mike wrote up a review of booBox on techcrunch After reading the review on TC, one of his readers built a widget that does essentially the same thing in 20 Minutes! Worse for booBox he’s offering his widget for free. I wrote about it on my blog if you want to check it out. It’s called Developmentnow’s Amazon Greybox.

It’s a cool effect (although the design of the lightbox could be jazzed up a little), and would probably work well on product-oriented web sites.

I agree, though, that the pictures are not always very descriptive of the products themselves. Perhaps it would be better if they included the product name and price below each picture?

Also, an Amazon (or whichever other store you use) logo would help the visitor understand what’s going on. It would also give you more credibility and make it look less like pop-up spam.

In theory this sounds like a great idea for anyone who blogs about a niche product, such as mp3 players, digital cameras, electronic games etc and can link in their content directly. On the other hand, with a little effort, you can do the same directly into amazon or similar.

Not sure if this service is going to offer anything above and beyond what can already be done, unless it really is going to be a simple ‘one liner’ as far as changes to your site are concerned (I doubt it).
