Blogs, forums and .edu and .gov Links
This reader Quick Tip was submitted by Moshe Morris from SEM Basics.
Oftentimes links from sites with the .edu and .gov extention can be particularly helpful when trying to rank well in the search engines. Here, then, is a quick and easy way to find some (potentially) high quality .edu and .gov links. Go to google and search do one of the following searches:
“keyword” forum site:.edu
“keyword” blog site:.edu
“keyword” forum site:.gov
“keyword” blog site:.gov
For instance, if you wanted to find blogs and/or forums which relate to art simply substitute the word art for “keyword”. These searches will turn up a list of blogs and forums which are relate to keyword. All you have to do is get involved with these blogs and forums and you can start to find some quality backlinks pointing at your site. What’s more, these links may send people to your site directly in and of themselves. It’s a win-win situation.

Not sure how much benefit this is in reality most blogging software uses no-follow in comment links, so as a page rank increase barring getting onto a post itself, I can’t see the benefit of targeting specific gov, edu domains. Of course commenting on other blogs is vital for increasing traffic at least initially out of curiosity I know that .gov and .edu link backs produce higher PR does this include .ac domains? in particular UK universities uses .ac.uk rather then .edu.uk but it seems reasonable to assume they hold the same weight in search rankings?

Nice tip, though I think it would be quite a feat to get link loves from .edu or .gov sites. You must be quite a blogger or simply very lucky. Still, it’s an attractive idea.

Thaks for the tip. Getting a link from Edu domain can be quite useful. However, it is not easy to get a link from them.

I experimented a bit and did a lot of digging and the answer to my original question is yes ac.uk domains do produce higher PR but not as much as a .edu! similar .gov.uk have the same effect.

Thanks, I have at last found an excellent way of gaining .edu and .gov backlinks. Thanks – hopefully I will see them being spidered soon!

This way is so difficult and results in no realistic effect on your pagerank since the links are usually no follow. There are very few ways to get real .edu and .gov links without some effort. I have access to many top edu forums and .gov forums but sometimes I spend an hour to write a constructive post to get the link. The links are permanant and are powerful.
Some of you may already know that http://www.adison.edu allows links, rents blogs and has a forum. Some of the site is on a donation basis to get links but the links are clean and powerful.

Wow!! This is great. But this is not in the top position at google for the related longtail keyword “free. gov links+blog” Why??
