“Where do I find Free Blogger Templates?”
I’m regularly asked by bloggers using different blog platforms where they can get nice designs for their blogs, usually for free. I’m a WordPress User and therefore know a few good spots for WP templates (here, here, here, here, here, here and here for starters) but one of the platforms I’m less familiar with that many blogs use is Blogger.com.
Gecko and Fly have a nice list of well designed Blogger Templates that I think I’ll be sending people to from now on. Most are designs imported in from WP designs that are quite unlike Blogger.com default designs.

I recently redisgned my blog using PsycHo: Free Template Generator and I have to say I was very happy with the ease of use, customization capability of the generator. It even lets you save your work and retrieves it when you come back to the site (using cookies I believe). I used to have one of the generic Blogger template but had gotten tired of the look, and wanted a 3 column blog. PscHo worked like magic and I recommend it to anyone!

Gecko and Fly is such a great find for blogger.com! I have searched for hours to find good blogger templates and never found Gecko and Fly. Thanks for posting that link.

I’m not terribly impressed. The vast majority of the designs have been lifted directly from The Style Contest http://www.thestylecontest.com with absolutely no creditation to the designers who originally designed them – and whom I believe hold the copyrights to these designs.

Not really sure how Kosher it is to claim originality when it’s not yours. Fly’s taking credit for Forest Green when it’s clearly Dave Shea’s work on a standard Movable Type template: http://www.sixapart.com/movabletype/styles/library

I recently changed my blog layout with free blogger.com templates from some random website and it ended up fitting perfecty. I may within a few months switch to my own domain though depending on traffic, etc.

Hi,
Like some of the commentors here, I also had a difficult job of finding a suitable template for my Blogger blog. I specifically wanted a 3-column layout of certain proportions. I downloaded a few but found that the headache of customizing them made me seriously consider creating my own from scratch (which I eventually did).
I had a play with the PsycHo tool mentioned above and I agree it is very very cool. But an automated template generator has a natural limit to the ‘degrees of freedom’ within which you can vary your design.
Some absolutely amazing templates designs are out there if you have the time to find them. Creative artwork, interesting color schemes and even animated templates! I decided to collect a few together .. then some more… then some more… and now the collection is at

(note this a ’standard’ Blogger site hosted on Blogspot.. the template for it is my own… but it shows what can be done – check out the categories system.)
Designers rights are a BIG issue because templates are so easy to cut-and-paste. Having spent so long doing my own template, I realize how important it is that credit is properly given where it’s due. On Blogger Templates Directory ALL designer rights are respected and each designer has a profile page.
Contributors range from professionals to schoolkids (and I don’t need to tell you which are the most eye-grabbingly imaginative!).

I got this error when I copied the html of the gecko’s temple and paste into my blogger template.

You will not get the help you need here. Begin by asking the author of the template and/or at the source of where you got it.
Blogger should have some form of support forum, too. So you can ask there, but the rule is usually to ask the author, source, and last on the forum.

the main problem is after applying these good looking templates your sites serps look weird and that way can harm you if you are a professional blogger so do chk it.

I’ve made a few free blogger templates (new version). All are 3-column templates, designed to be easily customized (colors and fonts) just from the layout page, and to fit nicely Adsense banners and any other ad banners. I just figured out how to make horizontal linkbars in the header and will include these linkbars in all newer templates. The list of templates is still growing…check at dzelque.blogspot.com

I actually just redesigned my blog over the weekend. I use wordpress, and I pretty much modified the default theme that came with it. If anyone needs any help with their layout, I’m always willing to help on my free time. =)

I went to Wordpress but came back to Blogger.
I like the fact that Blogger give you google sized image hosting (have to buy a premium membership for that in WP unless you have your own hosting which you’ll still have to pay for). I also like the ease in which Blogger can be plugged into your own URL (and then, if you change your mind, reversed again). I guess, in the end, I feel like I have more control when using Blogger.
Blogger templates are much easier than working with half a dozen php files (what a recipe for a total nightmare if you don’t know what you’re doing!). I really like the ease in which Blogger can be modified and think it’s pretty cheeky for WP to charge a free/simple user a fee to be able to modify their css or html.
So, Blogger have my vote. No doubt others with disagree with gusto but for me it’s definitely best.
Also, Blogger templates seriously don’t have to be boring –

I had such a hard time finding good templates for Blogger. However, I love many of the features included with the new Blogger Beta so I went ahead and just converted popular wordpress themes myself along with creating some of my own. I get completely turned off when I visit a blog with an ugly or hard to navigate template! If you use blogger, I’d recommend you get a template that is appealing to the eye, search engine optimized (to a certain extent), and has space for ads and subscribing to an rss feed.

I would love to get new templates other than the annoying blogger basic ones but I’m afraid they are not that reliable.
Would i face a lot of problems using them? Are they harder to manage? What would happen to the layout setting page and all that, would blogger adjust its self to the new template that i uploaded?
What is killing me is that the basic blogger template that I”m using is too @#$% tight! It makes it hard to read long posts. Is there a way to make the template any wider? through the HTML or something?

I use Drivel because it is open source, and then blogspot.com’s default layouts. I believe you can edit the layouts, and I have done a bit of hardcore html editing.
My blog is not a big money maker, just a labour of love really.

I found http://www.pyzam.com/bloggerlayouts
They have around 2000 templates and I have not a single issue with any of them. I found a template that fits me perfectly. I also downloaded several for later use. By far it is my favorite and most plentiful website for layouts to use on blogspot/blogger.

I have a number of Blogger template designs that you can get freely at my blog. Main features of the templates are that the designs are simple, flexible, and can be completely customized to your style from the Settings panel, without tweaking the CSS.
Check them out and see what you think. Maybe you can add some comments on how to improve it.

At blogger.com you get a variety of choices, if you click on mine than you can see that I have a pretty good design considering that I never had to pay a penny. If you join blogger than you get to choose your own design from a list of 45 previewable templates.

When I signed up for my first blogger blog I could play with the template plenty. Now it’s inflexible and useless. Even template generators aren’t working. It’s almost impossible to get images into the template.

The Gecko and Fly sites indicate that they’ve ceased Blogger template development because of Blogger’s switch to XML. Can anyone comment on the likelihood of these classic templates becoming obsolete due to such changes? I’d like a nicer template, but don’t want to run the risk of crashing my blog.

I often wonder about if Blogger will cease the support of “classic” templates but I don’t think they will.
Reason: because those who have (external) hosting have to use “classic” mode and not new blogger and then “publish” the blog to their hosting. Of course this is different than just having a URL that is set to show your blogspot address (those people can use “new” blogger).

Personally I’ve always just used the basic “Minima” template and then modified it to fit the content.
I can’t decide if it’s better to modify the content to fit the design, or modify the design to fit the content…

Uploading a different template after you have setup many widgets in a Blogger template can cause some of your widgets to lose. In such a situation, manually converting the existing template to 3 columns is the best option.
If anyone wants to understand the under the hood details of 3 column Blogger templates, I recommend the article series Blogger Three Column Templates Explained. This will give you the confidence to convert your template in to three columns on your own.

I find it really difficult to find a really good theme for wordpress. First off, as someone who has virtually no experience with wordpress I find it really difficult to judge if a certain theme is safe. Yes of course there’s themes from the source http://themes.wordpress.net/, which can’t get any safer, but they’re boring. I don’t have the experience and knowledge to check a theme’s code for unwanted codes and referrals. Secondly, there aren’t a lot of themes that have a modern feel. I really like for instance the gridlock theme, but then again, I have no idea if it’s safe or not. A lot of themes are either cool and masculine-looking or feminine and very suburban. Apparently, there’s no middle ground. I’m getting frustrated! I need a 3 column, widget and adsense ready, feminine yet cool and modern, safe and free theme for a fashionblog.

My site http://www.wecue.net is a contributors blog. I found it difficult to find a blog theme which worked well with multiple bloggers. The one I found is called WPFreemium by Ptah Dunbar. I had to add a few things like a widget for authors, but overall I’ve really liked this theme.

Great post again, I am slowly going through new and old articles on your site.
I have utilised free templates for my wordpress sites also, ranging from full on CMS Wordpress templates to generic easy to use publisher templates.
My site; http://www.savingsguide.com.au – Offers financial services tips and uses a generic ‘ProSense’ blog template that easily allows adsense to be incorporated.
My personal site; http://www.ajwilson.com.au – this uses a free template I also found, its very bland looking but could be highly spruced up very quickly.

I tend to find the best ones just by googling the type of template I’m looking for – i.e colourful ones, and the results will show things like ‘the 25 best colourful templates’

I think the idea of templates is to give you the start point of your design, take any free template and make the changes you want, don’t use any template as it is.

I made a living using Free blogger custom templates, I never could figure out wordpress but I heard so many good things about WP, I tried to set up a Wordpress theme up got pissed off and went back to blogger, But http://www.wordpress-installer.com/ set my theme up for free, and I still have my blogger sites but they can’t touch the plugins and ability to monetize a size like what you get with Wp, I will allways keep my blogger sites they make me good money, but if your not using wordpress your missing out, trust me.

it took me long time to decide and to browse all templates that i have downloaded all this days.and now it’s done.
I want to say that the best way to shoose personal template is: choose some that you like very much and put them in folder, then preview them 1 by 1 on your site( be carefull , dont hit the save button), and reassemble the templates you think it go more with the “character” of your blog. Then bring someone else like friend, husband, wife…etc anyone (He/she don’t have to know alot about blogging) and let them see the preview of the templates you have chosen. Don’t influence them if you want good help. let them say what they think, and the most important if they see the detail you want them to see like visitors… Many times i was surprised by my husband (my adviser, and not blogger at all, but visitors of a lot of blogs) that he just can’t see titles, or he can’t find where are the labels, or some widgets make him nervous. This make me think about changing a lot of things in templates to symplify them. after all this blogs are mine but not fo me!

I tried to get the Tic Tac 3 column blog template from Gecko and Fly but it didn’t work. Does anyone know of another site where I can get a 3 column Tic Tac template? I really like that design.
