Sorry I am joining the discussion this late but #4 Relationality should be expanded to include "internationality". It's a lot easier to connect globally via blogs, forums, skype, etc. Just look at the popularity of Korea's OhMyNews in the U.S. blogosphere. And technorati can't get enough of Chinese blogs.
I assume that for bloggers in non-democratic regimes, social (or new) media allows them to reach out to an international community.

Who remembers the days before the internet? Back then, if you wanted to express your opinion, you had to write a letter to the editor of a newspaper, or call-in to a radio show. Those methods were not nearly as interactive as blogs.

I think your 8 reasons r truly correct. Mantra of New media is that "sky is the limit". I think they will definitely reachful the sky. Media is playing very important part in our lives. Good identification of the reasons.

[...] The confirmation that Relationship 2.0 is underway is confirmed via Easton Ellsworth who wrote a piece titled “Best Article On New Media You’ll Read All Week” that links to Darren Rowse’s “8 Reasons Why New Media is Growing.” Of Darrens’ eight, my favorite is number four ‘Relationality’ (go figure) where he mentions a thirst to connect with one another. “While there is still a big focus upon looking out for your own best interests (selfishness frustrates me and I see it everywhere) there are plenty of indications around that people are thirsting to connect with one another. Of course the way we connect and have relationships is changing with the rise in different technologies that allow cheap and easy connections across vast distances - but the desire to belong to communities of like minded people remains (and is perhaps growing). As I’ve said above - new media is at its best when it involves conversations, collective learning and being a part of things that are bigger than just yourself.” [...]

Great post Darren.

I think with the fragmentation that is occurring in how and where (blogs) we receive information, we are, whether we know it or not, getting used to absorbing information in an decentralized and un-censored manner. My hope for the future is for media Barons to lose the tight grip they possess to sway public opinion and that "true" information flow without any political attachments.

Sorry... I'm still hung up on the $15,000 refridgerator part. What does such a fridge do for you?

I think I want one... but I don't know why.

my #9 Flexibility.

Market testing is immediate and many different messages/dialogs can target different audiences within the same website, podcast, blog, etc....
I also suspect that the quick nature of the communication is better suited to small companies rather than a bureaucratic larger firm who have several levels of managers making decisions about company public image or who may have to be careful about what shareholders might see/hear.
