State of the Blogosphere - February 2006
David Sifry has posted the first part in his latest State of the Blogosphere series of posts. This first one as normal picks up the topic of ‘Blogosphere Growth’. The summary statements:
- Technorati now tracks over 27.2 Million blogs
- The blogosphere is doubling in size every 5 and a half months
- It is now over 60 times bigger than it was 3 years ago
- On average, a new weblog is created every second of every day
- 13.7 million bloggers are still posting 3 months after their blogs are created
- Spings (Spam Pings) can sometimes account for as much as 60% of the total daily pings Technorati receives
- Sophisticated spam management tools eliminate the spings and find that about 9% of new blogs are spam or machine generated
- Technorati tracks about 1.2 Million new blog posts each day, about 50,000 per hour
- Over 81 Million posts with tags since January 2005, increasing by 400,000 per day
- Blog Finder has over 850,000 blogs, and over 2,500 popular categories have attracted a critical mass of topical bloggers

Is anyone else feeling saturated with the volume of blogs out there? I feel it’s certainly getting harder for the few good ideas to be seen. And I’m not just talking about commercialism of blogs. It’s the pure volume that creates the noise. And the signal to noise ratio seems to be getting smaller.

I’m sure I must have mentioned this before, but the number of new blogs created is a very poor way to judge the size of the blogosphere. Number of blog posts per day gives a much better idea I think.
Technorati tracks 27.2 million blogs, yet there are only 1.2 million posts per day? If everyone was posting at the same rate there would only be 1 new post every 22 days on each blog.
Since that clearly isn’t the case I suggest that a large number of those 27.2 million blogs are in fact inactive.

Great. Competition. More crappy blogs which will make the good blogs less visible.
