Thanks for this Darren. I've just announce a series about How To Build a Blogger Blog, and these tips will help me out. The series I did last year I feel lacked a bit in some areas that I hope to improve this year. One thing I did however that helped a lot was to create a table of contents page that listed each topic in advance. Right or wrong, it helped me stay focused and on track because quite honestly, I'm a busy person and will lose track with my lists.

Got to love the lists...lol

Cheers!

Wow all this stuff about series has really helped me write a better series for my blog.
I am currently writing my first ever series on mastering your debt in 30 days. I am hoping that it will build up readers and then afterwards I might turn it into a product to sell.

Michael: I use WordPress.com, so unfortunately I cannot use the plugin.

What I am doing for my first series instead is creating a page and having that contain all the links. Each post has text at the beginning stating that it is in the series and a link to the introductory post. That in turn has a link to the index of posts.

This system is of course very experimental right now, but it might work out. I'll probably make a lot of changes over time.

By the way, I publish mainly from Microsoft Word 2007 (which is also where I edit my posts) and then use a Firefox plugin to add the social bookmarking buttons and add the tags and categories (Word supports categories but not tags). Since I have the Firefox spell-checker installed, my posts get checked by Word and by Firefox, so that's another nice feature.

Of course, this blog is pretty new. I made an attempt earlier at blogger.com, but that failed, also I didn't like the interface, but WordPress.com seems better when you ignore the restrictions it places on you.

[...] Write a Series I like to write series on occasion, and in fact this post may have been better as a two part series don’t you think? Well if you are going to write a series you need to think about it before you do it. Once you’re all done writing your posts be sure to go back through and have them all link to each other (you can see what I did on the XFBA Series). Another tip that Darren from Problogger points to is the need to have a central page for the series (I’ve done this by creating a Featured page). Another fun thing to do is find collaborators to write with you on a topic, even finding people with different views than yourself is a great idea to help broaden your series’ appeal and readership.
I'd tend to disagree with your point 8 "Write a post a day". My rhythm is pretty poor, and having announced the series, I'd probably get distracted or busy with work and not have time to write each day. I'd probably side with Eric on using the scheduling feature to handle that.

Wow, Darren. We definitely take different paths in writing a series. Although I write a series based on a fairly broad topic (<a href="http://www.fyreplace.com/series#ams" rel="nofollow">Advanced Monetization Techniques</a>, for example), I take a set of sub-topic (see that series link for examples) and tend to treat each as a single post, with a definitive beginning and end. I rarely re-coup everything in the final post. Then again, I normally try to write with more a conversational style (I hope), as opposed to an instructional one.

Out of curiosity, if you find time (or interest), could you consider doing a post on writing a series using a real-world example (the Blogging for Beginners series, just as example), and take us through beginning to end? As far as your four or five steps are concerned, at least? I find myself curious.

Sometimes, I think, if it weren't for the series I've written, I wouldn't have half the blog I do. At the same time, I worry what will happen when I stop having rapid-fire ideas for series. The ideas for my current series, and the next two planned series, all came within one day of each other. Then again, I'm hoping my readers will become more active on the blog, and ideas will come from the conversations.
