The following is an answer from Hugh Hewitt responding to my one question interview question of what he’d do differently if he had to start his blog over again. Note – this is the last interview in this series.

So many things, so little time.

Here’s the Baker’s dozen short list:

  1. Find a blog program with spellcheck.
  2. Find a designer that would have allowed me to avoid the intervention at Lileks’ Jasperwood. Amazingly, the design matters.
  3. Start sooner.
  4. Post more frequently.
  5. Praise/critique ratio at 7:1.
  6. Turn my tech stuff over to Joshua Sharf in ’00 rather than ’05. ([email protected]).
  7. Align with Townhall.com sooner.
  8. Bring on co-blogger Mary Katharine Ham earlier.
  9. Proscribe FratersLibertas.com earlier.
  10. Ask Duane to start Radioblogger.com in ’00 rather than ’04.
  11. Dine out with Roger L Simon more often.
  12. Persuade Peter Robinson to post with me and not “The Corner.”
  13. Suggest to the Powerline gents that perhaps they’d like to post at www.HughHewitt.com.

But I can’t really complain about anything. “Baseball [blogging] has been very, very good to me.”

  1. What does “Praise/critique ratio at 7:1” (#5) mean?

  2. I think praise/critique ratio means that he want to praise someone 7 times more than he critizise someone. It is better karma, no one likes to read a blog of a guy that always whine.

My question: This guy who do the tech stuff at #6, is he still doing it? Is he expensive? What is the tech stuff about?

  3. “Post more frequently”

Out of all twelve items, I think this is by far the most important for any blogger (whether starting out or trying to improve).

  4. I’m sad to see the end of this series. It has been fascinating to read and very enlightening. Hope to see something similar soon.

  5. Skip blogger.com and started with WordPress. I feel I wasted 6 months with my blogspot.com project.

Blogger just no give you enough control.
