How do you write an About Me page?

There are four main questions that readers want answered on your About Me page:

  1. who you are…
  2. your expertise and how it addresses…
  3. their problem or goal, and how they can…
  4. contact you

Here is a sample “About Me” page that answers these questions:

Hi, I’m Jane Smith and I write TransitionMomBlog (who Jane is) to help women make the transition from full-time mom to successful entrepreneur (the reader’s problem or goal). I started TransitionMomBlog in 2004 (Jane’s expertise – shows she has been blogging for two years) to help other women deal with the sometimes overwhelming prospect of starting a new business while still running a household (how Jane helps them overcome their problem or achieve their goal). Prior to raising my family, I spent over ten years as a teacher, corporate trainer and workshop leader (Jane’s expertise, both as a mom and a business person). To contact me, please email XXX (how to contact Jane).

  • This is a great post, thank you for the short and sweet information. It has helped alot within only one month, however, with low page rank, my blog doesn’t get much traffic from google, but msn seems to throw some traffic my way so you have helped in some way.

    Thank you

  • Thanks, this is so useful! The ‘About Me’ is something so small and simple, but writing a good one isn’t so simple at all. Especially in my field, the ‘About Me’ is the business card that draws my clients in. It’s essential!

  • I get some visits to my “About Me” page, and I almost always, visit the about me page, of blogs I view.

If the about me page gives a good description of the author, and they show themselves as being credible, I am more apt to rely on the information they post, hence, visit them more often, and possibly link to their site.

Being a female, nontraditional age, low tech blogger, I have used my about me page to explain to my readers, “where I came from, and why I blog. Having said that, my about me page has ended up pretty lengthy.

  • I have friends that always ask me about writing the “About me” page. Before your post, I would always tell that to write what they “feel” about their current moods of creating their blog sites. But now, you have created a template for most people to follow as a guideline.
    Thank you!

  • Nice checklist to use, depending on what you want to convey or portray, I guess it’s also a matter of balancing how personal you want to get and how much credibility you wish to project.

  • thanx Darren
    we’re living in Problogger.net now
and leaving our sites and blogs
    lol:)

  • The about me page for any program - blog, website, social community - has also stumped me. But thanks for some really simple, basic directions (and the example is appreciated) to follow to take the work out of this and make it fun :)

  • You make it sound too formal IMO, I think we should not look at it that formal. However, i can not argue that the mentioned points are relevant.

  • Thanks for the tips. I think I will add a little more about my expertise on my about page.

  • I just used this tip to write my about page. It’s great. Thanks again for the wonderful info.

  • Hey,

My roommate and I recently started a website for helping with technology. I stumbled across this site and absolutely love it.

Thanks for the great post and keep it up!

  • As always thanks for the Darren!

  • You’d think writing ‘About Me’ would be easy, wouldn’t you? At least until you’re faced with that blank page. My blog is only an infant yet and there’s a lot to learn before it grows. After reading this, I’m going to have to re-think the ‘About Me’ page.

  • I’ve always kinda left the “about me” Page alone. Cause I never really knew what to put in there. Now that I know… I’m gonna work on it and sort it out. :)

    Thanx Darren.

  • Good Stuff Pro Blogger, looks like our ambitions are the same for our blogs

  • Perfect… this helped a bunch!

  • More information is good, but be concise!! Nobody wants to read a 10 pages “about page”…

    (starting to blog seriously)…

  • Thanks for the tips.

That was simple and very basic but we oftentimes overlook.

    Nice post!

  • Thanks for sharing these guidelines Darren, new to blogging, all suggestions from experienced bloggers are very much appreciated!

  • So simple yet I have never given the About Me thought. Will edit all I have now,— Bingo

  • Let’s face it, it’s tough to talk about ourselves. Thanks for the tips.

  • Thanks for the tips.

  • If you don’t write a good about me page, what can you expect from your blog content ?

  • My ‘about me’ page is different than the usual templated style that one would find on a blog or website. I did this because it’s a personal site so I figured I could just have fun and get away with it not looking professional.

I’ve actually gotten a few emails about my ‘about me’ page asking me questions or telling me their thoughts on it. Go figure.

  • About Me page is an important factor for a successful blog. People should know who is the owner of the blog.
I read tips but I couldn’t find my visitor’s problem or goal. I will think on that and I will rearrange my About Me page later.

  • I think I have to change my “about me” page, since it’s seem not well writen :P

  • Very useful thanks for posting it!

  • I really think this will help me adjust my about me page.

  • I just start make contact us, and About me Page last week

  • Thanks for writing such article. Now i can start with my “about me” page.

  • Here’s a great post on the very same topic at skelliewag.org. What many of us use as a simple “this is who I am page,” she turns into a useful, yet subtle sales page.

    The post is at: http://www.skelliewag.org/how-to-write-the-perfect-about-page-by-numbers-150.htm

  • “To contact me, please email XXX (how to contact Jane).”
Why e-mail porn to contact Jane? (j/k, j/k)

Seriously, thanks for this great article, I only have one question…woldn’t the expertise have to refer to the specific field the blog is about? For example, as a blog reader, if I follow a marketing blog I want to see the author’s offline expertise before I trust his advice.

  • Darren is right. A simple, personable “about me” can do wonders for your business and is one of the simplest and most often overlooked tools of the trade.

  • The “about me” section is basically your pitch book and often your only way to let the world know about who you truly are, what aspirations you have, your motto in essence.

  • A simple but very informative tip with a detailed example…thanks!

U r right. I should take the time to write more.

  • I like this; short and sweet. I was writing an autobiography and wondered why no one was interested - except for my mother, of course. Now I answer the four questions you recommend and get on with the business of blogging!

  • People respond well to figures, facts and statistics. Try to get great information and as many facts as you can. A good and well written article (like in http://whatsonweb.blogspot.com) will boost your reputation as an expert in your chosen field or topic. As more people believe in you. They will be able to trust you and your products.

  • im really impressed of this page s hats off

  • I absolutely hate writing about pages. I have an about page that links off to information pages about me (like a podcasting page, a subscribe page, a hire page, etc), but on that about page, I basically say “I suck at about pages, but here are some resources you can look over.” Now, I’ll get to work on a real about page. Thanks for the great tips! :)

  • thanks for “About Me”

    thanks!

  • Great tips, but also be yourself and a bit original.

  • Thank you for this post!

  • Ever since I had been online,I never thought it necesary to write an about me in a blog. But,today,I have just added one to my knowledge.

  • I like to put a picture in my About Me page. I like to let readers know a little more about me without having to read through the articles first. What do you think about pictures on your About Me page?

  • Is Jane a real person? I want to contact her!

  • My opinion that there should be a different between a profile page on a website and the about me page on a blog.

Blogs are more personal the about me page should include some personal information in order to interact better with you vistors, if you visitor know some personal details about you, that can cause them to visit you your because they fell the “know you better”.

As for a profile page it’s should be more tech facts and should include experties and backround information. After profile pages will appear more on website and sell or deliver services and this information will have some weight if to choose you services or not.

And as always this not black or white and every case should be considerd differently.

  • i would like to use this page on my profile page to where people could read more about me if they wish to.

  • I think this website is cool and I would like to use this as a page on my myspace page.

  • Hey..thanks.That one was helpful.I was just thinking to add a about me column in my blog http://weblogzz.blogspot.com and was searching for examples. Now i don’t need anymore .

  • Very interesting stuff. Don’t know if I agree about the distinction between “about us” and “profile” though.

  • A very nice inspiring topic Mr.Darren.. My blog ” lokapriya.com ” and its About Me page totally inspired by this topic..

  • I agree with the first commentor. Your about page is probably the best example.

  • An about me page is not at all a necessity. Having no about me page is a great idea for those not wanting to give out personal information, and those making faulty about me pages because they don’t want to give out personal information. From your content alone many, attributes can be derived.

  • Hye.Cool tips. i just changed my about me based on this this. have a look at my site and give a comment if can.

  • My opinion that there should be a different between a profile page on a website and the about me page on a blog.

  • Good advice, but maybe just a little safe? A little boring? I reckon the number rule of marketing is to be noticed and be remembered - to make a connection with your reader. Over the years, I’ve received a lot of comments from readers about by About Us page, which has a photo of me holding a python and photos of water views my wife, Joanna, and I are collecting.

  • Great advice for a beginning blogger. Thanks!

  • As a beginner I really appreciate this. It adds more focus to the page and everything. I have been on here for a few days and this the only place I can get solid advice like that. Keep it up. You are our inspiration.

How long ideally to write about me page?

I have written about me page. But I think it’s too short.

  • Well, I thing Longer Doesn’t mean it is better, I mean, We have to compress the About Me page. Short and Simple. Right?

And, Picture of the blog author is also very important.

    For me. Any additional Suggestions?

Thanks Darren, Problogger.net now are our reference.

Actually when I was making my website and blog, I was really confused what to write in the page titled about me. I wrote more than ten pages but never felt satisfied. Even now I don’t have an about me page on my website.

But I like the straight forward approach that you proposed and trying to write a new one on my website.

    Thank you for your post.

  • Hi!

My blog is now up and running, well, my first post is my feeling of how to write blog and start-up on it.

Thanks for the opportunity to post.

  • Nice tips.. I actually went on with testimonials for mine instead of writing about me others who know me did .. but yes will add a few things about what I did and am doing too :) thx

  • Never thought “about me” page could be so important…Thanks Darren!

  • I took your advice and wrote a small about me page on my Australian Financial Blog - here is the page:

    http://www.savingsguide.com.au/about/

Keep up the good work Daz!

  • I thought this was very helpful for someone that has figured out a purpose for their blog. I have yet to find that for my blog so it would be interesting how you would go about writing an About Me page for some like me who is still trying to figure out his niche.

    Rak

  • The purpose of my blog is just my rants and opinions. So the blog is obviously narcissistic enough and the whole About Me was another soapbox for me to do back flips on. I zapped the initial thousand words down to about ten and it comes off slightly less self-important.

  • […] to know who is behind a blog, what their goals for it are, how it started and other information about what the blogger is on […]

  • Thanks for this article. I got to admit that writing an about page is a little harder than it seems. Content wise, you’re not writing all too much, most likely a bit shorter than an average blog post. But you’re thinking “well should I say this or that, and should I word it like this or that.”

To those that are still developing their about pages, I think time will take its course. I hadn’t touch mine since launching the site, but after reading this post - and having time pass by, I know what I wanted my readers to see.

IMHO, the third party can be a little strange, but do whats comfortable and suits your style.

For those that are curious, here is mine that I just modified after reading this helpful post.

    http://www.heindrickso.com/about/

  • hey darren, any more samples of how to make an about page better? the one you have above is pretty general I think. Thanks!

  • Even though this wasn’t a big checklist, my “about me” page probably doesn’t cover #3 quite as well as it should. I need to spend more time on how I can adress the problems & goals of others. Thanks!

  • Never bother of doing anything to my “about me” section until now. Thank you so much for this info!

  • Man, I have seen some really bad “About me” pages out there. Where they tell you absolutely nothing except a whole lot of their philosophy or something that’s not even interesting. Some people are just plain boring, and others are over-funny to the point that it actually makes no sense why you’re there (and, you move on). The latter are not funny as much as they’re just random. Random blogging is for random readers – people who won’t really come back to read anything. Those that do are like such a small demographic.
