Usually when they want writing samples, in an online application, then you’d put a link to your portfolio of writing samples that you have online… it’s not “lazy” – it’s just how it’s done, especially if they don’t provide a large text box area to paste a sample in.

Following instructions means not stressing out when they’re not what you expect them to be, and being able to go with the flow. :)

Darren,

I have been trying to apply for a blogging job, but there is no place for me to put my writing sample.

This has occurred more than once, and its very frustrating.

I have no problem following instructions, but if there is no space to type or paste the writing sample…what am I to do?

I have a blog, but I can’t place it anywhere on the application except in the URL line, and I feel that’s the lazy way to put in your sample.

Any suggestions?

Perhaps you could also start a topic aimed at small companies looking to hire employees. Simple replies acknowledging receipt of application might be one suggestion for one of the employers listed on your board. It only takes a minute to set up a boilerplate response.

Another thing that people have to put in their mind is that, don’t be too concise however as you do need to include everything that they ask for and sell yourself. You must demonstrate your knowledge of blogging and knowledge of topic at your best.
