Great tip. I am testing this out for myself with my series of small travel niches. Instead of tackling "travel blogging" as a whole. I'm going to be writing a lot of small articles about the few lesser known places I have actually been to, and trying to get in on those scenes. Will keep you updated as to whether this works or not. To be continued...

I don't think the sub-niche will always work though. If you opened a donut shop in Beechworth that made better donuts than Beechworth Bakery would you succeed?

You'll still be competing against the better known niche sites. You may pick up some of their crumbs but you aren't getting the whole cake.

That being said, sure there's potential there as with anything and I'm always optimistic, I just like to look at the pros and cons as well.

I realize that there is a lot of elbow room still, but "More people not seeing these golden opportunities" means More Money for the rest of us!

That being said, I recommend to most of my coaching clients that they 'niche-ify' their businesses and have noticed this trend gaining momentum in the past 6-8 months.

The sub-niche (I call them micro-niches) concept is definitely one that is overlooked I think, especially when it is high profile because people feel they might not be able to compete. There could be 1000's of top digital camera sites to compete with that discuss many different kinds of cameras. Whoopee. But, you could devote an entire blog to a single camera and do very well in building a tight little niche that focuses people more closely on the product instead of a 'range' of them.

My point? It's just too bad more people don't see these golden opportunities.

Ok, enough babbling for one day :)

I'm following that sub-niche idea, but with a different approach. An HDTV blog for women. Big topic, but one in which marketing towards women has been generally neglected.

btw Darren, did you go to the Beechworth Bakery :-) I've spent a few hundred dolars over the years on coffee and other sugary assortments at BB - it's still the talk of the town, I see - good to see Tom going the franchise route.

sub-Niche, Yeah ... I guess I should have thought more before I started blogging in my own niche: home business :-( ... what was I thinking!
